The Outer Planets: Getting There Fast

In this paper, a brief review is given of NASA's outer planet missions as performed with chemical propulsion systems. The Kuiper Express is discussed as an illustration of the integrated approach that should be used in mission and spacecraft design to maximize science return.

Fast Optical Hazard Detection for Planetary Rovers Using Multiple Spot Laser Triangulation

A new laser-based optical sensor system that provides hazard detection for planetary rovers is presented. It is anticipated that the sensor can support safe travel at speeds up to 6cm/second for large (1m) rovers in full sunlight on Earth or Mars. The system overcomes limitations in an older design that require image differencing ot detect a laser stripe in full sun.

Finest Filamentary Structures of the Corona in the Slow and Fast Solar Wind

Recent progress in our understanding of electron density fluctuations observed by radio occultation measurements has demonstrated that a break in the vicinity of 1 Hz in the temporal frequency spectrum of the density fluctuations provides a measure of the size of the finest filamentary structures in the solar corona.

Features Observed in the Trailing Regions of Interplanetary Clouds for Fast Coronal Mass Ejections

ISEE-3 and Ulysses plasma and magnetic field data are used to study features in the trailing regions of interplanetary plasma clouds resulting from coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Approximately one quarter of those events contain periods greater or equal to 6 hours for which the interplanetary magnetic field is quiet and nearly radial. Arguments are presented that this is a causal relation, rather than coincidence.

Fast Spatio-Temporal Data Mining from Large Geophysical Datasets

Use of the UCLA CONQUEST (CONtent-based Querying in Space and Time) is reviewed for performance of automatic cyclone extraction and detection of spatio-temporal blocking conditions on MPP. CONQUEST is a data analysis environment for knowledge and data mining to aid in high-resolution modeling of climate modeling.

Miniatue Propulsion Components for the Pluto Fast Flyby Spacecraft

Pluto is the only planet in our solar system not yet visited by our spacecraft. Recent observations through the Hubble Space Telescope have given us a glimpse of Pluto and it's moon Charon, but their small size and immense distance from earth have preserved their mystery.
