Double-diffusive effects during solidification

When a fluid contains two diffusing components with different molecular diffusivities, such as heat and solute concentration, convective motion may be generated when potential energy is released owing to differential diffusion. In the solidification of binary alloys and doped semiconductors, temperature and concentration gradients do exist simultaneously. If these gradients are aligned in a suitable manner, convection may ensue. In the case of the binary alloy, such convection may extend through the mushy zone and may be the cause of macrosegregations. In the case of doped semiconductors, the convective motion may cause the nonuniform distribution of dopant in the product. In this paper, the fundamentals of double-diffusive convection will be reviewed, and its effect on solidification will be discussed.

Effect of finite width on deflection and energy release rate of an orthotropic double cantilever specimen

The problem of an orthotropic cantilevered plate subjected to a uniformly distributed end load is solved by the Rayleigh-Ritz energy method. The result is applied to laminated composite, double cantilevered specimens to estimate the effect of crack tip constraint on the transverse curvature, deflection and energy release rate. The solution is also utilized to determined finite width correction factors for fracture energy characterization tests in which neither plane stress nor plane strain conditions apply.

The virtual cathode as a transient double sheath

The two-dimensional plasma potential measurements are given of a space-charge dominated double sheath near a hot cathode. Laboratory data show that a virtual cathode is a self-consistent solution only for a transient cathode-plasma system. Slow charge exchange ions get trapped in the potential dip that forms the virtual cathode and eventually destroy it.

Advanced double layer capacitors

There is a need for large amounts of power to be delivered rapidly in a number of airborne and space systems. Conventional, portable power sources, such as batteries, are not suited to delivering high peak power pulses. The charge stored at the electrode-electrolyte double layer is, however, much more assessible on a short time scale. Devices exploiting this concept were fabricated using carbon and metal oxides (Pinnacle Research) as the electrodes and sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. The approach reported, replaces the liquid sulfuric acid electrolyte with a solid ionomer electrolyte. The challenge is to form a solid electrode-solid ionomer electrolyte composite which has a high capacitance per geometric area. The approach to maximize contact between the electrode particles and the ionomer was to impregnate the electrode particles using a liquid ionomer solution and to bond the solvent-free structure to a solid ionomer membrane. Ruthenium dioxide is the electrode material used. Three strategies are being pursued to provide for a high area electrode-ionomer contact: mixing of the RuOx with a small volume of ionomer solution followed by filtration to remove the solvent, and impregnation of the ionomer into an already formed RuOx electrode. RuOx powder and electrodes were examined by non-electrochemical techniques. X-ray diffraction has shown that the material is almost pure RuO2. The electrode structure depends on the processing technique used to introduce the Nafion. Impregnated electrodes have Nafion concentrated near the surface. Electrodes prepared by the evaporation method show large aggregates of crystals surrounded by Nafion.

The design and analysis of a double swivel toggle release mechanism for the Orbiter stabilized payload deployment system

The NASA Stabilized Payload Deployment System (SPDS) is discussed. The lightweight and heavy-duty system rolls payloads over the orbiter's side rather than ejecting them upward. The system will enhance the orbiter capability of carrying larger and heavier payloads. The design, function, and analysis of a new three-pin double swivel toggle release mechanism which is crucial to the successful deployment of the SPDS are described.

Double lead spiral platen parallel jaw end effector

The double lead spiral platen parallel jaw end effector is an extremely powerful, compact, and highly controllable end effector that represents a significant improvement in gripping force and efficiency over the LaRC Puma (LP) end effector. The spiral end effector is very simple in its design and has relatively few parts. The jaw openings are highly predictable and linear, making it an ideal candidate for remote control. The finger speed is within acceptable working limits and can be modified to meet the user needs; for instance, greater finger speed could be obtained by increasing the pitch of the spiral. The force relaxation is comparable to the other tested units. Optimization of the end effector design would involve a compromise of force and speed for a given application.

Factors influencing elastic stresses in double cantilever beam specimens

An elastic stress analysis was conducted for a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen using finite-element methods. The purpose of this study was to identify the important parameters that influence stresses ahead of the delamination front. The study focused on an aluminum DCB specimen, typical of adhesively-bonded joints, and on a graphite/epoxy specimen representing a cocured composite. Opening mode sigma sub y stresses ahead of the crack tip were calculated and compared with those for a monolithic reference specimen. Beyond the singularity-dominated region very near the crack tip, the sigma sub y distribution was elevated compared to the monolithic case. Both the adhesive thickness and the adherend transverse (thickness-direction) stiffness were found to influence the elevation of sigma sub y. In contrast, adherend thickness and longitudinal stiffness has very little effect on this stress distribution. Estimates for adhesive yielding beyond the aluminum DCB crack tip showed that both the area and height of the plastic zone increased to a peak value for increasing adhesive thicknesses. Results from this study would provide insight for comparing data from different DCB specimens and for designing new DCB specimens.

Numerical simulation of the vortical flow over a round-edged double-delta wing

Simulations of three-dimensional vortical flows over a thin double-delta wing with an aspect ratio of 2.05 have been performed. Steady-state solutions to the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are obtained using a new implicit upwind-relaxation finite-difference scheme. The method is second-order accurate spatially and naturally dissipative. Numerical results indicate that key features of both vortical interaction and vortex breakdown are successfully simulated. The computed lift coefficients and lateral trajectories of the vortical cores are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Relativistic beaming and the nuclei of double-lobed radio quasars

A complete sample of double-lobed 3CR quasars with minimal orientation bias is defined. Properties of these objects on the greater than kpc scale are consistent with the simple beaming model for their nuclei. VLBI maps of six nuclei reveal 'core-jet' structures. Both nuclei mapped at multiple epochs are modestly superluminal. The distribution of apparent velocities in this sample will provide a stringent test of beaming.

Ion-beam focusing in a double-plasma device

The authors studied the propagation of a low-energy charge-neutralized ion beam injected into the target region of a long double-plasma device. A magnetic field of up to about 180 G may be applied along the axis of the device. As a result of charge exchange collisions, the ion beam is attenuated as it propagates into the target region. However, under certain conditions of magnetic field strength and neutral gas pressure, the authors have observed a `reemergence' of the beam on axis far downstream in the target. This reemergence of the ion beam is attributed to a focusing of the ions by a self-consistently produced radial ambipolar electric field. The effect may be expected to occur in other types of plasma devices as well, whenever a sufficiently large radially inward electric field is present.

Passive tilt compensation in an FTS using a double-sided flat retroflector

An optical configuration for a tilt-compensated Fourier transform spectrometer is presented. An expanded and collimated He-Ne laser beam was passed through the interferometer and the collimated output was observed visually. The double-sided mirror was tilted through angles approaching 1 deg with no apparent degradation in the interference quality.

Three-dimensional elastic analysis of a composite double cantilever beam specimen

Attention is given to the stresses and the strain energy release rate along the delamination front in the present three-dimensional elastic analysis of a 24-ply, cocured double-cantilever beam specimen by means of 20-noded parabolic-isoparametric finite elements. At the free surface, the strain energy release rate was found to be substantially smaller than the plane strain value; this is suggested to be due to the free-surface effect that exists where the delamination meets the surface edge.

Effects of initial delamination on CIc and GIth values from glass/epoxy double cantilever beam tests

The effect of insert thickness and method of precracking on mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, GIc, and delamination fatigue threshold, GIth, values were determined for a glass/epoxy double cantilever beam specimen. The results of the static tests showed that precracking in tension would cause fiber bridging and thus may yield unconservative values of GIc and GIth. Precracking in shear yields suitable values of GIc but overly conservative values of GIth. For the glass/epoxy composite used, an insert thickness of 0.5 mil was most suitable for determining GIc and GIth values, although an insert thickness up to 3 mil was acceptable. Inserts thicker than 3 mil were not acceptable for determining GIc and GIth values.

The effect of higher than double excitations on the F + H2 to FH + H barrier

The averaged coupled-pair functional (ACPF) method is used to calculate the barrier height and saddle-point geometry for the reaction F + H2 yields FH + H. The theoretical basis of the calculation method is outlined, and results for both 7-electron and 9-electron correlations are presented in tables and shown to be consistent with a barrier of 1.65 kcal/mol. The ACPF results are found to be in good agreement with the Davidson-corrected multireference CI computations of Bauschlicher et al. (1988) and with the results obtained by Scuseria and Schaefer (1988) using a CI method which accounts for all single, double, triple, and quadruple excitations.

Two-color double exposure photographic recording technique

A two-color double exposure technique is proposed for recording two close states of an object on the same photographic film. The idea is to use a two-color laser for illumination, one color for each state of the object, and a single photographic plate. After being developed, the image of each state may be observed separately. The technique is demonstrated for the deferred moire deflectometry where two closely displaced fringe patterns have to be recorded and resolved.

Double-peaked sodium layers at high latitudes

Na lidar observations indicate that at high latitudes in summer the neutral Na layer frequently attains a double-peaked structure. The main layer with a maximum near 90 km altitude is supplemented by a secondary, narrow layer near 95 km altitude. Results are presented concerning secondary sodium layers. It appears likely that the formation of secondary Na layers observed frequently above the lidar site is not solely a 'sodium phenomenon', but part of a more comprehensive layering process for metal atoms and ions. Na(+)/Na density ratios close to 0.5 near the peaks of both the main and secondary layers are derived.

Double galaxy redshifts and the statistics of small numbers

Tifft (1980, 1982) claimed that observations of double galaxies reveal a 72 km/s periodicity. Sharp showed that the 'periodicities' in the observations are completely consistent with the statistics of small numbers. Here it is shown that Tifft's statistical procedure would ascribe a periodicity to small sets of Gaussian random noise. Satisfying the null hypothesis that the observations are not samples drawn from a normal population would require the acquisition of at least an order of magnitude more data.

Calculation of the electron wave function in a graded-channel double-heterojunction modulation-doped field-effect transistor

Three double-heterojunction modulation-doped field-effect transistor structures with different channel composition are investigated theoretically. All of these transistors have an In(x)Ga(1-x)As channel sandwiched between two doped Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As barriers with undoped spacer layers. In one of the structures, x varies from 0 from either heterojunction to 0.15 at the center of the channel quadratically; in the other two, constant values of x of 0 and 0.15 are used. The Poisson and Schroedinger equations are solved self-consistently for the electron wave function in all three cases. The results showed that the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) concentration in the channel of the quadratically graded structure is higher than the x = 0 one and slightly lower than the x = 0.15 one, and the mean distance of the 2DEG is closer to the center of the channel for this transistor than the other two. These two effects have important implications on the electron mobility in the channel.
