V/STOL lift fan commercial short haul transports: Continuing conceptual design study

A design study of commercial V/STOL transport airplanes for a 1985 operational time period has been made. The baseline mission considered was 400 nmi at a cruise speed of M = 0.75 and a 100-passenger payload with VTOL. Variations from the baseline included mission distance, payload, cruise speed, and propulsion system failure philosophy. All designs used propulsion systems consisting of multiple gas generators driving remote tip turbine lift and lift/cruise fans. By considering the fan to be designed for operational reliability, significant simplication of the airplane systems and reduction in airplane size and cost can be achieved.

Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the LST system

A describing function of the control moment gyros (CMG) frictional nonlinearity is derived using the analytic torque equation. Computer simulation of the simplified Large Space Telescope (LST) system with the analytic torque expression is discussed along with the transfer functions of the sampled-data LST system, and the discrete describing function of the GMC frictionality.

The continuous measurement of hydrogen chloride in the ambient atmosphere using the dual isotope infrared absorption technique

The results of a program to develop a prototype gas filter correlation NDIR analyzer capable of providing the required HCl measurement capability, while maintaining an adequate rejection of any other gases anticipated in the atmosphere are presented. Examples of the performance of the prototype analyzer are presented which show an rms noise equivalent concentration of 0.06 ppm of HCl was achieved while maintaining an electronically determined 10% to 90% time response to gas samples of about 2 seconds. No measureable response was observed to CO2, CO, and H2O while maintaining an adequate rejection of the hydrocarbons, for example CH4 and n-hexane. The experiments were performed which demonstrate that the span stability of the HCl gas filter correlation analyzer is unaffected by the presence of water vapor and which support the belief that the incorporation of a relatively open-volume, multiple path sample cell into the instrument would enable ground station as well as airborne measurements of trace quantities of HCl in the ambient atmosphere to be performed.

Earth Resources: A continuing bibliography with indexes, issue 1

This bibliography lists 616 reports, articles, and other documents introduced into the NASA scientific and technical information system between January 1974 and March 1974. Emphasis is placed on the use of remote sensing and geophysical instrumentation in spacecraft and aircraft to survey and inventory, natural resources and urban areas. Subject matter is grouped according to agriculture and forestry, environmental changes and cultural resources, geodesy and cartography, geology and mineral resources, oceanography and marine resources, hydrology and water management, data processing and distribution systems, instrumentation and sensors, and economic analysis.

Continued development and application of far-infrared detection techniques

The development of a balloon gondola and pointing system are discussed which can be used with the low background far infrared telescope. Flight test progress of the new gondola is reported using a 3-axis system which would provide much greater capabilities. In this design both a polar and declination axis are use and are maintained in the proper orientation by a free handing (vertical) azimuth shaft.

Continuous liquid level measurements with time-domain reflectometry

Description of the basic principles of radar measurements of cryogenic liquid levels in storage vessels by time-domain reflectometry. The probe consists of a right circular coaxial transmission line positioned vertically in the storage vessel and having holes drilled in the outer conductor to permit penetration of the liquid into the annular gap. RF pulses transmitted through the probe are reflected at liquid/gas interface and returned for sampling at the input. The measured delay of the return pulse is displayed as the level of liquid in the vessel.

Measurement of continuous distributions of ventilation-perfusion ratios - Theory

The resolution of the technique considered is sufficient to describe smooth distributions containing blood flow to unventilated regions (shunt), ventilation to unperfused regions (dead space), and up to three additional modes over the range of finite ventilation-perfusion ratios. In particular, areas whose ventilation-perfusion ratios are low can be separated from unventilated regions and those whose ventilation-perfusion ratios are high can similarly be distinguished from unperfused areas.

Active mode-coupling phenomena in pulsed and continuous lasers

An optical modulator inside a laser cavity, if driven at the cavity c/2L frequency or a harmonic, will produce a variety of mode-coupled short-pulse and FM-laser phenomena. This paper reviews the kinds of CW and transient mode-coupling phenomena that can occur in CW lasers and in selected lower-power pulsed lasers using either an active optical modulator or in some cases passive saturable absorbers.
