Fungal organic acid uptake of mineral-derived K is dependent on distance from carbon hotspot

Fungal mineral weathering regulates the bioavailability of inorganic nutrients from mineral surfaces to organic matter and increase the bioavailable fraction of nutrients. Such weathering strategies are classified as biomechanical or biochemical. In the case of fungal uptake of mineral nutrients through biochemical weathering, it is widely hypothesized that uptake of inorganic nutrients occurs through organic acid chelation, but such processes have not been directly visualized. This is in part due to challenges in probing the complex and heterogeneous soil environment. Here, using an epoxy-based, mineral-doped soil micromodel platform, which emulates soil mineralogy and porosity, we visualize the molecular mechanisms of mineral weathering. Mass spectrometry imaging revealed differences in the distribution of fungal exudates, citric acid, and tartaric acid on the soil micromodels in presence of minerals. Citric acid was detected closer to the nutrient-rich inoculation point, whereas tartaric acid was highly abundant away from inoculation point. This suggested that the organic acid exuded by the fungi depended on the proximity from the carbon-rich organic substrate at the point of inoculation. Using a combination of X-ray fluorescence and X-ray near edge structure analysis, we identified citric acid- and tartaric acid-bound K within fungal hyphae networks grown in the presence of minerals. Combined, our results provide direct evidence that fungi uptake and transport mineral derived nutrient organic acid chelation. The results of this study provided unprecedented visualization of fungal uptake and transport of K + , while resolving the indirect weathering mechanism of fungal K uptake from mineral interfaces.

Hypersonic engine component experiments in high heat flux, supersonic flow environment

A major concern in advancing the state-of-the-art technologies for hypersonic vehicles is the development of an aeropropulsion system capable of withstanding the sustained high thermal loads expected during hypersonic flight. Even though progress has been made in the computational understanding of fluid dynamics and the physics/chemistry of high speed flight, there is also a need for experimental facilities capable of providing a high heat flux environment for testing component concepts and verifying/calibrating these analyses. A hydrogen/oxygen rocket engine heat source was developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center as one element in a series of facilities at national laboratories designed to fulfill this need. This 'Hot Gas Facility' is capable of providing heat fluxes up to 450 w/sq cm on flat surfaces and up to 5,000 w/sq cm at the leading edge stagnation point of a strut in a supersonic flow stream. Gas temperatures up to 3050 K can also be attained. Two recent experimental programs conducted in this facility are discussed. The objective of the first experiment is to evaluate the erosion and oxidation characteristics of a coating on a cowl leading edge (or strut leading edge) in a supersonic, high heat flux environment. Macrophotographic data from a coated leading edge model show progressive degradation over several thermal cycles at aerothermal conditions representative of high Mach number flight. The objective of the second experiment is to assess the capability of cooling a porous surface exposed to a high temperature, high velocity flow environment and to provide a heat transfer data base for a design procedure. Experimental results from transpiration cooled surfaces in a supersonic flow environment are presented.

The Gray Needle: Large Grains in the HD 15115 Debris Disk from LBT*/PISCES/K s and LBTIi+/LMIRcam/L(prime) Adaptive Optics Imaging

We present diffraction-limited K s band and L(prime) adaptive optics images of the edge-on debris disk around the nearby F2 star HD 15115, obtained with a single 8.4 m primary mirror at the Large Binocular Telescope. At the Ks band, the disk is detected at signal-to-noise per resolution element (SNRE) approx. 3-8 from approx. 1 to 2".5 (45-113 AU) on the western side and from approx. 1". 2 to 2".1 (63-90 AU) on the east. At L the disk is detected at SNRE approx. 2.5 from approx. 1 to 1".45 (45-90 AU) on both sides, implying more symmetric disk structure at 3.8 micrometers. At both wavelengths the disk has a bow-like shape and is offset from the star to the north by a few AU. A surface brightness asymmetry exists between the two sides of the disk at the Ks band, but not at L(prime). The surface brightness at the K s band declines inside 1"(approx. 45 AU), which may be indicative of a gap in the disk near 1".The K s − L(prime) disk color, after removal of the stellar color, is mostly gray for both sides of the disk. This suggests that scattered light is coming from large dust grains, with 3-10 micrometers sized grains on the east side and 1-10 micrometers dust grains on the west. This may suggest that the west side is composed of smaller dust grains than the east side, which would support the interpretation that the disk is being dynamically affected by interactions with the local interstellar medium.

K3NaTh2O6 is High Pressure (4-7GPa) Tellurium-derived structured and crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent K1+ sites. In the first K1+ site, K1+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted KO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent NaO6 octahedra, corners with four ThO6 octahedra, edges with two equivalent NaO6 octahedra, edges with four ThO6 octahedra, and edges with six equivalent KO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 13–18°. There are two shorter (2.70 Å) and four longer (2.95 Å) K–O bond lengths. In the second K1+ site, K1+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted KO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent NaO6 octahedra, corners with four ThO6 octahedra, edges with two equivalent NaO6 octahedra, edges with four ThO6 octahedra, and edges with six KO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 14–17°. There are a spread of K–O bond distances ranging from 2.76–2.97 Å. Na1+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NaO6 octahedra that share corners with six KO6 octahedra, edges with six KO6 octahedra, and edges with six ThO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 17–18°. There are four shorter (2.64 Å) and two longer (2.65 Å) Na–O bond lengths. There are two inequivalent Th4+ sites. In the first Th4+ site, Th4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form ThO6 octahedra that share corners with six KO6 octahedra, edges with three equivalent NaO6 octahedra, edges with three equivalent ThO6 octahedra, and edges with six KO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 13–14°. There are four shorter (2.35 Å) and two longer (2.36 Å) Th–O bond lengths. In the second Th4+ site, Th4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form ThO6 octahedra that share corners with six KO6 octahedra, edges with three equivalent NaO6 octahedra, edges with three equivalent ThO6 octahedra, and edges with six KO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 13–14°. All Th–O bond lengths are 2.35 Å. There are three inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded to three K1+, one Na1+, and two Th4+ atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing OK3NaTh2 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 0–12°. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded to three K1+, one Na1+, and two Th4+ atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing OK3NaTh2 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 0–12°. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded to three K1+, one Na1+, and two Th4+ atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing OK3NaTh2 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 0–10°.
