Transistor h parameter conversion slide rule

Slide rule enables the ready conversion of transistor h parameters from one form to another and reduces calculation time by a factor of 5 to 10. The scales are selected to cover all ranges of each parameter that will normally exist for any transistor, and answers are given in the correct order of magnitude, making powers-of-ten calculations unnecessary.

Effect of Propellant Feed System Coupling and Hydraulic Parameters on Analysis of Chugging

A digital distributed parameter model was used to study the effects of propellant-feed- system coupling and various hydraulic parameters on the analytical prediction of chugging instabilities. Coupling between the combustion chamber and feed system was controlled by varying the compliance of the injector-dome region. The coupling with the feed system above the pump was varied by changing the amount of cavitation compliance at the pump inlet. The stability limits and chugging frequencies proved to be strongly dependent on the degree of feed-system coupling. The maximum stability condition occurred with intermediate coupling. Under conditions of a high degree of feed-system-combustor coupling, the stability limits and chugging frequencies were primarily dependent on the feed-system characteristics; the responses were characterized by beating patterns. For the system analyzed, the pump suction line had little effect on the stability limits or chugging frequencies. Beating, present under the condition of near zero injector -dome compliance, was eliminated when the suction line was decoupled by employing a sufficiently high value of pump-inlet compliance. Under conditions of maximum feed-system coupling, the magnitude and distribution of line losses in the discharge line had a significant effect on the stability limits but had negligible effect on the chugging frequency and beating characteristics. Also, the length of the discharge line greatly affected the stability limits, chugging frequency, and beating characteristics. The length of the suction line, however, had little effect on the stability limits and chugging frequency but did influence the beating pattern. A resistive-shunt device attached to the pump discharge line to suppress chugging was investigated. The analysis showed that the device was effective under conditions of high feed-system coupling.

Simplified computation of compressible fluid flow parameters

Mathematical techniques analyze fluid flow through circular duct, enlarged or constricted circular duct, and across an orifice or nozzle. Using subsonic Mach number as basic flow parameter, a series of working graphs displays the variation of various physical parameters in each of the flow conditions.

Measurements of plasma parameters in a simulated thermionic converter

Cesium-filled thermionic energy converters are examined as candidate electrical energy sources in spacecraft requiring tens to hundreds of kilowatts of electric power. The high operating temperatures necessary for a large specific power and high efficiency inevitably impose stringent constraints on the converter fabrication to achieve the desired reliability of the power system. The converter physics for reducing operating temperatures and cesium plasma losses are studied to achieve high reliability without sacrificing the power performance of the converters. Various cesium parameters which affect the converter performance are: (1) electron temperatures, (2) plasma ion densities, and (3) electric potential profiles. These were investigated using a Langmuir probe in a simulated converter. The parameters were measured in different cesium discharge modes.

Correlations among the parameters of the spherical model for eclipsing binaries

Correlation coefficients were computed to investigate the parameters for describing the spherical model of an eclipsing binary system. Regions in parameter hyperspace were identified where strong correlations exist and, by implication, the solution determinacy is low. The results are presented in tabular form for a large number of system configurations.

Parameter identification using a creeping-random-search algorithm

A creeping-random-search algorithm is applied to different types of problems in the field of parameter identification. The studies are intended to demonstrate that a random-search algorithm can be applied successfully to these various problems, which often cannot be handled by conventional deterministic methods, and, also, to introduce methods that speed convergence to an extremal of the problem under investigation. Six two-parameter identification problems with analytic solutions are solved, and two application problems are discussed in some detail. Results of the study show that a modified version of the basic creeping-random-search algorithm chosen does speed convergence in comparison with the unmodified version. The results also show that the algorithm can successfully solve problems that contain limits on state or control variables, inequality constraints (both independent and dependent, and linear and nonlinear), or stochastic models.

Parameters of small scale ionization inhomogeneities in the F region of the ionosphere

The results of the parameters of small-scale ionization inhomogeneities study of the ionosphere's F-region for October-November 1965 and January-February 1966 are presented. It is shown that the most probable values of the inhomogeneity parameters are as follows: degree of anisotropy 1.4-2; vertical dimension 200-400 m; horizontal dimensions along major and minor axes 400-1000 and 200-600 m, respectively; rate of chaotic motions 30-60 m/sec; lifetime 6-9 sec.

Adaptive control of stochastic linear systems with unknown parameters

The problem of optimal control of linear discrete-time stochastic dynamical system with unknown and, possibly, stochastically varying parameters is considered on the basis of noisy measurements. It is desired to minimize the expected value of a quadratic cost functional. Since the simultaneous estimation of the state and plant parameters is a nonlinear filtering problem, the extended Kalman filter algorithm is used. Several qualitative and asymptotic properties of the open loop feedback optimal control and the enforced separation scheme are discussed. Simulation results via Monte Carlo method show that, in terms of the performance measure, for stable systems the open loop feedback optimal control system is slightly better than the enforced separation scheme, while for unstable systems the latter scheme is far better.

Statistical analysis of mission profile parameters of civil transport airplanes

The statistical analysis of flight times as well as airplane gross weights and fuel weights of jet-powered civil transport airplanes has shown that the distributions of their frequency of occurrence per flight can be presented approximately in general form. Before, however, these results may be used during the project stage of an airplane for defining a typical mission profile (the parameters of which are assumed to occur, for example, with a probability of 50 percent), the following points have to be taken into account. Because the individual airplanes were rotated during service, the scatter between the distributions of mission profile parameters for airplanes of the same type, which were flown with similar payload, has proven to be very small. Significant deviations from the generalized distributions may occur if an operator uses one airplane preferably on one or two specific routes. Another reason for larger deviations could be that the maintenance services of the operators of the observed airplanes are not representative of other airlines. Although there are indications that this is unlikely, similar information should be obtained from other operators. Such information would improve the reliability of the data.

Basic parameters for low thrust mission and system analysis.

Development of a basic set of normalized parameters to represent low-thrust system characteristics. The conditions which must be met to obtain trajectory and performance data which are invariant with the launch vehicle characteristics, the selected power, the specific mass of the low-thrust vehicle, and the efficiency of the ion propulsion system are derived. This normalized representation of mission characteristics frees the analyst from having to rerun the trajectories if any of the aforementioned parameters are varied. Examples pertaining to a low-thrust Jupiter flyby and comet Encke rendezvous are given to demonstrate the utility of the method of presentation.
