Student and Post Doctoral Support for the 8th Workshop on Nanotube Optics and Nanospectroscopy (Final Technical Report)

This project provided financial assistance for 20 postdoctoral and graduate students to attend the 8th Workshop on Nanotube Optics and Nanospectroscopy (WONTON 2022). The WONTON 2022 workshop was held in-person in Madison, Wisconsin (USA) from July 24th to 28th, 2022, and the organizers were Dr. Michael Arnold of the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Dr. Jeffrey Blackburn of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The funding support was specifically used to defray the registration costs of 5 postdoctoral attendees and 15 graduate students, who each participated directly in the meeting by presenting a contributed talk or poster.

Post-growth Recrystallization by Halides for High Throughput CIGS Photovoltaics

The objective of this project in broad terms was to address the capital equipment expense associated with Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) as a material for photovoltaic devices. This project has demonstrated a new method for processing CIGS using metal halides to recrystallize and enhance the quality of the final materials. A wide spectrum of metal halides were examined. Of these Cu and In chlorides and AgBr were found to be most effective; and, of these, AgBr was found to produce exemplary results. Cu and In chlorides were found to produce undesirable changes in film composition. The project demonstrated over 16% efficiency in a CIGS device deposited at 10x the standard rate of ~1 μm/hr and with a >100°C reduction in maximum temperature to 450°C. The entire deposition of the absorber layer including the recrystallization step required only 15 minutes, which is a 4x decrease in processing time.

Enterprise Risks for Scientific Software in the Post Exascale Era

The Department of Energy’s Office of Science’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) Office hosts three high performance computing Facilities and one high performance networking Facility. ASCR’s Facilities Division and these four Facilities established a joint working group to address the most severe threats to the software capabilities that can prevent the Facilities from supporting a diverse array of mission critical scientific research carried out by thousands of researchers from national labs, academia, and industry. This report outlines the risk categories, threat matrix calculations, and number of risks in each of the categories along with the threat levels. Two categories—programming environment/tools and system software—account for 13 out of the 20 risks encountered in the risk register. A significant risk to ASCR’s software ecosystem also arises from the possible loss of personnel and expertise past the end of the exascale computing project. The working group recommends that the software enterprise risks are reevaluated regularly, and are considered in future decision making regarding system acquisition, knowledge sharing, partnership development, and strategic planning

Prediction of the influence of strain magnitude and strain path on the resulting microstructure and post-forming mechanical behavior of RA containing high formability steels

In third generation advanced high strength steels (AHSS) there is considerable potential to alter the transformation characteristics through variation of process parameters and through changes in chemical composition. This proposal aims to utilize this known phenomenon to develop microstructure-based transformation models to predict austenite stability as a function of chemical composition, strain level, deformation mode. The ultimate intent is to predict microstructure and performance during room temperature forming to produce automotive structural components with superior strength and failure resistance.
