Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory

The SAIL (Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory) has been established to provide direct in-line support to the space shuttle program. The SAIL provides a central facility where the avionics and related flight hardware, flight software, and flight procedures will be brought together for integration and verification testing. The basic approach is to utilize qualifiable avionics flight hardware to the greatest extent possible. Where this is not feasible, flight hardware simulators are developed that provide the electrical/electronic termination, stimulation, and signal interface to the flight hardware that it would actually encounter in the shuttle vehicle. This paper discusses the existing laboratory configuration supporting the approach and landing test phase of the shuttle program, the operational experience gained to date, and the design of the laboratory elements to support the orbital flight test phase.

Experimental differential and integral electron impact cross sections for the B /1-Sigma-u +/ state of H2 in the intermediate-energy region

Utilizing a crossed electron-beam-molecular-beam scattering technique, differential electron impact cross sections (DCS) for the excitation of the nu prime = 2 vibrational band of the B (1-Sigma-u +) state of H2 have been measured and are presented for the first time. These measurements were made at electron impact energies of 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 eV. At each energy, DCS between scattering angles of 10 and 135 deg were determined. They were then extrapolated to 0 and 180 deg scattering angles to obtain the integral cross sections. These integral cross sections and the Frank-Condon factor for the nu prime = 2 band were used to calculate the total cross sections for the excitation of the B (1-Sigma-u +).

Boolean differentiation and integration using Karnaugh maps

Algorithms are presented for differentiation and integration of Boolean functions by means of Karnaugh maps. The algorithms are considered simple when the number of variables is six or less; in this case Boolean differentiation and integration is said to be as easy as the Karnaugh map method of simplifying switching functions. It is suggested that the algorithms would be useful in the analysis of faults in combinational systems and in the synthesis of asynchronous sequential systems which utilize edge-sensitive flip-flops.

An integral solution to a nonlinear diffusion problem

The generalized Galerkin method (or the method of integral relations) is applied to the type of problem described by quasilinear parabolic equations. As an example the problem of nonlinear transient slab diffusion with a general reservoir boundary condition is worked out. The integral relations are given for an arbitrary number of strips, and solutions using up to seven strips have been obtained in order to investigate the convergence of the method.

Time-delay-and-integration charge-coupled devices using tin oxide gate technology

Doped tin oxide gates are used in a time-delay-and-integration (TDI) CCD scheme in an effort to develop a stable transparent gate technology. Design characteristics of the system are discussed, including 2 sections of 10 by 9 integration stages, four-phase buried channel construction, and 10 input parallel-in/serial-out output shift register at a video rate of 1.25 MHz. A quantum efficiency of 65% with smooth spectral response is attained by front surface imaging. The suitability of the system for the Landsat program is discussed in terms of TDI-CCD operating parameters.

Integral equation formulation for probe corrected far-field reconstruction from measurements on a cylinder

A method has been developed for far-field evaluation from measurements taken on a cylinder. The antenna and probe fields are represented by superpositions of plane waves, and two integral equations are derived whose functions are the elevation and azimuthal components of the antenna pattern. The known components are the measurements taken by either two probes or a single probe with two geometrical orientations. The convolutional nature of the integral equations makes Fourier analysis techniques applicable to a straightforward solution and an efficient computational procedure. Good agreement has been found between experimental and reconstructed patterns for both nominal and cross polarized field components.

Performance evaluation of integrated guidance and navigation systems

The method of linear covariance analysis is applied to the study of an aerospace vehicle integrated guidance-and-navigation system. This requires that the rms trajectory deviations of the vehicle be computed along with the rms errors of the navigation system. The technique is used to examine the performance of the shuttle orbiter vehicle's guidance-and-navigation system during the terminal phase of the landing. Essentially the same rms trajectory deviations were obtained from a single covariance run as from a 30-sample Monte-Carlo run set. Of particular interest in the study was the result that rms trajectory deviations for the integrated-system were generally significantly larger than the rms navigation errors.

SOFIP: A Short Orbital Flux Integration Program

A computer code was developed to evaluate the space radiation environment encountered by geocentric satellites. The Short Orbital Flux Integration Program (SOFIP) is a compact routine of modular compositions, designed mostly with structured programming techniques in order to provide core and time economy and ease of use. The program in its simplest form produces for a given input trajectory a composite integral orbital spectrum of either protons or electrons. Additional features are available separately or in combination with the inclusion of the corresponding (optional) modules. The code is described in detail, and the function and usage of the various modules are explained. A program listing and sample outputs are attached.

A conceptual design for an integrated data base management system for remote sensing data

The requirements of potential users were considered in the design of an integrated data base management system, developed to be independent of any specific computer or operating system, and to be used to support investigations in weather and climate. Ultimately, the system would expand to include data from the agriculture, hydrology, and related Earth resources disciplines. An overview of the system and its capabilities is presented. Aspects discussed cover the proposed interactive command language; the application program command language; storage and tabular data maintained by the regional data base management system; the handling of data files and the use of system standard formats; various control structures required to support the internal architecture of the system; and the actual system architecture with the various modules needed to implement the system. The concepts on which the relational data model is based; data integrity, consistency, and quality; and provisions for supporting concurrent access to data within the system are covered in the appendices.

Reactor design and integration into a nuclear electric spacecraft

One of the well-defined applications for nuclear power in space is nuclear electric propulsion (NEP). Mission studies have identified the optimum power level (400 kWe). A single Shuttle launch requirement and science-package integration have added additional constraints to the design. A reactor design which will meet these constraints has been studied. The reactor employs 90 fuel elements, each heat pipe cooled. Reactor control is obtained with BeO/B4C drums in a BeO reflector. The balance of the spacecraft is shielded from the reactor with LiH. Power conditioning and reactor control drum drives are located behind the LiH with the power conditioning. Launch safety, mechanical design and integration with the power conversion subsystem are discussed.

Fuel cell on-site integrated energy system parametric analysis of a residential complex

The use of phosphoric acid fuel cell powerplant to provide all the electricity required by an 81-unit garden apartment complex is studied. Byproduct heat is recovered and provides some of the heat required by the complex. The onsite integrated energy system contains energy conversion equipment including combinations of compression and absorption chillers, heat pumps, electric resistance heaters, and thermal storage. The annual fuel requirement for several onsite integrated energy systems as well as the fuel cell breakeven cost for one specific system were calculated. It is found that electrical efficiency cannot be traded off against thermal efficiency without paying a penalty in system efficiency.

Time-delay-and-integration charge coupled devices /CCDs/ applied to the Thematic Mapper

The visible focal plane of the Thematic Mapper, the next generation sensor system for application to earth resource survey, uses complex hybrid assembly techniques to interface silicon photodiodes to JFET preamplifiers. This complexity can be ameliorated by the use of a 20-channel time-delay-and-integration (TDI) CCD with nine stages of integration per channel. By going to a CCD array operating in a TDI mode, over 700 individual op amps can be replaced with only 48 op amps. Smooth spectral response and 70% quantum efficiency have been provided by using doped tin oxide gates over the imaging region.

Airframe-integrated propulsion system for hypersonic cruise vehicles

The paper describes a new hydrogen-burning airframe-integrated scramjet concept which offers good potential for efficient hypersonic cruise vehicles. The characteristics of the engine which assure good performance are extensive engine-airframe integration, fixed geometry, low cooling, and control of heat release in the supersonic combustor by mixed modes of fuel injection from the combustor entrance. The present paper describes the concept and presents results from inlet tests, direct-connect combustor tests, and tests of two subscale boiler-plate research engines currently underway under conditions which simulate flight at Mach 4 and 7. It is concluded that this engine concept has the potential for high thrust and efficiency, low drag and weight, low cooling requirement, and application to a wide range of vehicle sizes.

The application of the least squares finite element method to Abel's integral equation

Abel's integral equation is the governing equation for certain problems in physics and engineering, such as radiation from distributed sources. The finite element method for the solution of this non-linear equation is presented for problems with cylindrical symmetry and the extension to more general integral equations is indicated. The technique was applied to an axisymmetric glow discharge problem and the results show excellent agreement with previously obtained solutions
