Application of Markov chain theory to ASTP natural environment launch criteria at Kennedy Space Center

To aid the planning of the Apollo Soyuz Test Program (ASTP), certain natural environment statistical relationships are presented, based on Markov theory and empirical counts. The practical results are in terms of conditional probability of favorable and unfavorable launch conditions at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). They are based upon 15 years of recorded weather data which are analyzed under a set of natural environmental launch constraints. Three specific forecasting problems were treated: (1) the length of record of past weather which is useful to a prediction; (2) the effect of persistence in runs of favorable and unfavorable conditions; and (3) the forecasting of future weather in probabilistic terms.

Very long chain fatty acids in yeast

Novel fatty acids ranging from 20 to 30 carbons have been found in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These comprise 1 to 2% of the total fatty acid fraction.

Shock tube measurements of specific reaction rates in the branched chain CH4-CO-O2 system

Rate constants of two elementary bimolecular reactions involved in the oxidation of methane have been determined by monitoring the exponential growth of CO flame band emission behind incident shocks in three suitably chosen gas mixtures. The data do not support a mechanism which invokes the four center process CH3 + O2 yields CH2O + OH for the reaction of methyl with oxygen.

Chain pooling to minimize prediction error in subset regression

Monte Carlo studies using population models intended to represent response surface applications are reported. Simulated experiments were generated by adding pseudo random normally distributed errors to population values to generate observations. Model equations were fitted to the observations and the decision procedure was used to delete terms. Comparison of values predicted by the reduced models with the true population values enabled the identification of deletion strategies that are approximately optimal for minimizing prediction errors.

Hybrid measurement chains for the SAS-C spacecraft

Spacecraft electronic systems usually demand tight packaging. It was this consideration which initially forced us to consider hybrid circuits for the analog signal processing circuits in the Small Astronomy Satellite-C (SAS-C) scientific payload. We gradually discovered that increased reliability, low power consumption, and reduced program costs all followed. This paper will attempt to share our laboratory's first experience with hybrid circuits and indicate those areas which we found to be important.

Shock tube measurements of specific reaction rates in the branched chain CH4-CO-O2 system

Growth constants, obtained by measuring the blue CO flame band emission behind incident shock waves, were obtained for two elementary bimolecular reactions involved in the oxidation of methane. Gas mixtures containing small amounts of CH4 with varying amounts of CO, O2, and in one case CO2, diluted with argon, were investigated, and exponential growth constants were derived from plots of the logarithm of observed light intensity versus gas time. The rate constant for the reaction O + CH4 yields CH3 + OH was found to be 1.9 times 10 to the 14th exp(-5900/T) cu cm per mole per sec in the range 1300-2000 K; for the reaction CH3 + O2 yields CH3O + O, the rate constant was determined to be 2.4 times 10 to the 13th exp(-14,500/T) cu cm per mole per sec in the range 1200 to 1900 K.

An investigation of thermal anomalies in the Central American volcanic chain and evaluation of the utility of thermal anomaly monitoring in the prediction of volcanic eruptions

The author has identified the following significant results. Ground truth data collection proves that significant anomalies exist at 13 volcanoes within the test site of Central America. The dimensions and temperature contrast of these ten anomalies are large enough to be detected by the Skylab 192 instrument. The dimensions and intensity of thermal anomalies have changed at most of these volcanoes during the Skylab mission.

Chain Pooling modeling selection as developed for the statistical analysis of a rotor burst protection experiment

As many as three iterated statistical model deletion procedures were considered for an experiment. Population model coefficients were chosen to simulate a saturated 2 to the 4th power experiment having an unfavorable distribution of parameter values. Using random number studies, three model selection strategies were developed, namely, (1) a strategy to be used in anticipation of large coefficients of variation, approximately 65 percent, (2) a strategy to be sued in anticipation of small coefficients of variation, 4 percent or less, and (3) a security regret strategy to be used in the absence of such prior knowledge.

'Chain pooling' model selection for two-level fixed effects factorial experiments

As many as three iterated statistical model deletion procedures are considered for an experiment. Population model coefficients were chosen to simulate a saturated factorial experiment having an unfavorable distribution of parameter values. Using random number studies, three model selection strategies were developed, namely, (1) a strategy to be used in anticipation of large coefficients of variation (neighborhood of 65 percent), (2) strategy to be used in anticipation of small coefficients of variation (4 percent or less), and (3) a security regret strategy to be used in the absence of such prior knowledge.
