Digital-flight-control-system software written in automated-engineering-design language: A user's guide of verification and validation tools

The user guide of verification and validation (V&V) tools for the Automated Engineering Design (AED) language is specifically written to update the information found in several documents pertaining to the automated verification of flight software tools. The intent is to provide, in one document, all the information necessary to adequately prepare a run to use the AED V&V tools. No attempt is made to discuss the FORTRAN V&V tools since they were not updated and are not currently active. Additionally, the current descriptions of the AED V&V tools are contained and provides information to augment the NASA TM 84276. The AED V&V tools are accessed from the digital flight control systems verification laboratory (DFCSVL) via a PDP-11/60 digital computer. The AED V&V tool interface handlers on the PDP-11/60 generate a Univac run stream which is transmitted to the Univac via a Remote Job Entry (RJE) link. Job execution takes place on the Univac 1100 and the job output is transmitted back to the DFCSVL and stored as a PDP-11/60 printfile.

Mathematical models of continuous flow electrophoresis: Electrophoresis technology

Two aspects of continuous flow electrophoresis were studied: (1) the structure of the flow field in continuous flow devices; and (2) the electrokinetic properties of suspended particles relevant to electrophoretic separations. Mathematical models were developed to describe flow structure and stability, with particular emphasis on effects due to buoyancy. To describe the fractionation of an arbitrary particulate sample by continuous flow electrophoresis, a general mathematical model was constructed. In this model, chamber dimensions, field strength, buffer composition, and other design variables can be altered at will to study their effects on resolution and throughput. All these mathematical models were implemented on a digital computer and the codes are available for general use. Experimental and theoretical work with particulate samples probed how particle mobility is related to buffer composition. It was found that ions on the surface of small particles are mobile, contrary to the widely accepted view. This influences particle mobility and suspension conductivity. A novel technique was used to measure the mobility of particles in concentrated suspensions.

System analysis in rotorcraft design: The past decade

Rapid advances in the technology of electronic digital computers and the need for an integrated synthesis approach in developing future rotorcraft programs has led to increased emphasis on system analysis techniques in rotorcraft design. The task in systems analysis is to deal with complex, interdependent, and conflicting requirements in a structured manner so rational and objective decisions can be made. Whether the results are wisdom or rubbish depends upon the validity and sometimes more importantly, the consistency of the inputs, the correctness of the analysis, and a sensible choice of measures of effectiveness to draw conclusions. In rotorcraft design this means combining design requirements, technology assessment, sensitivity analysis and reviews techniques currently in use by NASA and Army organizations in developing research programs and vehicle specifications for rotorcraft. These procedures span simple graphical approaches to comprehensive analysis on large mainframe computers. Examples of recent applications to military and civil missions are highlighted.

Bragg-cell receiver study

Bragg-cell receivers are employed in specialized Electronic Warfare (EW) applications for the measurement of frequency. Bragg-cell receiver characteristics are fully characterized for simple RF emitter signals. This receiver is early in its development cycle when compared to the IFM receiver. Functional mathematical models are derived and presented in this report for the Bragg-cell receiver. Theoretical analysis is presented and digital computer signal processing results are presented for the Bragg-cell receiver. Probability density function analysis are performed for output frequency. Probability density function distributions are observed to depart from assumed distributions for wideband and complex RF signals. This analysis is significant for high resolution and fine grain EW Bragg-cell receiver systems.

Optical measurement of propeller blade deflections

A nonintrusive optical method for measurement of propeller blade deflections is described and evaluated. It does not depend on the reflectivity of the blade surface but only on its opaqueness. Deflection of a point at the leading edge and a point at the trailing edge in a plane nearly perpendicular to the pitch axis is obtained using a single light beam generated by a low-power helium-neon laser. Quantitative analyses are performed from taped signals on a digital computer. Averaging techniques are employed to reduce random errors. Measured deflections from a static and a high-speed test are compared with available predicted deflections which are also used to evaluate systematic errors.

Optical measurement of unducted fan blade deflections

A nonintrusive optical method for measuring unducted fan (or propeller) blade deflections is described and evaluated. The measurement does not depend on blade surface reflectivity. Deflection of a point at the leading edge and a point at the trailing edge in a plane nearly perpendicular to the pitch axis is obtained with a single light beam generated by a low-power, helium-neon laser. Quantitiative analyses are performed from taped signals on a digital computer. Averaging techniques are employed to reduce random errors. Measured static deflections from a series of high-speed wind tunnel tests of a counterrotating unducted fan model are compared with available, predicted deflections, which are also used to evaluate systematic errors.

The Atlas-Centaur 67 incident

The conditions leading to the breakup of the Atlas-Centaur 67 (AC-67) vehicle launched on March 26, 1987 during a typical winter-time storm are analyzed, and a most probable lightning strike scenario was developed based on inspection of the AC-67 debris, the AC-68 vehicle, and appropriate drawings, electrical diagrams, and photographs. It is shown that, during ascent, the vehicle encountered increasingly larger electric fields and flew through clouds that produced precipitation static on the vehicle, eventually triggering a cloud-to-ground lightning, comprised of at least four return strokes. The resulting lightning current coupled a signal into the wiring which goes to the AC-67 digital computer unit (DCU), effecting a single-word memory alteration and causing the DCU to issue a hardover engine gimbal command. This led to an excessive angle of attack, large dynamic loads, and the breakup of the AC-67.

Symbolic modeling of flexible manipulators

An algorithm is presented to symbolically derive the full nonlinear dynamic equations of motion of multilink flexible manipulators. Lagrange's assumed modes method is the basis of new algorithm and adapted in a way suitable for symbolic manipulation by digital computers. It is applied to model a two-link flexible arm by means of a commercially available symbolic manipulation program. The advantages of the algorithm and simulation results are discussed.

Sparse distributed memory prototype: Principles of operation

Sparse distributed memory is a generalized random access memory (RAM) for long binary words. Such words can be written into and read from the memory, and they can be used to address the memory. The main attribute of the memory is sensitivity to similarity, meaning that a word can be read back not only by giving the original right address but also by giving one close to it as measured by the Hamming distance between addresses. Large memories of this kind are expected to have wide use in speech and scene analysis, in signal detection and verification, and in adaptive control of automated equipment. The memory can be realized as a simple, massively parallel computer. Digital technology has reached a point where building large memories is becoming practical. The research is aimed at resolving major design issues that have to be faced in building the memories. The design of a prototype memory with 256-bit addresses and from 8K to 128K locations for 256-bit words is described. A key aspect of the design is extensive use of dynamic RAM and other standard components.

Stability of a rigid rotor supported on oil-film journal bearings under dynamic load

Most published work relating to dynamically loaded journal bearings are directed to determining the minimum film thickness from the predicted journal trajectories. These do not give any information about the subsynchronous whirl stability of journal bearing systems since they do not consider the equations of motion. It is, however, necessary to know whether the bearing system operation is stable or not under such an operating condition. The stability characteristics of the system are analyzed. A linearized perturbation theory about the equilibrium point can predict the threshold of stability; however it does not indicate postwhirl orbit detail. The linearized method may indicate that a bearing is unstable for a given operating condition whereas the nonlinear analysis may indicate that it forms a stable limit cycle. For this reason, a nonlinear transient analysis of a rigid rotor supported on oil journal bearings under: (1) a unidirectional constant load, (2) a unidirectional periodic load, and (3) variable rotating load are performed. The hydrodynamic forces are calculated after solving the time-dependent Reynolds equation by a finite difference method with a successive overrelaxation scheme. Using these forces, equations of motion are solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to predict the transient behavior of the rotor. With the aid of a high-speed digital computer and graphics, the journal trajectories are obtained for several different operating conditions.

Advanced altimetry

The radar altimeter being developed for the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX) will have an inherent instrument precision of 2 to 3 cm. While some minor refinements may be possible in the future, major geophysical advances could be made if altimetric measurements over a wide swath of the Earth's surface were possible. The NASA Headquarters Oceanic Processes Branch is supporting a 3-year investigation of the technological issues inherent in the precision measurement of topography from spaceborne platforms at angles off-nadir. To explore the off-nadir measurement of topography, a flexible, airborne radar instrument system is being developed. Its hardware design is now complete, and it is made up of several subsystems. The antenna selected is a dielectric lens of .894 m diameter. The RF subsystem uses phase-locked oscillators, FET solid-state amplifiers, and times four frequency multipliers to develop a transmit signal at a frequency of 36.0 GHz and a local oscillator signal at a frequency of 35.4 GHz. Lecroy 6880 digitizers under computer control digitize the five receiver outputs. The digital subsystem consists of six single-board Heurikon processors. At this time, the instrument construction continues with final system integration planned for November 1988.

Real-time optical holographic tracking of multiple objects

A coherent optical correlation technique for real-time simultaneous tracking of several different objects making independent movements is described, and experimental results are presented. An evaluation of this system compared with digital computing systems is made. The real-time processing capability is obtained through the use of a liquid crystal television spatial light modulator and a dichromated gelatin multifocus hololens. A coded reference beam is utilized in the separation of the output correlation plane associated with each input target so that independent tracking can be achieved.

Space telescope pointing control

The Space Telescope pointing control system is designed to meet the fine pointing performance of 0.007 arc-sec stability, maneuver the telescope 90 deg in 18 min, or less, and provide the capability for deployment from, and retrieval by, the space shuttle. The pointing control system objectives are met using fine guidance sensors for attitude information, reaction wheel assemblies sized to provide both the torque required for pointing, and magnetometers and magnetic torquers for momentum management. A digital computer is used to calculate the control law, attitude reference, momentum management law, and command generator. The command generator shapes the acceleration and incremental angle commands to the control system to limit structural mode excitation. The control techniques are briefly discussed.
