Development of powder metallurgy 2XXX series Al alloy plate and sheet materials for high temperature aircraft structural applications, FY 1983/1984

The objective of this investigation is to fabricate and evaluate PM 2124 Al alloy plate and sheet materials according to NASA program goals for damage tolerance and fatigue resistance. Previous research has indicated the outstanding strength-toughness relationship available with PM 2124 Al-Zr modified alloy compositions in extruded product forms. The range of processing conditions was explored in the fabrication of plate and sheet gage materials, as well as the resultant mechanical and metallurgical properties. The PM composition based on Al-3.70 Cu-1.85 Mg-0.20 Mn with 0.60 wt. pct. Zr was selected. Flat rolled material consisting of 0.250 in. thick plate was fabricated using selected thermal mechanical treatments (TMT). The schedule of TMT operations was designed to yield the extreme conditions of grain structure normally encountered in the fabrication of flat rolled products, specifically recrystallized and unrecrystallized. The PM Al alloy plate and sheet materials exhibited improved strength properties at thin gages compared to IM Al alloys, as a consequence of their enhanced ability to inhibit recrystallization and grain growth. In addition, the PM 2124 Al alloys offer much better combinations of strength and toughnessover equivalent IM Al. The alloy microstructures were examined by optical metallographic texture techniques in order to establish the metallurgical basis for these significant property improvements.

Advanced powder metallurgy aluminum alloys via rapid solidification technology, phase 2

Marko's rapid solidification technology was applied to processing high strength aluminum alloys. Four classes of alloys, namely, Al-Li based (class 1), 2124 type (class 2), high temperature Al-Fe-Mo (class 3), and PM X7091 type (class 4) alloy, were produced as melt-spun ribbons. The ribbons were pulverized, cold compacted, hot-degassed, and consolidated through single or double stage extrusion. The mechanical properties of all four classes of alloys were measured at room and elevated temperatures and their microstructures were investigated optically and through electron microscopy. The microstructure of class 1 Al-Li-Mg alloy was predominantly unrecrystallized due to Zr addition. Yield strengths to the order of 50 Ksi were obtained, but tensile elongation in most cases remained below 2 percent. The class 2 alloys were modified composition of 2124 aluminum alloy, through addition of 0.6 weight percent Zr and 1 weight percent Ni. Nickel addition gave rise to a fine dispersion of intermetallic particles resisting coarsening during elevated temperature exposure. The class 2 alloy showed good combination of tensile strength and ductility and retained high strength after 1000 hour exposure at 177 C. The class 3 Al-Fe-Mo alloy showed high strength and good ductility both at room and high temperatures. The yield and tensile strength of class 4 alloy exceeded those of the commercial 7075 aluminum alloy.

Room temperature tensile ductility in powder processed B2 FeAl alloys

It has been shown that it is possible to obtain significant room temperature tensile ductility in FeAl alloys using iron-rich deviations from stoichiometry. A comparison of the room temperature tensile and compressive behaviors of Fe-50 at. pct Al and Fe-40 at. pct Al shows that FeAl is brittle at higher Al contents because it fractures along grain boundaries before general yielding. Lower aluminum contents reduce the yield stress substantially and hence some ductility is observed before fracture. Addition of boron results in measurable improvements in ductility of Fe-40 at. pct Al and is accompanied by an increase in transgranular tearing on the fracture surface, suggesting a grain boundary strengthening mechanism. Increasing the cooling rate following annealing at 1273 K results in a large increase in the yield strength and a corresponding decrease in ductility.

Advantages of barium peroxide in the powder synthesis of perovskite superconductors

This paper compares reaction chemistry, material processing, and material characteristics for the solid state reaction using BaCO3 or BaO2 in the synthesis of perovskite superconductors. Results are presented for weight loss and X-ray diffraction, sample morphology and homogeneity as monitored by SEM and EDS, and the superconductivity critical temperature and ac susceptibility. Greater mass density, increased sample homogeneity, lower resistance, and improved reproducibility for material are found when BaO32 is used.

Characterization of a semicrystalline polyimidesulfone powder

A semicrystalline polyimidesulfone (PISO2) material has been synthesized and characterized. Characterization methods include thermal analysis by DSC and measurements of inherent viscosities, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and viscoelasticity. The melt flow properties of both amorphous and semicrystalline samples were also investigated by means of a parallel plate plastometer. This material was found to be not readily recrystallizable at temperatures above its initial peak melting point of 225 C, when compared to other crystalline thermoplastics. This semicrystalline PISO2 demonstrated a flow about 5 times greater than the amorphous one as characterized by the plastometer. Such enhanced melt flow properties could be of great benefit in the adhesive and composite lamination processes.

Characterization of ZrO2-Y2O3 thermal spray powder systems

The overall objective is to establish the interrelation between the raw material in the coating process and the performance of the coating deposit. It is anticipated that these interrelations will help establish more precise specifications for the procurement of the raw materials. Some of the preliminary results of the program are presented.

Stress corrosion evaluation of powder metallurgy aluminum alloy 7091 with the breaking load test method

The stress corrosion behavior of the P/M aluminum alloy 7091 is evaluated in two overaged heat treatment conditions, T7E69 and T7E70, using an accelerated test technique known as the breaking load test method. The breaking load data obtained in this study indicate that P/M 7091 alloy is highly resistant to stress corrosion in both longitudinal and transverse orientations at stress levels up to 90 percent of the material yield strength. The reduction in mean breaking stress as a result of corrosive attack is smallest for the more overaged T7E70 condition. Details of the test procedure are included.

Agglomeration of ceramic powders

A research program directed at a critical comparison of numerical models for power agglomeration with experimental observations is currently underway. Central to this program is the quantitative characterization of the distribution of mass within an agglomerate as a function of time. Current experiments are designed to restrict agglomeration to a surface, which is oriented perpendicular to the force of gravity. These experiments are discussed with reference to: their significance to ceramic processing; artifacts which may be avoided in microgravity experiments; and the comparison of information available in real space (from optical microscopy) to that in reciprocal space (from light scattering). The principle machine requirement appears to be a need to obtain information at small scattering angles.

Characterization of LaRC-TPI 1500 powders - A new version with controlled molecular weight

The crystallization behavior and the melt flow properties of two batches of 1500 series LaRC-TPI polymers have been investigated. The characterization methods include DSC, XRD, and melt rheology. The as-received materials posses initial crystalline melting peak temperatures of 295 and 305 C, respectively. These materials are less readily recrystallizable at elevated temperatures when compared to other semicrystalline thermoplastics. For the samples annealed at temperatures below 330 C, a semicrystalline polymer can be obtained. On the other hand, a purely amorphous structure is realized in samples annealed at temperatures above 330 C. The viscoelastic properties at elevated temperatures below and above T(g)s of the polymers were measured. Information with regard to the molecule sizes and distributions in these polymers were also extracted from melt rheology.

Plasma gun with coaxial powder feed and adjustable cathode

An improved plasma gun coaxially injects particles of ceramic materials having high melting temperatures into the central portion of a plasma jet. This results in a more uniform and higher temperature and velocity distribution of the sprayed particles. The position of the cathode is adjustable to facilitate optimization of the performance of the gun wherein grains of the ceramic material are melted at lower power input levels.

Synthesis of Y1BaCu3O(x) superconducting powders by intermediate phase reactions

A procedure for synthesizing Y1Ba2Cu3O(x) by solid state reactions was developed. The method is based on the use of barium compounds, previously synthesized, as intermediate phases for the process. The reaction kinetics of this procedure were established between 860 C and 920 C. The crystal structure and the presence of second phases were studied by means of XRD. The sintering behavior and ceramic parameters were also determined. The orthorhombic type-I structure was obtained on the synthesized bodies after a cooling cycle in an air atmosphere. Superconducting transition took place at 91 K. Sintering densities higher than 95 percent D sub th were attained at temperatures below 940 C.

Grain orientation in high Tc superconductors by molten salt powder synthesis

The molten salt or the flux method is used to fabricate a grain oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (123) superconductor. Here we suggest a two-stage approach in using the 'green phase', Y2BaCuO5 (211), as seed crystals in the formation of YBa2Cu3O(7-x). The process uses Y2BaCuO5 formed by molten salt synthesis. The Y2BaCuO5 phase was observed to be stable in water and in most of the salt systems. Salt processing can form a small quantity of anisotropic particles of Y2BaCuO5. This material can form the 123 phase when tape cast and sintered in the presence of the required levels of Ba and Cu.

The role of volume scattering in reducing spectral contrast of reststrahlen bands in spectra of powdered minerals

The first high-resolution quantitative directional hemispherical reflectance spectra of minerals were obtained for different particle sizes, and were used to develop an accurate prediction of the particles' spectral emissivity, using Kirchhoff's law (Nicodemus, 1965) and to interpret the nature and causes of changes in the spectral contrast of reststrahlen bands. It was found that the reststrahlen bands change in shape as well as intensity; this is explained by the occurrence of substantial volume scattering at fine particle sizes. The implication of this finding for remote sensing of the earth, moon, Mercury, Mars, and the asteroids is discussed.

Thermoelectric properties of hot-pressed fine particulate powder SiGe alloys

A novel material system and its fabrication technique have been defined and applied to the production of SiGe thermoelectric material through the hot pressing of 50-100 A ultrafine particulates into 80/20 SiGe. Relative to conventionally processed SiGe, a reduction of thermal conductivity of up to 40 percent is achieved in conjunction with an enhancement of material figure-of-merit of the order of 10-15 percent.
