Magnetic anisotropy and spin scattering in (La 2/3 Sr 1/3 )MnO 3 /CaRuO 3 bilayers

Complex ferromagnetic oxides have been identified as possible candidate materials for sources of spin currents. Here we study bilayers of ferromagnetic (La 2/3 Sr 1/3 )MnO 3 (LSMO) and metallic CaRuO 3 (CRO) on LSAT substrates as a model system for spin pumping. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements of these bilayers show evidence of spin pumping across the interface in the form of an increase in Gilbert damping with the addition of CRO. FMR indicates that the presence of CRO modifies the magnetic anisotropy of the LSMO. By increasing CRO thickness, we find a reduction of the out-of-plane anisotropy and simultaneous rotation of the easy axis within the plane, from the $\langle$110$\rangle$ to $\langle$100$\rangle$ axis. The evolution of magnetic anisotropy determined by FMR disagrees with that measured by bulk SQUID magnetometry and is accompanied by structural distortions in the LSMO layer as measured by x-ray diffraction, thus suggesting a change in magnetic anisotropy attributed to structural distortions imposed on LSMO by CRO. These results suggest that while LSMO and CRO remain promising candidates for efficient pure spin current generation and detection, respectively, epitaxial integration of perovskites will cause additional changes which must be accounted for in spintronics applications.

Thermal stability and magnetization switching of composite free layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We present a micromagnetic study of a ferromagnetically exchange-coupled composite free layer design for perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions. The thermal stability factor and critical switching current density depend on the exchange coupling strength and effective anisotropy ratio between the sublayers of the composite free layer. The energy barrier increases with an increase of the exchange coupling strength until it reaches a plateau in the strong-coupling limit. An optimal exchange coupling strength exists that leads to the minimal critical switching current and a significant improvement of the figure of merit defined as the ratio between the energy barrier and critical switching current. This behavior is obtained for smaller device sizes with uniform reversal and larger sizes with domain wall reversal.

Electronic band structure and magnetism of CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si

Half-metallic Heusler alloys have attracted significant attention due to their potential application in spin-transport-based devices. We have synthesized one such alloy, CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si, using arc melting and high-vacuum annealing at 600 °C for 24 hours. First principles calculation indicates that CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si shows a nearly half-metallic band structure with a degree of spin polarization of about 93%. In addition, this value can be enhanced by the application of tensile strain. The room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns are indexed with the cubic crystal structure without secondary phases. The annealed sample shows ferromagnetic order with the Curie temperature well above room temperature ( T c = 657 K) and a saturation magnetization of about 92 emu/g. Our results indicate that CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si has a potential for room temperature spin-transport-based devices.

Emergent magnetic properties of biphase iron oxide nanorods

We report on the magnetic properties of biphase iron oxide nanorods (NRs) consisting of ferrimagnetic Fe 3 O 4 and antiferromagnetic α-Fe 2 O 3 phases. Annealing as-prepared NRs at 250 °C for 5h, significantly improved the crystallinity of the Fe 3 O 4 phase and enhanced the volume fraction of the α-Fe 2 O 3 phase. Magnetometry data consistently reveal these two magnetically distinct phases, which are not in proximity to each other but separated by a region of disordered spins giving rise to enhanced magnetization at low temperatures when the sample was cooled down from 300 K in the presence of a 1T field to 10 K. This phenomenon which is also known as the pinning effect is much more pronounced in the annealed sample, resulting from the increased volume fraction of the α-Fe 2 O 3 phase which could strengthen the interfacial spin frustration between these two phases and enhance the density of disordered spins at the interface.

Proximity enhanced magnetism at NiFe 2 O 4 /Graphene interface

Here, we explore the change in effective magnetic anisotropy of the ferrimagnetic (FM) insulator nickel ferrite (NFO) thin film due to the inclusion of monolayer graphene (MLG) grown on top of the NFO layer. This was done by performing radio frequency (RF) transverse susceptibility (TS) measurements on bare NFO and NFO/MLG bilayer samples for both in-plane (IP) and out-of-plane (OOP) configurations utilizing a tunnel diode oscillator technique. Our magnetometry measurements indicated an enhancement in the overall saturation magnetization of the NFO/MLG bilayer with respect to the bare NFO film. The TS measurements reveal that the inclusion of MLG reduces the effective magnetic anisotropy for both IP and OOP configurations drastically, by up to a factor of 2 over the temperature range 40 K ≤ T ≤ 280 K. Since NFO is a magnetic substrate, it is possible that NFO could induce magnetic ordering in MLG at the NFO/MLG interface via the magnetic proximity effect. Furthermore, since NFO is insulating and MLG is a semimetal, there likely exists a large conductivity difference at the interface, making charge transfer plausible. These two effects could modify the interfacial magnetism leading to a change in the effective magnetic anisotropy. These results highlight the importance of understanding the interfacial magnetism of FM/MLG heterostructures.

Polarised luminescence of bismuth active centres in germanosilicate glasses

We have studied polarised luminescence of bismuth active centres in germanosilicate glasses. The 1.4-μm luminescence components with orthogonal polarisation states under excitation with linearly polarised light at λ = 1.26 μm have been shown to differ in intensity. The degree of polarisation reaches ∼0.12. Increasing the concentration of bismuth active centres leads to a decrease in the degree of polarisation of luminescence in the range studied. Effect of elastic anisotropy on thermally induced distortions of a laser beam in single cubic syngony crystals with radial cooling. Part I

We have studied thermally induced distortions of a beam in single cubic syngony crystals of all symmetry groups with an anisotropic elastic stiffness tensor. The arithmetic mean and the difference between the thermally induced phase incursions of eigenpolarisations, as well as the angle of incidence of these polarisations, are calculated for a long rod and a thin disk with radial cooling under uniform volume pumping of the active element. The position of the specific crystal orientations unrelated to its symmetry elements is investigated. The effective values of the thermo-optical constant Q in two specific orientations, as well as the thermo-optical constant P in an arbitrary orientation, are found. (invited paper)

Second-harmonic generation in zinc blende crystals under combined action of femtosecond optical and strong terahertz fields

The influence of a short intense (with an electric field strength up to 250 kV cm{sup −1}) terahertz (THz) pulse on the generation of second harmonic (SH) of Ti : sapphire laser radiation in crystals of zinc blende type (InAs and GaAs), characterised by nonzero bulk quadratic susceptibility, is investigated. It is experimentally shown for InAs(100) that, in the case of s-polarised first and second harmonics, an application of s-polarised THz field changes significantly the SH signal. The THz field-induced azimuthal dependence of the SH signal is in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation within a phenomenological approach. The dependence of the SH signal on the delay time between the optical and THz pulses is investigated. This dependence for the GaAs crystal repeats the envelope of the THz pulse intensity, whereas in the case of InAs crystal there is a significant discrepancy, caused by the nonlinear dynamics of strong THz field in InAs. Analysis of laser-induced modification of collagen structure using nonlinear optical microscopy

Nonlinear optical microscopy is used to monitor changes in the collagen structure of patellar ligament after IR laser heating up to a temperature of 60 °C. Pre-denaturation modification of the tissue matrix exhibits specific properties and consists in splitting of initially parallel fibre bundles into array of divergent fibres. Image processing employing Fast Fourier transform analysis is used for characterising images of the fibre structure and determining the collagen orientation index. An increase in manifestation of laser-induced disordering with an increase in IR laser radiation power from 0.3 to 2 W is accompanied by a decrease in the collagen orientation index. The specific disorganisation of the collagen tissue structure during laser heating is supposed to be due to fast speed and local action of the laser heating, which leads to mechanical distortions of the structural elements of tissue matrix. Soft X-ray and EUV emission spectra of beryllium plasma produced by neodymium-glass laser radiation with broad frequency and angular spectra

We present the results of an experimental study of soft X-ray (SXR) and extreme ultraviolet emission spectra of the plasma produced by exposing a plane solid beryllium target to laser radiation with broad frequency and angular spectra. SXR lines up to 1s – 9p of Be IV as well as the plasma continuum are recorded for a laser focal-spot intensity of 5.3 × 10{sup 13} W cm{sup −2}. To model the SXR beryllium plasma spectra, simulations are carried out using the INDHAUS programme and the FLYCHK code in the framework of local thermodynamic equilibrium model, which agree nicely with experimentally obtained results. Photonic methods and technologies for monitoring the ocean and atmosphere

In this paper, we review photonic methods and technologies that are promising for monitoring the ocean and atmosphere and have been implemented mainly in recent years at the Institute of Automation and Control Processes, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. We present results of lidar studies that have made it possible to understand key features of ocean – atmosphere interaction processes under continent – ocean transition conditions, which determine specific features of the atmospheric aerosol distribution, small gaseous components of the atmosphere and its optical characteristics. We consider methods and tools for combined optical and laser fluorescence monitoring of the ocean surface. Particular attention is paid to results of research on remote methods and tools for real-time laser-induced and laser fluorescence environmental monitoring of the ocean, including specialised fibre-optic probes and mobile underwater robotic systems. We present results of the development and investigation of highly sensitive, noise-proof fibre-optic hydro- and seismic/acoustic sensors for remote monitoring of the ocean and robotic systems for underwater laser protection of marine vessels, hydraulic structures and oceanographic instruments against the negative impact of biofouling. Distributed fibre-optic temperature sensor for cryogenic applications based on detection of boson components of Raman light scattering

The possibility of designing a distributed fibre-optic sensor, allowing one to measure cryogenic temperatures (to liquid nitrogen boiling point), is experimentally demonstrated. The principle of operation of the sensor is based on measuring the intensity of boson peaks of Raman scattering in a fibre material, which are spaced by 1 to 3 THz from the probe frequency. The measurements are performed using a single-mode telecommunication fibre with a 15-μm-thick polyimide coating. The probe wavelength is 1.55 μm, the sensor spatial resolution is 4 m, and the averaging time is 60 s. Experiments are carried out in the temperature range of 75.6 – 79.6 K, with a temperature resolution of 0.5 K. (paper)

1.5 – 1.6 μm semiconductor lasers with an asymmetric periodic optically coupled waveguide

High-power 1.5 – 1.6-μm semiconductor lasers with an asymmetric periodic optically coupled waveguide are developed and their current – voltage, light – current, and spectral characteristics are experimentally studied. The characteristics of these lasers are compared with the characteristics of traditional lasers based on double separate-confinement heterostructures. It is shown that the developed lasers have lower divergence and almost the same threshold and power characteristics as conventional lasers with Fabry – Perot resonators. The developed lasers with a cavity length of 1.6 mm and a mesa-stripe contact width of 3 μm mounted in a housing 11 mm in diameter have a power no lower than 200 mW at a pump current not exceeding 700 mA with a divergence of 25 – 35° versus 45° typical for conventional lasers. Acousto-optic modulators for fibre-optic lines

The specific features of efficient matching of acousto-optic devices with single-mode fibres for the cases of isotropic and anisotropic diffraction are considered. The acousto-optic interaction geometry, optimal for modulating an arbitrarily polarised light beam with a possibility of tuning its frequency shift in the range up to ∼10 MHz, is chosen. Acousto-optic modulators/frequency shifters based on paratellurite (TeO{sub 2}), pigtailed with polarisation-maintaining and non-polarisation-maintaining fibres, have been developed for wavelengths of 1064 and 1550 nm, and their main technical parameters are investigated. Destruction of absorbing metal films during laser printing with gel microdroplets

The degree of destruction and evaporation of metal films (Au and Ti, thickness ∼50 nm) with a gel layer during laser transfer of small volumes of a gel substrate is estimated depending on the laser fluence value. The dynamics of these processes for dry films and films with a gel layer at fluences close to threshold values is investigated using a probe beam of a He – Ne laser. It is shown that the presence of a gel leads to an increase in the ablation threshold, but the time during which the process of structural changes in the film material is completed does not change significantly. The results obtained can be used to improve the laser bioprinting technology. (interaction of laser radiation with matter)

Nonlinear waves in a thin dielectric film on the surface of a topological insulator

Based on the dispersion relation for a wave localised in a thin film of a nonlinear dielectric, which is located on the surface of a topological insulator, we have derived a system of equations that describes the propagation of a surface wave. It is shown that the longitudinal and transverse tangential components of the electric field vector are related due to the nonlinearity of the film and change periodically during propagation. It is found that the rotation period of this vector is determined by the axion charge of the topological dielectric and the nonlinear susceptibility of the thin film. (paper)

Seven-core fibre Raman laser with intercore coupling

This paper reports results of a study aimed at producing a Raman fibre laser based on a multicore fibre with high-reflectivity fibre Bragg gratings inscribed in its peripheral cores using femtosecond laser pulses. We present spectral and power characteristics of a Raman laser whose output power at a wavelength of 1090 nm is 2.5 W. The laser emission linewidth has been shown to decrease as a result of the reduction in nonlinear effects owing to the larger effective mode area in the multicore fibre in comparison with a standard single-mode fibre Raman laser.
