Search for the doubly heavy $ {\Xi}_{bc}^0 $ baryon via decays to D0pK-

A search for the doubly heavy \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) baryon using its decay to the D 0 pK – final state is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb - 1 . No significant signal is found in the invariant mass range from 6.7 to 7.2 GeV/ c 2 . Upper limits are set at 95% credibility level on the ratio of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) production cross-section times its branching fraction to D 0 pK - relative to that of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^0{pK}^{-} \) decay. The limits are set as a function of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and in the transverse momentum region from 5 to 25 GeV/ c . Upper limits range from 1 . 7 × 10 - 2 to 3 . 0 × 10 - 1 for the considered \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses.

Hidden sector monopole dark matter with matter domination

The thermal freeze-out mechanism for relic dark matter heavier than O (10 – 100 TeV) requires cross-sections that violate perturbative unitarity. Yet the existence of dark matter heavier than these scales is certainly plausible from a particle physics perspective, pointing to the need for a non-thermal cosmological history for such theories. Topological dark matter is a well-motivated scenario of this kind. Here the hidden-sector dark matter can be produced in abundance through the Kibble-Zurek mechanism describing the non-equilibrium dynamics of defects produced in a second order phase transition. We revisit the original topological dark matter scenario, focusing on hidden-sector magnetic monopoles, and consider more general cosmological histories. We find that a monopole mass of order (1–10 5 ) PeV is generic for the thermal histories considered here, if monopoles are to entirely reproduce the current abundance of dark matter. In particular, in a scenario involving an early era of matter domination, the monopole number density is always less than or equal to that in a pure radiation dominated equivalent provided a certain condition on critical exponents is satisfied. This results in a larger monopole mass needed to account for a fixed relic abundance in such cosmologies.

Radiative Corrections to Neutron Beta Decay and (Anti)Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering from Low-Energy Effective Field Theory

Herein we study radiative corrections to neutron beta decay and low-energy (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering within a top-down effective field theory approach. As it was recently shown, a few electromagnetic and electroweak low-energy coupling constants in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory are yet to be determined. Performing matching to the four-fermion effective field theory, we relate these low-energy constants to correlation functions of vector and axial-vector currents. Such relations allow us to explicitly clarify scheme dependence for radiative corrections to neutron decay and low-energy charged-current (anti)neutrino scattering, provide a robust prediction of leading in the electromagnetic coupling constant contributions, and achieve a clear separation between short-distance and long-distance contributions.

Understanding parton evolution in matter from renormalization group analysis

We perform a renormalization group (RG) analysis of collinear hadron production in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei. We consider the limit where the parent parton energy E is large, while the medium opacity remains small. We identify the fixed order and leading enhanced medium contributions to the semi-inclusive cross sections and derive RG equations that resum multiple emissions near the endpoints of the splitting functions at first order in opacity. These evolution equations treat the same type of radiation enhancement in matter as the modified Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi approach, but differ in the way one regulates the collinear divergences. They provide a unique analytic insight into the problem of resummation and a faster and more efficient path to phenomenology. The new RG evolution framework is applied to study fragmentation in eA reactions.

Spin-orbit entanglement in the Color Glass Condensate

We compute the spin-orbit correlations of quarks and gluons at small-x and show that the helicity and the orbital angular momentum of individual partons are strongly anti-aligned even in unpolarized or spinless hadrons and nuclei. Combined with the fact that gluons in the Color Glass Condensate are linearly polarized, our finding indicates that the helicity and the orbital angular momentum of single gluons are maximally entangled in a quantum mechanical sense.

Observation of structure in the J/ψ-pair mass spectrum

Using proton-proton collision data at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 , the invariant mass spectrum of J/ψ pairs is studied. A narrow structure around 6.9 GeV/c 2 matching the lineshape of a resonance and a broad structure just above twice the J/ψ mass are observed. The deviation of the data from nonresonant J/ψ-pair production is above five standard deviations in the mass region between 6.2 and 7.4 GeV/c 2 , covering predicted masses of states composed of four charm quarks. The mass and natural width of the narrow X(6900) structure are measured assuming a Breit-Wigner lineshape.

Room-Temperature Optical Detection of 14 CO 2 below the Natural Abundance with Two-Color Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy

Radiocarbon’s natural production, radiative decay, and isotopic rarity make it a unique tool to probe carbonaceous systems in the life and earth sciences. However, the difficulty of current radiocarbon ( 14 C) detection methods limits scientific adoption. Here, two-color cavity ring-down spectroscopy detects 14 CO 2 in room-temperature samples with an accuracy of one-tenth the natural abundance in 3 min. The intracavity pump–probe measurement uses two cavity-enhanced lasers to cancel out cavity ring-down rate fluctuations and strong one-photon absorption interference (>10 000 1/s) from hot-band transitions of CO 2 isotopologues. Selective, room-temperature detection of small 14 CO 2 absorption signals (<1 1/s) reduces the technical and operational burdens for cavity-enhanced measurements of radiocarbon, which can benefit a wide range of applications like biomedical research and field-detection of combusted fossil fuels.

Problem with gradual absorption in MSD/MSC calculations

Replacing classical exciton model with the better founded Multistep Direct (MSD) and Multistep Compound (MSC) mechanisms has been impeded by incapability of the latter models to describe central part of the neutron emission spectra at incident neutron energies of about 14 MeV and above. We have ascribed this deficiency to the decrease of absorption to the MSC mechanism resulting from the concept of gradual absorption. We were able to obtain very good reproduction of experimentally measured neutron spectra using MSD/MSC calculations when this option was turned off. Such treatment is, however, at odds with the fundamental distinction between MSD and MSC mechanisms that should proceed through the chain of open (P-space) and closed (Q-space) configurations respectively. By blocking gradual absorption we allow the first stage of MSC to be fully populated from the incident channel that at higher incident energies is impossible. We discuss various attempts of addressing the problem that, so far, remains open. In addition, we present an evidence for much tighter spin distribution of particle-hole states than normally assumed.

Density functional study of the variants of inter-Coulombic decay resonances in the photoionization of Cl@C 60

Inter-Coulombic decay (ICD) resonances in the photoionization of Cl@C 60 endofullerene molecule are calculated using a perturbative density functional theory (DFT) method. This is the first ICD study of an open shell atom in a fullerene cage. Here, three classes of resonances are probed: (i) Cl inner vacancies decaying through C 60 outer continua, (ii) C 60 inner vacancies decaying through Cl outer continua, and (iii) inner vacancies of either system decaying through the continua of Cl-C 60 hybrid levels, the hybrid Auger-ICD resonances. Comparisons with Ar@C 60 results reveal that the properties of hybrid Auger-ICD resonances are affected by the extent of level hybridization.

Searching for the axion-like particle at the EIC*

Abstract The axion-like particle (ALP) is a well motivated new particle candidate for beyond the standard model. In this study, we propose to probe the ALP via photon fusion scattering at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with electron and proton energies of and , respectively. We can constrain the effective coupling strength between the ALP and photons to be at the confidence level with an integrated luminosity of for the mass range . Such bounds may be significantly improved if we consider the nucleus beam at the EIC. We also demonstrate that the limits from the EIC can be stronger than the off Z -pole measurement at the LEP and light-by-light scattering with pp collisions at the LHC.

Isospin-breaking contributions to ε '/ε

We present an updated analysis of isospin-violating corrections to ε '/ε in the framework of chiral perturbation theory, taking advantage of the currently improved knowledge on quark masses and nonperturbative parameters. The role of the different ingredients entering into the analysis is carefully assessed. Our final result is ${\Omega }_{\text{eff}}={0.110}_{-0.088}^{+0.090}$ [1].

Construction of precision wire readout planes for the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND)

The Short-Baseline Near Detector time projection chamber is unique in the design of its charge readout planes. These anode plane assemblies (APAs) have been fabricated and assembled to meet strict accuracy and precision requirements: wire spacing of 3 mm ± 0.5 mm and wire tension of 7 N ± 1 N across 3,964 wires per APA, and flatness within 0.5 mm over the 4 m × 2.5 m extent of each APA . Here, we describe the design, manufacture and assembly of these key detector components, with a focus on the quality assurance at each stage.
