Mission Operations Center for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Space Science & Security Program

Space mission operations has grown in line with the development of new space and ground technology. Originally, the philosophy for a space mission was to keep the spacecraft as simple as possible and have as much of the mission complexity on the ground where engineers can fix, control and access things. This was mostly due to immature space technologies and associated risk, as well as cost to develop complex and capable ground stations was relatively cheaper than complex space missions. This led to large room withs multiple computers and an army of engineers and operators sitting at computers and monitoring specific spacecraft information during operations. With development of new space technologies, a lot of functions that were kept and constantly monitored on the ground have been automated and completely integrated into the spacecraft, reducing the number of operators and engineers needed to operate a mission. With the paradigm shift in increasing spacecraft technologies, improved computer technologies, and scaling down space mission size; the mission operations centers have also adapted to changes. More organizations are becoming space-faring institutions and have developed mission operations centers for their unique missions.

Higher Algebraic Structures in Holography

The project on higher algebraic structures in algebra & holography showed that a mathematical subject called Koszul duality, which relates two kinds of algebraic structures to one another, can be understood as part of the famous holographic correspondence. It used a variation of these methods, further incorporating Penrose's twistor space, to equate the computation of certain four-dimensional amplitudes and form factors to correlation functions in a chiral algebra constructed from Koszul duality.

Investigation of SF6 Alternatives in Spark Gap Switches for GWP Reduction

This primary purpose of this project was to evaluate alternative gas mixtures to sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) developed for high voltage power delivery applications for use in high voltage spark gap switches. These SF6 alternatives lower global warming potential emissions and enable improvements to the pressure-voltage design space. A combined experimental, computational, and theoretical study was used to quantify the impact of persistent breakdown products on the breakdown distribution of SF6-replacement gas mixtures. Viable SF6 replacements suitable for use in spark gap switches were studied to enable performance and agility improvements for next-generation pulsed power research relevant to national security missions. Experimental campaign included establishing parameters of switch gases as function of concentration. Various concentrations and pressures were tested for trends in breakdown voltage, repeatability, and durability, and breakdown constituents. A zero-dimensional plasma global model was used to simulate the plasma arc decay and recombination process in spark-gap switches relevant to the Z machine. Finally, a complete and consistent set of electron-neutral collision cross-sections for the novel insulating gas C4F7N is reported.

Multi-species collisions for delta-f gyrokinetic simulations: Implementation and verification with GENE

A multi-species linearized collision operator based on the model developed by Sugama et al. has been implemented in the nonlinear gyrokinetic code, GENE. Such a model conserves particles, momentum, and energy to machine precision, and is shown to have negative definite free energy dissipation characteristics, satisfying Boltzmann’s H-theorem, including for realistic mass ratio. Finite Larmor Radius (FLR) effects have also been implemented into the local version of the code. For the global version of the code, the collision operator has been developed to allow for block-structured velocity space grids, allowing for computationally tractable collisional global simulations. The validity of the collision operator has been demonstrated by relaxation and conservation tests, as well as appropriate benchmarks. The newly implemented operator shall be used in future simulations to study magnetically confined fusion plasma turbulence and transport in more extreme regions with higher collisionality.
