High-voltage insulators having multiple materials

High-voltage insulators are disclosed that are capable of handling diverse requirements, such as providing high standoff voltages, high temperature cycling, and the ability to withstand flexural stress. One high-voltage insulator includes a first piece formed from a first material, a second piece formed from a second material, and an interface section where the first piece contacts with and forms a seal with the second piece. The interface includes a first groove located that accommodates a first gasket, sets of matching threads on the first and second pieces. The interface section further accommodates a second gasket. In this multi-piece high-voltage insulator, the first material can have a first set of flexural, heat resistance, and electrical standoff characteristics suitable for a first environment, and the second material can have a second set of flexural, heat resistance and electrical standoff characteristics suitable for a second environment.

More Than Recycling: The Importance of Multiple Metrics for a Circular Economy for PV in the Energy Transition

Energy transition to carbon-free electricity is a crucial pillar of the Circular Economy. Renewable energy reduces environmental impacts and decarbonizes the production of other goods. But, manufacturing renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic (PV) modules, require energy inputs that are currently carbon intensive. So, how do we decarbonize and circularize these critical technologies to achieve a sustainable energy transition? This work proposes that effective capacity-the installed capacity accounting for degradation rates and failures-is a critical metric to evaluate renewable energy technologies on the path toward circular economy and energy transitions. Our analyses also emphasize the importance of examining a suite of metrics incorporating mass and energy flows to identify potential tradeoffs and inform design or lifecycle management decisions holistically.

Droop Control-Based Dispatch of an Islanded Microgrid With Multiple Grid-Forming Sources

Before rotating, fossil fuel-based, synchronous generators (SGs) are phased out, in line with renewable generation goals, grid-forming (GFM) inverters are expected to parallel SGs. Primary droop control allows GFM inverters to share power without communication; however, it is necessary to dispatch GFM inverters and/or SGs with the desired output power for better energy management (e.g., one GFM inverter needs to charge the battery due to a low state of charge). Therefore, this paper develops an analytic approach to dispatching GFM inverters and SGs with the desired output power by shifting the droop intercept up/down while maintaining the same frequency operating point for improved transient stability. This concept is demonstrated through a pure hardware setup with two off-the-shelf inverters and one diesel generator under an islanded microgrid, and we provide insight on the real-world implementation of the proposed concept.

Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks for Constraining Cosmological Parameters Across Multiple Data Sets

Deep learning models have been shown to outperform methods that rely on summary statistics, like the power spectrum, in extracting information from complex cosmological data sets. However, due to differences in the subgrid physics implementation and numerical approximations across different simulation suites, models trained on data from one cosmological simulation show a drop in performance when tested on another. Similarly, models trained on any of the simulations would also likely experience a drop in performance when applied to observational data. Training on data from two different suites of the CAMELS hydrodynamic cosmological simulations, we examine the generalization capabilities of Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks (DA-GNNs). By utilizing GNNs, we capitalize on their capacity to capture structured scale-free cosmological information from galaxy distributions. Moreover, by including unsupervised domain adaptation via Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD), we enable our models to extract domain-invariant features. We demonstrate that DA-GNN achieves higher accuracy and robustness on cross-dataset tasks (up to $28\%$ better relative error and up to almost an order of magnitude better $\chi^2$). Using data visualizations, we show the effects of domain adaptation on proper latent space data alignment. This shows that DA-GNNs are a promising method for extracting domain-independent cosmological information, a vital step toward robust deep learning for real cosmic survey data.

Two-point and multiple-point spot heating and cooling

Apparatus and methods for producing thermal comfort using two point or multipoint heating or cooling that is applied to portion of a human body part to produce a warm or cool sensation over a larger area than that where the heating or cooling is directly applied. The body is induced to heat or cool itself by adjusting its neutral temperature setpoints. Increased warming perception from two-point, multipoint, and switching point stimulation causes downward adaptation in the neutral skin temperature of the user. Because spot heating and cooling sources operate at higher temperature differences from the skin than do area sources, they create a stronger perceived thermal sensation for the same power consumption. Point heating or cooling, rather than whole-area heating, can result in power savings and cost savings while improving occupant comfort.

Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks for Constraining Cosmological Parameters Across Multiple Data Sets

State of the art astronomical simulations have provided datasets which enabled the training of novel deep learning techniques for constraining cosmological parameters. However, differences in subgrid physics implementation and numerical approximations among simulation suites lead to differences in simulated datasets, which pose a hard challenge when trying to generalize across diverse data domains and ultimately when applying models to observational data. Recent work reveals deep learning algorithms are able to extract more information from complex cosmological simulations than summary statistics like power spectra. We introduce Domain Adaptive Graph Neural Networks (DA-GNNs), trained on CAMELS data, inspired by CosmoGraphNet (Villanueva-Domingo et al 2023). By utilizing GNNs, we can capitalize on their capacity to capture both astrophysical and topological features of galaxy distributions. Mixing these capabilities with domain adaptation techniques such as Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD), which enable extraction of domain-invariant features, our framework demonstrates enhanced accuracy and robustness. We present experimental results, including the alignment of distributions across domains through data visualization. These findings suggest that DA-GNNs are an efficient way of extracting domain independent cosmological information, a vital step toward robust deep learning for real cosmic survey data.

The system may have an implantable neuromodulator for generating electrical stimulation signals adapted to be applied to a desired region of a brain via an attached electrode array. An aggregator module may be used for collecting and aggregating electrical signals and transmitting the electrical signals to the neuromodulator. A control module may be used which is in communication with the aggregator module for controlling generation of the electrical signals and transmitting the electrical signals to the aggregator.

Comparisons of Nodal diffusion and whole-core transport methods for multiple cycles of a small Light water reacto

As part of a cooperative research and development agreement between the US department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Holtec International subsidiary SMR LLC, core simulator models of the SMR-160, a light water-cooled and -moderated, natural circulation, small modular reactor, were developed and compared. The model results indicate pin-by-pin power histories, critical boron concentration, and other key performance indicators useful for developing multi-cycle core loading patterns. One model uses industry standard nodal methods with a simple thermal-hydraulics solution, and the other uses an advanced deterministic neutronics solver with a coupled subchannel calculation. The goals of the comparison are to provide the reactor designer with a detailed and coupled core physics reference solution, inform the reactor designer of nodal model best practices based on the code-to-code comparison, and set up a workflow for performing subsequent detailed core simulator calculations. The results of this work will be used in the development of coupled neutronic, thermal hydraulic, and fuel performance models for advanced analysis of the SMR-160. (authors)
