Updates on the Wake Potential Calculations for the Electron-ion Collider with ECHO3D

ECHO3D has been used for calculating the geometric impedance and short-range wakefields for several EIC (Electron-Ion Collider) beamline vacuum components in the past few years. This note summarizes the wake potential calculations conducted in 2023 with ECHO3D for components from both the hadron storage ring (HSR) and the electron storage ring (ESR). For the HSR, calculations have been carried out for the polarimeter, the beam screen with pump slots and the bellow with pump ports. For the ESR, the short-range wake potential for the flange weld as well as various designs of the storage ring cavity have been calculated.

Towards Development of a Conceptual Model for Mercury in Bear Creek, Oak Ridge, Tennessee (FY23 Update)

Mercury concentrations in fish in Bear Creek are elevated and comparable to concentrations seen in fish in East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC) on the Oak Ridge Reservation, even though aqueous inorganic mercury concentrations are orders of magnitude lower in Bear Creek than in EFPC. Acknowledging that the relationship between aqueous and fish tissue mercury concentrations is not linear, and that methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations are likely more related to fish tissue concentrations than aqueous total mercury (Hg T ) concentrations, MeHg production is not easily predicted or controlled. In Bear Creek, where aqueous Hg T concentrations are low, factors other than mercury loading drive the transformation of mercury to MeHg and subsequent trophic transfer to fish. Initial development of a waste disposal facility (Environmental Management Disposal Facility; EMDF) in Bear Creek Valley has begun, and operation of the EMDF has the potential to increase mercury inputs to Bear Creek. Consequently, understanding the factors contributing to elevated MeHg concentrations in water and fish in Bear Creek has increased relevance and importance. This report summarizes data from recent and historical compliance and investigatory studies with an eye toward building a conceptual model to understand the processes affecting mercury transport and transformation in the Bear Creek watershed, as well as to highlight key knowledge gaps in our understanding of these processes that warrant further investigation. The conceptual model will provide a strong technical basis for prioritizing and optimizing potential mitigation actions or best management practices to minimize potential negative effects of the EMDF related to mercury in Bear Creek.

Project Update for “Designing Nuclear-data Measurements that Resolve Discrepancies in Existing Data” [Slides]

AIACHNE has made key progress this past year and will contribute to the larger scientific community. We recovered input data for the current 252 Cf(sf) PFNS evaluation that was previously lost. We render a standard to the best of our ability reproducible. We critically reviewed past data as input for ML & new standard evaluation that will impact PFNS of all major actinides. We developed a unique AI/ ML code that highlights which measurement features are related to bias and are working towards open-sourcing it for the community. Features that were identified as related to bias follow physics’ intuition and bring new understanding of exp effects and might help us for other reactions and isotopes. The results highlight that EXFOR is a goldmine of features that could help us understand experiment bias (if they are easy to parse).

MG-RAVENS: Working Group Update [Slides]

Problem Statement: Users in industry, who are planning the deployment and operation of microgrids, face a multi-domain problem that requires multiple engineering tools to solve; Existing tools lack interoperability, which requires tedious recreation and conversion of equipment models, and creates opportunities for errors in translation or through inconsistent assumptions; Microgrid modelers waste time reinventing the wheel because it is challenging to reuse existing distribution, load, generation, power flow, optimization models for new use cases.

238 U PFNS Evaluation Update [Slides]

Experimental 238 U PFNS were reviewed in detail including Chi-Nu PFNS. 7/10 data sets have been accepted. We have performed a detailed UQ using LANL code ARIADNE and templates of expected PFNS measurement uncertainties. we have included Chi-Nu PFNS in experimental data base. The extended Los Alamos model in CoH was used for prior calculation. Multiple chance fission and pre-equilibrium (with exciton model) contributions were modeled.

2024 Capability Review Update [Slides]

LANL appears competitive with peer NNSA labs, below most DOE Science labs, but trending down - why? Publication rates or counts are an indicator of productivity. Field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) is an indicator of impact.

LANL Meteorological Program Self-Assessment 2023 Update

The DOE Meteorological Coordinating Council (DMCC) conducted an initial LANL Meteorological (Met) Program Assist Visit in August 2006, and several observations and recommendations were shared with LANL management (DMCC 2006). In August 2015, a follow-up Met Program Assist Visit was conducted to determine progress in meeting all the observations and recommendations from the prior Assist Visit (DMCC 2015). During the 9 years between these two Assist Visits, DMCC noted that significant program improvements were made, and these were documented in the 2015 Assist Visit observations and recommendations. Based on current discussions with the Met Program, additional significant improvements have been made and will be discussed as part of this self-assessment.

2023 FORCE Development Status Update

Technical and economic analysis of integrated energy systems (IES) using software models is a complex process requiring multiple commodity market decision analysis, optimal control, process modeling, and stochastic analysis. Many assumptions used in traditional energy analysis tools do not hold in future energy markets with significant storage and variable renewable energy sources (VRE), let alone with multiple commodity markets. Capturing these intricate elements for accurate techno-economic analysis of IES led to the development of the Framework for Optimization of ResourCes and Economics (FORCE) tool suite under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Integrated Energy Systems crosscutting technology program. With the aim of a full framework release in 2025, many improvements to the FORCE tool suite were developed in fiscal year 2023 (FY23). These improvements broadly fit into three focuses for development of FORCE: capability, accessibility, and reliability. Capability refers to the ability of FORCE to accurately model the technical and economic viability of various IES. Accessibility refers to ease-of-use for new and existing IES analysts to efficiently set up, analyze, and produce results using FORCE. Reliability refers to the consistency of the software, allowing consistency to analysis regardless of erstwhile changes to the software. In addition to many smaller changes, there are three major capability improvements in FORCE in FY23. In summary, FORCE developments in FY23 have moved us close to all the capability requirements for FORCE 1.0 to be delivered in FY25. Inclusion of Bayesian optimization, resilience metrics, and levelized cost analysis expand the capability, accessibility, and reliability of FORCE.

Update On Meson Structure Studies at Jefferson Lab Hall C

The development of the GPD formalism in the last 25 years has been a groundbreaking advance in our understanding of the structure of the nucleon. Unifying the concepts of parton distributions and of hadronic form factors, GPDs contain a wealth of new information about how quarks and gluons make up hadrons. For example, GPDs correlate different parton configurations within the hadron at the quantum mechanical level. A recent theorem allows the reaction amplitude to be factorized into a hard part, representing the interaction of the incident virtual photon probe with the parton, and a soft part, containing the GPD and, representing the response of the nucleon to this interaction. Importantly this factorization relies on several assumptions that may not be true at low four momentum transfer squared (Q^2) for meson production. The main assumption is that the cross section will depend on Q^-6. This presentation will give the projected results of the recently completed Pion-LT experiment fro
