Balancing Flexible Side Chains on 2D Conjugated Acceptors Enables High‐Performance Organic Solar Cell

Abstract Balancing the rigid backbones and flexible side chains of light‐harvesting materials is crucially important to reach optimized intermolecular packing, micromorphology, and thus photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, based on a distinctive CH‐series acceptor platform with 2D conjugation extended backbones, a series of nonfullerene acceptors (CH‐6F‐Cn) are synthesized by delicately tuning the lengths of flexible side chains fromn‐octyl ton‐amyl. A systemic investigation has revealed that the variation of the side chain's length can not only modulate intermolecular packing modes and crystallinity but also dramatically improve the micromorphology of the active layer and eventual photovoltaic parameters of OSCs. Consequently, the highest PCE of 18.73% can be achieved by OSCs employingD18:PM6:CH‐6F‐C8as light‐harvesting materials.

COMET: A Domain-Specific Compilation of High-Performance Computational Chemistry

The computational power increases over the past decades have greatly enhanced the ability to simulate chemical reactions and understand ever more complex transformations. Tensor contractions are the fundamental computational building block of these simulations. These simulations have often been tied to one platform and restricted in generality by the interface provided to the user. The expanding prevalence of accelerators and researcher demands necessitate a more general approach which is not tied to specific hardware or requires contortion of algorithms to specific hardware platforms. In this paper we present COMET, a domain-specific programming language and compiler infrastructure for tensor contractions targeting heterogeneous accelerators. We present a system of progressive lowering through multiple layers of abstraction and optimization that achieves up to 1.98×speedup for 30 tensor contractions commonly used in computational chemistry and beyond.

High-performance n-Type Polymers Based on Multiple Electron-withdrawing Groups Decorated ( E )-1,2-Di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene Building Blocks

The performance of n-type conjugated polymers lags far behind that of p-type polymers, which significantly restricts the development of organic electronics. The (E)-1,2-di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene (TVT) unit, owing to its unique advantages, has been widely applied in the design of p-type polymer semiconductors. Previous studies have demonstrated that introducing electron-withdrawing groups can lower the frontier orbital energy levels of polymers and enhance electron injection/transporting capabilities. Based on this, we proposed incorporating multiple electronwithdrawing groups, such as amide groups, fluorine atoms, and cyano groups, into the polymer backbones of TVT-based polymer to facilitate the electron transport. Here, we successfully designed and synthesized the polymers TVTDA-4FTVT and TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. Both polymers exhibited low frontier orbital energy levels. Due to its significantly higher crystallization tendency and favorable intermolecular packing structure, the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) device based on TVTDA-4FTVT demonstrated an electron mobility one order of magnitude higher than that of TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. TVTDA-4FTVT showed the highest electron mobility of 0.87 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 , while TVTDA-2F2CNTVT exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.049 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 . Owing to its deeper lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, the OFET devices based on TVTDA-2F2CNTVT showed good air stability after being placed in a natural environment for 15 d.

A high-performance and durable direct NH 3 tubular protonic ceramic fuel cell integrated with an internal catalyst layer

Nickel-based cermet anode-supported protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) show great potential for direct utilization of ammonia. However, the insufficient activity of anode and the deterioration of anode activity/durability caused by the undesired interaction between nickel and ammonia greatly limit the application. Here, we report tubular PCFCs embedded with a catalytic iron layer. Such cells show peak power densities of 1.507 W cm -2 and 1.078 W cm -2 at 700 °C when using H 2 and NH 3 as fuel, respectively, which are the highest tubular PCFC performance so far ever reported. In addition, the stability of cells with the catalyst layer has been dramatically enhanced when compared with that of cells without the catalyst layer. As a result, the enhancement of activity and durability is attributed to the catalytic activity of iron for ammonia decomposition, through which the direct contact between nickel and ammonia has been minimized and the anode structure has therefore been protected.

Interfacial engineering via laser ablation for high-performing PEM water electrolysis

A rationalized interfacial design strategy was applied to tailor the porous transport layer (PTL)-catalyst layer (CL) contact and the PTL bulk-phase architecture. Particularly, at the PTL-CL interface, our results reveal that laser ablated sintered titanium power-based PTLs improve electrolyzer performance at both the H2NEW Consortium baseline catalyst loading of 0.4 mgIr cm -2 as well as at the ultra-low catalyst loading of 0.055 mgIr cm -2 . Under ultra-low catalyst loadings, the laser ablated PTL demonstrates maximum reduction of 230 mV compared to the commercial PTL at 4 A cm -2 , and reduces by 68 mV at 3.2 A cm -2 under H2NEW baseline loading. Laser ablation alters the titanium phase at the interface, so it forms more uniform structure like a microporous layer or a backing layer, leading to an increase in the surface area in contact with the catalyst layer while preventing the membrane from deforming into the PTL. Moreover, we reveal that bulk-phase architecture modification of the PTL by ablating patterned pores at the flow field-PTL interface improves mass transport without sacrificing contact at the CL-PTL interface. Overall, laser ablation of the PTL is an effective method to customize interfacial design to enhance proton exchange membrane electrolyzer performance.

Surface-modified and oven-dried microfibrillated cellulose reinforced biocomposites: Cellulose network enabled high performance

Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is widely used as a reinforcement filler for biocomposites due to its unique properties. However, the challenge of drying MFC and the incompatibility between nanocellulose and polymer matrix still limits the mechanical performance of MFC-reinforced biocomposites. In this study, we used a water-based transesterification reaction to functionalize MFC and explored the capability of oven-dried MFC as a reinforcement filler for polylactic acid (PLA). Remarkably, this oven-dried, vinyl laurate–modified MFC improved the tensile strength by 38 % and Young’s modulus by 71 % compared with neat PLA. Our results suggested improved compatibility and dispersion of the fibrils in PLA after modification. This study demonstrated that scalable water-based surface modification and subsequent straightforward oven drying could be a facile method for effectively drying cellulose nanomaterials. We find that the method helps significantly disperse fibrils in polymers and enhances the mechanical properties of microfibrillar cellulose-reinforced biocomposites.

Room temperature slot-die coated perovskite layer modified with sulfonyl-γ-AApeptide for high performance perovskite solar devices

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibited remarkable progress for small aperture area cells, however, the performance of its counterpart, large aperture area cells, lags due to non-uniform and defective perovskite layers. Here, we fabricate reproducible large area homogeneous perovskite films at room temperature and without controlling humidity (up to 40 % RH) with a slot die coater on a c-TiO 2 layer deposited using a large area chemical bath. A new artificial peptide – sulfonyl-γ-AApeptide (F-GLU-S) was employed to modify the slot-die coated perovskite surface, grain boundaries and electronic defects. The multi-functional F-GLU-S with carbonyl, carboxyl, sulfonyl, benzene, and chloro groups was capable of strongly interacting with the perovskite layer and repairing the uncoordinated Pb 2+ ions and halide vacancies. As a result, both the electron and hole densities of defects were significantly suppressed; consequently, the non-radiative recombination was effectively suppressed for the modified device which can be explicitly seen in the device performance where both V oc and FF of the modified device improved considerably. Therefore, F-GLU-S modified slot-die coated MAPbI 3 – based devices demonstrated outstanding performance of 21.44 % PCE with a V oc of 1.13 V, J sc of 24.64 cm –2 , and FF 76.99 %. Furthermore, F-GLU-S passivation impeded the infiltration of moisture and oxygen due to its hydrophobic nature and defect repair potential. As a result, the modified device retained above 92 % of its original PCE after 720 h in air (room temperature and 40–60 % RH).

High-performance aqueous zinc-ion hybrid capacitors based on 3D printed metal-organic framework cathodes

The zinc-ion hybrid capacitor is a promising energy storage device, but current overall capacity is limited by the capacitance of the carbon cathode. We have produced a hierarchically porous, nitrogen-doped carbon cathode with good cycling and mechanical stability by 3D printing and pyrolysis of the zinc-based metal–organic framework ZIF-8. When incorporated into a zinc-ion hybrid capacitor, we achieved an areal capacitance of 16.9 F cm -2 and energy density of 7.23 mW h cm -2 , outperforming zinc-ion hybrid capacitors based on conventional cathodes.
