Micro Rain Radar Pro Data at the Argonne Testbed for Multiscale Observational Science obtained during the CROCUS Urban Integrated Field Laboratory

The Micro Rain Radar Pro (MRR-PRO) is a vertically pointing Ka-band Doppler radar designed to capture the fine-scale structure and evolution of precipitation. By recording the full Doppler spectrum at high temporal and spatial resolution, the MRR-PRO provides insight into both hydrometeor fall velocities and precipitation microphysics. From these spectra, key moments—reflectivity, mean Doppler velocity, spectral width, and rainfall rate—are derived and stored alongside the raw spectral data in CF/Radial 1.4-compliant files. Deployed at the Argonne Testbed for Multiscale Observational Studies (ATMOS) since November 2024, the MRR-PRO delivers vertical profiles at 70 m range resolution extending up to 4.5 km above ground level. These observations enable detailed analyses of precipitation type, intensity, and vertical structure, supporting process-level studies of cloud and precipitation dynamics in diverse weather regimes.

Medium-duty Urban Range Extended Connected Powertrain (Final Scientific Technical Report)

The project goal is to develop and demonstrate a Class 4 delivery vehicle that reduces fuel consumption by 50% or more when compared to an equivalent vehicle with a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrain driven on a comparable duty cycle. This shall be achieved using a plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) configuration that optimizes the efficiency of the ICE. The proposed solution aims to be commercially viable for fleets to procure the system without additional incentives. To accomplish this, commercialized light-duty vehicle electric drive components shall be used. A PHEV configuration for Class 4 MD/HD vocational vehicles using commercialized light-duty vehicle electric drive components will require the development of a new topology for the hybrid powertrain applicable to medium-duty vehicles. Prior research indicates that an identified novel power split device could provide a fuel economy improvement potential of up to 51%. Utilizing an advanced battery management algorithm that will allow operation closer to the battery limits, the project will minimize battery capacity to achieve the desired performance results while maintaining the cost target for high commercialization. The solution must be cost effective to purchase and integrate into a Class 4 delivery vehicle, deliver the intended fuel economy improvement, and perform as well, or better, than the current conventional ICE powertrain. MD/HD vehicles typically require higher power, which is one factor that results in high costs for the powerful electric machines typical in larger HEV/PHEV systems. A key element in the project is the use of commercially available Bosch electric drive components (e.g., motors, batteries, and power electronics) from the larger passenger vehicle segment. This leverages the economies of scale to decrease cost and improve reliability beyond current purpose-built low-volume commercial vehicle components. These innovations will result in a game-changing PHEV system that meets DOE’s 50% fuel consumption reduction target, grants the vehicle an uncompromised driving range, and achieves the cost point for widespread adoption.

Understanding Building Energy Use in Small Urban Northern New York Areas: Basic Building Stock Characterization

This report is part of a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters." Each report provides commercial and multifamily building characteristic and energy data for a local geography, with the intention of helping policymakers at the city, county and state levels better understand building energy use. Specifically, this report breaks down the building stock in the counties shown in Figure 1 by building type, size, energy consumption, and emissions.

Detection of Isotopes in Urban Source Search Gamma Spectra Using Hopfield Neural Network

Source search campaigns involve the measurement of consecutive background gamma-ray spectra obtained with a mobile detector-spectrometer, such as tellurium-doped sodium iodide NaI(Tl) scintillator detector-spectrometer. Counts are measured with NaI(Tl) detector in short acquisition intervals, such as one second. Detection of isotopes in search data is challenging because of the low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the spectral lines and highly varying background due to naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM). In this work, we investigate the performance of the detection of orphan Cs-137, Am-241, and I-131 isotopes in a gamma ray data set obtained in a search survey. Isotopic detection is performed with a Hopfield Neural Network (HNN), which implements an auto-associative memory by matching incoming measurements to the closest one of its memory-stored signature patterns. HNN is trained on examples of spectra of calibrated isotopic sources with well-resolved spectral lines. During testing, HNN processes spectra with partially complete or distorted isotopic lines. The performance of the HNN detection algorithm is benchmarked with Precision, Recall, and F1 scores. Test results demonstrate the potential of HNN to detect the isotope of interest with high accuracy (F1 > 90%) for all isotopes in this study.

Building Monitoring and Energy Efficiency Training for Small and Mid-Sized Commercial Buildings in Non-Urbanized Areas of Alaska

The goal of this project was to create an effective training that increases understanding, competency and capacity in monitoring critical building data. Mentorship, verification and follow-up ensured participants now have necessary skills to install and maintain building monitoring systems. This training sought to empower building managers and maintenance staff to properly and efficiently operate their buildings for energy savings and increased lifespan of equipment. Through the project, participants’ knowledge of the building was increased through hands-on training using a familiar building environment and eliminating common barriers to effective training through peer-to peer delivery. In successful cases the host organization will save money and resources due to more efficient operation of building equipment already in place.
