Self-sealing container for protecting air sensitive samples

A self-sealing container, used for transferring one or more air sensitive samples between vacuum systems, includes a housing with a cavity that holds the sample(s), and a lid disposed on top of the housing. The lid is configured to interface with the housing to form a seal over the cavity when the lid is closed. At least two flexure systems, each coupled to the housing and the lid, are disposed on opposing sides of the housing. The flexure systems apply forces to the lid that move the lid horizontally and vertically above the housing, into an open position. A pneumatic actuator, movably coupled to the housing and the lid, that is actuated by a change in ambient pressure. When actuated, it applies forces that move the lid horizontally and vertically to the closed position, in opposition to and in excess of the forces applied by the flexure systems.

FTS3: Data Movement Service in containers deployed in OKD

The File Transfer Service (FTS3) is a data movement service developed at CERN which is used to distribute the majority of the Large Hadron Collider's data across the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) infrastructure. At Fermilab, we have deployed FTS3 instances for Intensity Frontier experiments (e.g. DUNE) to transfer data in America and Europe, using a container-based strategy. In this article we summarize our experience building docker images based on work from the SLATE project (slateci.io) and deployed in OKD, the community distribution of Red Hat OpenShift. Additionally, we discuss our method of certificate management and maintenance utilizing Kubernetes CronJobs. Finally, we also report on the two different configurations currently running at Fermilab, comparing and contrasting a Docker-based OKD deployment against a traditional RPM-based deployment.

Interlayer Triplet Energy Transfer in Dion-Jacobson 2D Perovskites Containing Naphthalene Diammonium Cations

The ability to tune the heterojunction energy level alignment in layered 2D perovskites is well documented, with both early works and more recent studies reporting interfacial triplet energy transfer in certain pairings of lead halide with small conjugated organic spacer cations. Such 2D perovskites are promising systems for sensitized molecular phosphorescence, which has varied applications in optoelectronics, solar energy conversion, and more. However, even for a given organic cation core, variations in the cation structure (e.g. location of the ammonium substituent, length of the alkyl linker, and valency of the cation) can dramatically alter the organic layer morphology and electronic coupling between the inorganic and organic layers. While interlayer triplet energy transfer has been studied in Ruddlesden-Popper 2D perovskites containing monovalent naphthalene cations, the photophysical properties of their Dion-Jacobson analogue, formed using divalent naphthalene cations, have not been reported. In this study, we examine interlayer energy transfer in a series of mixed-halide 2D perovskites formed by divalent naphthalene cations. We find that the sensitized phosphorescence in these compounds is dominated by naphthalene triplet excimer emission, but when the lead halide exciton level is tuned near resonance with the triplet level of naphthalene, emission from the naphthalene triplet monomer competes with triplet excimer formation. Interlayer energy transfer in these compounds is further supported by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Ultimately, the ability to gain control over interlayer interactions in layered 2D perovskites through cation design will help uncover new functions and applications for these materials.

Block graft copolymer binders and their use in silicon-containing anodes of lithium-ion batteries

The invention is also directed to lithium-ion batteries in which the above-described composition is incorporated in an anode of the battery.

Fragmentation of jets containing a prompt J$/\psi$ meson in PbPb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV

Jets containing a prompt J$/\psi$ meson are studied in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using the CMS detector at the LHC. Jets are selected to be in the transverse momentum range of 30 $\lt p_\mathrm{T} \lt$ 40 GeV. The J$/\psi$ yield in these jets is evaluated as a function of the jet fragmentation variable $z$, the ratio of the J$/\psi$$p_\mathrm{T} $ to the jet $p_\mathrm{T}$. The nuclear modification factor, $R_\mathrm{AA}$, is then derived by comparing the yield in lead-lead collisions to the corresponding expectation based on proton-proton data, at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. The suppression of the J$/\psi$ yield shows a dependence on $z$, indicating that the interaction of the J$/\psi$ with the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy ion collisions depends on the fragmentation that gives rise to the J$/\psi$ meson.

Electrolytes containing superhalogens for metal ion batteries

Compounds (salts) for use as electrolytes, e.g. in batteries such as Li ion, Na ion and Mg ion batteries are provided. The negative ions (anions) of the compounds are complex molecules containing superhalogens, and thus exhibit improved safety, and yet have electron affinities that are equal to or greater than those of halogens. In addition, the binding energy between Li+ and the anions is relatively small so ions can move easily from one electrode to the other in solutions in which the compounds are dissolved. A further advantage is that the affinity of the electrolyte for water is also relatively low so that batteries in which the electrolytes are used have longer lives than those of the prior art.

Method for forming sulfur-containing electrode using salt additive

The present disclosure relates to sulfur-containing electrodes and methods for forming the same. For example, the method may include disposing an electroactive material on or near a current collector to form an electroactive material layer having a first porosity and applying pressure and heat to the electroactive material layer so that the electroactive material layer has a second porosity. The first porosity is greater than the second porosity. The electroactive material may include a plurality of electroactive material particles and one or more salt additives. The method may further include contacting the electroactive material layer and an electrolyte such that the electrolyte dissolves the plurality of one or more salt particles so that the electroactive material layer has a third porosity. Mitigation of Leakage and Water Ingress for a Promising Phase Change Material (PCM) Containing Polythylene Glycol (PEG): Preprint

A promising and cost-effective phase change material (PCM) containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) 600, 800, and/or 1000 has been synthesized. It is shape stabilized using a sol-gel method and displays promising thermal properties. These properties make the PCMs good candidates for thermal batteries and other thermal energy storage applications in the building sector. However, PEG leakage is observed at elevated temperatures, and due to the hygroscopic nature of PEG, moisture ingress is also observed, which can have a significant effect on performance and durability. Thus, we have developed hydrophobic coatings to prevent PEG leakage and mitigate moisture ingress. The selected approach involves a secondary sol-gel process during which a thin layer formulated with hydrophobic precursors is deposited onto the surface of the PCM samples. Several coating formulations have been investigated, including formulations composed of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), diethoxy(dimethyl)silane (DEDMS), triethoxymethylsilane (TEMS), and n- octyltriethoxysilane (OTES). We find that this is effective at increasing hydrophobicity of the PCM substrates. It also decreases substrate leakage.
