Real-Time Regional PV Spinning Reserve Estimator with AGC Look-Ahead Windows

Curtailed PV generation is a zero-marginal cost spinning reserve that can be used for a number of active power control services. However, unlike the traditional spinning reserve providers, i.e., fossil-fueled generators, who have well-defined operating characteristics, e.g., available headroom or potential high limit (PHL), PV plants have by nature variable and uncertain operating characteristics. To ensure the effective coordination between PV plants and the system operator during an active power control event, accurate forecasts of the PV PHL are essential. A novel reference-control grouping based scaling method has been proposed by NREL to estimate the PV PHL in real-time. This work further enhances the methodology by: 1) improving the model accuracy through machine learning; 2) considering look-ahead windows introduced by the computation and communication latencies; 3) applying the method to regional spinning reserve estimation. A significant performance improvement, over 99% of estimation error reduction, has been observed based on real-world data collected by CAISO and PV plant operators.

An Online Joint Optimization–Estimation Architecture for Distribution Networks

Here in this article, we propose an optimal joint optimization-estimation architecture for distribution networks, which jointly solves the optimal power flow (OPF) problem and static state estimation (SE) problem through an online gradient-based feedback algorithm. The main objective is to enable a fast and timely interaction between the OPF decisions and state estimators with limited sensor measurements. First, convergence and optimality of the proposed algorithm are analytically established. Then, the proposed gradient-based algorithm is modified by introducing statistical information of the inherent estimation and linearization errors for an improved and robust performance of the online OPF decisions. Overall, the proposed method eliminates the traditional separation of operation and monitoring, where optimization and estimation usually operate at distinct layers and different time scales. Hence, it enables a computationally affordable, efficient, and robust online operational framework for distribution networks under time-varying settings.

CaliQEC: In-situ Qubit Calibration for Surface Code Quantum Error Correction

Quantum Error Correction (QEC) is essential for fault-tolerant, large-scale quantum computation. However, error drift in qubits undermines QEC performance during long computations, necessitating frequent calibration. Conventional calibration methods disrupt quantum states, requiring system downtime and rendering in situ calibration impractical. To address this challenge, we propose QECali, a novel framework that enables in situ calibration for surface codes. Our evaluation demonstrates that QECali introduces modest qubit overhead and negligible increases in execution time, offering the first practical solution for in situ calibration in surface code based quantum computation.

Complementary dispersive mirror pair produced in one coating run based on desired non-uniformity

We report a novel one-coating-run method for producing an octave-spanning complementary dispersive mirror (DM) pair. The anti-phase group delay dispersion (GDD) oscillations are realized by two mirrors of the DM pair due to the certain thickness difference. Both mirrors are deposited within a single coating run enabled by the non-uniformity of the ion beam sputtering coating plant, which is obtained by tuning the distance between the source target and coating substrates. Since the DM pair is produced in a single deposition run, the GDD performance is more robust against deposition errors than that of the conventional complementary DM pair, in which two separated coating runs are necessary. Moreover, the new DM pair is compatible for both laser polarizations under the same angle of incidence, which could effectively reduce the difficulties of alignment for their implementation in laser systems than the double angle DM pair. The new DM pair is successfully applied to compress pulses from a Ti: Sapphire laser system down to 4.26 fs in pulse duration.

Validation of the High-Resolution Salish Sea Tidal Hydrodynamic Model

In this study, a tidal hydrodynamic model was developed and validated to simulate tidal currents in Puget Sound, Washington, to support tidal energy resource characterization using the unstructured-grid, Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM). The Salish Sea tidal hydrodynamic model was driven by tides along two open boundaries at the entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and north end of Georgia Strait, and river flows from 19 major rivers in the Salish Sea. To simulate the tidal current in Puget Sound, a high-resolution model grid is required to accurately represent the complex coastlines and bathymetry. The spatial resolution of the model grid varies from ~10 m near river boundaries and ~30 m in small tidal channels and estuaries to near 1000 m inside Georgia Strait and at the open boundaries. Model validation was carried out by comparing simulated and observed water levels at 12 tidal stations and currents at 135 Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler stations in the model domain. A set of model performance metrics, including root mean square error, scatter index, bias, and linear correlation coefficient, were used to quantify the model skills in simulating the tidal hydrodynamics in Puget Sound. Error statistics showed an overall good agreement between simulated and observed tidal elevations and currents, which demonstrated that the Puget Sound tidal model can be used to accurately characterize the tidal stream energy resource in Puget Sound.

Gimballed Tracking Mount Pointing Angle Qualification

Tonopah Test Range (TTR), in support of its testing mission and modernization effort acquired a fleet of new gimballed tracking mounts (GTMs) manufactured by BAE Systems. The new GTMs can be operated remotely during flight tests and provide near real-time target tracking data. Furthermore, test vehicle Time-Space-Position-Information (TSPI) is evaluated using post-test synchronized imagery and pointing angle measurements acquired from each tracking mount. To comply with the Nuclear Enterprise Assurance Program (NEAP), all measurements devices must be certified. In keeping with the NEAP program, qualification of the new GTMs have been assessed to confirm that their pointing angle measurements produce acceptable TSPI results. This study only evaluated the four GTMs as a stand-alone solution and found that the GTMs meet their performance requirement of 0.006 degrees RMS error (or less) for post-processed pointing angles and produced TSPI solution with error volumes on the order of one meter or less. The new GTMs will be utilized in combination with existing optical tracking mounts, which will only improve the accuracy of the resulting TSPI data product. Details regarding the approach, analysis, summary results, and conclusions are presented.

GraphAlign: Graph-Enabled Machine Learning for Seismic Event Filtering

This report summarizes results from a 2 year effort to improve the current automated seismic event processing system by leveraging machine learning models that can operated over the inherent graph data structure of a seismic sensor network. Specifically, the GraphAlign project seeks to utilize prior information on which stations are more likely to detect signals originating from particular geographic regions to inform event filtering. To date, the GraphAlign team has developed a Graphical Neural Network (GNN) model to filter out false events generated by the Global Associator (GA) algorithm. The algorithm operates directly on waveform data that has been associated to an event by building a variable sized graph of station waveforms nodes with edge relations to an event location node. This builds off of previous work where random forest models were used to do the same task using hand crafted features. The GNN model performance was analyzed using an 8 week IMS/IDC dataset, and it was demonstrated that the GNN outperforms the random forest baseline. We provide additional error analysis of which events the GNN model performs well and poorly against concluded by future directions for improvements.

Passband Signal Detection at the Edge

Algorithms for radio frequency (RF) spectrum awareness need to be compatible with edge hardware to be practical for many applications. We developed a signal detection and classification model for the ZCU111 RF System-on-a-Chip (RFSoC) that operates on the fast Fourier transform of passband RF data. The system can detect and classify multiple signals of interest and display the predictions in real-time. The model consists of a modified ConvNeXt backbone and YOLOv3 head to operate on the Deep Learning Processing Unit on the RFSoC. We gathered datasets for training and testing by using a software defined radio to transmit example signals of Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Wi-Fi 802.11 n, FM Radio, LTE and LTE-M. By leveraging multiple inputs on the RFSoC frontend, the datasets span up to 4 GHz of bandwidth. The models showed high performance in classification accuracy, center frequency error, bandwidth error, and detection accuracy for both single and multi-signal datasets.

Near-infrared energy distributions of M31

Spectrophotometric data obtained by comparing Spinrad-Taylor (1969) standards with Alpha Lyr are presented, along with a calibration of these data for wavelengths longward of 6000 A. M31 sky measurements made 1 deg south of the nucleus at five wavelengths between 6040 and 10,360 A, inclusive, are compared with near-IR spectrophotometry performed by Spinrad and Taylor (1971), Oke and Schwarzschild (1975), and O'Connell (1976). Agreement and discrepancies among the different data sets are discussed. Some possible explanations of the differences are discounted, and tests are performed which reveal no effects of error in mean extinction and brightness-dependent wavelength response.

Surface accuracy measurement system deployable reflector antennas

Conceptual optical sensor configurations for measuring the surface deformations of large, deployable space antennas are described. These antennas include precision deployable reflectors up to 30 meters diameter and 1000 GHz frequency and mesh deployable reflectors up to 100 meters diameter and 30 GHz frequency. For each representative antenna configuration, the surface deformation sensor provides continuous, real-time measurements at a sufficient number of sample points to be compatible with active surface control. Moreover, the sensor system does not interfere with the mechanical or microwave characteristics of either the antenna surface or the feed. For the applications considered, the sensor system consists of a central receiver ring containing six to ten long focal length, angle measuring instruments, each viewing a dedicated set of bright point targets at the antenna. The targets, either light emitting diodes or illuminated retroreflectors, are modulated to eliminate errors from spurious backgrounds. Very preliminary performance estimates indicate that the sensor system, using commerical grade components, can produce a 20th to a 30th wavelength accuracy (3 sigma).

Some effects of Field Of View (FOV) and target size on lateral tracking at hover

An exploratory flight-simulator experiment examined the gross effects of several factors potentially important to the design of a visual display system for aiding VTOL pilots in the difficult task of landing on a small sea-control ship. Field of view (FOV) and target size were the primary variables examined for a lateral tracking task in a full motion 5 degree-of-freedom hover simulation. The mean absolute value of tracking error was used to measure tracking performance, and cross spectral transfer function analysis was performed to determine the pilot's ability to generate good open-loop transfer function characteristics as a function of the experimental variables. It was found that FOV and target size can have a large effect on the pilot's ability to generate open-loop gain, and on his tracking performance.
