A binocular contribution to the production of optokinetic nystagmus in normal and stereoblind subjects

Viewing a large patterned field moving in one direction produces a regular pattern of eye movements known as optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). Fox et al. (1978) showed that the mechanism producing OKN can utilize purely binocular or 'cyclopean' input. Experiments reported confirm that finding and extend it to demonstrate that the binocularity of this mechanism is not disrupted in subjects who lack stereopsis. This result indicates that there exists more than one binocular process in the visual system.

Load compensating reactions to perturbations at wrist joint in normal man

The electromyographic responses to step torque loads were studied in flexors and extensors at the human wrist. Based on temporal bursting patterns and functional behavior, the response was divided into four temporal components. Two early components, the myotatic (30-60 ms) late myotatic (60-120 ms) appears to be reflex response. The third postmyotatic component (120-200 ms) appear to be a triggered reaction, preceeding the fourth, stabilizing component (200-400 ms). A comparison of response at the wrist with similar data at the ankle provides the basis for a generalized classification of the response in various muscles to torque step perturbations.

Observations of normal main-sequence and giant B stars

When interpreting the continuous and line spectra of B stars, it is helpful to think in terms of a model consisting of a photosphere and a mantle which is the outer part of the atmosphere where the effects of nonradiative heating are seen. A survey of the spectra of these stars shows that conditions in the photosphere determine most of what is seen, and in the case of most B stars, the presence of the mantle can be detected only by a special effort. The shape of the visible continuum spectrum and the shape and absolute value of the UV continuous spectrum as determined from low resolution spectra are discussed. Effective temperature for B stars in the main sequence, including corrections for interstellar extinction and bolometric corrections are explored. The major constituents of B-type spectra, variation of the strength of line along the main sequence band, the UV spectra, UV line blocking, intrinsic colors, and variations in light and spectra are also examined.

Reissner's membrane and the spiral ligament in normal rats and those treated with ethacrynic acid

A description is presented of recent ultrastructural findings in Reissner's membrane and the spiral ligament in rats treated daily with ethacrynic acid during the 2nd and 3rd weeks of postnatal life, a period of final maturation of the inner ear and its fluids. A distension of Reissner's membrane in every cochlear turn, indicative of mild endolymphatic hydrops, was found to occur in animals that received a higher dose of ethacrynic acid. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of Reissner's membrane showed increased electron density after treatment with ethacrynic acid. This increase was most pronounced in animals treated with a greater quantity of the drug. The epithelial cells had similar ultracellular features throughout except that the cells were much thinner in the region of maximal distension.

Models for far-infrared emission from normal galaxies

It is shown that the presence of grains distributed throughout either disk or spherical galaxies can lead to detectable far-infrared sources. In particular, an elliptical such as NGC 4278 with an appreciable amount of neutral gas should be easily detectable with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) if it has a dust-to-gas ratio similar to the value in the solar neighborhood. A disk should be detectable at 100 Mpc with IRAS. Also, disks may emit most of their energy longward of 100 microns; this could be important for estimating the mass-to-light ratios of these galaxies.

Determining Normal-Distribution Tolerance Bounds Graphically

Graphical method requires calculations and table lookup. Distribution established from only three points: mean upper and lower confidence bounds and lower confidence bound of standard deviation. Method requires only few calculations with simple equations. Graphical procedure establishes best-fit line for measured data and bounds for selected confidence level and any distribution percentile.

Development of a 1m-normal-incidence-EUV-Telescope

A brief description is given of the 1m-EUV-Telescope and its focal plane instrumentation, namely an EUV spectrometer and six EUV/FUV photometers. The telescope is scheduled for launch on an Aries rocket on June 17, 1982. The principal goals are the white dwarf HZ43 and a photometric scan across the sky in an area of the sky where 21 cm line observations reveal a steep density gradient. The optical bench of the telescope is a cylinder made of a graphite epoxy compound. Despite its low specific weight, the bench shows an excellent mechanical performance, with an elasticity modulus of approximately 70,000 N/cu mm. It is pointed out that by carefully combining layers with different winding angles of the carbon fiber, the thermal expansion along the cylinder axis is almost negligible, even under severe thermal loads

The effect of a normal shock on the aeroelastic stability of a panel

The effect of a standing shock wave on the static and dynamic aeroelastic stability of a flexible panel is investigated using a linear structural and aerodynamic theoretical model. It is found that the shock is generally stabilizing. The lowest critical dynamic pressures are associated with shock positions downstream from the panel, where the panel is uninfluenced by the shock.

Normalizing VFO Frequency by Non-Powr-of-2 Division

PLL oscillator with VFO operating at one frequency yields any one of four frequencies by dividing by 4, 7, 21, or 52.5. Radiation resistant phase-locked loop oscillator generates output frequency 32 times any 1 or 4 specific input reference frequencies constructed without increasing component count over that of conventional circuit.

Empirical orthogonal functions and normal modes

An attempt to provide physical insight into the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) representation of data fields by the study of fields generated by linear stochastic models is presented in this paper. In a large class of these models, the EOFs at individual Fourier frequencies coincide with the orthogonal mechanical modes of the system - provided they exist. The precise mathematical criteria for this coincidence are derived and a physical interpretation is provided. A scheme possibly useful in forecasting is formally constructed for representing any stochastic field by a linear Hermitian model forced by noise.

Hybrid approach to steady transonic normal-shock compressible laminar boundary-layer interactions over airfoils

A simulation of steady transonic viscous-inviscid interactions through a combination of zonal solution methods (involving different equation sets and numerical regions for various flow regions) is used in an investigation of a fluid mechanics problem in which the pressure distribution is determined by the interaction between transonic inviscid flow and an inner laminar viscous layer. The results obtained are in good agreement with laminar experimental data. Both attached and separated boundary layer flows are considered for either weak or strong interactions.

A simple derivation of the formula to calculate synthetic long-period seismograms in a heterogeneous earth by normal mode summation

A simple modification of Gilbert's formula to account for slight lateral heterogeneity of the earth leads to a convenient formula to calculate synthetic long period seismograms. Partial derivatives are easily calculated, thus the formula is suitable for direct inversion of seismograms for lateral heterogeneity of the earth. Previously announced in STAR as N83-29893
