Performance of the GPS package on Landsat-5

The Landsat-5 spacecraft, launched in March 1984, carries an experimental Global Positioning System Package (GPSPAC) as did Landsat-4 in 1982. The primary objective of this experiment was to characterize and improve the performance of GPSPAC as an onboard navigation tool. In order to validate the accuracy of GPSPAC orbit solutions, definitive Landsat-5 ephemerides, derived from ground based tracking data, were generated and compared with GPSPAC estimates. This paper presents the results of such analysis as well as a summary of GPSPAC operation on Landsat-5. A description of the Landsat-5 spacecraft, GPSPAC and its navigation algorithms are also included.

Applications of a hand-held GPS receiver in South American rain forests

A hand-held Global Positioning System receiver was used to determine the precise locations of villages, houses, gardens, and other cultural and environmental features in poorly mapped South American rain forests. The Magellan NAV 1000 unit profides extremely accurate latitude and longitude information, but determination of altitude is problematical. Overall, the receiver effectively allows anthropologists to obtain essential locational data useful for categorizing land uses, mapping tribal boundaries, and other applications in regions where environmental conditions are harsh and/or accessibility is difficult.

The Impact of Temporal Geopotential Variations on GPS

Lemoine et al. (2006) and Lemoine et al. (2010) showed that applying more detailed models of time-variable gravity (TVG) improved the quality of the altimeter satellite orbits (e.g. TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2). This modeling include application of atmospheric gravity derived from 6-hrly pressure fields obtained from the ECMWF and annual gravity variations to degree & order 20x20 in spherical harmonics derived from GRACE data. This approach allowed the development of a consistent geophysical model for application to altimeter satellite orbit determination from 1993 to 2011. In addition, we have also evaluated the impact of TVG modeling on the POD of Jason-1 and Jason-2 by application of a weekly degree & order four gravity coefficient time series developed using data from ten SLR & DORIS-tracked satellites from 1993 to 2011 (Lemoine et al., 2011).

GPS survey of the western Tien Shan

There were two major developments in 1994 in our collaborative GPS experiment in the Tien Shan of the Former Soviet Union (FSU). Both were motivated by our expectation that we will ultimately obtain better science at lower cost if we involve our colleagues in the FSU more deeply in (1) the collection and (2) the analysis of data. As an experimental test of the concept of having our local collaborators carry out the field work semi-autonomously, we sent 6 MIT receivers to the Tien Shan for a period of 3 months. To enable our collaborators to have the capability for data analysis, we provided computers for two data analysis centers and organized a two-week training session. This report emphasizes the rationale for deeper involvement of FSU scientists, describes the training sessions, discusses the data collection, and presents the results. We also discuss future plans. More detailed discussion of background, general scientific objectives, discussions with collaborators, and results for the campaigns in 1992 and 1993 have been given in previous reports.

Detection of Ocean Reflected GPS Signals: Theory and Experiment

A number of advanced applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS) have been proposed which use the signal reflected from a smooth ocean surface. The viability of these concepts hinges upon the ability to acquire and code track the reflected signal for an extended period of time over a variety of sea states. The analytical theory of specularly and diffusely reflected radio frequency radiation from a rough surface is reviewed. Experiments to demonstrate tracking of a reflected signal were performed on three aircraft flights over the Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The experimental hardware consisted of two of-the-shelf receivers configured so that one received the GPS signal in the conventional manner using a right hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna on top of the fuselage and the other could receive the reflected signal using a left hand circularly polarized (LHCP) antenna on the bottom of the fuselage. Three tests were performed on the data to verify that the signals received in the bottom antenna were viewed as sea surface reflections; Pseudorange double differences were compared against predicted geometric range double differences; Characteristics of a signal reflected from a random surface were observed in the carrier to noise ratio; Predicted specular points were plotted which demonstrate reflection only from wet areas. These tests indicated tracking of reflected signals for extended periods of time at altitudes of up to 5500 m and sporadic signal acquisition at higher altitudes. The duration of the continuous signal tracking was limited by the receiver's need to maintain carrier tracking.

VLBI-SLR Combination Solution Using GEODYN

We would like to generate a multi-technique solution combining all of the geodetic techniques (VLBI, SLR, GPS, and DORIS) using the same software and using the same a priori models. Here we use GEODYN software and consider only the VLBI-SLR combination. Here we report initial results of our work on the combination. We first performed solutions with GEODYN using only VLBI data and found that VLBI EOP solution results produced with GEODYN agree with results using CALC/SOLVE at the 1-sigma level. We then combined the VLBI normal equations in GEODYN with weekly SLR normal equations for the period 2007-2008. Agreement of estimated Earth orientation parameters with IERS C04 were not significantly different for the VLBI-only, SLR-only, and VLBI+SLR solutions

Terrestrial reference systems related to the TOPEX/Poseidon project

In the TOPEX/POSEIDON project, several satellite positioning systems, such as Laser, Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS), and Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) (on an experimental basis), will be used to track the satellite and to provide accurate orbits. Unfortunately, these systems will provide their dedicated tracking-station coordinates and the satellite orbits in different reference frames. Each technique will use, de facto, a different reference frame. In fact, even for the same technique, each group, depending on the hypothesis used in its computation, will use a different reference frame. This problem is not new for geodesists and can be overcome, in large part, but could create trouble for other scientists when they compare or combine different coordinate data sets. The main purpose of this investigation is to determine a consistent terrestrial system for TOPEX/POSEIDON in which all the tracking-station coordinates, all the orbit ephemerides, and all the other station coordinates of specific interest (such as tide gauges) could be expressed. Another issue of this investigation is the provision of reliable information concerning the relationships between all the possible reference frames of interest for th TOPEX/POSEIDON project. To be more explicit, we plan to provide the possible transformation formula between the TOPEX/POSEIDON terrestrial reference frame and the Laser, DORIS, GPS, and other internationally recognized frames such as the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF).
