High‐Field NMR, Reactivity, and DFT Modeling Reveal the γ‐Al 2 O 3 Surface Hydroxyl Network**

Abstract Aluminas are strategic materials used in many major industrial processes, either as catalyst supports or as catalysts in their own right. The transition alumina γ‐Al 2 O 3 is a privileged support, whose reactivity can be tuned by thermal activation. This study provides a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the hydroxyl groups present on the surface of γ‐Al 2 O 3 at three different dehydroxylation temperatures. The principal [AlOH] configurations are identified and described in unprecedented detail at the molecular level. The structures were established by combining information from high‐field 1 H and 27 Al solid‐state NMR, IR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, as well as selective reactivity studies. Finally, the relationship between the hydroxyl structures and the molecular‐level structures of the active sites in catalytic alkane metathesis is discussed.

Influence of Ti‐incorporated Zeolite Topology and Pore Condensation on Vapor Phase Propylene Epoxidation Kinetics with Gaseous H 2 O 2

Abstract Vapor‐phase propylene (C 3 H 6 ) epoxidation kinetics with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) strongly reflects the physical properties of Ti‐incorporated zeolite catalysts and the presence of spectating molecules (“solvent”) near active sites even without a bulk liquid phase. Steady‐state turnover rates of C 3 H 6 epoxidation and product selectivities vary by orders of magnitudes, depending on the zeolite silanol ((SiOH) x ) density, pore topology (MFI, *BEA, FAU), and the quantity of condensed acetonitrile (CH 3 CN) molecules nearby active sites, under identical reaction mechanisms sharing activated H 2 O 2 intermediates on Ti surfaces. Individual kinetic analyses for propylene oxide (PO) ring‐opening, homogeneous diol oxidative cleavage, and homogeneous aldehyde oxidation reveal that secondary reaction kinetics following C 3 H 6 epoxidation responds more sensitively to the changes in zeolite physical properties and pore condensation with CH 3 CN. Thus, higher PO selectivities achieved in hydrophilic Ti‐MFI at steady‐state reflect the preferential stabilization of transition states for C 3 H 6 epoxidation (a primary reaction) relative to PO ring‐opening and oxidative cleavage (secondary reactions) that solvation effects that reflect interactions among condensed CH 3 CN within pores and the extended pore structure.

Caught in the H inact : Crystal Structure and Spectroscopy Reveal a Sulfur Bound to the Active Site of an O 2 -stable State of [FeFe] Hydrogenase

[FeFe] hydrogenases are the most active H 2 converting catalysts in nature, but their extreme oxygen sensitivity limits their use in technological applications. The [FeFe] hydrogenases from sulfate reducing bacteria can be purified in an O 2 -stable state called H inact . To date, the structure and mechanism of formation of H inact remain unknown. Our 1.65 Å crystal structure of this state reveals a sulfur ligand bound to the open coordination site. Furthermore, in-depth spectroscopic characterization by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS), resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, together with hybrid quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) calculations, provide detailed chemical insight into the Hinact state and its mechanism of formation. This may facilitate the design of O 2 -stable hydrogenases and molecular catalysts.

Structural and Spectroscopic Comparison of Soft-Se vs. Hard-O Donor Bonding in Trivalent Americium/Neodymium Molecules

Covalency is often considered to be an influential factor in driving An 3+ vs. Ln 3+ selectivity invoked by soft donor ligands. This is intensely debated, particularly the extent to which An 3+ /Ln 3+ covalency differences prevail and manifest as the f-block is traversed, and the effects of periodic breaks beyond Pu. In this work, two Am complexes, [Am{N(E=PPh 2 ) 2 } 3 ] ( 1-Am , E=Se; 2-Am , E=O) are compared to isoradial [Nd{N(E=PPh 2 ) 2 } 3 ] ( 1-Nd , 2-Nd ) complexes. Covalent contributions are assessed and compared to U/La and Pu/Ce analogues. Through ab initio calculations grounded in UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structures, we observe differences in f orbital involvement between Am–Se and Nd–Se bonds, which are not present in O-donor congeners.

Large Enhancements in Optical and Piezoelectric Properties in Ferroelectric Zn 1- x Mg x O Thin Films through Engineering Electronic and Ionic Anharmonicities

Multifunctionality as a paradigm requires materials exhibiting multiple superior properties. Integrating second-order optical nonlinearity and large bandgap with piezoelectricity can, for example, enable broadband, strain-tunable photonics. Though very different phenomena at distinct frequencies, both second-order optical nonlinearity and piezoelectricity are third-rank polar tensors present only in acentric crystal structures. However, simultaneously enhancing both phenomena is highly challenging since it involves competing effects with tradeoffs. Recently, a large switchable ferroelectric polarization of ≈80 μC cm –2 was reported in Zn 1-x Mg x O films. Here, ferroelectric Zn 1-x Mg x O is demonstrated to be a platform that hosts simultaneously a 30% increase in the electronic bandgap, a 50% enhancement in the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients, and a near 200% improvement in the piezoelectric coefficients over pure ZnO. These enhancements are shown to be due to a 400% increase in the electronic anharmonicity and a ≈200% decrease in the ionic anharmonicity with Mg substitution. Precisely controllable periodic ferroelectric domain gratings are demonstrated down to 800 nm domain width, enabling ultraviolet quasi-phase-matched optical harmonic generation as well as domain-engineered piezoelectric devices.

Understanding the Benefit of Hybrid Electrolytes towards Vanadium Dissolution Suppression and Improved Capacity Retention in Zinc‐Aqueous Batteries Using NaV 3 O 8 Cathodes

Vanadate cathodes used in aqueous Zn-ion batteries with ZnSO 4 are hindered by capacity loss from V dissolution into the electrolyte. However, studies pinpointing the onset of dissolution as a function of electrochemical redox state and quantifying the amount of associated active material are lacking. To prevent dissolution of the NaV 3 O 8 active material, Na + ions are introduced into the electrolyte. Specifically, a hybrid ZnSO 4 + Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte is investigated in concert with NaV 3 O 8 (NVO) cathodes of varied crystallinity to determine the resulting impacts on cathode dissolution and functional electrochemistry. The use of Na + -containing hybrid electrolyte shows no significant change in Zn 2+ diffusion coefficients yet improved capacity retention. Time-resolved quantitative optical emission spectroscopy demonstrates the suppression of V dissolution with the hybrid electrolyte in both pristine and cycled electrodes. Operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and absorption provide mechanistic insights. Hydrated NVO with wider interplanar spacing exhibits much higher H + /Zn 2+ capacity, while the Na 2 SO 4 mitigates the formation of irreversible side products. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the use of hybrid electrolytes and control of crystallite size in the parent material can significantly improve electrochemical behavior of layered V-based cathodes in Zn-ion batteries, providing a general strategy toward safe and resilient aqueous battery systems.

Global Optimization of Adsorbate Covered Supported Cluster Catalysts: The Case of Pt 7 H 10 CH 3 on α-Al 2 O 3

Determining structures of supported sub-nanometer catalytic clusters is important for finding binding sites, active sites, and reaction mechanisms. In realistic conditions, the cluster may be covered with adsorbed reactants and intermediates, which strongly affect the structure of the cluster compared to the low coverage regime. The global optimization of supported adsorbate-covered clusters is not possible with existing methods. In this paper, we present a customized Basin Hopping (BH) approach, with a core (metal cluster) – shell (adsorbates) separation scheme, and perform first applications to the search of low-energy isomers of Pt 7 /α-Al 2 O 3 at high hydrogen coverage (10H). The presence of adsorbates significantly alters the low-energy isomers compared to bare Pt 7 /α-Al 2 O 3 . Molecular dynamics simulations additionally show the different time-scales associated with the mobility of H and Pt atoms. The revised BH method with core-shell separation presents key advantages for the structural exploration of adsorbate-covered supported catalysts, relevant to realistic catalytic conditions.

Revealing the Chemical State of Palladium in Operating In 2 O 3 Gas Sensors: Metallic Pd Enhances Sensing Response and Intermetallic In x Pd y Compound Blocks It

The sensing response of metal oxides activated with noble metal nanoparticles is significantly influenced by changes to the chemical state of corresponding elements under operating conditions. Here, a PdO/rh-In 2 O3 consisting of PdO nanoparticles loaded onto rhombohedral In 2 O 3 was studied as a gas sensor for H 2 gas (100–40000 ppm in an oxygen-free atmosphere) in the temperature range of 25–450 °C. The phase composition and chemical state of elements were examined by resistance measurements combined with synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As found, PdO/rh-In 2 O 3 undergoes a series of structural and chemical transformations during operation: from PdO to Pd/PdH x and finally to the intermetallic In x Pd y phase. The maximal sensing response (R N2 /R H2 ) of ~5 · 10 7 towards 40000 ppm (4 vol %) H 2 at 70 °C is correlated with the formation of PdH 0.706 /Pd. The In x Pd y intermetallic compounds formed around 250 °C significantly decrease the sensing response.

Gallium‐Doping Effects on Structure, Lithium‐Conduction, and Thermochemical Stability of Li 7‐3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 Garnet‐Type Electrolytes

Abstract One of the most promising electrolytes for all‐solid‐state lithium batteries is Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 . Previously, their thermodynamic stability, Li‐ion conductivity, and structural features induced by Ga‐doping have not been empirically determined or correlated. Here, their interplay was examined for Li 7−3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 with target x Ga=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 atoms per formula unit (apfu). Formation enthalpies, obtained with calorimetry and found to be exothermic at all compositions, linearly decreased in stability with increased x Ga. At dilute x Ga substitution, the formation enthalpy curve shifted stepwise endothermically, and the conductivity increased to a maximum, coinciding with 0.529 Ga apfu. This correlated with percolation threshold analysis (0.558 Ga apfu). Further substitution (0.787 Ga apfu) produced a large decrease in the stability and conductivity due to a large increase in point defects and blocked Li‐migration pathways. At x Ga=1.140 apfu, a small exothermic shift was related to defect cluster organization extending the Li hopping distance and decreased Li‐ion conductivity.

Simulation of the Impact of Point Defects and Edge Dislocations on X-Ray Diffraction in Hexagonal (Ni,Co) 1+2 x Ti 1– x O 3 Thin Films

In this work, a computer code for simulating high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) data from disordered crystals with arbitrary spatial composition and local lattice parameters is developed. Simulated patterns are compared with the experimental data collected on a single phase, highly crystalline (Ni 0.42 Co 0.58 ) 2.22 Ti 0.39 O 3 solid-solution thin film exhibiting a large number of subsidiary minima. As a case study, the edge dislocations in hexagonal (Ni,Co) 3 O 3 thin films with Burgers vector parallel and perpendicular to the a-axis and c-axis, respectively, are modeled. No peak profiles are assumed and thus issues related to profile fitting are avoided. Both macroscopic features, such as film thickness, and atomic-scale structure, such as dislocations, are simultaneously modeled. Simulations are run on a desktop machine. Commonly applied database-based phase identification routines can result in wrong phase identification, unless intensities are properly modeled. Modeling tools of diffractometer manufacturers are compared with the present approach. An example of how simulated reciprocal lattice patterns can be used to choose relevant measurement geometries in defected thin films is given.

Surface science insight note: A linear algebraic approach to elucidate native films on Fe 3 O 4 surface

Standard materials are often used to obtain spectra that can be compared to those from unknown samples. Spectra measured from these known substances are also used as a means of computing sensitivity factors to allow quantification by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of less well-defined materials. Spectra from known materials also provide line shapes suitable for inclusion in spectral models which, when fitted to spectra, permit the chemical state for a sample to be assessed. Both types of information depend on isolating photoemission signals from the inelastically scattered signal. In this Insight note, technical issues associated with the use of XPS of as received Fe 3 O 4 powder sample surface are discussed. The Insight note is designed to show how linear algebraic techniques applied to data collected from a sample marketed as pure Fe 3 O 4 powder are used to verify that XPS has been performed on chemistry representative of the sample. The methods described in this Insight note can further be utilized in elucidating complex XPS data obtained from thin films formed or evolved during cyclic/non-steady use of complex (electro)catalyst surfaces, especially in the presence of contaminants.

Ionic Liquid–Directed Nanoporous TiNb 2 O 7 Anodes with Superior Performance for Fast–Rechargeable Lithium–Ion Batteries

Nanoporous TiNb 2 O 7 (NPTNO) material is synthesized by a sol–gel method with an ionic liquid (IL) as the nanoporous structure directing template. NPTNO exhibits a high reversible capacity of 210 mAh g –1 even at the charging rate of 50 C and an excellent cyclability of half-cell capacity retention of 74% for 1000 cycles at 5 C and LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 -coupled full-cell capacity retentions of 81% and 87% for 1000 cycles at 1 C and 2 C, respectively. The studies of the 1000 cycled NPTNO electrode illustrate that the IL-directed mesoporous structure can enhance the cyclability of NPTNO cells due to the alleviation of repetitive mechanical stress and volume fluctuation induced by the repetitive Li + insertion-extraction processes. The measured Li + diffusion coefficients from the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique suggest that the IL-templating strategy indeed ensures the fast rechargeability of NPTNO cells based on the fast Li + diffusion kinetics. Benefitting from the nanoporous structure, NPTNO with unhindered Li + diffusion pathways achieves a superior rate capability in the titanium-based oxide materials and the best full-cell cyclability in the TNO materials. Furthermore, the templating potential of IL is demonstrated, and the superb electrochemical performance establishes the IL-directed NPTNO as a promising anode candidate for fast-rechargeable LIBs.

Single‐Crystal LiNi x Mn y Co 1− x − y O 2 Cathodes for Extreme Fast Charging

Abstract Ni‐rich layered LiNi x Mn y Co 1− x − y O 2 (NMCs, x ≥ 0.8) are poised to be the dominating cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries for the foreseeable future. Conventional polycrystalline NMCs, however, suffer from severe cracking along the grain boundaries of primary particles and capacity loss under high charge and/or discharge rates, hindering their implementation in fast‐charging electric vehicular (EV) batteries. Single‐crystal (SC) NMCs are attractive alternatives as they eliminate intergranular cracking and allow for grain‐level surface optimization for fast Li transport. In the present study, the authors report synthetic approaches to produce SC LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) samples with different morphologies: Oct‐SC811 with predominating (012)‐family surface and Poly‐SC811 with predominating (104)‐family surface. Poly‐SC811, representing the first experimentally synthesized NMC811 single crystals with (104) surface, delivers superior performance even at the ultra‐high rate of 6 C. Through detailed X‐ray analysis and electron microscopy characterization, it is shown that the enhanced performance originates from better chemical and structural stabilities, faster Li + diffusion kinetics, suppressed side reactions with electrolyte, and excellent cracking resistance. These insights provide important design guidelines in the future development of fast‐charging NMC‐type cathode materials.

Molten-Salt Synthesis of O 3 -Type Layered Oxide Single Crystal Cathodes with Controlled Morphology towards Long-Life Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium layered oxides show great promise as affordable alternatives to lithium layered oxides, but their poor cycle life and air stability limit their practical potential. Micron-scale single crystals with greater packing density and lower surface area can overcome these challenges and improve performance compared to the traditional polycrystalline morphology. Herein, the authors present the synthesis of layered O 3 -type Na(Ni 0.3 Fe 0.4 Mn 0.3 )O 2 single-crystals with greatly improved cycle life and air stability. A molten-salt synthesis technique is adopted with excess sodium hydroxide to obtain platelet-like single crystals. Because the main mechanisms of both capacity fade and air degradation occur as a result of surface reactions at the opening of the sodium diffusion channels, particle morphology is found to be a critical metric for materials performance. More important than particle size or total surface area, the smaller proportion of exposed edge planes in the platelet morphology greatly reduces the amount of harmful surface reactions. Furthermore, the molten-salt method is found to eliminate the need for coprecipitated precursors and even form better morphology, starting from metal oxides instead of coprecipitated hydroxides.

Delineating the Impact of Diluent on High-Concentration Electrolytes for Developing High-Voltage LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 Spinel Cathode

LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is a high-voltage spinel cathode with low nickel content, making it an attractive candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its application is limited by interfacial instability with conventional carbonate-based electrolytes at high voltages. In this work, a localized saturated electrolyte (LSE) capable of stably operating up to 4.85 V is investigated. Molecular dynamics simulations and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveal that adding “non-solvating” 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether diluent in the saturated electrolyte, more PF 6 − anions are present in the first solvation shell of Li + , at the expense of solvent molecules. This tailored solvation environment promotes the formation of a robust, LiF-rich cathode-electrolyte interphase that mitigates transition metal dissolution and parasitic side reactions. The optimized LSE enables excellent cycling performance, with 95% capacity retention in Li|LNMO half-cells after 100 cycles and 94% retention in Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 |LNMO full cells after 250 cycles, even at a practically relevant LNMO cathode loading of ≈15 mg cm −2 . In conclusion, these results highlight the benefits of electrolyte engineering and solvation structure control in advancing high-voltage LIB technologies.

Codesigning Alloy Compositions of CdSe y Te 1− y Absorbers and Mg x Zn 1− x O Contacts to Increase Solar Cell Efficiency

Thin‐film solar cells such as CdTe are a major commercial photovoltaic technology, with more than 25 GW installed worldwide and levelized costs of electricity competitive with fossil fuels. Further progress may result from integrating CdSe y Te 1− y absorbers with Mg x Zn 1− x O contacts, but the device efficiency is difficult to maximize due to coupled dependence on chemical composition of both alloys. Herein, a high‐throughput approach is demonstrated to codesign chemical compositions in alloyed Mg x Zn 1− x O/CdSe y Te 1− y thin‐film solar cells, using combinatorial libraries of PV devices with orthogonal composition gradients in CdSe y Te 1− y absorbers and Mg x Zn 1− x O contacts. It is found that the solar cell performance is a strong and coupled function of both elemental compositions, with efficiency up to 17.7% ( V OC = 836 mV, fill factor = 69%, J SC = 30.6 mA cm −2 ) at atomic compositions of Mg/(Mg + Zn) ≈18% and average Se/(Se + Te) ≈4%. These performance trends among >100 devices are explained by >100 ns lifetime of photoexcited charge carriers at the Mg x Zn 1− x O/CdSe y Te 1− y interface where strong Se accumulation is also observed. This study reports the optimal compositions of the commercially relevant Mg x Zn 1− x O/CdSe y Te 1− y solar cells and demonstrates a general approach to codesigning performance of alloyed thin‐film solar cells and other optoelectronic devices.
