$\mathrm{T}$ransient $\mathrm{CHI}$ System Design Studies for $\mathrm{P}$ EGASUS -$\mathrm{III}$

We report transient coaxial helicity injection (transient CHI), first developed on the Helicity Injected Torus-II (HIT-II) and later on the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) for implementing solenoid-free plasma current startup capability in a spherical tokamak (ST), is now planned to be tested on the Pegasus-III ST using a novel double-biased configuration. Such a configuration is likely needed for transient CHI deployment in a reactor. The transient CHI system optimization will be studied on Pegasus-III to enable startup toroidal persisting currents at the limits permitted by the external poloidal field coils. A transient CHI discharge is generated by driving injector current along magnetic field lines that connect the inner and outer divertor plates on one end of the ST. Simulations using the Tokamak Simulation Code are used to assess the transient CHI toroidal current generation potential and electrode gap location on the Pegasus-III. While past transient CHI systems have used high-voltage, oil-filled capacitors for driving the injector current, for improved safety, Pegasus-III will use a high-current capacitor bank based on low-voltage electrolytic capacitors. The designed and fabricated system is capable of over 32 kA. The modular design features permit the system to be upgraded to higher currents, as needed, to meet the future needs of the Pegasus-III facility.

Chain dynamics of alternating polymers P(C n EG 4 )

Alternating or sequence defined polymers attract the attention of an increasing number of researchers recently. Due to their different blocks, they are very customizable and material properties can be tuned. In this publication, we present dynamical studies with focus on polymer dynamics, investigated by rheology and fast field cycling (FFC) NMR. The molecular weight dependencies of the relaxation time and zero-shear viscosity could hint to entanglement effects; however, the spectral shape of the viscoelastic data resembles the polymer dynamics of unentangled melts. Furthermore, taking both techniques into account, i.e. rheology and FFC NMR leads to the conclusion that the relaxation spectra of the alternating polymer are similar to those of linear polymers.

Regional seismic velocity changes following the 2019 M w 7.1 Ridgecrest, California earthquake from autocorrelations and P / S converted waves

SUMMARY We examine regional transient changes of seismic velocities generated by the 2019 Mw 7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake in California, using autocorrelations of moving time windows in continuous waveforms recorded at regional stations. We focus on traveltime differences in a prominent phase generated by an interface around 2 km depth, associated with transmitted Pp waves and converted Ps waves from the ongoing microseismicity. Synthetic tests demonstrate the feasibility of the method for monitoring seismic velocity changes. Taking advantage of the numerous aftershocks in the early period following the main shock, we obtain a temporal resolution of velocity changes up to 20 min in the early post-main-shock period. The results reveal regional coseismic velocity drops in the top 1–3 km with an average value of ∼2 per cent over distances up to 100 km from the Ridgecrest event. These average velocity drops are likely dominated by larger changes in the shallow materials and are followed by rapid recoveries on timescales of days. Around the north end of the Ridgecrest rupture and the nearby Coso geothermal region, the observed coseismic velocity drops are up to ∼8 per cent. The method allows monitoring temporal changes of seismic velocities with high temporal resolution, fast computation and precise spatial mapping of changes. The results suggest that significant temporal changes of seismic velocities of shallow materials are commonly generated on a regional scale by large events.

Discovery of multiple p-mode pulsation frequencies in the roAp star, HD 86181

ABSTRACT We report the frequency analysis of a known roAp star, HD 86181 (TIC 469246567), with new inferences from Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data. We derive the rotation frequency to be νrot = 0.48753 ± 0.00001 d−1. The pulsation frequency spectrum is rich, consisting of two doublets and one quintuplet, which we interpret to be oblique pulsation multiplets from consecutive, high-overtone dipole, quadrupole, and dipole modes. The central frequency of the quintuplet is 232.7701 d−1 (2.694 mHz). The phases of the sidelobes, the pulsation phase modulation, and a spherical harmonic decomposition all show that the quadrupole mode is distorted. Following the oblique pulsator model, we calculate the rotation inclination, i, and magnetic obliquity, β, of this star, which provide detailed information about the pulsation geometry. The i and β derived from the best fit of the pulsation amplitude and phase modulation to a theoretical model, including the magnetic field effect, slightly differ from those calculated for a pure quadrupole, indicating the contributions from ℓ = 4, 6, 8,... are small. Non-adiabatic models with different envelope convection conditions and physics configurations were considered for this star. It is shown that models with envelope convection almost fully suppressed can explain the excitation at the observed pulsation frequencies.

Thermoelectric transport of the half-filled lowest Landau level in a p -type Ge/SiGe heterostructure

In this work, we investigate the thermoelectric transport properties of the half-filled lowest Landau level v = 1 / 2 in a gated two-dimensional hole system in a strained Ge/SiGe heterostructure. The electron-diffusion dominated regime is achieved below 600 mK, where the diffusion thermopower S x x d at v = 1 / 2 shows a linear temperature dependence. In contrast, the diffusion-dominated Nernst signal S x y d of v = 1 / 2 is found to approach zero, which is independent of the measurement configuration (sweeping magnetic field at a fixed hole density or sweeping the density by a gate at a fixed magnetic field).

First-order magnetic phase transition in P r 2 In with negligible thermomagnetic hysteresis

Magnetic first-order phase transitions are key for the emergence of functionalities of fundamental and applied significance, including magnetic shape memory as well as magnetostrictive and magnetocaloric effects. Such transitions are usually associated with thermomagnetic hysteresis. In this paper we report the observation of a firstorder transition in Pr 2 In from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic state at $T_C$ = 57K without a detectable thermomagnetic hysteresis, which is also accompanied by a large magnetocaloric effect. The peculiar electronic structure of Pr2In exhibiting a large density of states near the Fermi energy explains the highly responsive magnetic behavior of the material. The magnetic properties of Pr 2 In are reported, including observation of another (second-order) magnetic transition at 35 K.

Scanning ultrafast electron microscopy reveals photovoltage dynamics at a deeply buried $p^- \mathrm{Si/SiO_2}$ interface

The understanding and control of charge carrier interactions with defects at buried insulator/semiconductor interfaces is essential for achieving optimum performance in modern electronics. In this work, we report on the use of scanning ultrafast electron microscopy (SUEM) to remotely probe the dynamics of excited carriers at a Si surface buried below a thick thermal oxide. Our measurements illustrate a previously unidentified SUEM contrast mechanism, whereby optical modulation of the space-charge field in the semiconductor modulates the electric field in the thick oxide, thus affecting its secondary electron yield. By analyzing the SUEM contrast as a function of time and laser fluence we demonstrate the diffusion mediated capture of excited carriers by interfacial traps.

Covariant spectator theory of n p scattering: Deuteron form factors

The deuteron form factors are calculated using two model wave functions obtained from the 2007 CST high precision fits to $np$ scattering data. Included in the calculation are a new class of isoscalar $np$ interaction currents which are automatically generated by the nuclear force model used in these fits. If the nuclear model WJC2 is used, a precision fit ($\chi^2$/datum $\eqsim1$) to the Sick Global Analysis (GA) of all $ed$ elastic scattering data can be obtained by adjusting the unknown off-shell nucleon form factors $F_3(Q^2)$ (discussed before) and $F_4(Q^2)$ (introduced in this paper), and predicting the high $Q^2$ behavior of the neutron charge form factor $G_{En}(Q^2)$ well beyond the region where it has been measured directly. Relativistic corrections, isoscalar interaction currents, and off-shell effects are defined, discussed, and their size displayed. A rationale for extending $ed$ elastic scattering measurements to higher $Q^2$ is presented.
