Design of a shipping fixture for a compact cryomodule hermetic assembly

Two conduction-cooled 915 MHz superconducting radio frequency hermetic assemblies must be safely transported from the Jefferson Lab in Newport News, VA to General Atomics in San Diego, CA for perfor-mance testing in a custom horizontal test cryostat. One hermetic assembly consists of a 2-cell 915 MHz cavity, a coaxial fundamental power coupler, and the warm-to-cold transition beam tubes. The second hermetic assembly consists of a 2-cell 915 MHz cavity only. The assemblies will be transported on a flatbed air-ride trailer over the approximate 4000 km distance. Design requirements included adequate attenuation of 4g vertical axis, 5g beamline axis, and 1.5g lateral axis shock events. The isolation system was designed using helical wire-rope isolators with modal and transient finite element analysis performed in Ansys. Results show shock attenuation of a 10 ms half-sine pulse input to < 1g in the vertical axis, < 1.5g in the beam-line axis, and < 0.5g in the lateral axis for both assem-blies at the specified design loads and all structural stresses are kept below the material yield limits. Addi-tionally, the natural frequencies of both isolation sys-tems adequately attenuate the fundamental modes of the critical structures.

Optimal Control and Architecture Design Optimization for Hydraulic Drive Train of a Compact Track Loader

Hydrostatic transmission (HST) is a common hydraulic drive train transmission used in track loaders and other high power off-road vehicles. While reliable, traditional HST with fixed-displacement motors has relatively poor efficiencies. In this paper, alternative HST and series hybrid drive train architectures are proposed to replace the traditional HST to allow the implementation of optimal control and optimization methods for better vehicle fuel efficiency. Besides the optimal control methods applied to minimize fuel consumption, the proposed architectures are also optimized for the best configuration in terms of component sizing. Backward-facing (acausal) simulation models were developed to estimate the fuel efficiency of each architecture. Finally, each architecture is compared for optimized performance and fuel saving relative to the traditional HST as baseline.

Data reduction through optimized scalar quantization for more compact neural networks

Raw data generation for several existing and planned large physics experiments now exceeds TB/s rates, generating untenable data sets in very little time. Those data often demonstrate high dimensionality while containing limited information. Meanwhile, Machine Learning algorithms are now becoming an essential part of data processing and data analysis. Those algorithms can be used offline for post processing and post data analysis, or they can be used online for real time processing providing ultra low latency experiment monitoring. Both use cases would benefit from data throughput reduction while preserving relevant information: one by reducing the offline storage requirements by several orders of magnitude and the other by allowing ultra fast online inferencing with low complexity Machine Learning models. Moreover, reducing the data source throughput also reduces material cost, power and data management requirements. In this work we demonstrate optimized nonuniform scalar quantization for data source reduction. This data reduction allows lower dimensional representations while preserving the relevant information of the data, thus enabling high accuracy Tiny Machine Learning classifier models for online fast inferences. We demonstrate this approach with an initial proof of concept targeting the CookieBox, an array of electron spectrometers used for angular streaking, that was developed for LCLS-II as an online beam diagnostic tool. We used the Lloyd-Max algorithm with the CookieBox dataset to design an optimized nonuniform scalar quantizer. Optimized quantization lets us reduce input data volume by 69% with no significant impact on inference accuracy. When we tolerate a 2% loss on inference accuracy, we achieved 81% of input data reduction. Finally, the change from a 7-bit to a 3-bit input data quantization reduces our neural network size by 38%.

A Study of Integrated Signal and Power Transfer for Compact Isolated SiC MOSFET Gate-Drivers

This work discusses a novel set of alternate implementations of isolated gate driver circuits for power electronic transistors. The proposed topologies for the driver have been designed specifically for SiC power MOSFET. Three different solutions are discussed, all of them providing the required gate turn-on and turn-off command signal with galvanic isolation, but also supplying power to the secondary side of the driver by means of magnetic transformers. The resulting solutions, all of them implemented with simple circuitry, enable the integration of the driver into the power cell, allowing for theoretical higher power density values in the final system. The principle of operation of the different solutions is discussed, and then the main relevant implementation details are presented. After that, the operation of the circuits is demonstrated experimentally, by testing a set of prototypes of these drivers. This provides a comprehensive design example that assesses the feasibility of the proposed solutions. Finally, the main results of the performance of the three gate drivers, on an SiC MOSFET-based prototype are presented and compared.

PUSHing Core-collapse Supernovae to Explosions in Spherical Symmetry. V. Equation of State Dependency of Explosion Properties, Nucleosynthesis Yields, and Compact Remnants

Abstract In this fifth paper of the series, we use the parameterized, spherically symmetric explosion method PUSH to investigate the impact of eight different nuclear equations of state (EOS). We present and discuss the explosion properties and the detailed nucleosynthesis yields, and predict the remnant (neutron star or black hole) for all our simulations. For this, we perform two sets of simulations. First, a complete study of nonrotating stars from 11 to 40 M ⊙ at three different metallicities using the SFHo EOS; and, second, a suite of simulations for four progenitors (16 M ⊙ at three metallicities and 25 M ⊙ at solar metallicity) for eight different nuclear EOS. We compare our predicted explosion energies and yields to observed supernovae and to the metal-poor star HD 84937. We find EOS-dependent differences in the explosion properties and the nucleosynthesis yields. However, when comparing to observations, these differences are not large enough to rule out any EOS considered in this work.

Ignition of Carbon Burning from Nuclear Fission in Compact Stars

Abstract Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) are powerful stellar explosions that provide important distance indicators in cosmology. Recently, we proposed a new SN Ia mechanism that involves a nuclear fission chain reaction in an isolated white dwarf (WD). The first solids that form as a WD starts to freeze are actinide rich and potentially support a fission chain reaction. In this Letter, we explore thermonuclear ignition from fission heating. We perform thermal diffusion simulations and find at high densities, above about 7 × 10 8 g cm −3 , that fission heating can ignite carbon burning. This could produce an SN Ia or another kind of astrophysical transient.
