Nuclear Structural Component Relevant Properties of Nickel-Based Alloys Produced via Additive Manufacturing

Idaho National Laboratory initiated examination of nickel-based alloys manufactured via three different additive manufacturing methods for potential applications in nuclear, high temperature structural components. The three methods analyzed included laser powder bed fusion, blown powder laser directed energy deposition, and wire-fed gas metal arc directed energy deposition. With the rapid push towards additive manufacturing, codes do not exist that definitively define what is or is not tolerable for each process and application, such as with conventional, wrought products. This report contains the initial work to understand possible manufacturing methods for high temperature alloys, and specifically, void formation, microstructure evolution, corrosion, and mechanical properties. To generate mechanical test data, specimens were tested irrespective of voids and microstructures were analyzed to better understand how to negate/improve these issues. The preliminary results showed major decreases in mechanical performance for material tested. Test specimens will continue to be produced to further improve each additive manufacturing processes, quantify void acceptance, and better understand the most suitable high temperature alloys receptive to additive manufacturing and high temperature nuclear applications.

Structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17

Structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of iron-deficient (Nd 1-x Ce x )YFe 17 alloys in the rhombohedral Th 2 Zn 17 –type crystal structure prepared by arc-melting and vacuum annealing have been investigated. Among the investigated alloys, (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17 shows the highest values of magnetic entropy change and relative cooling power, namely 5.45 J kg -1 K -1 and 504 J kg -1 for a magnetic field change of 5 T. The Curie temperature and saturation magnetization of the (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17 alloy are 301 K and 162 emu/g, respectively. The absence of thermal and magnetic hysteresis with relatively high cooling capacity near room temperature suggests that Fe-deficient (Nd 0.7 Ce 0.3 )YFe 17 carries significant potential for room-temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Structural and thermal properties of Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O and Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O

The title compounds were prepared via a wet chemistry route and their crystal structures were determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O crystallizes with a monoclinic symmetry, space group P2 1 /c, with a = 5.5415(2), b = 8.3447(3), c = 11.2281(3) Å, β = 100.172(1)°, V = 511.05(3) Å 3 and Z = 2. Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O also crystallizes with a monoclinic symmetry, space group P2 1 /c, with a = 12.5050(8), b = 6.4812(4), c = 10.0210(6) Å, β = 106.138(2)°, V = 780.17(8) Å3 and Z = 2. Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O is a new member of the blödite family of compounds, whereas Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O is isostructural with Na 2 Mg(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O. The structure of Na 2 Mn(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O is built up of [Mn(SO 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] 2– building blocks connected through moderate O–H…O hydrogen bonds with the sodium atoms occupying the large tunnels along the a axis and the manganese atom lying on an inversion center, whereas the structure of Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O is built up of [Ni(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ and [Na 2 (SO 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] 2– layers. These layers which are parallel to the (100) plane are interconnected through moderate O–H…O hydrogen bonds. Here, the thermal gravimetric- and the powder X-ray diffraction-analyzes showed that only the nickel phase was almost pure. At a temperature above 300 °C, all the water molecules evaporated and a structural phase transition from P2 1 /c-Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 ·10H 2 O to C2/c-Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 was observed. C2/c-Na 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 is thermally more stable than Na 2 Fe(SO 4 ) 2 and therefore it would be suitable as the positive electrode for sodium ion batteries if a stable electrolyte at high voltage is developed.

Structural and magnetic properties of CoTeMo⁢O 6

Here, we have conducted a comprehensive investigation into the magnetic properties of the chiral multiferroic material CoTeMo⁢O 6 . In contrast with the previous claim of canted antiferromagnetic order with ferromagnetic components [Y. Doi et al., J. Solid State Chem. 182, 3232 (2009)], our investigation reveals an antiferromagnetic ground state with compensated moments, providing an interesting platform for exploring exotic material properties. Through careful measurements of magnetization under a series of applied fields, we demonstrate that there exist two sequential field-induced magnetic transitions in CoTeMo⁢O 6 , with one occurring at 𝐻 𝑐⁢1 =460 Oe along the 𝑎 axis, and the other at 𝐻 𝑐⁢2 =1.16 T with the field along the 𝑏 axis. The values of 𝐻 𝑐⁢1 and 𝐻 𝑐⁢2 exhibit strong angular dependence and diverge with different rates as the applied field is rotated 90 ° within the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane. This reflects the distinct nature of these transitions, which is further supported by the different critical behavior of 𝐻 𝑐⁢1 and 𝐻 𝑐⁢2 , characterized by the values of 𝛾, in the function of 𝐻 𝑐 =𝐻 0 ⁡(1−𝑇/𝑇 𝑐 ) 𝛾 . Furthermore, we have demonstrated that there exist structural and magnetic twin domains in CoTeMo⁢O 6 that strongly affect the experimental measurement of their macroscopic properties. Intriguingly, these twin domains can be related to the orthorhombicity/chirality of the crystal structure with the space group 𝑃⁢2 1 ⁢2 1⁢ 2. We further explored the magnetic and structural domains with uniaxial pressure and polarized light microscopy. Our results suggest that CoTeMo⁢O 6 could be used as a unique platform for investigating the intriguing physics involving intertwined degrees of freedom. The tunability of the underlying domain distribution and its strong anisotropy could also be useful for developing functional devices and applications.

Electronic Structure and Mechanical Properties of Solvated Montmorillonite Clay Using Large-Scale DFT Method

Montmorillonite clay (MMT) has been widely used in engineering and environmental applications as a landfill barrier and toxic waste repository due to its unique property as an expandable clay mineral that can absorb water easily. This absorption process rendered MMT to be highly exothermic due to electrostatic interactions among molecules and hydrogen bonds between surface atoms. A detailed study of a large supercell model of structural clay enables us to predict long-term nuclear waste storage. Herein, a large solvent MMT model with 4071 atoms is studied using ab initio density functional theory. The DFT calculation and analysis clarify the important issues, such as bond strength, solvation effect, elasticity, and seismic wave velocities. These results are compared to our previous study on crystalline MMT (dry). The solvated MMT has reduced shear modulus (G), bulk modulus (K), and Young’s modulus (E). We observe that the conduction band (CB) in the density of states (DOS) of solvated MMT model has a single, conspicuous peak at –8.5 eV. Moreover, the atom-resolved partial density of states (PDOS) summarizes the roles played by each atom in the DOS. These findings illuminate numerous potential sophisticated applications of MMT clay.

Evaluating the effects of structural disorder on the magnetic properties of Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7

Motivated by the variation in reported lattice parameters of floating-zone-grown Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 crystals, we have performed a detailed study of the relationship between synthesis environment, structural disorder, and magnetic properties. Using a combination of polycrystalline standards, electron-probe microanalysis, and scattering techniques, we show that crystals grown under atmospheric conditions have a reduced lattice parameter relative to pristine polycrystalline powders due to occupation of the Nd site by excess Zr (i.e., negative stuffing). In contrast, crystals grown under high-pressure Ar are nearly stoichiometric with an average lattice parameter approaching the polycrystalline value. While minimal disorder of the oxygen sublattices is observed on the scale of the average structure, neutron pair-distribution function analysis indicates a highly local disorder of the oxygen coordination, which is only weakly dependent on growth environment. Most importantly, our magnetization, heat capacity, and single-crystal neutron scattering data show that the magnetic properties of crystals grown under high-pressure Ar match closely with those of stoichiometric powders. Neutron scattering measurements reveal that the signature of magnetic moment fragmentation—the coexistence of all-in-all-out (AIAO) magnetic Bragg peaks and diffuse pinch-point scattering due to spin-ice correlations–persists in these nearly stoichiometric crystals. However, in addition to an increased AIAO transition temperature, the diffuse signal is seemingly stabilized and remains nearly unchanged upon warming to 800 mK. This behavior indicates that both the AIAO magnetic order and spin-ice correlations are sensitive to deviations of the Nd stoichiometry.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19

Here, in this study, a novel magnetic semimetal compound, Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , was synthesized successfully via high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 was determined using both single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques, revealing a non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic space group, Pmn2 1 (No. 31). The Sb atoms in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 form five-atom-wide Sb 5 7− ribbons, narrower three-atom-wide Sb 3 5− ribbons, and single Sb 3− anions. On the other hand, both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions form the distorted Gd 3 and Mn 3 triangular lattices, respectively. The magnetic measurements suggest the complex magnetic interactions contributed by both Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ ions. A sharp peak observed in the magnetic susceptibility plot at approximately 25 K corresponds to the antiferromagnetic-type transition in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 . Furthermore, the magnetic measurements along different directions indicate the strong magnetic anisotropy present in Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 , which is likely due to the complex magnetic interactions arising from the existence of Gd and Mn ions. Finally, the electrical resistivity measurements of Gd 8 Mn 3 Sb 19 indicate semimetallic behavior with a positive magnetoresistance.

Synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of CoMoFeAl and related compounds

We have carried out joint theoretical and experimental investigations of three Heusler compounds CoMoFeAl, CoMo 0.5 Fe 1.5 Al, and Co 1.5 Mo 0.5 FeAl. Our first-principle calculations show that all three compounds show either ferro- or ferrimagnetic order with CoMoFeAl and CoMo 0.5 Fe 1.5 Al exhibiting high spin polarization of almost 80%. The investigated samples were prepared using arc melting and high vacuum annealing. All the samples show cubic crystal structure with disorder. The parent compound CoMoFeAl shows a small saturation magnetization of 12 emu/g, and a Curie temperature of 440 K. The other two compounds, namely, Co 1.5 Mo 0.5 FeAl and CoMo 0.5 Fe 1.5 Al, show much higher saturation magnetizations of 62 emu/g and 59 emu/g, and substantially higher Curie temperatures of 950 K and 780 K, respectively.

Synthesis, structure, and transport properties of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 clathrate solid solution

In this work, a new clathrate solid solution Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 ( x = 4, 8, 12) was synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state annealing method. The crystal structures of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 were determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction. This clathrate solid solution crystallizes in the orthorhombic superstructure of clathrate-I type with 23 crystallographically independent framework sites, eight of them are occupied by Au/Cu and 15 are exclusively occupied by P atoms. The distribution of Au and Cu atoms over these eight framework sites is not random with a clear preference for Au to occupy the largest (Au/Cu)P 4 tetrahedra in the framework. The thermal stability and thermoelectric properties of the Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 solid solution were evaluated. Low thermal conductivity was achieved for Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 due to the combination of the host–guest crystal structure with rattling Ba atoms with the presence of heavy Au atoms and substitutional Cu/Au disorder in the clathrate framework.

Influence of Cation Size on the Local Atomic Structure and Electronic Properties of Ta Perovskite Oxynitrides

Partial anion substitution in transition metal oxides provides rich opportunities to control and tune physical and chemical properties, for example, combining the merits of oxides and nitrides. In addition, the possibility of resulting anion sublattice order provides a means to target polar and chiral structures based on a wide array of accessible structural archetypes by design. Here, in this work, we investigate the local structures of a family of perovskite tantalum oxynitrides—ATaO 2 N (A = Ba, Sr, and Ca)—using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches including neutron total scattering, density functional theory (DFT), and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We present the first experimental study of chemical short-range order (CSRO) in CaTaO 2 N, confirming local cis N ordering of the anion sub-lattice. Our systematic exploration of a local structure across the A cation size series (from the larger Ba to the smaller Ca) reveals a perovskite motif increasingly distorted with respect to long-range average structures. DFT and AIMD simulations support the observed trends. Overall, structures with cis ordering of the nitrogen anions in each TaO 4 N 2 octahedron are favored over those with trans ordering. With diminishing A cation size, local cis ordering and Ta off-centering play decreasing roles in overall lattice stability, overshadowed by the stabilizing effects of octahedral tilting. The influence of these factors on local dipole formation and frustrated dipole ordering are discussed.

Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Structural and magnetic properties of hard magnetic system Ce(Co 1 -Fe ) 4.4 Cu 0.6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.19)

The Ce(Co 1 -Fe ) 4.4 Cu 0.6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.19) is a composite, hard magnetic system that is based on the CaCu 5 -type structure (1:5). It shows both, unique magnetic and microstructural features that are essential for permanent magnets, e.g., exceptional squareness of the 2nd. quadrant of the magnetization loops and microstructural features typically needed for pinning. Samples solidified in alumina crucibles are coarse-grained and often clearly faceted and readily align in a magnetic field. X-ray, SEM, and TEM analyses show a 1:5-type single-phase material when quenched from high temperature, which, after heat treatment, transforms into a laminar coherent nanostructure through the formation of a dense array of extended intercalated regions. Furthermore, these extended intercalated regions are comprised of segments of the Ce 2 Ni 7 –type structure (2:7) which segregate into various closely related precipitates forming a nanostructure similar to the SmCo 5 - Sm 2 Co 17 composites seen in Sm-Co permanent magnets. Based on TEM and Lorentz microscopy of well-aligned single grain particles, the magnetic domains’ reversal mechanism is regulated by anisotropy fluctuations occurring along the easy direction of magnetization and strong exchange interactions between the matrix and defects (e.g.: stacking faults). Lorentz microscopy suggests the domain wall is not physically pinned by the defect, but rather is offset/deflected when it interacts with the defect. The Lorentz and magnetization data suggest that defects cause a bending of the moment away from the c axis inside the grains.

Structural and magnetic properties of magnetostrictive Fe-Ga-Zr nanocrystalline alloy

(Fe 1–x Ga x ) 92 Zr 8 amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys with x = 0.15 to x = 0.36 were investigated to improve the magnetic softness of Galfenol-type alloys and to evaluate their magnetostrictive properties. The samples were prepared by melt spinning of arc melted ingots. The rapidly solidified ribbons were annealed at 823 K for 1 h to produce a nanocrystalline structure. X-ray Diffraction data showed that after annealing, body-centered cubic (BCC) Fe-Ga phase crystallized for x = 0.15 to x = 0.26. When x exceeded 0.26, the ribbons crystallized into BCC and a ternary intermetallic phase (i.e., ZrFe 6 Ga 6 ) which has deteriorating effect on saturation magnetization, magnetic softness and magnetostriction coefficient. The annealed ribbons’ saturation magnetization value decreases from 126 Am 2 /kg to 54 Am 2 /kg as the Ga content increased from x = 0.15 to x = 0.36. The alloy with x = 0.26 annealed at 823 K for 1 h shows a peak magnetostriction of 10 ppm with saturation magnetization of 110 Am 2 /kg and coercivity of 260 A/m.

XANES analysis of phosphate glasses melted with Tb 4 O 7 and SnO: evaluating the impact of valence states on structural, thermal, and luminescent properties

Barium phosphate glasses were prepared with 0.5 mol% Tb 4 O 7 added alongside SnO up to 5 mol% with the purpose of evaluating the resulting terbium and tin oxidation states and their impact on glass structural, thermal, and luminescent properties. In this work, following material synthesis by melt-quenching, the composition-structure–property investigation was pursued encompassing measurements by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dilatometry, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. While XRD confirmed the amorphous nature of the glasses, results from XANES indicated that terbium occurs as terbium(III) with a predisposition for tin to exist as tin(IV) which decreased at high SnO content. The structural as well as the thermal properties appeared to be mostly impacted by the presence of tin(IV). Specifically, glass depolymerization was indicated to be induced by Sn 4+ ions, and their concentration was observed to correlate with glass transition and softening temperatures. On the other hand, the tin(II) remnants were observed to exert an impact on the luminescent properties shifting light emission from the green towards the blue-green (cyan). It is indicated that Tb 4 O 7 reacting to produce Tb 2 O 3 supports the oxidation of tin(II) to tin(IV) which in turn dominates the physical properties. However, this was somewhat circumvented at the highest SnO content wherein tin(IV) appeared to be lower.

Structural and thermal properties of ultralow thermal conductivity Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10

The thermal properties of Ba 3 Cu 2 Sn 3 Se 10 were investigated by measurement of the thermal conductivity and heat capacity. The chemical bonding in this diamagnetic material was investigated using structural data from Rietveld refinement and calculated electron localization. This quaternary chalcogenide is monoclinic (P2 1 /c), has a large unit cell with 72 atoms in the primitive cell, and a high local coordination environment. Additionally, the Debye temperature (162 K) and average speed of sound (1666 m s -1 ) are relatively low with a very small electronic contribution to the heat capacity. Ultralow thermal conductivity (0.46 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature) is attributed to the relatively weak chemical bonding and intrinsic anharmonicity, in addition to a large unit cell. This work is part of the continuing effort to explore quaternary chalcogenides with intrinsically low thermal conductivity and identify the features that result in a low thermal conductivity.

A versatile strategy for controlled assembly of plasmonic metal/semiconductor hemispherical nano-heterostructure arrays

Recent advances in manipulating plasmonic properties of metal/semiconductor heterostructures have opened up new avenues for basic research and applications. Herein, we present a versatile strategy for the assembly of arrays of plasmonic metal/semiconductor hemispherical nano-heterostructures (MSHNs) with control over spacing and size of the metal/semiconductor heterostructure array, which can facilitate a wide range of scientific studies and applications. The strategy combines nanosphere lithography for generating the metal core array with solution-based chemical methods for the semiconductor shell that are widely available and kinetically controllable. Periodic arrays of Au/Cu 2 O and Ag/Cu 2 O heterostructures are synthesized to demonstrate the approach and highlight the versatility and importance of the tunability of plasmonic properties. The morphology, structure, optical properties, and elemental compositions of the heterostructures were analyzed. Finally, this strategy can be important for understanding and manipulating fundamental nanoscale solid-state physical and chemical properties, as well as assembling heterostructures with desirable structure and functionality for applications.

All-Atom Simulations Uncover Structural and Dynamical Properties of STING Proteins in the Membrane System

Recent studies have shown that the stimulator of interferon gene (STING) protein plays a central role in the immune system by facilitating the production of type I interferons in cells. The STING signaling pathway is also a prominent activator of cancer-killing T cells that initiate a powerful adaptive immune response. Since biomolecular signaling pathways are complicated and not easily identified through traditional experiments, molecular dynamics (MD) has often been used to study structural and dynamical responses of biological pathways. In this work, we carried out MD simulations for full-length chicken and human STING (chSTING and hSTING) proteins. Specifically, we investigated ligand-bound closed (holo) and ligand-unbound open (apo) forms of STING in the membrane system by comparing their conformational and dynamical differences. Our research provides clues for understanding the mechanism of the STING signaling pathway by uncovering detailed insights for the examined systems: the residues from each chain in the binding pocket are strongly correlated to one another in the open STING structure compared with those in the closed STING structure. Ligand-bound closed STING displays ~174° rotation of the ligand-binding domain (LBD) relative to the open STING structure. The dynamical analysis of residue Cys148 located in the linker region of hSTING does not support the earlier hypothesis that Cys148 can form disulfide bonds between adjacent STING dimers. We also demonstrate that using the full-length proteins is critical, since the MD simulations of the LBD portion alone cannot properly describe the global conformational properties of STING.
