Resonance cones in cold plasma: Origin, singularities, and power flow

In magnetized tenuous plasma, typical at the plasma edge of fusion devices, a nearly electrostatic wave mode with relatively enhanced electric field can propagate along a specific angle with the magnetic field. For this characteristic, it is known as a “resonance cone.” For instance, these waves can be excited by radio frequency antennas in the ion-cyclotron and lower-hybrid range of frequencies. We consider the resonance cones emitted by idealized spatially extended sources. In 2D, we use a novel geometric construction which generalizes the d'Alembert solution to curved boundaries/moving sources, and show, for the first time, that singular electric fields arise under these conditions, thereby bringing the resonance cones in line with the other resonances of the cold plasma theory. Still in 2D, we give an expression for the amount of power radiated by resonance cones in terms of surface quantities on the source, which is finite despite the singular electric field. In conclusion, we generalize the conclusions regarding the presence and location of singular electric fields to the 3D electromagnetic case.

Ab initio coupled-cluster calculations of ground and dipole excited states in He 8

We perform coupled-cluster calculations of ground- and dipole excited-state properties of the 8 He halo nucleus with nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory, both with and without explicit delta degrees of freedom. By increasing the precision in our coupled-cluster calculations via the inclusion of leading-order three-particle three-hole excitations in the cluster operator, we obtain a ground-state energy and a charge radius that are consistent with experiment, albeit with a slight underbinding. We also investigate the excited states induced by the electric dipole operator and present a discussion on the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn and cluster sum rules. Lastly, we compute the electric dipole polarizability, providing a theoretical benchmark for future experimental determinations that will study this exotic nucleus.

Absorption of charged particles in perfectly matched layers by optimal damping of the deposited current

Perfectly matched layers (PMLs) are widely used in particle-in-cell simulations, in order to absorb electromagnetic waves that propagate out of the simulation domain. However, when charged particles cross the interface between the simulation domain and the PMLs, a number of numerical artifacts can arise. Here, in order to mitigate these artifacts, we introduce a PML algorithm whereby the current deposited by the macroparticles in the PML is damped by an analytically derived optimal coefficient. The benefits of this algorithm are illustrated in practical simulations. In particular, it is shown that this algorithm is well suited for particles exiting the box in near-normal incidence, in the sense that the fields behave as if the exiting particle is propagating in an infinite vacuum.

A 100-kW Wireless Power Transfer System Development Using Polyphase Electromagnetic Couplers

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an essential technology enabling automated charging of electric vehicles with safety, convenience, and flexibility while having high efficiencies. High-power wireless charging systems will be one of the dominating charging technologies for electric vehicles (EVs) in an effort to eliminate range anxiety and reduce charging times similar to that of gas station refueling practice. Polyphase electromagnetic coupler with rotating fields is a new bipolar wireless charging pad technology that can significantly increase the surface power density (kW/m2) of wireless charging coils. This study proposes a 100-kW wireless power transfer system with a compact vehicle-side (receiver) coupler that reaches to about 0.905 MW/m2 surface power density with a transmitter rated for up to 300 kW with 0.68 MW/m2. High-frequency power electronics including the inverter and rectifier designs are included in this digest along with the hardware prototype developments and preliminary experimental results.

High-Gradient Wien Spin Rotators at Jefferson Lab

Nuclear physics experiments performed in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) require spin manipulation of electron beams. Two Wien spin rotators in the injector keV region are essential at CEBAF to establish longitudinal polarization at the end station target, and to flip the polarization direction by ? rad to rule out false asymmetries. In a Wien filter, the homogeneous and independent electric and magnetic fields, along with the velocity vectors of the electrons that traverse it, form a mutually orthogonal system. The magnitude of the electrostatic field, established by biasing two highly-polished electrodes, defines the desired spin angle at the target yet deviates the beam trajectory due to the Lorentz force. The beam trajectory in the Wien is then re-established by adjusting the magnetic field, induced by an electromagnet encasing the device vacuum chamber. This contribution describes the evolution design and high voltage testing of Wien filters for spin manipulation at increased beam energies in the keV injector region, required by high precision parity violation experiments like MOLLER.

Image quality indicator and dechromator setup for static LANSCE proton radiography experiment

This document describes a static geometry consisting of a sphere of gold and Ti-6Al-4V alloy, along with an energy-loss matching dechromator composed of polycarbonate, to field with the X3 electromagnetic magnifying lens at LANSCE during the next beam cycle. This static configuration will allow us to: (1) characterize the system’s resolution at the material interface between the gold and titanium alloy, and test the image quality for fine features associated with the screws used to fasten the titanium alloy hemispheres; (2) tune our models of proton scattering and imaging for these materials; and (3) test a procedure to align the polycarbonate dechromator and the sphere within the proton beamline. The data will also be suitable for validation of the software options available for proton radiography simulations.

Protection of Distribution Circuits with High Penetration of Solar PV: Distance, Learning, and Estimation-Based Methods

The results of DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office project 34233 are presented. The newest version of IEEE Standard 1547 enables photovoltaic inverters to ride through voltage disturbances, improving bulk system reliability, at the expense of removing undervoltage trip as a fast method of de facto fault detection in high PV adoption scenarios. The project explored new methods of fault detection that don't rely on communication systems and could be available quickly, including distance-based schemes, focused directional relays, and two different data-driven schemes. The schemes were evaluated with fast-phasor simulation, electromagnetic transient simulation, and field data collection at partner utilities Chattanooga Electric Power Board and Dominion Energy Virginia. Accomplishments and possible paths forward are summarized.

Low power electromagnetic flowmeter providing accurate zero set

A low power, small size electromagnetic flowmeter system is described which produces a zero output signal for zero flow. The system comprises an air core type electromagnetic flow transducer, a field current supply circuit for the transducer coils and a pre-amplifier and demodulation circuit connected to the output of the transducer. To prevent spurious signals at zero flow, separate, isolated power supplies are provided for the two circuits. The demodulator includes a pair of synchronous rectifiers which are controlled by signals from the field current supply circuit. Pulse transformer connected in front of the synchronous rectifiers provide isolation between the two circuits.

A study of the compatibility of science instruments with the solar electric propulsion space vehicle

Electromagnetic interference and field-of-view constraints are identified as the areas of most concern to science on solar electric propulsion space vehicles. Several areas are indicated which more detailed data on the space vehicle environment are needed. In addition, possible means to attain or demonstrate science/space vehicle compatibility are recommended for further iteration between space vehicle design and science payload considerations. The space vehicle design developed by the solar electric propulsion system integration technology effort is used. Two payload sets for comet Encke missions (a slow flyby and a rendezvous), as well as several instruments which are not included in the two payload sets, are analyzed to determine requirements on the space vehicle imposed by the instruments in order to meet their objectives. Environmental requirements for the sets of instruments are developed and compared to both the SEPSIT design criteria and the environment as it is presently understood.

Preliminary design for a standard 10 sup 7 bit Solid State Memory (SSM)

A modular concept with three separate modules roughly separating bubble domain technology, control logic technology, and power supply technology was employed. These modules were respectively the standard memory module (SMM), the data control unit (DCU), and power supply module (PSM). The storage medium was provided by bubble domain chips organized into memory cells. These cells and the circuitry for parallel data access to the cells make up the SMM. The DCU provides a flexible serial data interface to the SMM. The PSM provides adequate power to enable one DCU and one SMM to operate simultaneously at the maximum data rate. The SSM was designed to handle asynchronous data rates from dc to 1.024 Mbs with a bit error rate less than 1 error in 10 to the eight power bits. Two versions of the SSM, a serial data memory and a dual parallel data memory were specified using the standard modules. The SSM specification includes requirements for radiation hardness, temperature and mechanical environments, dc magnetic field emission and susceptibility, electromagnetic compatibility, and reliability.

The applicability of MFD thrusters to satellite power systems

The high power self field MPD thruster uses electromagnetic forces rather than electrostatic to accelerate a neutral plasma. The most attractive application of MPD thrusters to satellite power systems is in the area of electric propulsion for a cargo orbit transfer vehicle (COTV). Calculations were performed in order to compare the performance of a COTV using an ion or MPD propulsion system. Results show that the MPD propulsion system gives a shorter trip time with the same power and payload when compared to the ion thruster propulsion system at either value of specific impulse. More important than the trip time benefit may be the advantage a MPD propulsion system provides in system simplicity. Another interesting COTV concept using MPD thrusters is the use of a remote power supply located on the Earth, at GEO, or somewhere in between to transmit power to the COTV in a microwave transmission. The specific impulse at thrust levels of tens of newtons makes a MPD propulsion system a candidate for stationkeeping and attitude control of large space structures such as a SPS.

A hydromagnetic vortex seen by ISEE-1 and 2

Magnetometer and plasma data from the dual ISEE spacecraft are combined in a study of the initial plasma vortex event reported by Hones et al. (1978) in the dawn plasma sheet. The event is a transient hydromagnetic wave of two cycles duration with a six minute period. Large amplitude compressional and transverse magnetic components were present. Particle and magnetic pressure oscillations were in strict antiphase, but did not balance. When combined with the plasma velocity data these properties show that substantial Earthward field-aligned flows of electromagnetic energy and heat flux occurred during the vortex. The net energy flow perpendicular to B was in the antisolar direction. This event possesses hydromagnetic features unique to a hot plasma environment.
