The sodium and hydrogen gas clouds of Io

Models are developed to describe the spatial distribution of gases emitted by Io and are applied to recent observations which indicate extensive gas clouds of hydrogen and sodium in orbit around Jupiter. Hydrogen and sodium atoms are emitted from Io with velocities in the range from 2 to 3 km/sec, with fluxes of about 10 billion and 100 million per sq cm/sec for hydrogen and sodium, respectively. Hydrogen atoms may be formed by photodecomposition of gases such as NH3 or H2S released from the satellite surface and may escape thermally from an exosphere whose temperature is about 500 K. Sodium may be ejected from the surface by energetic particles or by ultraviolet radiation, and it appears that a nonthermal mechanism drawing energy from Jupiter's magnetic field is required in order to account for its release to space.

Engineering approximations for Jovian entry

A code has been written to describe the behavior of an ablating heat shield throughout the entire maneuver into a planetary atmosphere. The code includes a trajectory computation for a variable mass, a computation of the heating history and distribution over the probe, ablation effects, indepth material response, and shape change. The code draws the initial and final shapes of the heat shield and computes its initial and final mass. Results are compared with those of other investigators, and solutions are obtained for a silica heat shield entering three model atmospheres of Jupiter. The effects of varying half cone angle and entry angle are examined as well as shape change effects. The so-called 'cusping effect' in the stagnation region is examined.

Design for a three-fingered hand

This paper describes the construction of a prototype mechanical hand or 'end effector' for use on a remotely controlled robot, but with possible application as a prosthetic device. An analysis of hand motions is reported, from which it is concluded that the two most important manipulations (apart from grasps) are to be able to pick up a tool and draw it into a nested grip against the palm, and to be able to hold a pistol-grip tool such as an electric drill and pull the trigger. One of our models was tested and found capable of both these operations.

Electric currents in cosmic plasmas

It is suggested that dualism is essential for the physics of cosmic plasmas, that is, that some phenomena should be described by a magnetic field formalism, and others by an electric current formalism. While in earlier work the magnetic field aspect has dominated, at present there is a systematic exploration of the particle (or current) aspect. A number of phenomena which can be understood only from the particle aspect are surveyed. Topics include the formation of electric double layers, the origin of 'explosive' events like magnetic substorms and solar flares, and the transfer of energy from one region to another. A method for exploring many of these phenomena is to draw the electric circuit in which the current flows and then study its properties. A number of simple circuits are analyzed in this way.

A study of density fronts and their effects on coastal pollutants

Density fronts represent regions of extremely high gradient or discontinuity in various parameters of physical interest, the most important being the water velocity and density fields. Such fronts strongly influence pollutant dispersion, by capturing oil slicks and other pollutants concentrated in surface films and drawing them down into the water column. Satellites, aircraft and boats were used to study the behavior of different types of fronts in Delaware Bay and their effect on pollutants in order to provide a basis for improving an oil drift and spreading model. Landsat satellites provided the most effective means of determining the location and extent of frontal systems over all portions of the tidal cycle. Satellite observations of flood-associated fronts on the New Jersey side of the Bay and ebb-associated fronts on the Delaware side agreed with boat measurements and model predictions.

Some measured and calculated effects of a tip vortex modification device on impulsive noise

The results of a recent wind tunnel test program to evaluate the effectiveness of the Tip Air Mass Injection (TAMI) system in modifying the blade tip vortex occurring during helicopter flight is described with attention to the effect of this modification on the impulsive noise. The measurement program is explained, and the correlation between experimental and predicted results is discussed. Topics considered include the effect of descent rate on noise pressure time histories, the effect of air mass injection on noise, and the analysis based on a dB(A) weighted approach. Impulsive noise generated by the interaction of a helicopter rotor blade and the concentrated tip vortex during forward flight descent is a primary contributor to acoustic annoyance as it draws early attention to the presence of the helicopter.

Splitter-bladed centrifugal compressor impeller designed for automotive gas turbine application

Mechanical design and fabrication of two splitter-bladed centrifugal compressor impellers were completed for rig testing at NASA Lewis Research Center. These impellers were designed for automotive gas turbine application. The mechanical design was based on NASA specifications for blade-shape and flowpath configurations. The contractor made engineering drawings and performed calculations for mass and center-of-gravity, for stress and vibration analyses, and for shaft critical speed analysis. One impeller was machined to print; the other had a blade height and exit radius of 2.54 mm larger than print dimensions.
