Photophysical Properties and Electronic Structure of Hydroporphyrin Dyads Exhibiting Strong Through-Space and Through-Bond Electronic Interactions

Electronic interactions between tetrapyrroles are utilized in natural photosynthetic systems to tune the light-harvesting and energy/charge-transfer processes in these assemblies. Such interactions also can be employed to tailor the electronic properties of tetrapyrrolic dyads and larger arrays for use in materials science and biomedical research. Here we have utilized static and time-resolved optical spectroscopy to characterize the optical absorption and emission properties of a set of chlorin and bacteriochlorin dyads with varied degrees of through-bond (TB) and through-space (TS) interactions between the constituent macrocycles. The dyads consist of two chlorins or two bacteriochlorins joined by a linker that utilizes a triple-double-triple bond (enediyne) motif in which the double bond portion is a ester-substituted ethylene or o-phenylene unit. The photophysical studies are coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to probe the ground-state molecular orbital (MO) characteristics of the dyads and time-dependent calculations (TDDFT) to elucidate excited-state properties. The latter include electronic characteristics of the singlet excited state manifold and the absorption transitions to these states from the electronic ground state. Comparison of the MO and calculated spectral properties of each dyad with the linker present versus disrupted (by eliminating the double-bond portion) gives insight into the relative contributions of TB versus TS interactions to the electronic properties of the dyads. The results show that the TB and TS contributions are additive (constructively interfere), which is not always the case for molecular dyads. Most of the dyads have shorter lifetimes of the lowest singlet excited state compared to the parent monomer, which derives from increased S 1 → S 0 internal conversion. The enhancement is greater for the dyads in benzonitrile than in toluene. Furthermore, the studies provide insights into the nature of the electronic interactions between the constituents in the tetrapyrrole arrays and how these interactions dictate the spectral properties and excited-state decay characteristics.

Structural and physical properties of two distinct 2D lead halides with intercalated Cu( II )

Transition metal cation intercalation between the layers of two-dimensional (2D) metal halides is an underexplored research area. In this work we focus on the synthesis and physical property characterizations of two layered hybrid lead halides: a new compound [Cu(O 2 C–CH 2 –NH 2 ) 2 ]Pb 2 Br 4 and the previously reported [Cu(O 2 C–(CH 2 ) 3 –NH 3 ) 2 ]PbBr 4 . These compounds exhibit 2D layered crystal structures with incorporated Cu 2+ between the metal halide layers, which is achieved by combining Cu(II) and lead bromide with suitable amino acid precursors. The resultant [Cu(O 2 C–(CH 2 ) 3 –NH 3 ) 2 ]PbBr 4 adopts a 2D layered perovskite structure, whereas the new compound [Cu(O 2 C–CH 2 –NH 2 ) 2 ]Pb 2 Br 4 crystallizes with a new structure type based on edge-sharing dodecahedral PbBr5O3 building blocks. [Cu(O 2 C–CH 2 –NH 2 ) 2 ]Pb 2 Br 4 is a semiconductor with a bandgap of 3.25 eV. It shows anisotropic charge transport properties with a semiconductor resistivity of 1.44 × 10 10 Ω cm (measured along the a-axis) and 2.17 × 10 10 Ω cm (along the bc-plane), respectively. The fabricated prototype detector based on this material showed response to soft low-energy X-rays at 8 keV with a detector sensitivity of 1462.7 μCGy –1 cm –2 , indicating its potential application for ionizing radiation detection. Finally, these encouraging results are discussed together with the results from density functional theory calculations, optical, magnetic, and thermal property characterization experiments.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Optical Properties of the Barium meta -Pertechnetate Ba[TcO 4 ] 2

High-quality single crystals of the colorless title compound Ba[ 99 TcO 4 ] 2 were prepared from radioactive, isotope-pure 99 TcO 2 by oxidation with H 2 O 2 in an aqueous ammonia solution and subsequent cation metathesis using an ion-exchange column. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 to crystallize isotopically to Ba[MnO 4 ] 2 in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with the lattice parameters a = 747.34(5) pm, b = 1244.08(7) pm, and c = 1511.23(9) pm for Z = 8. Its crystal structure features [BaO 12 ] 22- icosahedra surrounded by ten [TcO 4 ] - tetrahedra connected via two edges and eight corners. The optical properties of Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy show the broad O 2- → Tc 7+ ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2p → 4d) process within these discrete [TcO 4 ]- anions at an absorption maximum of around 350 nm.

Synthesis, Structure, and Photophysical Properties of Platinum Compounds with Thiophene-Derived Cyclohexyl Diimine Ligands

Platinum(II) and platinum(IV) compounds were prepared by the stereoselective and regioselective reactions of thiophene-derived cyclohexyl diimine C^N^N-ligands with [Pt 2 Me 4 (μ-SMe 2 ) 2 ]. Newly synthesized ligands were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and Pt(II)/Pt(IV) compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. UV–vis absorbance and photoluminescence measurements were performed on newly synthesized complexes, as well as structurally related Pt(II)/Pt(IV) compounds with benzene-derived cyclohexyl diimine ligands, in dichloromethane solution, as solids, and as 5% by weight PMMA-doped films. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed, and the results were compared with the observed spectroscopic properties of the newly synthesized complexes. X-ray total scattering measurements and real space pair distribution function analysis were performed on the synthesized complexes to examine the local- and intermediate-range atomic structures of the emissive solid states.

Er Al :Al 2 ⁢O 3 for telecom-band photonics: Electronic structure and optical properties

Er-doped Al 2 ⁢O 3 is a promising host for telecom-band integrated photonics. Here, in this study, we combine ab initio calculations with a symmetry-resolved analysis to elucidate substitutional Er on the Al site (Er Al ) in 𝛼−Al 2 ⁢O 3 . First-principles relaxations confirm the structural stability of Er Al . We then use the local trigonal crystal-field symmetry to classify the Er-derived impurity levels by irreducible representations and to derive polarization-resolved electric-dipole selection rules, explicitly identifying the symmetry-allowed 𝑓−𝑑 hybridization channels. Kubo-Greenwood absorption spectra computed from Kohn-Sham states quantitatively corroborate these symmetry predictions. Furthermore, we connect the calculated intra-4⁢𝑓 line strengths to Judd-Ofelt theory, clarifying the role of 4⁢𝑓−5⁢𝑑 admixture in enabling optical activity. Notably, we predict a characteristic absorption near 1.47 µ⁢m (telecom band), relevant for on-chip amplification and emission. To our knowledge, a symmetry-resolved first-principles treatment of Er:Al 2 ⁢O 3 with an explicit Judd-Ofelt interpretation has not been reported, providing a transferable framework for tailoring rare-earth dopants in wide-band-gap oxides for integrated photonics. Our results for the optical spectra are in good agreement with experimental data. The resulting symmetry-based selection rules translate directly to polarization-dependent coupling in Al 2 ⁢O 3 integrated photonic waveguides and resonators, enabling device-level design of TE/TM-mode interaction with Er emitters in the 1.5-µ⁢m telecom band.

Ab initio studies of the impact of the Debye-Waller factor on the structural and dynamical properties of amorphous semiconductors: The case of a-Si

This paper presents a first-principles study of the Debye-Waller factor and the Debye temperature for amorphous silicon (a-Si) from lattice-dynamical calculations and direct molecular-dynamics simulations using density-functional theory (DFT). The effects of temperature and structural disorder on the intensity of the diffraction maxima and the vibrational mean-square displacement (MSD) of Si atoms are studied in the harmonic approximation, with particular emphasis on the bond-length disorder, the presence of coordination defects, and microvoids in a-Si networks. It has been observed that the MSDs associated with tetrahedrally-bonded Si atoms are considerably lower than their dangling-bond counterparts – originating from isolated and vacancy-induced clustered defects – and those on the surface of microvoids, leading to an asymmetric non-gaussian tail in the distribution of atomic displacements. An examination of the effect of anharmonicity on the MSD at high temperatures using direct ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations (without the harmonic approximation) suggests that the vibrational motion in a-Si is practically unaffected by anharmonic effects at temperatures below 400 K, as far as the present DFT calculations are concerned. The Debye temperature of a-Si is found to be in the range of 488–541 K from specific-heat and MSD calculations using first-principles lattice-dynamical calculations in the harmonic approximation, which matches closely with the experimental value of 487–528 K obtained from specific-heat measurements of a-Si at low temperatures.

Electronic, structural and magnetic properties of Mn (1+x) Pt (1-x) Sb

Electronic and magnetic properties of half-metallic Heusler alloys can be modified by tuning their chemical compositions. We have carried out a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of Mn (1+x) Pt (1-x) Sb (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) alloys. Our first-principles calculations indicate that the stoichiometric MnPtSb exhibits nearly half-metallic band structure, but a robust half-metallicity can be achieved in Mn-rich compositions Mn (1+x) Pt (1-x) Sb (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) with x = 0.25 and higher in their cubic structures. In addition, while MnPtSb exhibits ferromagnetic alignment, Mn (1+x) Pt (1-x) Sb are ferrimagnetic for all non-zero values of x. We have also synthesized cubic MnPtSb and Mn 1.25 Pt 0.75 Sb alloys using arc melting and annealing. The magnetic properties of these alloys are consistent with our theoretical predictions. Furthermore, these results indicate that the Mn-rich Mn (1+x) Pt (1-x) Sb alloys have potential for spin-transport-based devices.

Impact of cobalt doping on structural and magnetic properties of zinc oxide nanocomposites synthesized by mechanical ball-milling method

A series of zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductor nanocomposite samples doped with different concentrations of cobalt (Co) were successfully synthesized via simple and highly effective mechanical ball-milling method using suitable precursors. All doped nanocomposites crystallized in hexagonal wurtzite formation of ZnO. No alteration in the wurtzite structure, with no evidence of any segregated secondary phase(s) was detected with increasing doping concentrations. This result unambiguously verified the substitution of Zn 2+ sites by Co 2+ ions in the ZnO host lattice for different doping concentrations. Moreover, room temperature ferromagnetic behavior was observed in all doped nanocomposite samples in the reported work. Present study clearly shows that mechanical ball-milling is a facile, inexpensive, eco-friendly method to synthesize crystalline and magnetic Co doped ZnO nanocomposites for next generation spin-based devices.

First-principles calculation of lattice distortion, electronic structure, and bonding properties of GeTe-based and PbSe-based high-entropy chalcogenides

The massive amount of wasted heat energy from industry has pushed the development of thermoelectric (TE) materials that directly convert heat into electricity to a new level of concern. Recently, multicomponent alloys such as GeTe-based and PbSe-based high-entropy (HE) chalcogenides have attracted a great deal of attention due to their potential application as TE materials. The nature of the interatomic bonding, lattice distortion (LD), and the electronic structure in this class of materials is not fully understood. Herein, we report a comprehensive computational investigation of nine GeTe-based HE alloys with eight metallic elements (Ag, Pb, Sb, Bi, Cu, Cd, Mn, and Sn) with large supercells of 1080 atoms each; seven PbSe-based HE solid solutions: Pb0.99−ySb0.012SnySe1−2xTexSx (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, with y = 0) with supercells of 1000 atoms each; and five Pb0.99−ySb0.012SnySe1−2xTexSx (y = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25 with x = 0.25) solid solutions with supercells of 1000 atoms each. All these HE models are theoretically investigated for the first time. The electronic structure, interatomic bonding, charge transfer, and lattice distortion (LD) are investigated by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. Multicomponent HE alloys can cause a significant LD, which affects their mechanical, thermal, and TE properties. The calculations for the GeTe-based HE chalcogenides showed that they are semiconductors with a narrow bandgap, except for m8, which has a semi-metallic characteristic, and this makes them good candidates for TE applications. For most of these models, the Fermi level shifts upward and locates deeply in the conduction bands, resulting in the enhancement of the electrical conductivity (σ). The bonding properties showed that most bonds in m5 are more dispersed, indicating highest LD and lower lattice thermal conductivity. For PbSe-based HE solid solutions, the LD calculations showed that the models Pb0.99Sb0.012Se0.5Te0.25S0.25 and Pb0.89Sb0.012Sn0.1Se0.5Te0.25S0.25 have the higher LD, and thus a lower lattice thermal conductivity. Such investigations are in high demand since it enables us to design new HE chalcogenides for TE applications. We use the novel concept of total bond order density as a single quantum mechanical metric to characterize the internal cohesion of these HE alloys and correlate with calculated properties, especially the mechanical properties. This work provides a solid database for HE chalcogenides and a road map for many potential applications. Moreover, the computational procedure we developed can be used to design new HE chalcogenides for specific TE applications.

Understanding the impact of SPMAK and PEGPEA in crosslinked PEGDA membranes: Methanol-carboxylate co-transport behavior and correlating structure-physicochemical-transport properties

Investigating multicomponent transport in dense, hydrated polymer membranes is necessary in applications such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, and desalination systems. Of particular interest are photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction cells (PEC-CRC) which produce liquid products such as alcohols (methanol) and carboxylates (formate, acetate). Flux coupling and competitive sorption behavior of these products (solutes) have been found to affect permselectivity, thereby motivating us to investigate fundamental membrane structure-physicochemical-transport relationships. Past research has shown that systematic tuning of crosslinked cation exchange membranes (CEMs) with charge-neutral monoacrylate monomers containing alkyl and phenyl groups (i.e., poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA), and poly(ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate (PEGPEA)) can suppress acetate transport (permeability) in co-permeation with methanol. To further investigate this transport behavior and to enhance membrane ionic conductivities, 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium (SPMAK), a sulfonated monoacrylate monomer is incorporated here. SPMAK content is varied with neutral PEGPEA and diacrylate crosslinker, poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) of two different chain lengths (n = 10 and 13) to prepare membranes of various compositions. Electrochemical and physicochemical properties including ionic conductivity, ion exchange capacity, and water uptake increase with increasing charged SPMAK content. Different states of water within hydrated membranes are probed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), where increasing intermediate (loosely bound) water is observed with increasing hydrophilic SPMAK content. The transport behavior of methanol and carboxylates (formate, acetate, propionate) are investigated, where permeabilities vary as methanol > formate > acetate ≈ propionate. Interestingly, permeabilities decrease with increasing PEGPEA content and are more dependent on solute diffusion than sorption. Permeabilities and diffusivities decrease while permselectivities increase with decreasing PEGDA chain length.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of CeFe 11 M (M = Mo, W)

Tetragonal CeFe 11 Mo (struct. type ThMn 12 , a = 8.529(1) Å, c = 4.766(1) Å, V = 346.68(1) Å 3 ) and novel isostructural CeFe 11 W (a = 8.539(1) Å, c = 4.754(1) Å, V = 346.62(1) Å 3 ) are obtained in bulk, as homogenized single-phase arc-melted alloys. Here, their crystal structures are evaluated by full profile Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction patterns which confirm that Ce occupies the 2a atomic site in both cases, whereas atomic disorder is present in the Fe-sublattice, i.e., predominantly on the dumbbell 8i site and minorly on two other sites 8j and 8f. In CeFe 11 Mo the third element, M, is mixed with Fe on the 8i dumbbell site and 8f atomic position, whereas in CeFe 11 W, M is mixed on the 8i and 8j Fe sites. In these bulk CeFe 12-x M x alloys the tetragonal structure persists at lower M content, x < 1 here, in comparison to known similar alloys, with x > 1. Because of the low M content, comparably higher values of mass magnetization and Curie temperature are achieved i.e., CeFe 11 Mo: ϭ s = 104 emu/g (14.7 µ B /f.u.), T c = 420 K and CeFe 11 W: ϭ s = 99 emu/g (16.5 µ B /f.u.), T c = 450 K. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy is uniaxial with anisotropy fields H a ∼ 14.5 and 16.5 kOe, respectively. Based on Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy enhancements, using tungsten as the stabilizing dopant is more beneficial than molybdenum.

Effects of Oxygen Modification on the Structural and Magnetic Properties of Highly Epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films

Abstract La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 , a strong semi-metallic ferromagnet having robust spin polarization and magnetic transition temperature ( T C ) well above 300 K, has attracted significant attention as a possible candidate for a wide range of memory, spintronic, and multifunctional devices. Since varying the oxygen partial pressure during growth is likely to change the structural and other physical functionalities of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) films, here we report detailed investigations on structure, along with magnetic behavior of LSMO films with same thickness (~30 nm) but synthesized at various oxygen partial pressures: 10, 30, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mTorr. The observation of only ( 00 l ) reflections without any secondary peaks in the XRD patterns confirms the high-quality synthesis of the above-mentioned films. Surface morphology of the films reveals that these films are very smooth with low roughness, the thin films synthesized at 150 mTorr having the lowest average roughness. The increasing of magnetic T C and sharpness of the magnetic phase transitions with increasing oxygen growth pressure suggests that by decreasing the oxygen growth pressure leads to oxygen deficiencies in grown films which induce oxygen inhomogeneity. Thin films grown at 150 mTorr exhibits the highest magnetization with T C = 340 K as these thin films possess the lowest roughness and might exhibit lowest oxygen vacancies and defects. Interpretation and significance of these results in the 30 nm LSMO thin films prepared at different oxygen growth pressures are also presented, along with the existence and growth pressure dependence of negative remanent magnetization (NRM) of the above-mentioned thin films.

Using methodical compositional tuning to optimize Co x Tb 1− x structural and magnetic properties

The Co-rich end of the Co–Tb binary phase diagram (Co x Tb 1−x , x = 0.66–0.82) has been investigated to understand the phases which form in the bulk and how they interact to yield magnetic behavior which has been reported to be ideal for use in spintronic devices. Here, this work shows that the phases and phase fractions present across this composition range follow those predicted by the binary phase diagram, and all compounds in this composition range are multiphase. Magnetic measurements show similar behavior in this composition range to related thin film work, and we attribute the observed behavior to the respective binary phases present in each compound. Ideal magnetic behavior of minimized magnetic saturation and maximized coercivity is observed in the range of x= 0.78 − 0.80 related to the majority phase Co 7 Tb 2 in these two compounds. High pressure magnetic measurements show magnetic saturation and coercivity at 300 K change little with respect to external pressure. The extension of the synthesis of these binaries into the bulk allows for specific binary phases to be targeted and analyzed for consideration in future devices.

Softening by charging: how collective modes of ionic association in concentrated redoxmer/electrolyte solutions define the structural and dynamic properties in different states of charge

Understanding the physical and chemical processes occurring in concentrated electrolyte solutions is required to achieve redox flow batteries with high energy density. Highly concentrated electrolyte solutions are often studied in which collective crowded interactions between molecules and ions become predominant. In this work, experimental and computational methods were used to examine non-aqueous electrolyte solutions in two different states of charge as a function of redoxmer concentration. As the latter increases and the ionic association strengthens, the electric conductivity passes through a maximum and the solution increasingly gels, which is seen through a rapid non-linear increase in viscosity. We establish that the structural rigidity of ionic networks is closely connected with this loss of fluidity and show that charging generally yields softer ionic assemblies with weaker attractive forces and improved dynamical properties.

Effect of Cationic (Na + ) and Anionic (F – ) Co-Doping on the Structural and Electrochemical Properties of LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 Cathode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Elemental doping for substituting lithium or oxygen sites has become a simple and effective technique to improve the electrochemical performance of layered cathode materials. Compared with single-element doping, this work presents an unprecedented contribution to the study of the effect of Na + /F – co-doping on the structure and electrochemical performance of LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 . The co-doped Li 1-z Na z Ni 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2-z F z (z = 0.025) and pristine LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 materials were synthesized via the sol–gel method using EDTA as a chelating agent. Structural analyses, carried out by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealed that the Na + and F – dopants were successfully incorporated into the Li and O sites, respectively. The co-doping resulted in larger Li-slab spacing, a lower degree of cation mixing, and the stabilization of the surface structure, which substantially enhanced the cycling stability and rate capability of the cathode material. The Na/F co-doped LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 electrode delivered an initial specific capacity of 142 mAh g –1 at a 1C rate (178 mAh g –1 at 0.1C), and it maintained 50% of its initial capacity after 1000 charge–discharge cycles at a 1C rate.

Structural and magnetic properties of iodide-mediated chemically synthesized L1 2 FePt 3 nanoparticles

In this work, we study the effect of elemental iodine as a halide intermediary in the synthesis of FePt 3 nanoparticles using a co-reduction of Fe(acac) 3 and (NH 4 ) 2 PtCl 2 with 1,2-hexadecanediol. Our study shows that elemental iodine facilitates the formation of FePt 3 nanoparticles with the L1 2 structure. When iodine is not used, the as-made nanoparticles have mostly the disordered fcc FePt 3 structure. The as-made nanoparticles are ferromagnetic and have a Curie temperature close to 380 K. Annealing of the as-made nanoparticles leads to an increased particle size and a transformation to the ordered L1 2 FePt 3 phase. Nanoparticles annealed at 700°C for 30 minutes show a mixture of two magnetic phases, a ferromagnetic phase with a lower ordering temperature of ~300 K and an antiferromagnetic phase with a Néel temperature around 135 K.

Effect of Branch Length on the Structural and Separation Properties of Hyperbranched Poly(1,3-dioxolane)

Polymers containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) demonstrate superior membrane CO 2 /N 2 separation properties owing to their polar ether oxygen groups exhibiting strong affinity toward CO2. Poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDXL) shows an ether oxygen content higher than PEO and is expected to have higher CO 2 /N 2 solubility selectivity. However, similar to PEO, the high crystallinity of PDXL greatly reduces its gas permeability. Herein, amorphous PDXL-based hyperbranched polymers were synthesized by ring opening of 1,3-dioxolane (DXL) to form poly(1,3-dioxolane) acrylate (DXLAn) followed by photopolymerization. The repeating unit of DXL (n) or branch length was systematically varied from 4 to 12 to yield amorphous polymers. The chemical and physical properties of the obtained polymers (PDXLAn) were thoroughly evaluated and used to interpret pure- and mixed-gas transport characteristics. The polymers exhibit attractive CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 separation properties. For example, PDXLA8 exhibits a CO 2 permeability of 220 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 56 at 35 °C, surpassing Robeson’s 2008 upper bound, and it shows robust separation performance when evaluated with simulated flue gas at 60 °C. This study demonstrates that hyperbranched structures are an effective route to construct amorphous yet highly polar polymers and that chain end groups are instrumental in determining the structural and gas transport characteristics.
