Retarding potential analyzer research

Studies were continued in the areas of ionospheric electrodynamics, plasma irregularities, and ion-neutral coupling. The spectral characteristics of structure in the ion concentration and the electric field at high latitudes were examined. It was found that in the region of velocity shears the relationship between the slopes of the two spectra are dependent on the existence of large field-aligned currents and apparently large ionospheric conductivity gradients. The relationship between the Joule dissipation and the locally measured value of the ion temperature were studied by examining the horizontal ion drift velocity. The importance of ion-neutral coupling was investigated in additional studies involving the nature of the coupling at high latitude boundaries and during times of magnetic disturbances. Much of this behavior can be modeled using globular circulation models. In order to study the storm time response of the thermosphere the global ion convection pattern was derived from DE-2 measurements and used as input in a circulation model. The calculated variables of neutral velocity and composition and temperature were compared with measurements to validate the technique.

An Application of Retroduction to Analyzing and Testing the Backing off of Nuts and Bolts During Dynamic Loading

The method of retroduction, adapted from the doctoral thesis of Dr. A. Croce, relies on a process of dialectic questioning that begins with the information sought, proceeds to Given items (either in the form of dimensions or limits of research). and to Known mathematical forms of analysis in design or to principles of study in research. Finally, analysis and synthesis are used to abstract the dielectic questions and to arrive at the information desired. This method is used to solve the engineering design problem of a beam and to determine why bolts and nuts vibrate apart. Both mathematical analysis and dialectic logical analysis are utilized. Results are provided of tests conducted to check the retroductive study of why and how nuts back off.

Analyzing the test process using structural coverage

A large, commercially developed FORTRAN program was modified to produce structural coverage metrics. The modified program was executed on a set of functionally generated acceptance tests and a large sample of operational usage cases. The resulting structural coverage metrics are combined with fault and error data to evaluate structural coverage. It was shown that in the software environment the functionally generated tests seem to be a good approximation of operational use. The relative proportions of the exercised statement subclasses change as the structural coverage of the program increases. A method was also proposed for evaluating if two sets of input data exercise a program in a similar manner. Evidence was provided that implies that in this environment, faults revealed in a procedure are independent of the number of times the procedure is executed and that it may be reasonable to use procedure coverage in software models that use statement coverage. Finally, the evidence suggests that it may be possible to use structural coverage to aid in the management of the acceptance test processed.

A computer system to analyze showers in nuclear emulsions: Center Director's discretionary fund report

A system to rapidly digitize data from showers in nuclear emulsions is described. A TV camera views the emulsions though a microscope. The TV output is superimposed on the monitor of a minicomputer. The operator uses the computer's graphics capability to mark the positions of particle tracks. The coordinates of each track are stored on a disk. The computer then predicts the coordinates of each track through successive layers of emulsion. The operator, guided by the predictions, thus tracks and stores the development of the shower. The system provides a significant improvement over purely manual methods of recording shower development in nuclear emulsion stacks.

Performance comparison of Malvern instruments laser diffraction drop size analyzer

The performance of ten laser diffraction particle sizing instruments (Malvern models 2200 and 2600) has been evaluated using a synthetic particle size reference standard in a round-robin test at nine independent laboratories. A calibration reticle consisting of a two-dimensional array of opaque, circular particle images photoetched in chrome thin film deposited on a glass substrate was used as the reference. Mean diameters (e.g., D32) for the reticle measured by the ten unmodified instruments varied by 27 percent. In contrast, data from six instruments with individually calibrated photodetector correction factors demonstrated much better agreement and were within 2.6 percent of the actual reticle properties.

Simple method for designing or analyzing an optical communication link

A simple method is described for determining the performance of a free space optical communication link. The method can be used either in the system design (synthesis) mode, or in the performance evaluation (analysis) mode. Although restricted to photo counting based detection (e.g., photomultiplier tube or equivalent) of pulse position modulated signals, the method is still sufficiently general to accommodate space-based, as well as ground-based, reception.

Comparison of UNL laser imaging and sizing system and a phase/Doppler system for analyzing sprays from a NASA nozzle

Aerosol spray characterization was done using a P/DPA and a laser imaging/video processing system on a NASA MOD-1 air-assist nozzle being evaluated for use in aircraft icing research. Benchmark tests were performed on monodispersed particles and on the NASA MOD-1 nozzle under identical laboratory operating conditions. The laser imaging/video processing system and the P/DPA showed agreement on calibration tests in monodispersed aerosol sprays of + or - 2.6 microns with a standard deviation of + or - 2.6 microns. Tests were performed on the NASA MOD-1 nozzle on the centerline and radially at one-half inch increments to the outer edge of the spray plume at a distance two feet (0.61 m) downstream from the exit of the nozzle. Comparative results at two operating conditions of the nozzle are presented for the two instruments. For the first case, the deviation in arithmetic mean diameters determined by the two instruments was in a range of 0.1 to 2.8 microns, and the deviation in Sauter mean diameters varied from 0 to 2.2 microns. Operating conditions in the second case were more severe which resulted in the arithmetic mean diameter deviating from 1.4 to 7.1 microns and the deviation in the Sauter mean diameters ranging from 0.4 to 6.7 microns.

The discrete correlation function: A new method for analyzing unevenly sampled variability data

A method of measuring correlation functions without interpolating in the temporal domain, the discrete correlation function, is introduced. It provides an assumption-free representation of the correlation measured in the data, and allows meaningful error estimates. This method does not produce spurious correlations at zero lag due to correlated errors. It is shown that physical interpretation of active galactic nuclei cross-correlation functions requires knowledge of the input function's fluctuation power spectrum, involves model-dependence in the form of symmetry assumptions, and must take into account intrinsic scale bias. This technique was used to find a correlation in published IUE data for NGC 4151, which indicates that the broad C IV feature emanates from a shell 15 to 75 light-days in radius, assuming spherical symmetry.

Use of inelastic strain as a basis for analyzing thermomechanical test data

It was shown that the proposed data analysis method, based on inelastic strain-time response, can be used effectively to represent cyclic response at elevated temperatures for Hastelloy-X. A high level of confidence in this method was built by making comparisons of the experimental and fitted data in two forms. Because of this level of confidence, the analysis was taken one step further and inelastic strain rates were calculated from the derivatives of the fit equations.

X-ray fluorescence surface contaminant analyzer: A feasibility study

The bonding of liner material to the inner metal surfaces of solid rocket booster cases is adversely affected by minute amounts of impurities on the metal surface. Suitable non-destructive methods currently used for detecting these surface contaminants do not provide the means of identifying their elemental composition. The feasibility of using isotopic source excited energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence as a possible technique for elemental analysis of such contaminants is investigated. A survey is made of the elemental compositions of both D-6ac steel, a common construction material for the booster cases, and Conoco HD-2 grease, a common surface contamination. Source and detector choices that maximize signal to noise ratio in a Recessed Source Geometry are made. A Monte Carlo simulation is then made of the optimized device incorporating the latest available X-ray constants at the energy of the chosen source to determine the device's response to a D-6ac steel surface contained with Conoco HD-2 grease.
