A traverse gravimeter for the lunar surface

A semi-automatic, self-levelling lunar gravimeter was designed for the purpose of measuring gravity at predetermined stops along the route of a lunar rover vehicle to obtain a gravity profile. The traverse gravimeter is completely self-contained and is powered by an internal battery. The gravity sensor is a vibrating string accelerometer (VSA) which is enclosed in a precision oven. Gravity data are obtained by initiating a measurement. After the gravimeter has levelled, the VSA difference frequency is counted down and a gate is generated to enable a crystal-controlled clock to a BCD counter. The BCD counter stores the data which are a measurement of gravity. These data, displayed upon command by the astronaut, are transmitted by voice back to earth. It is expected that the accuracy of the gravimeter will be better than one milligal. Low power, light weight, reliability, and simplicity of operation are major considerations in the design of the gravimeter.

ESRO study program for a space experiment on gravitation theories

ESRO is considering a space experiment which is the definition phase. A more complete utilization of space techniques, leading to highly accurate acceleration measurements in a heliocentric spacecraft, together with an improved laser signal propagation method (using a space-borne atomic clock), could substantially increase the validity of the gravitational time delay test during solar conjunction. Preliminary investigations of the primary required techniques were carried out. These studies included an orbit analysis, investigation of drag-free techniques, and studies of the time measuring instrument. These studies were used to define the framework of a space experiment on gravitation theories. A preliminary feasibility study of the mission is being undertaken.

A 100,000 pulse height analyzer for use in High Energy Cosmic Ray Experiments (HECRE) on high altitude balloon flights

A description is given of a wide dynamic range pulse height analyzer system developed for use on High Energy Cosmic Ray Experiment (HECRE) Balloon Flights. A wide dynamic range of 100,000 is obtained by extending the range of a basic 1024 channel analyzer through the use of multiple ranges and range selection. The system described here contains four 100,000 pulse height analyzers. Each 100,000 pulse height analyzer consists of a group of cordwood welded modules mounted and interconnected on a printed circuit card. Four of these card assemblies, the required clock drive circuitry (discrete components mounted and interconnected on a separate card) and three input-output connectors are interconnected and mounted on the system board.

Handbook of operation and maintenance instructions for Model 5208A bit synchronizer unit

Electrical/mechanical characteristics, operation, theory of operation, parts list, and electrical diagrams for the model 5208A bit synchronizer unit are provided. The unit is capable of performing the functions of bit synchronization and signal conditioning on demodulated wave trains containing amplitude, frequency, and phase distortions, as well as additive noise. Operating frequencies in the 1 to 27 MHz bit rate range are accommodated through the use of discrete frequency plug-in subunits. The unit provides 0 and 180 degree clocks and either a single signal hard decision, or a three bit quantized soft decision data output.

The significance of the redshift rocket probe experiment to the theories of gravitation

Direct measurements of the effects of gravitation on time are discussed. Using the earth's gravity these measurements can now be made to 20 parts per million. At present, there is a 1% verification of the equivalence principle for clocks made over a 75-ft vertical distance by use of Mossbauer gamma ray emission and absorption. Measurements made to greater accuracy and spanning distances where appreciable curvature of the metric of spacetime will help verify the equivalence principle, a postulate upon which Einstein developed his General Theory of Relativity.

Mathematical models of the open magnetosphere - Application to dayside auroras.

Two static mathematical models of the open or Dungey model of the magnetosphere are constructed. The process of construction is similar to that for early closed magnetosphere models, such as the Taylor-Hones model. The first model in fact is simply an addition of an interplanetary field in arbitrary direction to a Taylor-Hones image dipole model. In order to preserve the shape of the magnetosphere at high latitudes, and to partially exclude the exterior field, another model is constructed with the magnetopause approximated by a diamagnetic sphere. We find that there are some interplanetary field lines connected to the earth for all orientations of the interplanetary field other than strictly northward, and that the maximum number of connected field lines occurs with a due southward field. For an average spiral hose angle of the interplanetary field, the dayside neutral point occurs on the magnetopause at about 10 o'clock local time. Dayside auroras, convection patterns, and other phenomena may exhibit symmetry about this local time. For a positive (negative) interplanetary field sector, energetic, anisotropic particle fluxes should have direct access to the northern (southern) polar caps, as is supported by many recent observations.

Laser altimeter for Apollo lunar orbit.

The function of the altimeter is to provide precise measurements of Apollo vehicle height above known positions on the lunar surface. A short duration light pulse from the laser is directed through a telescope in a narrow beam to the lunar surface. A portion of the light is reflected by the moon back to the altimeter where it is intercepted by a receiving telescope and relayed to a detector. The time from the moment when the light pulse leaves the laser until its return, which is measured with the aid of a quartz crystal controlled clock oscillator, is a measure for the altitude.

A wideband Gaussian noise generator utilizing simultaneously generated pn-sequences.

A digital system has been constructed for the generation of wideband Gaussian noise with a spectrum which is flat to within plus or minus 0.5 dB from 0 to 10 MHz. These characteristics are substantially better than those of commercially available analog noise generators, and are required in testing and simulation of wideband communications systems. The noise is generated by the analog summation of thirty essentially independent binary waveforms, clocked at 35 MHz, and low-pass filtered to 10 MHz.

Corkscrews and singularities in fruitflies - Resetting behavior of the circadian eclosion rhythm.

Description of experiments undertaken to define the phase-resetting behavior of the circadian rhythm of pupal eclosion in populations of fruitflies. An attempt is made to determine how and why the resetting response depends on the duration of a standard perturbation as well as on the time at which it is given. Plotting a three-dimensional graph of the measured emergence centroids vs the stimulus variables, the data are found to spiral up around a vertical rotation axis. Using a computer, a smooth surface, called the resetting surface, which approximately fits the helicoidal cloud of data points, is obtained and is shown to be best described as a vertical corkscrew linking together tilted planes. This corkscrew feature of the resetting surface is taken to indicate that there is an isolated perturbation following which there is either no circadian rhythm of emergence in the steady state, or one of unpredictable phase. A hypothesis concerning the clock dynamics underlying the eclosion rhythm is briefly sketched which encompasses the main features of known resetting data using single discrete pulses of any perturbing agent.

A gamma ray monitor for the OSO-7 spacecraft.

A NaI(T2) gamma ray spectrometer with a CsI(Na) charged particle and anti-Compton shield has been developed for the spacecraft. The spacecraft telemetry system employs a 800 Hz clock and reads data out on a basic 32-word (byte) Main Frame cycle. The data from the instrument include spectral data, X-ray data, and housekeeping data. The gamma ray pulses from the anode of the central detector flow through the front end electronics, where they are amplified by a charge sensitive preamplifier. The admission of the desired gamma ray into the data stream is controlled by a linear gate.

Measures of time in astronomy.

Astronomically-important measures of time are discussed with their definitions, their intended purposes, and areas of viability or obsolescence. Several different kinds of year are defined. Earth rotation time is described in terms of sidereal and solar time and in terms of universal time (UT) for which four different levels are defined corresponding to different approximations of 'uniform' time. The formal definition of ephemeris time, consisting of a defined rate and epoch, is discussed and some unorthodox criticisms are presented. Uses of broadcast time are noted. In the discussion of what measure of time should be used in astronomical applications, it is stated that, at present, all dynamical applications should use a measure of time based on atomic clock time.
