Cyber Physical Grid-Interactive Distributed Energy Resources Control for VPP Dispatch and Regulation: Preprint

This paper presents a cyber-physical algorithm for grid interactive DER control to enable two features of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) dispatch and grid voltage regulation, considering the communication and security impacts. We first formulate the DER dispatch problem as a real-time, iterative, and grid-interactive DER control problem. Thereafter, we consider a probabilistic traffic model to characterize packet delays and loss in a communication network, and study how the delays enter the process of information exchange among the grid measurement units, local DER controllers and the grid control center that coordinately execute this dispatch algorithm. Finally, we propose a cyber-physical grid-interactive DER control algorithm using the previous message strategy. The tracking and regulation capabilities of this proposed algorithm can be made immune to the asynchrony resulting from the communications network traffic. We carry out simulations to show possible numerical instabilities and sensitivities of the tracking and regulation capabilities on the proposed strategy. Our results exhibit that the uncertainties of the underlying communications infrastructure must be considered in the control algorithm for the VPP tracking and regulation capabilities of any DER in a generic Cyber-Physical System (CPS).

Performance Evaluation of Peer-to-Peer Distributed Microgrids Coordination for Voltage Regulation: Preprint

This paper presents the performance evaluation of a peer-to-peer microgrids coordination algorithm for sub-transmission systems. As distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution system start to show negative impact to the bulk power system, a paradigm shift is needed for transmission planning and operation. Because distribution substations are located far from the sub-transmission system, and it is hard to use traditional centralized control for real-time control and coordination. Thus, distributed control is a natural choice because it requires less communication and central computation. In this paper, each distribution substation is treated as a microgrid, and the peer-to-peer distributed microgrids control is formulated as a real-time optimal power flow problem to reduce the negative impact in sub-transmission systems. A distributed primal-dual optimization algorithm is adopted to solve the problem. Validation of the peer-to-peer algorithm is performed through the simulation of a real-world sub-transmission system composing of many distribution systems with high renewable penetration. Simulation results show that the peer-to-peer algorithm can achieve satisfactory performance (e.g., voltage regulation) in sub-transmission system by coordinating and controlling DERs in distribution systems.

Influence of Irradiation-induced Microstructural Defects on Thermal Transport in Single Crystal Thorium Dioxide

Microstructural defects formed as a result of fission fragment damage are known to drastically alter thermal conductivity, a fuel property that governs the efficiency of a nuclear reactor. A fundamental understanding of radiation-induced effects on thermal transport is critical for the development of advanced fuels. Ion-irradiation has widely been used to simulate the effects of neutron-irradiation by seeding atomic-to-nanoscale defects of controllable size and density. In this work, we investigate the influence of microstructural defects, induced by ion-irradiation, on the thermal properties of single crystal thorium dioxide samples grown using the hydrothermal technique. The samples were irradiated using 2 MeV protons at room temperature. A laser-based modulated thermoreflectance technique was used to measure the thermal diffusivity and conductivity within the damaged ThO2 region. The experimentally measured thermal properties were compared with Boltzmann Transport Equation predictions, to determine the impact of various defect types on the thermal properties of ThO2.

Detecting Axion Dark Matter with Black Hole Polarimetry

The axion, as a leading dark matter candidate, is the target of many on-going and proposed experimental searches based on its coupling to photons. Ultralight axions that couple to photons can also cause polarization rotation of light which can be probed by cosmic microwave background. In this work, we show that a large axion field is inevitably developed around black holes due to the Bose-Einstein condensation of axions, enhancing the induced birefringence effects. Therefore, we propose measuring the modulation of supermassive black hole imaging polarization angles as a new probe to the axion-photon coupling of axion dark matter. The oscillating axion field around black holes induces polarization rotation on the black hole image, which is detectable and distinguishable from astrophysical effects on the polarization angle, as it exhibits distinctive temporal variability and frequency invariability. We present the range of axion-photon couplings within the axion mass range $10^{-21}-10^{-16}\text{eV}$ that can be probed by the Event Horizon Telescope. The axion parameter space probed by black hole polarimetry will expand with the improvement in sensitivity on the polarization measurement and more black hole polarimetry targets with determined black hole masses.

Status Report on the Development of Cladding Inner-wall and Outer-wall Coatings

Advanced cladding is critical for nuclear reactors with enhanced performance in radiation tolerance, neutron transparency and reactor safety. Using advanced cladding will ensure the adequate thermal conductivity and mechanical stability of the cladding base material, corrosion resistance and high-temperature coolant compatibility of the cladding surface, and chemical stability in the cladding inner wall against fuel cladding chemical interaction (FCCI). An innovative cladding with a three-layer structure (i.e., a modified outer surface, a robust clad base material, and a modified inner wall) promises to meet all these requirements. In this status report, the initial efforts on the development of cladding inner-wall and outer-wall coatings are summarized. The activities covered in this report are (1) High-resolution TEM studies of TiN/HT-9 interface atomic structure and chemistry after ion irradiation, (2) High-resolution TEM studies of TiN/14YWT ODS interface atomic structure after thermal cycling, (3) Inner-wall TiN coating for an experimental 14YWT ODS cladding, and (4) Corrosion test of TiN coated Ziracloy-4 bar samples.

Nonlinear Information from DESI Luminous Red Galaxies: An Emulator-Based Analysis of Pre- and Post-Reconstruction Power Spectra

We present joint measurements of the pre- and post-reconstruction power spectra, $P_{\rm pre}$ and $P_{\rm post}$, together with their cross-power spectrum, $P_{\rm cross}$, for the Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the DESI Data Release 1 (DR1). We jointly analyse these observables with an emulator-based full-shape modeling framework, thereby, for the first time, we extract complementary nonlinear information from the galaxy density field before and after reconstruction in real survey data. Specifically, including $P_{\rm post}$ and $P_{\rm cross}$ in addition to $P_{\rm pre}$ (hereafter $P_{\rm all}$) yields an improvement of approximately $18$-$27\%$ in the $σ_8$ constraint in both $Λ$CDM and $w$CDM, depending on the redshift bin, relative to the $P_{\rm pre}$-only analysis with the cosmic microwave background distance priors (hereafter CMB). In $w$CDM, the joint CMB+$P_{\rm all}$ analysis can tighten the constraints on $w$ by approximately $5$-$15\%$ across the two LRG redshift bins, compared to the CMB+$P_{\rm pre}$ combination. Further incorporating the Type Ia supernova dataset and comparing the cosmological constraints in $w$CDM from each individual power-spectrum component with those from the full combination, we find that $P_{\rm all}$ consistently provides the tightest constraints. From the joint CMB+$P_{\rm all}$+DES-Dovekie dataset, we obtain $Ω_m = 0.314 \pm 0.0048$ and $w = -0.988 \pm 0.023$ for the \texttt{LRG1} sample, and $Ω_m = 0.318 \pm 0.0046$ and $w = -0.988 \pm 0.025$ for \texttt{LRG2}. These results demonstrate that combining pre- and post-reconstruction power spectra with their cross-correlation enables DESI to harvest additional nonlinear information, leading to tighter constraints on cosmological parameters.
