Entrainment in solution of an oscillating NADH oxidase activity from the bovine milk fat globule membrane with a temperature-compensated period length suggestive of an ultradian time-keeping (clock) function

Entrainment in solution of an oscillating activity with a temperature compensated period of 24 min is described for a NADH oxidase (NOX) activity of the bovine milk fat globule membrane, a derivative of the mammary epithelial cell plasma membrane. The period of 24 min remained unchanged at 17 degrees C, 27 degrees C and 37 degrees C whereas the amplitude approximately doubled with each 10 degree C rise in temperature (Q(10)congruent with 2). The periodicity was observed with both intact milk fat globule membranes and with detergent-solubilized membranes, demonstrating that the oscillations did not require an association with membranes. The periodicity was not the result of instrument variation or of chemical interactions among reactants in solution. Preparations with different periodicities entrained (autosynchronized) when mixed. Upon mixing, the preparations exhibited two oscillatory patterns but eventually a single pattern representing the mean of the farthest separated maxima of the two preparations analyzed separately emerged. The cell surface NOX protein is the first reported example of an entrainable biochemical entity with a temperature-compensated periodicity potentially capable of functioning as an ultradian or circadian clock driver.

Growth inhibition, turgor maintenance, and changes in yield threshold after cessation of solute import in pea epicotyls

The dependence of stem elongation on solute import was investigated in etiolated pea seedlings (Pisum sativum L. var Alaska) by excising the cotyledons. Stem elongation was inhibited by 60% within 5 hours of excision. Dry weight accumulation into the growing region stopped and osmotic pressure of the cell sap declined by 0.14 megapascal over 5 hours. Attempts to assay phloem transport via ethylenediaminetetraacetate-enhanced exudation from cut stems revealed no effect of cotyledon excision, indicating that the technique measured artifactual leakage from cells. Despite the drop in cell osmotic pressure, turgor pressure (measured directly via a pressure probe) did not decline. Turgor maintenance is postulated to occur via uptake of solutes from the free space, thereby maintaining the osmotic pressure difference across the cell membrane. Cell wall properties were measured by the pressure-block stress relaxation technique. Results indicate that growth inhibition after cotyledon excision was mediated primarily via an increase in the wall yield threshold.

Relative reactivity of ribosyl 2'-OH vs. 3'-OH in concentrated aqueous solutions of phosphoimidazolide activated nucleotides

Phosphoimidazolide activated ribomononucleotides (*pN, see structure) are useful substrates for the non-enzymatic synthesis of oligonucleotides. In the presence of metal ions, aqueous solutions of *pN yield primarily the two internucleotide-linked (pN2' pN and pN3' pN) and the pyrophosphate-linked (N5' ppN) dimers. Small amounts of cyclic dimers and higher oligomers are also produced. In this study the relative reactivity of 2'-OH vs. 3'-OH was determined from the ratio of the yields of pN2' pN vs. pN3' pN. Experiments were performed at 23 degrees C in the range 7.2 < or = pH < or = 8.4 with substrates that differ in nucleobase (guanosine (G), cytidine (C), uridine (U), and adenosine (A)) and leaving group (imidazole (Im), 2-methylimidazole (2-MeIm) and 2,4-dimethylimidazole (2,4-diMeIm)). Two metal ions (Mg2+ or Mn2+) were employed as catalysts. The conditions used here, i.e. a substrate concentration in the range 0.1 M to 1.0 M and metal ion concentration in the range 0.05 M to 0.2 M, favor base-stacking interactions. The ratio pN2' pN: pN3' pN = 2'-5': 3'-5' was found independent of nucleobase and typically varied between 2 to 3 indicating that the 2'-OH is about 2 to 3 times more reactive than the 3'-OH. *pN with Im, compared to 2-MeIm and 2,4-diMeIm leaving group, produce lower yields of internucleotide linked dimers, and a higher pN2' pN: pN3' pN ratio. Trends in the data, observed with all three leaving groups, suggest an increase in pN2' pN: pN3' pN ratio with decreasing substrate concentration (up to 5.47 with 0.051 M ImpG). The observations are in accord with earlier studies reporting a relative reactivity 2'-5': 3'-5' = 6 to 9 obtained with Im as the leaving group, in dilute nucleotide solutions and under conditions that disfavor stacking. It is speculated that the concentration induced change in the relative reactivity is the result of self-association via base-stacking that enhances selectively the proximity of the 3'-OH of one molecule to the reactive P-N bond of an other molecule. The implication of these conclusions for oligomerization/ligation reactions is discussed.

Preparation and Some Properties of N-Type IrxCo1-xSB3 Solid Solutions

A number of studies have been recently devoted to the preparation and characterization of binary skutterudite materials to investigate their potential as advanced thermoelectric materials. These studies show that the potential of these binary skutterudite compounds is limited because of their relatively large thermal conductivity. In order to achieve high thermoelectric figure of merits for these materials, efforts should focus on thermal conductivity reduction. Recent results obtained on n-type CoSb3 and IrSb3 compounds have shown that n-type skutterudite materials might have a better potential for thermoelectric applications than p-type materials. The thermoelectric properties of p-type IrxCo1-xSb3 solid solutions have been recently investigated and it was shown that a substantial reduction in thermal conductivity was achieved. We prepared and measured some properties of n-type IrxCo1-xSb3 solid solutions. The samples are characterized by large Seebeck coefficient values and significantly lower thermal conductivity values than those measured on the binary compounds CoSb3 and IrSb3. A maximum ZT value of about 0.4 was obtained at a temperature of about 300(deg)C. Improvements in the figure of merit are possible in this system by optimization of the doping level.

Solution combustion synthesis of iron-based alumina catalysts for dehydrogenation of fossil fuels

Microwave-assisted thermocatalytic dehydrogenation of fossil fuels has been proposed as a method for hydrogen production with no CO2 emissions. The byproduct is carbon, which has a commercial value. Iron-based alumina nanocomposites are promising catalysts for this process as they both absorb microwave radiation and catalyze the dehydrogenation. In addition, they may have magnetic properties, which could be used for their separation from the carbon byproduct. Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is an attractive technique for the fabrication of iron-based alumina nanocomposites because it can produce high specific surface area oxides in a facile manner. However, the effects of the heating mode, the fuel, and the iron/aluminum ratio on the combustion synthesis behavior and the product properties have not been studied yet. In the present work, the iron-based alumina nanocomposites were obtained by SCS using a hotplate, a muffle furnace, and a microwave oven. The initial mixtures were aqueous solutions of iron nitrate, aluminum nitrate, and an organic fuel. The concentrations of the two nitrates were varied in proportion to Fe:Al molar ratios of 1:2, 1:1, and 2:1. Two fuels were tested: citric acid and glycine. The combustion was less vigorous when citric acid was used as the fuel, which is explained by the lower exothermicity of the reaction. X-ray diffraction analysis of the products confirmed the formation of complex oxides of Fe and Al, specifically it detected hercynite and magnetite phases. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis has shown that the powders obtained using citric acid have specific surface areas as high as 276 m2/g, significantly higher than those obtained using glycine. Muffle furnace and hotplate heating led to comparable specific surface areas, while microwave heating resulted in significantly lower specific surface areas. The magnetic properties of the products increase with increasing the Fe/Al molar ratio from 1:2 (no response to a magnetic field) to 1:1 (weak response) and 2:1 (strong response).

Solution combustion synthesis of iron-based alumina nanocomposites for clean production of hydrogen from fossil fuels

Iron-based alumina nanocomposites are promising materials for microwave-assisted thermocatalytic dehydrogenation of fossil fuels, which has been proposed for the production of hydrogen with no CO2 emissions. Solution combustion synthesis (SCS) is an attractive technique for the fabrication of these materials because it has been used for synthesis of many nanoscale oxides. However, SCS can be carried out using different organic fuels and different heating equipment, and it is important to determine which fuel and heating mode generate materials with the best properties for dehydrogenation, such as maximized specific surface area. In the present work, the iron-based alumina nanocomposites were obtained by SCS using two different fuels (citric acid and glycine) and two different heating modes (a hotplate and a muffle furnace). The precursors/oxidizers were iron nitrate and aluminum nitrate. They were mixed with the fuel according to stoichiometry and dissolved in water. Heating the solution resulted in combustion synthesis. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, laser diffraction particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The experiments have shown that the specific surface area of the iron-based alumina nanocomposites obtained by SCS can be dramatically increased by using citric acid instead of glycine, and additionally by using a muffle furnace instead of a hotplate.

Ligand Substituent Effects on the Electronic Properties of Lindqvist‐Type Polyoxometalate Multi‐Level‐Switches in the Gas Phase, Solution and on Surfaces

Abstract Although the intrinsic electronic properties of polyoxometalates (POMs) can be greatly influenced by modifying them with organic substituents, their resistive switching behavior on surfaces dependent on the organic substituents remains largely unexplored. In this work, we assessed the importance of electron‐withdrawing and electron‐donating ligand substituents on the material properties of a series of hybrid Lindqvist‐type hexavanadates TBA 2 [V 6 O 13 ((OCH 2 ) 3 CCH 2 OH) 2 ] (TBA 2 V 6 ‐OH), TBA 2 [V 6 O 13 ((OCH 2 ) 3 CMe) 2 ] (TBA 2 V 6 ‐Me), TBA 2 [V 6 O 13 ((OCH 2 ) 3 CNHCOCH 2 Cl) 2 ] (TBA 2 V 6 ‐Cl), and TBA 2 [V 6 O 13 ((OCH 2 ) 3 CNHCOCH 2 ‐OOCC 10 H 15 ) 2 ] (TBA 2 V 6 ‐Ad) as potential resistive random‐access memory (ReRAM) components. Compared to their redox behavior in solution, changing the ligand substituents on surfaces results in no significant effect on the potential and, thus, no effect on the resistance steps in the current‐voltage profiles. However, while the current‐voltage characteristics do not change, the peripheral metal‐free substituents in the trisalkoxide framework of Lindqvist‐type hexavanadate molecules influence the adsorption and switching stability of these POMs on gold. This work highlights the noticeable differences between hexavanadate's redox properties in solution (which follow the trend observed in the gas phase) and hexavanadate's resistive switching properties on conducting surfaces. Importantly, their multi‐state switching behavior is not significantly altered by the different type of substituent at the periphery of the trisalkoxo ligands.

Realizing Complete Solid-Solution Reaction in High Sodium Content P2-Type Cathode for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

P2-type layered oxides suffer from an ordered Na + /vacancy arrangement and P2→O2/OP4 phase transitions, leading them to exhibit multiple voltage plateaus upon Na + extraction/insertion. The deficient sodium in the P2-type cathode easily induces the bad structural stability at deep desodiation states and limited reversible capacity during Na + de/insertion. These drawbacks cause poor rate capability and fast capacity decay in most P2-type layered oxides. In this work, to address these challenges, a novel high sodium content (0.85) and plateau-free P2-type cathode-Na 0.85 Li 0.12 Ni 0.22 Mn 0.66 O 2 (P2-NLNMO) was developed. The complete solid-solution reaction over a wide voltage range ensures both fast Na + mobility (10 -11 to 10 -10 cm 2 s -1 ) and small volume variation (1.7%). Furthermore, the high sodium content P2-NLNMO exhibits a higher reversible capacity of 123.4 mAhg -1 , superior rate capability of 79.3 mAhg -1 at 20 C, and 85.4% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 5 C. The sufficient Na and complete solid-solution reaction are critical to realizing high-performance P2-type cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Highly Flexible Dielectric Films from Solution Processable Covalent Organic Frameworks**

Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are known to be a promising class of materials for a wide range of applications, yet their poor solution processability limits their utility in many areas. Here we report a pore engineering method using hydrophilic side chains to improve the processability of hydrazone and β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs and the production of flexible, crystalline films. Mechanical measurements of the free‐standing COF films of COF‐PEO‐3 (hydrazone‐linked) and TFP‐PEO‐3 (β‐ketoenamine‐linked), revealed a Young's modulus of 391.7 MPa and 1034.7 MPa, respectively. The solubility and excellent mechanical properties enabled the use of these COFs in dielectric devices. Specifically, the TFP‐PEO‐3 film‐based dielectric capacitors display simultaneously high dielectric constant and breakdown strength, resulting in a discharged energy density of 11.22 J cm −3 . This work offers a general approach for producing solution processable COFs and mechanically flexible COF‐based films, which hold great potential for use in energy storage and flexible electronics applications.

Chelator‐Assisted Precipitation‐Based Separation of the Rare Earth Elements Neodymium and Dysprosium from Aqueous Solutions

The rare earth elements (REEs) are critical resources for many clean energy technologies, but are difficult to obtain in their elementally pure forms because of their nearly identical chemical properties. Here, an analogue of macropa, G-macropa, was synthesized and employed for an aqueous precipitation-based separation of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ . G-macropa maintains the same thermodynamic preference for the large REEs as macropa, but shows smaller thermodynamic stability constants. Molecular dynamics studies demonstrate that the binding affinity differences of these chelators for Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ is a consequence of the presence or absence of an inner-sphere water molecule, which alters the donor strength of the macrocyclic ethers. Leveraging the small REE affinity of G-macropa, we demonstrate that within aqueous solutions of Nd 3+ , Dy 3+ , and G-macropa, the addition of HCO 3 − selectively precipitates Dy 2 (CO 3 ) 3 , leaving the Nd 3+ −G-macropa complex in solution. With this method, remarkably high separation factors of 841 and 741 are achieved for 50 : 50 and 75 : 25 mixtures. Further studies involving Nd 3+ :Dy 3+ ratios of 95 : 5 in authentic magnet waste also afford an efficient separation as well. Finally, G-macropa is recovered via crystallization with HCl and used for subsequent extractions, demonstrating its good recyclability.

Efficient Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 to Formate in Methanol Solutions by Mn‐Functionalized Electrodes in the Presence of Amines**

Carbon cloth electrode modified by covalently attaching a manganese organometallic catalyst is used as cathode for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 in methanol solutions. Six different industrial amines are employed as co-catalyst in millimolar concentrations to deliver a series of new reactive system. While such absorbents were so far believed to provide a CO 2 reservoir and act as sacrificial proton source, we herein demonstrate that this role can be played by methanol, and that the adduct formed between CO 2 and the amine can act as an effector or inhibitor toward the catalyst, thereby enhancing or reducing the production of formate. Pentamethyldiethylentriamine (PMDETA), identified as the best effector in our series, converts CO 2 in wet methanolic solution into bisammonium bicarbonate. Computational studies revealed that this adduct is responsible for a barrierless transformation of CO 2 to formate by the reduced form of the Mn catalyst covalently bonded to the electrode surface. As a consequence, selectivity can be switched on demand from CO to formate anion, and in the case of (PMDETA) an impressive TON HCOO- of 2.8×10 4 can be reached. This new valuable knowledge on an integrated capture and utilization system paves the way toward more efficient transformation of CO 2 into liquid fuel.

Extended q -Range X-Ray Scattering Reveals High-Resolution Structural Details of Biomacromolecules in Aqueous Solutions

Here, we communicate a feasibility study for high-resolution structural characterization of biomacromolecules in aqueous solution from X-ray scattering experiments measured over a range of scattering vectors (q) that is approximately two orders of magnitude wider than used previously for such systems. Scattering data with such an extended q-range enables the recovery of the underlying real-space atomic pair distribution function, which facilitates structure determination. We demonstrate the potential of this method for biomacromolecules using several types of cyclodextrins (CD) as model systems. We successfully identified deviations of the tilting angles for the glycosidic units in CDs in aqueous solutions relative to their values in the crystalline forms of these molecules. Such level of structural detail is inaccessible from standard small angle scattering measurements. Our results call for further exploration of ultra-wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements for biomacromolecules.

Polymer Size–Catalytic Activity Relationships in Solution by Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy

Measuring the catalytic activity of specific sizes of polymers with active catalysts in solution is typically challenging, due to limited instrument detection sensitivity and/or dynamic range. Here, a fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) method is developed to determine the catalytic activity of living polymers of a specific apparent size in solution. Deviation from a single-component FCS data fitting, as assessed by χ2, is also introduced and developed as a “speciation index”—a method to evaluate and track changes in the relative amount of distinct polymer sizes with reaction progress. These methods are enabled by incorporating a selectively reactive fluorescent monomer into growing polydicyclopentadiene or polynorbornene during ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Compared to polynorbornene, data showed that catalysts in aggregates of polyDCPD retained higher activity for longer—outcomes not directly inferable from simple diffusional-access predictions. Here, the ability to assign catalytic activity to polymers of specific sizes, and then to determine how this activity evolves with reaction progress, support long-term goals in the development and measurement of nano-objects that possess size-dependent catalytic activity.

Solution–Processable Thermally Crosslinked Organic Radical Polymer Battery Cathodes

Organic radical polymers are promising cathode materials for next-generation batteries because of their rapid charge transfer and high cycling stability. However, these organic polymer electrodes gradually dissolve in the electrolyte, resulting in capacity fade. Several crosslinking methods have been developed to improve the performance of these electrodes, but they are either not compatible with carbon additives or compromise the solution processability of the electrodes. A one-step post-synthetic, carbon-compatible crosslinking method was developed to effectively crosslink an organic polymer electrode and allow for easy solution processing. The highest electrode capacity of 104 mAh g –1 (vs. a theoretical capacity of 111 mAh g –1 ) is achieved by introducing 1 mol % of the crosslinker, whereas the highest capacity retention (99.6 %) is obtained with 3 mol % crosslinker. In addition, mass transfer was observed in situ by using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. Furthermore, these results may guide future electrode design toward fast-charging and high-capacity organic electrodes.

Solution structure for an Encephalitozoon cuniculi adrenodoxin-like protein in the oxidized state

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a unicellular, obligate intracellular eukaryotic parasite in the Microsporidia family and one of the agents responsible for microsporidosis infections in humans. Like most Microsporidia, the genome of E. cuniculi is markedly reduced and the organism contains mitochondria-like organelles called mitosomes instead of mitochondria. Here we report the solution NMR structure for a protein physically associated with mitosome-like organelles in E. cuniculi, the 128-residue, adrenodoxin-like protein Ec-Adx (UniProt ID Q8SV19) in the [2Fe-2S] ferredoxin superfamily. Oxidized Ec-Adx contains a mixed four-strand β-sheet, β2-β1-β4-β3 (↓↑↑↓), loosely encircled by three α-helices and two 310-helices. This fold is similar to the structure observed in other adrenodoxin and adrenodoxin-like proteins except for the absence of a fifth anti-parallel β-strand next to β3 and the position of α3. Cross peaks are missing or cannot be unambiguously assigned for 20 amide resonances in the 1 H- 15 N HSQC spectrum of Ec-Adx. These missing residues are clustered primarily in two regions, G48-V61 and L94-L98, containing the four cysteine residues predicted to ligate the paramagnetic [2Fe-2S] cluster. Missing amide resonances in 1 H- 15 N HSQC spectra are detrimental to NMR-based solution structure calculations because 1 H- 1 H NOE restraints are absent (glass half-empty) and this may account for the absent β-strand (β5) and the position of α3 in oxidized Ec-Adx. On the other hand, the missing amide resonances unambiguously identify the presence, and immediate environment, of the paramagnetic [2Fe-2S] cluster in oxidized Ec-Adx (glass half-full).
