Mixed models and reduced/selective integration displacement models for nonlinear analysis of curved beams

Simple mixed models are developed for use in the geometrically nonlinear analysis of deep arches. A total Lagrangian description of the arch deformation is used, the analytical formulation being based on a form of the nonlinear deep arch theory with the effects of transverse shear deformation included. The fundamental unknowns comprise the six internal forces and generalized displacements of the arch, and the element characteristic arrays are obtained by using Hellinger-Reissner mixed variational principle. The polynomial interpolation functions employed in approximating the forces are one degree lower than those used in approximating the displacements, and the forces are discontinuous at the interelement boundaries. Attention is given to the equivalence between the mixed models developed herein and displacement models based on reduced integration of both the transverse shear and extensional energy terms. The advantages of mixed models over equivalent displacement models are summarized. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the high accuracy and effectiveness of the mixed models developed and to permit a comparison of their performance with that of other mixed models reported in the literature.

The impact of pulsed RFI on the coded BER performance of the nonlinear satellite communication channel

An examination is conducted of the coded bit error rate (BER) performance of a satellite communication system in which binary phase-shift-keyed (BPSK) modulation is employed, pulsed CW or pulsed noise RFI is present, and the transponder contains a nonlinearity characterized by arbitrary AM/AM and AM/PM characteristics; the RFI pulse duration is further assumed to exceed that of the information symbol. Computed performance curves consider several hypothetical RFI scenarios in which either a hard limiter or an 8 dB clipper represent the transponder amplitude nonlinearity. Results demonstrate the potential seriousness of RFI duty cycles as low as 2 percent, and the fact that CW represents the most severe form of interference.

Lagrangian methods in nonlinear plasma wave interaction

Analysis of nonlinear plasma wave interactions is usually very complicated, and simplifying mathematical approaches are highly desirable. The application of averaged-Lagrangian methods offers a considerable reduction in effort, with improved insight into synchronism and conservation (Manley-Rowe) relations. This chapter indicates how suitable Lagrangian densities have been defined, expanded, and manipulated to describe nonlinear wave-wave and wave-particle interactions in the microscopic, macroscopic and cold plasma models. Recently, further simplifications have been introduced by the use of techniques derived from Lie algebra. These and likely future developments are reviewed briefly.

Experiments on the nonlinear characteristics of noise propagation from low and moderate Reynolds number supersonic jets

A series of experiments were conducted on high-speed model jets to identify and quantify the distortion of radiated noise by nonlinear propagation effects. The jets were operated in a low to moderate Reynolds number range, and the radiated noise was either broadband or discrete in frequency. Three condenser microphones were used to measure the waveforms propagated by the axisymmetric, cold model jets of Mach numbers 2.1 and 2.5. Relatively low Reynolds numbers were obtained by exhausting the jets into a low pressure anechoic test chamber. Nonlinear propagation distortion effects, such as wave steepening, harmonic generation and wave merging, were easily quantified. At a moderate Reynolds number, low frequency production and wave amalgamation, measured by a decrease in the zero crossings per unit time, were quantified in the propagation of sound away from the jet.

An analysis of a nonlinear instability in the implementation of a VTOL control system

The contributions to nonlinear behavior and unstable response of the model following yaw control system of a VTOL aircraft during hover were determined. The system was designed as a state rate feedback implicit model follower that provided yaw rate command/heading hold capability and used combined full authority parallel and limited authority series servo actuators to generate an input to the yaw reaction control system of the aircraft. Both linear and nonlinear system models, as well as describing function linearization techniques were used to determine the influence on the control system instability of input magnitude and bandwidth, series servo authority, and system bandwidth. Results of the analysis describe stability boundaries as a function of these system design characteristics.

Nonlinear structural and life analyses of a combustor liner

Three dimensional, nonlinear finite element structural analyses were performed for a simulated combustor liner specimen to assess the capability of nonlinear analyses using classical inelastic material models to represent the thermoplastic creep response of the one half scale component. Results indicate continued cyclic hardening and ratcheting while experimental data suggested a stable stress strain response after only a few loading cycles. The computed stress strain history at the critical location was put into two life prediction methods, strainrange partitioning and a Pratt and Whitney combustor life prediction method to evaluate their ability to predict cyclic crack initiation. It is found that the life prediction analyses over predicted the observed cyclic crack initiation life.

Computer modeling of multiple-channel input signals and intermodulation losses caused by nonlinear traveling wave tube amplifiers

The multiple channel input signal to a soft limiter amplifier as a traveling wave tube is represented as a finite, linear sum of Gaussian functions in the frequency domain. Linear regression is used to fit the channel shapes to a least squares residual error. Distortions in output signal, namely intermodulation products, are produced by the nonlinear gain characteristic of the amplifier and constitute the principal noise analyzed in this study. The signal to noise ratios are calculated for various input powers from saturation to 10 dB below saturation for two specific distributions of channels. A criterion for the truncation of the series expansion of the nonlinear transfer characteristic is given. It is found that he signal to noise ratios are very sensitive to the coefficients used in this expansion. Improper or incorrect truncation of the series leads to ambiguous results in the signal to noise ratios.

Large displacements and stability analysis of nonlinear propeller structures

The use of linear rigid formats in COSMIC NASTRAN without DMAP procedures for the analysis of nonlinear propeller structures is described. Approaches for updating geometry and applying follower forces for incremental loading are demonstrated. Comparisons are made with COSMIC NASTRAN rigid formats and other independent finite element programs. Specifically, the comparisons include results from the four approaches for updating the geometry using RIGID FORMAT 1, RIGID FORMATS 4 and 13, MARC and MSC/NASTRAN. It is shown that 'user friendly' updating approaches (without DMAPS) can be used to predict the large displacements and instability of these nonlinear structures. These user friendly approaches can be easily implemented by the user and predict conservative results.

Nonlinear constitutive theory for turbine engine structural analysis

A number of viscoplastic constitutive theories and a conventional constitutive theory are evaluated and compared in their ability to predict nonlinear stress-strain behavior in gas turbine engine components at elevated temperatures. Specific application of these theories is directed towards the structural analysis of combustor liners undergoing transient, cyclic, thermomechanical load histories. The combustor liner material considered in this study is Hastelloy X. The material constants for each of the theories (as a function of temperature) are obtained from existing, published experimental data. The viscoplastic theories and a conventional theory are incorporated into a general purpose, nonlinear, finite element computer program. Several numerical examples of combustor liner structural analysis using these theories are given to demonstrate their capabilities. Based on the numerical stress-strain results, the theories are evaluated and compared.

Transient nonlinear pitch angle scattering of energetic electrons by coherent VLF wave packets in the magnetosphere

Adiabatic theory is used in studying the transient nonlinear pitch angle scattering experienced by energetic electrons under the influence of coherent VLF wave packets in the magnetosphere. Finite wave packets of both fixed and variable frequency are considered, as are wide ranges of L shell, wave amplitude, and wave frequency. The results indicate that large mean pitch angle changes can be induced in the portion of the energetic population that undergoes a nonlinear cyclotron resonance interaction with the wave packet.

On nonlinear finite element analysis in single-, multi- and parallel-processors

Numerical solution of nonlinear equilibrium problems of structures by means of Newton-Raphson type iterations is reviewed. Each step of the iteration is shown to correspond to the solution of a linear problem, therefore the feasibility of the finite element method for nonlinear analysis is established. Organization and flow of data for various types of digital computers, such as single-processor/single-level memory, single-processor/two-level-memory, vector-processor/two-level-memory, and parallel-processors, with and without sub-structuring (i.e. partitioning) are given. The effect of the relative costs of computation, memory and data transfer on substructuring is shown. The idea of assigning comparable size substructures to parallel processors is exploited. Under Cholesky type factorization schemes, the efficiency of parallel processing is shown to decrease due to the occasional shared data, just as that due to the shared facilities.

A tensor approach to modeling of nonhomogeneous nonlinear systems

Model following control methodology plays a key role in numerous application areas. Cases in point include flight control systems and gas turbine engine control systems. Typical uses of such a design strategy involve the determination of nonlinear models which generate requested control and response trajectories for various commands. Linear multivariable techniques provide trim about these motions; and protection logic is added to secure the hardware from excursions beyond the specification range. This paper reports upon experience in developing a general class of such nonlinear models based upon the idea of the algebraic tensor product.

Alfven waves in the solar atmosphere. III - Nonlinear waves on open flux tubes

Consideration is given the nonlinear propagation of Alfven waves on solar magnetic flux tubes, where the tubes are taken to be vertical, axisymmetric and initially untwisted and the Alfven waves are time-dependent axisymmetric twists. The propagation of the waves into the chromosphere and corona is investigated through the numerical solution of a set of nonlinear, time-dependent equations coupling the Alfven waves into motions that are parallel to the initial magnetic field. It is concluded that Alfven waves can steepen into fast shocks in the chromosphere, pass through the transition region to produce high-velocity pulses, and then enter the corona, which they heat. The transition region pulses have amplitudes of about 60 km/sec, and durations of a few tens of seconds. In addition, the Alfven waves exhibit a tendency to drive upward flows, with many of the properties of spicules.

Nonlinear force-free magnetic fields

The nonlinear properties of force-free magnetic fields are reviewed with particular reference to the mechanisms for the sudden release of stored energy in flares during the quasi-steady evolution of solar fields. It is shown that in the solar atmosphere, force-free fields with a nonconstant scalar function in the field equations are more likely to occur than those with a constant scalar function, and the nonlinear properties of these fields may give rise to many interesting physical effects. Consideration is then given to two possible mechanisms of field evolution: a model in which a force-free field in a medium of infinite electrical conductivity evolves in response to slowly changing boundary conditions brought about by photospheric motions in the solar active region, and a model in which a field in a medium of small finite electrical conductivity evolves in response to the slow Ohmic dissipation of the electric current.
