Final Report for ARPA-E LOCOMOTIVES Advanced Locomotive Technology and Rail Infrastructure Optimization System (ALTRIOS) Project

The Advanced Locomotive Technology and Rail Infrastructure Optimization System (ALTRIOS) is a unique, fully integrated, open-source software tool used to evaluate strategies for cost-effectively deploying advanced locomotive technologies and associated infrastructure. ALTRIOS simulates freight-demand-driven train scheduling, mainline meet-pass planning, locomotive dynamics, train dynamics, energy conversion efficiencies, and energy storage dynamics of line-haul train operations. Because new locomotives represent a significant long-term capital investment and new technologies must be thoroughly demonstrated before deployment, this tool provides guidance on the risk/reward trade-offs and operation integration of different technology rollout strategies. An open, integrated simulation tool is valuable for identifying future research needs and making decisions on technology development, routes, and train selection. This final report details the ALTRIOS software architecture, major modules and components, and data validation process. It demonstrates the software's utility through a 30-year rollout case study targeting high penetration of advanced powertrain technologies by 2050 for two BNSF Railway routes: loaded taconite ore trains from Hibbing, Minnesota, to Superior, Wisconsin, and mixed-freight trains from Superior to Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Time-resolved electrical potential pump – X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy probe developments for investigating dynamic processes occurring at electrochemical interfaces

Electrode–electrolyte interfaces are of critical importance in several fields, including renewable energy, corrosion, and environmental chemistry. However, investigating these interfaces under operational conditions poses considerable challenges due to the limitations of the instrumentation employed. While recent advancements in in situ and operando techniques have enhanced our comprehension of the steady-state properties of solid-liquid interfaces, the dynamic behaviors of these systems remain inadequately explored. This study introduces a time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique designed to capture transient reaction intermediates and charging dynamics at electrified interfaces. The presented proof-of-principle study demonstrates that electrochemical processes, represented by an equivalent electrical circuit (EEC) model, can be probed and understood using square wave voltage pulses of a potentiostat synchronized to the modified data acquisition of an XPS setup. This method offers a valuable alternative to traditional pump–probe techniques, facilitating the investigation of a broader range of electrochemical systems. A dedicated software package for analyzing time- and energy-resolved XPS with a focus on extracting parameters of the EEC is geared towards benchmarking different EECs in future real-world electrochemical experiments.

Analysis of phospholipids and triacylglycerols in intravenous lipid emulsions

Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) are used for parenteral nutrition, providing a vital source of essential fatty acids and concentrated energy for patients who are unable to absorb nutrients via the digestive track. They are commonly used to treat local and non-local anesthetic toxicity, and lipophilic drug overdose. ILE are composed of natural lipids, and the composition of these natural lipids can be varied based on their source. The lipids are susceptible to hydrolytic degradation with time, resulting various lipid degradation products such as Lysophosphatidylcholines (LPs), affecting the actual composition of nutrients in the formulation. As a result, the identification and quantification of lipid components, including degradation products, in ILEs are crucial in quality control. In this study, lipids from different batches of ILE Intralipid® 20%, were separated and identified using a UHPLC-ESI-QTOF system and SimLipid® high throughput lipid identification software. Out of 47 lipids identified, 34 were phospholipids (PLs) and the others were triacylglycerols (TAGs). Most of the phospholipids detected were phosphatidylcholines (PC) and Lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC). A total of 9 LPCs, 18 PCs, 6 phosphoethanolamines (PEs), and 1 sphingomyelin (SM) were identified. The LPCs concentration changed with the manufacturing date and storage time. Furthermore, this UHPLC method enabled the identification and quantification of lipids and their decomposition products in complex ILE emulsion mixtures on a single 20-minute chromatographic run.

Asymmetric errors

We present a procedure for handling asymmetric errors. Many results in particle physics are presented as values with different positive and negative errors, and there is no consistent procedure for handling them. We consider the difference between errors quoted, using pdfs and using likelihoods, and the difference between the rms spread of a measurement and the 68% central confidence region. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the possibilities, and software tools to enable their use.

Low cost, flexible, and distribution level universal grid analyser platform: designs and implementations

This study presents the designs and implementations of a distribution level open-universal grid analyser (Open-UGA) platform. The proposed Open-UGA platform consists of distribution-level phasor measurement units (PMUs), a standard signal generator, a router, and a server. Firstly, an overall introduction for the software, hardware, and server architectures of the Open-UGA platform is given. To give a detailed design, the software, hardware, server block diagrams, flowcharts, and printed circuit board photo of the Open-UGA platform are presented in detail. Then, four different types of distribution level PMU algorithms are introduced and implemented in the Open-UGA platform to verify the flexibility and reconfigurability. The flowcharts and functionalities of these four UGAs with different PMU algorithms are given as example implementations. Lastly, a performance comparison is conducted with both quantitative and illustrative results.

hIPPYlib-MUQ: A Bayesian Inference Software Framework for Integration of Data with Complex Predictive Models under Uncertainty

Bayesian inference provides a systematic framework for integration of data with mathematical models to quantify the uncertainty in the solution of the inverse problem. However, the solution of Bayesian inverse problems governed by complex forward models described by partial differential equations (PDEs) remains prohibitive with black-box Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. We present hIPPYlib-MUQ, an extensible and scalable software framework that contains implementations of state-of-the art algorithms aimed to overcome the challenges of high-dimensional, PDE-constrained Bayesian inverse problems. These algorithms accelerate MCMC sampling by exploiting the geometry and intrinsic low-dimensionality of parameter space via derivative information and low rank approximation. The software integrates two complementary open-source software packages, hIPPYlib and MUQ. hIPPYlib solves PDE-constrained inverse problems using automatically-generated adjoint-based derivatives, but it lacks full Bayesian capabilities. MUQ provides a spectrum of powerful Bayesian inversion models and algorithms, but expects forward models to come equipped with gradients and Hessians to permit large-scale solution. By combining these two complementary libraries, we created a robust, scalable, and efficient software framework that realizes the benefits of each and allows us to tackle complex large-scale Bayesian inverse problems across a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines. To illustrate the capabilities of hIPPYlib-MUQ, we present a comparison of a number of MCMC methods available in the integrated software on several high-dimensional Bayesian inverse problems. These include problems characterized by both linear and nonlinear PDEs, various noise models, and different parameter dimensions. The results demonstrate that large (~ 50×) speedups over conventional black box and gradient-based MCMC algorithms can be obtained by exploiting Hessian information (from the log-posterior), underscoring the power of the integrated hIPPYlib-MUQ framework.

A Reference Implementation for a Quantum Message Passing Interface

Practical applications of quantum computing are currently limited by the number of qubits that can be set with reasonable fidelities for each system. Therefore, a distributed quantum computing system with multiple quantum computers coherently connected is highly demanding. To realize the internode communication of quantum information, the software interface, Quantum Message Passing Interface (QMPI), leveraging the framework built for classical MPI but taking advantage of quantum teleportation to communicate between different quantum nodes was proposed. In this project, we develop the QMPI with point-to-point and collective operations in Qiskit and characterize its performance by demonstrating the application implementations. Moreover, we developed a new technique for optimizing collective communication of the distributed quantum programs with Multi-Controlled Toffoli gates. This technique beats the state-of-the-art in terms of fidelity and the number of remote EPR pairs consumed in both simulations and experiments.

Arranging computer architectures to create higher-performance controllers

Techniques for integrating microprocessors, array processors, and other intelligent devices in control systems are reviewed, with an emphasis on the (re)arrangement of components to form distributed or parallel processing systems. Consideration is given to the selection of the host microprocessor, increasing the power and/or memory capacity of the host, multitasking software for the host, array processors to reduce computation time, the allocation of real-time and non-real-time events to different computer subsystems, intelligent devices to share the computational burden for real-time events, and intelligent interfaces to increase communication speeds. The case of a helicopter vibration-suppression and stabilization controller is analyzed as an example, and significant improvements in computation and throughput rates are demonstrated.

Rule groupings: A software engineering approach towards verification of expert systems

Currently, most expert system shells do not address software engineering issues for developing or maintaining expert systems. As a result, large expert systems tend to be incomprehensible, difficult to debug or modify and almost impossible to verify or validate. Partitioning rule based systems into rule groups which reflect the underlying subdomains of the problem should enhance the comprehensibility, maintainability, and reliability of expert system software. Attempts were made to semiautomatically structure a CLIPS rule base into groups of related rules that carry the same type of information. Different distance metrics that capture relevant information from the rules for grouping are discussed. Two clustering algorithms that partition the rule base into groups of related rules are given. Two independent evaluation criteria are developed to measure the effectiveness of the grouping strategies. Results of the experiment with three sample rule bases are presented.
