SIERRA/Aero User Manual (V.5.0)

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

Extending PETSc's Composable Hierarchical Solvers (Final Technical Report)

This report documents research activities conducted at CU Boulder as part of Extending PETSc’s Composable Hierarchical Solvers, which has been part of a collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory (separate award). Our work has focused on performance-portable end-to-end GPU solvers demonstrated via exemplary applications in nonlinear fluid and structural mechanics. We describe advances in algorithmic composition and analysis in the context of these applications, but the implementations are fully documented and decoupled, and in use by other projects. We believe the vertical integration achieved through collaboration with ECP’s CEED and the PSAAP center at CU was necessary to take risks with data structures and algorithms.

User document for computer programs for ring-stiffened shells of revolution

A user manual and related program documentation is presented for six compatible computer programs for structural analysis of axisymmetric shell structures. The programs apply to a common structural model but analyze different modes of structural response. In particular, they are: (1) Linear static response under asymmetric loads; (2) Buckling of linear states under asymmetric loads; (3) Nonlinear static response under axisymmetric loads; (4) Buckling nonlinear states under axisymmetric (5) Imperfection sensitivity of buckling modes under axisymmetric loads; and (6) Vibrations about nonlinear states under axisymmetric loads. These programs treat branched shells of revolution with an arbitrary arrangement of a large number of open branches but with at most one closed branch.

Geometric error analysis for shuttle imaging spectrometer experiment

The demand of more powerful tools for remote sensing and management of earth resources steadily increased over the last decade. With the recent advancement of area array detectors, high resolution multichannel imaging spectrometers can be realistically constructed. The error analysis study for the Shuttle Imaging Spectrometer Experiment system is documented for the purpose of providing information for design, tradeoff, and performance prediction. Error sources including the Shuttle attitude determination and control system, instrument pointing and misalignment, disturbances, ephemeris, Earth rotation, etc., were investigated. Geometric error mapping functions were developed, characterized, and illustrated extensively with tables and charts. Selected ground patterns and the corresponding image distortions were generated for direct visual inspection of how the various error sources affect the appearance of the ground object images.

Engineering visualization utilizing advanced animation

Engineering visualization is the use of computer graphics to depict engineering analysis and simulation in visual form from project planning through documentation. Graphics displays let engineers see data represented dynamically which permits the quick evaluation of results. The current state of graphics hardware and software generally allows the creation of two types of 3D graphics. The use of animated video as an engineering visualization tool is presented. The engineering, animation, and videography aspects of animated video production are each discussed. Specific issues include the integration of staffing expertise, hardware, software, and the various production processes. A detailed explanation of the animation process reveals the capabilities of this unique engineering visualization method. Automation of animation and video production processes are covered and future directions are proposed.
