Using MLIR Framework for Codesign of ML Architectures Algorithms and Simulation Tools

MLIR (Multi-Level Intermediate Representation), is an extensible compiler framework that supports high-level data structures and operation constructs. These higher-level code representations are particularly applicable to the artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) domain, allowing developers to more easily support upcoming heterogeneous AI/ML accelerators and develop flexible domain specific compilers/frameworks with higher-level intermediate representations (IRs) and advanced compiler optimizations. The result of using MLIR within the LLVM compiler framework is expected to yield significant improvement in the quality of generated machine code, which in turn will result in improved performance and hardware efficiency

Investigation of Cold Spray as a Dry Storage Canister Repair and Mitigation Tool

The lack of a permanent spent nuclear fuel repository means utilities are faced with extending licenses for dry cask storage systems (DCSS) canisters far beyond their original 20-year license period. DCSS canisters are made from austenitic stainless steels (SSs) and fabricated using fusion welds. High heat input and melting associated with fabrication welds causes material around the weld to be susceptible to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC). The purpose of the work reported here is to investigate the use of cold spray for repair and mitigation of CISCC in DCSS canisters to ensure integrity far beyond their original license period. This report presents an analysis of cold spray for canister life extension, a summary of related efforts, relevant technology down selections, work accomplished, and future efforts relative to use of cold spray for repair and mitigation of CISCC in DCSS canisters.

Review of Intrusion Detection Methods and Tools for Distributed Energy Resources

Recent trends in the growth of distributed energy resources (DER) in the electric grid and newfound malware frameworks that target internet of things (IoT) devices is driving an urgent need for more reliable and effective methods for intrusion detection and prevention. Cybersecurity intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are responsible for detecting threats by monitoring and analyzing network data, which can originate either from networking equipment or end-devices. Creating intrusion detection systems for PV/DER networks is a challenging undertaking because of the diversity of the attack types and intermittency and variability in the data. Distinguishing malicious events from other sources of anomalies or system faults is particularly difficult. New approaches are needed that not only sense anomalies in the power system but also determine causational factors for the detected events. In this report, a range of IDS approaches were summarized along with their pros and cons. Using the review of IDS approaches and subsequent gap analysis for application to DER systems, a preliminary hybrid IDS approach to protect PV/DER communications is formed in the conclusion of this report to inform ongoing and future research regarding the cybersecurity and resilience enhancement of DER systems.

FAIR data infrastructure and tools for AI-assisted streamflow prediction

Focal Area(s) Areas: We discuss how the integration of AI into Earth Science models can impact streamflow predictions at both the science and data levels. Doing so, we address cross-cutting needs related to the goal of making data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable [1]) for seamless use with Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) in Earth System Science at DOE. A novel idea is that AI/ML itself can help with the FAIR data goal and address issues in targeted areas e.g. missing data, data quality and reduction. In addition, the interpretability of results obtained with new AI methods is poised to impact broader scientific challenges in hydrology..

Methods for Representing Flexible, Energy-Constrained Technologies in Utility Planning Tools

Capacity expansion models are widely used by power system researchers, planners, and policy analysts to evaluate alternative power system investment scenarios. With the increasing deployment of wind and solar in the US, there has been much focus on improving the representations of variable generation (VG) technologies within capacity expansion models. Models that capture the variable net-load profiles and larger reserve requirements associated with high penetration VG systems represent an improvement to classic capacity expansion models, but fall short of capturing the complexities associated with storage technologies, such as battery energy storage (BES) and concentrating solar power with thermal energy storage (CSP with TES). While difficult to model in a capacity expansion setting, these technologies are potentially competitive sources of flexibility with the intriguing characteristics of being able to absorb VG that would otherwise be curtailed and directly contribute to renewable energy goals, respectively. In this paper we present methods for accurately representing these technologies in a large-scale capacity expansion model with high electrical and geospatial resolution. VG modeling techniques, including novel methods for capturing curtailment due to unit commitment and other hourly dispatch phenomena, are also reviewed. Modeling for a region in the southwestern United States demonstrates the economic relevance of being able to explicitly trade off the costs and capabilities of energy-constrained technologies, especially BES, against other resources in the near-term, in time to make plans for the coming decade

Lightweight Materials - Carbon Fiber and Polymer Composites, Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) Predictive Tools Development for Low-Cost Carbon Fiber for Lightweight Vehicles (University of Virginia) (Final Report)

This project aimed to develop low-cost alternative precursors and processing techniques through the implementation of an integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) framework to evaluate precursor conversion kinetics. Once established, this framework was then used to down-select precursors for laboratory- and pilot-scale production to validate resulting carbon fiber (CF) material properties and process cost-savings. The two most promising approaches to reduce the cost of CFs were to (1) use new low-cost precursors and (2) reduce the energy requirements of CF processing. These approaches were investigated over the course of three phases of work, spanning 3.5 years. This report describes the overall project objectives, approach, and the key accomplishments in each phase.

Reliability and Power Degradation Rates of PERC Modules Using Differentiated Packaging Strategies and Characterization Tools

The reliability, durability and lifetime performance of passivated emitter, rear cell (PERC) modules used in real-world PV power plants is a critical challenge underlying the rapid adoption and bankability of these PERC cells, whose high efficiency help reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). We propose a degradation-science study of PERC module degradation pathways, benchmarking them relative to known degradation mechanisms and pathways of the incumbent aluminum back surface field (Al-BSF) modules exposed to real-world and accelerated exposure conditions.

Using Tau Leptons as a Tool for Studying the Higgs in the SM and Beyond

In the Standard Model, the mass generation of fermions is achieved through the Higgs Yukawa coupling. There exists several more fundamental theories, such as super- symmetry, that could imply deviations of the couplings of the observed Higgs boson to down-type fermions, such as the τ lepton. Therefore, it is necessary to demonstrate the direct coupling of the Higgs boson to the fundamental fermions and to demonstrate the proportionality of the Higgs boson coupling strength to their mass. Furthermore, any deviations from Standard Model expectation could hint at beyond the Standard Model physics. We summarize a measurement of Higgs to Tau leptons at CMS using a simplified template cross section scheme as well as a differential measurement as a function of Higgs transverse momentum, leading jet transverse momentum and the number of jets present in the event. We also summarize recent calorimeter trigger related activities which will help to improve Higgs to fermion measurements in the future runs at the LHC.

Wabash CarbonSAFE (Subtask 3.1 - Application of the NRAP Tools to the Wabash CarbonSAFE Site for Risk Assessment Associated with Geologic Carbon Storage Activities)

This report documents a risk assessment of CO 2 containment loss and induced shear failure due to geologic carbon storage at the Wabash CarbonSAFE site. The operator, Wabash Valley Resources, has proposed adapting the onsite integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) facilities to produce hydrogen and injecting the byproduct CO 2 stream into the subsurface Potosi dolomite formation. The purpose of this study is to assess (1) CO 2 sequestration performance relative to the CarbonSAFE goals of storing 50 Mt over 30 years, (2) the risk of containment loss due to leakage along a wellbore and into an overlying aquifer, and (3) the state of stress and risk of reactivating existing fractures. This study relied upon the initial site characterization work performed by the Illinois State Geologic Survey (ISGS) along with analogue data collected from other carbon sequestration projects in the region.
