Apparatus and method for generating large mass flow of high temperature air at hypersonic speeds

A description is given of tests performed in the Mach number 8 to 10 regime to generate high temperature air at hypersonic speeds. The test flow was obtained by pressuring a ceramic lined storage tank with air to a pressure of about 100 to 200 atm. The air is heated to temperatures of 7,000 R to 8,000 R prior to introduction into the tank by passing air through an electric arc heater. The air cools to 5,500 R to 6,000 R while in the tank and then it is rapidly released through a Mach number 8 to 10 nozzle. Cold air or hot driver gas under pressure is injected simultaneously with the release of pressurized hot air and regulated to enter the tank at the same rate the hot air is leaving. This holds pressure in the tank constant during the test. Alternatively, the driver gas is introduced into the tank prior to the discharge of the hot air to increase the pressure in the tank and permit tests at higher pressures than can be handled by the arc heater.

Influence of gaseous hydrogen on metals

Tensile, fracture toughness, threshold stress intensity for sustained-load crack growth, and cyclic and sustained load crack growth rate measurements were performed on a number of alloys in high-pressure hydrogen and helium environments. The results of tensile tests performed in 34.5 MN/m2 (5000 psi) hydrogen indicated that Inconel 625 was considerable embrittled at ambient temperature but was not embrittled at 144 K (-200 F). The tensile properties of AISI 321 stainless steel were slightly reduced at ambient temperature and 144 K (-200 F). The tensile properties of Ti-5Al-2.5 Sn ELI were essentially unaffected by hydrogen at 144 K (-200 F). OFHC copper was not embrittled by hydrogen at ambient temperature or at 144 K (-200 F).

Test program on the contamination of ultraviolet region mirrors by Apollo Telescope Mount materials

Results are presented of testing performed to measure the effects of material outgas products on the reflectances of ultraviolet-region mirrors. These tests were to provide data on changes of ultraviolet reflectances of first-surface mirrors which had been exposed to the outgas products of selected materials under specific time and thermal-vacuum conditions. The requirement for such data was based on the extreme sensitivity of the sophisticated optical instruments in the Skylab mission's Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) to condensed outgas products from materials, and on the desire to insure that no serious hazard of contaminating these instruments existed.

DSN telemetry system performance using a maximum likelihood convolutional decoder

Results are described of telemetry system performance testing using DSN equipment and a Maximum Likelihood Convolutional Decoder (MCD) for code rates 1/2 and 1/3, constraint length 7 and special test software. The test results confirm the superiority of the rate 1/3 over that of the rate 1/2. The overall system performance losses determined at the output of the Symbol Synchronizer Assembly are less than 0.5 db for both code rates. Comparison of the performance is also made with existing mathematical models. Error statistics of the decoded data are examined. The MCD operational threshold is found to be about 1.96 db.

Handbook of photothermal test data on encapsulant materials

Laboratory tests performed to characterize candidate encapsulation materials with respect to changes in their physical and chemical properties caused by photothermal aging are described. Several key material properties relating directly to material degradation and deterioration of performance were identified and were monitored as functions of aging conditions and time. A status report on accelerated testing activities is provided and experimental data are presented. It will be updated periodically as more data become available.
