Light sources used for solar simulation testing in terms of operational characteristics and effect of different spectral irradiance characteristics on thermal control coatings
A series of optical and X-ray observations of Sco X-1 and Cyg X-2 by UHURU satellite is reported. Results for Sco X-1 show a definite correlation between optical and X-ray intensity and thus indicate a common emitting region with the source being quiet and having no short term fluctuations bigger than 10%. Spectra reveal the presence of a high excitation complex at wavelength 4650 due to N III-C III. Spectra of a faint 15-mag red object NW of the radio position indicate that Cyg X-1 is associated with a bright B supergiant star. The flux from the edges of the Cygnus Loop in the coronal line at wavelength 5303 was measured to be less than five times ten to the minus nine power erg/sq cm/sterad/sec (0.017 R) in a 3-A band centered on the line. This indicates substantial broadening of the line profile by mass motion or that the temperature is somewhat higher than the present estimate from X-ray data.
Use of a hollow-cathode light source to produce the vacuum-ultraviolet spectrum of B I. One transition is resolved, and four transitions have been remeasured to a higher accuracy than previously because of the sharper lines emitted by the hollow-cathode light source. A revised value for one transition term results from these measurements.-
A systematic evaluation has been made of the principal optical properties of paraboloid-hyperboloid X-ray telescopes using a ray-tracing procedure. It has been found that the results obtained for resolution, focal plane curvature, and finite source distance effects may be approximated in terms of the design parameters by simple empirical formulas.
Description of a general method for inferring, from the line emission of an optically thin medium, the physical state of a gas along the column in a line of sight. The method is devised for applications to astronomy, especially for studies of the solar corona, the chromosphere-corona transition region, planetary nebulae, and other optically thin sources. A unique specification is found in terms of a bivariate distribution function describing the partitioning of matter in a gas over density and temperature. It is shown that, given sufficient observational data, it is in principle possible to determine both this bivariate distribution function and the chemical composition. The formulation for a situation encountered in the solar corona illustrates the application of the method.
The direct-coupled (DC) mode of detector operation is evaluated for use in a facsimile camera. Photodiode-preamplifier sensitivity is described in terms of photodiode responsivity and possible noise sources resulting from the photodiode and preamplifier. Responsivity and noise limitations are experimentally verified and used to predict photodiode-preamplifier sensitivity under a wide range of operating conditions. Results demonstrate that the DC mode offers advantages in sensitivity and reduced mechanical complexity for facsimile cameras over the more common technique of chopping the radiation and ac amplifying the resultant signal.
Analysis of the X-ray data for the extended sources in Coma, Perseus, and Virgo in terms of an isothermal gas-sphere model emitting thermal-bremsstrahlung radiation. It is found that the gas distribution is somewhat less centrally condensed than the galaxies, and that the gas mass is generally a small fraction of the binding mass of each cluster. In the case of the Coma cluster, approximately one-eighth of the binding mass (with an uncertainty of about 50%) may be in the form of hot gas at 100,000,000 K if H sub zero = 50 km/sec/Mpc.
Results of measurements of the differential counting rate spectra due to atmospheric gamma rays as a function of altitude to 3.6 g/sq cm over Texas. Two gain settings and a 128-channel pulse height analyzer were used to cover the range from 0.2 to 10 MeV. The detector was a 7.6 x 7.6 cm NaI crystal, which was surrounded on five sides by a 2-cm-thick plastic anticoincidence shield for charged particle rejection. The system had a nearly isotropic response to photons above 0.2 MeV. The spectrum at ceiling appeared as a steep continuum with a power-law index of about 1.4. The only obvious feature was the 0.51-MeV positron annihilation line. The spectral shape was independent for depths less than 20 g/sq cm, the absolute intensity varying in proportion to the intensity of the cosmic ray secondary charged particles. Also, at depths less than 30 g/sq cm the observed flux variation with altitude can be described in terms of an empirical depth-dependent source function.
The positional analysis of solar bursts at meter and decameter wavelengths observed during the period from July 31 to Aug. 7, 1972 is presented. Most of the activity during this period was associated with the active regions McMath 11976 and 11970. Except near the central meridian passage of region 11976, two regions of continuum emission were observed - one a relatively smooth continuum and the other a continuum superimposed with many type III emissions and other fine structure. It seems possible to interpret these continua in terms of plasma waves originating from two sources located at different heights or with different electron density gradients. The angular size of type III sources seems to increase with decreasing frequency. This implies that the open field lines along which the type III electrons travel have larger angular extent at greater heights.
A theory is developed for evaluating the normal impedance of an orifice connecting a cylindrical cavity to a flow duct. The impedance of a piston velocity source at the orifice is calculated in terms of the cavity modes which are modified by the presence of a vortex flow. The strength of the vortex is related to the mean flow in the duct. Results are presented showing the variation of the normal impedance spectrum with the cavity vortex. The trends of these variations are confirmed by comparison with measurements.
Two projections of future hydrogen demand, based on the Ford technical fix and the Westinghouse nuclear electric economy energy supply and demand scenarios, are analyzed. It is suggested that hydrogen use will increase during the remainder of this century by at least a factor of five, and perhaps by a factor of twenty. Primary energy sources for producing hydrogen are discussed in terms of the transition from low to high demand for hydrogen.
Preliminary steps have been taken in a joint high-priority project between NASA and the European Space Agency, whereby a Solar Electric Propulsion System (SEPS), using ion drive of a 25-30 kilowatt power level, will be utilized for the first time, as part of the Space Transportation System, in powering a probe to be deployed toward Halley's comet in 1985 and a separate spacecraft which will rendezvous with the Temple 2 comet in 1988 and study it for one year. Unlike ballistically-launched vehicles, an unprecedented long-term interaction between the SEPS, the primary source of power and attitude control, and the spacecraft, responsible for data handling (at a rate of 10-120 kilobits per second), and command and telecommunications to earth (requiring capabilities at both X- and S-band frequencies, for dual-frequency navigational tracking), is required, as mission phases alternate between powered flight and science data-taking. Different design sensitivities are presented graphically.
The pyroelectric property of triglycine sulfate and its application in the detection of infrared radiation are described. The detectivities of pyroelectric detectors and other types of infrared detectors are compared. The thermal response of a pyroelectric detector element and the resulting electrical response are derived in terms of the material parameters. The noise sources which limit the sensitivity of pyroelectric detectors are described, and the noise equivalent power for each noise source is given as a function of frequency and detector area.
Unlike their synchronized counterparts, redundant channels in an asynchronous flight system can, under no-fault conditions, exhibit cross-channel data disparities. Sources of these errors are examined in terms of the general, individual functions of the flight control and navigation application in the asynchronous digital environment. The effects of asynchronism on trajectory programmers, dynamic control algorithms and data reconstruction processes are examined in terms of data skews, data latencies, and clock rate uncertainties. An example is presented in which time corrections are applied to reduce the data disparities. Practical limitations of the approach of the example are discussed.
Observations are reviewed which indicate that hard X-rays during the impulsive phase of a flare typically start with a primarily nonthermal phase which undergoes a transition to a primarily thermal phase as the flare progresses. Recent theoretical work on the modified two-stream instability as an efficient electron accelerator and modeling of thermal hard X-ray sources is considered. A scenario which is termed the dissipative thermal model is proposed to explain the observations. Fast tearing modes occurring in a loop give rise to cross-field ion motion. This in turn excites the modified two-stream instability which converts about 50 percent of the ion energy into accelerated electrons along the loop as long as the plasma beta is less than 0.3. These electrons impact the chromosphere and boil off a part of it which rises up the loop. This density increase coupled with the temperature increase due to tearing causes the beta to increase beyond 0.3 and efficient electron acceleration ceases. This leads to the primarily thermal phase.
A wind profile radar demonstration project was sponsored by the Space Transportation System (STS) Program Office to study the feasibility of incorporating continuous, high time resolution radar wind data into STS operations. This project required wind profile radars to be deployed in the vicinity of the Shuttle launch site into an environment quite unlike typical VHF profiler sites. Two 50 MHz radars were operated at the Kennedy Space Center in environments that were noisy in terms of RFI, large stationary ground clutter sources, non-stationary clutter sources, and heavy local aircraft traffic. Processing compensation for these operational constraints magnified design limitations of the research-level radars used in the demonstration. This report addresses the importance of system design for unique or particular applications with reference to finite radiation patterns, zero-Doppler processing, radar frequency, and beam pointing.
Sound transmission through gases in an enclosure is considered. Analytical results are given in terms of geometrical parameters, wave numbers, and source type for simple model problems, and are compared with data obtained by Haran (1983). It is concluded that density measurements can be made in a gas contained in an enclosure by measuring the sound pressure level at a receiver located near a dipole source driven at a constant velocity amplitude at low frequencies.
A visible lightcurve of Comet Levy obtained with the IUE Fine Error Sensor has revealed short-term coma variability. A production-rate source function is derivable from these data which implies a nucleus exhibiting hemispherically asymmetric activity. The ratio of gas-to-dust-production rates is also noted to exhibit asymmetry. The low dust-outflow velocity derived from observations, at about 200 m/sec, indicates a distribution that is rich in large, 3-10 micron particles.
