Real-time computer-generated hologram by means of liquid-crystal television spatial light modulator

The usefulness of an inexpensive liquid-crystal television) (LCTV) as a spatial light modulator for coherent-optical processing in the writing and reconstruction of a single computer-generated hologram has been demonstrated. The thickness nonuniformities of the LCTV screen were examined in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and the phase distortions were successfully removed using a technique in which the LCTV screen was submerged in a liquid gate filled with an index-matching nonconductive mineral oil with refractive index of about 1.45.

Mean fields induced by local gravity-wave forcing in the middle atmosphere

The role of geostrophic adjustment in the middle atmosphere for given wave packet forcing by a three-dimensional hydrostatic model is examined. It is shown that the induced fields consist of two different kinds of modes. One, produced by forcing vorticity only, is steady quasi-geostrophic flow; this is restricted to the forcing region. The other, produced by both forcing vorticity and forcing divergence, is oscillatory, and is in the form of gravity waves propagating out of the forcing region plus inertial oscillations in the forcing region. The scales and amplitudes of the induced gravity waves are determined by the forcing. For a typical example, a 200 km x 200 km gravity wave packet of momentum flux 0.5 N/sq m absorbed in a layer of 5 km thickness centered near 18 km altitude, the gravity waves spread to a larger region about 1000 km x 1000 km at a level 7 km above the forcing region. At that level, the horizontal and vertical wavelengths of the induced waves are about 300 km and 7 km respectively, and the momentum flux is substantially reduced to 0.0004 N/sq m. The results suggest that geostrophic adjustment processes may play an important role in specifying the gravity wave spectrum in the middle atmosphere.

Disturbance and vibration isolation in space stations by means of mechanical decoupling

A decoupling approach to disturbance and vibration isolation in large space stations composed of modules interconnected by flexible members is proposed. A simplified mathematical model for the motion of the space station core and a laboratory module with both torsional vibration and translational motion decouplers is used in this study. The dynamic behavior of the model in the presence of decoupler friction is analyzed. Estimates for the maximum excursions of the laboratory module induced by various types of external disturbance are derived. The paper concludes with a simulation study involving the hard-docking of a space shuttle with a space station.

Oblateness, radius, and mean stratospheric temperature of Neptune from the 1985 August 20 occultation

The oblateness and equatorial radius of Neptune at the 1-microbar pressure level, together with the position angle of the projected spin axis, are the goals of a general oblate atmosphere model for Neptune employing a data ensemble obtained from the occultation of a bright IR star that provided accurate measurements of the limb position at these and several other stations. The observed reduction in central flash intensity is explained by a 150-135 K temperature decrease as pressure rises from 1 to 400 microbar. Attention is given to the implications of these oblateness results for models of the Neptune interior.

A study of cell electrophoresis as a means of purifying growth hormone secreting cells

Growth hormone secreting cells of the rat anterior pituitary are heavily laden with granules of growth hormone and can be partialy purified on the basis of their resulting high density. Two methods of preparative cell electrophoresis were investigated as methods of enhancing the purification of growth hormone producing cells: density gradient electrophoresis and continuous flow electrophoresis. Both methods provided a two- to four-fold enrichment in growth hormone production per cell relative to that achieved by previous methods. Measurements of electrophoretic mobilities by two analytical methods, microscopic electrophoresis and laser-tracking electrophoresis, revealed very little distinction between unpurified anterior pituitary cell suspensions and somatotroph-enriched cell suspensions. Predictions calculated on the basis of analytical electrophoretic data are consistent with the hypothesis that sedimentation plays a significant role in both types of preparative electrophoresis and the electrophoretic mobility of the growth hormone secreting subpopulation of cells remains unknown.

The relative utility of persistence and medium-range dynamical forecasts of monthly mean 700 mb heights

The proposal of Harnack et al. (1986) that monthly 700-mb height anomalies can be predicted using simulated medium-range numerical forecasts is tested with actual numerical forecasts produced under strict operational conditions. These conditions included nonavailability of long model forecast histories from which to develop estimates of drift, frequent model changes over the period of the experiment, a requirement that each monthly forecast be made four days before the beginning of the month, and the use of only data which are available on the day of the forecast. The overall results and month-by-month results confirm the hypothesis of the Harnack group.

Graphical representation of three-dimensional vortical flows by means of helicity density and normalized helicity

The helicity density and normalized helicity are introduced as important tools for the graphical representation of three-dimensional flowfields that contain concentrated vortices. The use of these two quantities filters out the graphical representation of the flowfield regions of low vorticity, as well as regions of high vorticity but low speed where the angle between the velocity and vorticity vectors is large (such as in the boundary layer). Their use permits the researcher to identify and accentuate the concentrated vortices, differentiate between primary and secondary vortices and mark their separation and reattachment lines. The method allows locating the singular points in type I primary separations and tracing the vortex-core streamlines that emanate from them. It also allows locating the vortex-core axes in flows of other types.

Scattering from nonspherical Chebyshev particles. II - Means of angular scattering patterns

The calculated angular scattering properties of over 250 randomly oriented nonspherical Chebyshev particles are examined for the effect of three factors: size; concavity vs convexity; and amount of deformation from a sphere. Both shape and size averaging are performed to reveal general features of the angular scattering not discernible for particular shapes and sizes. Comparisons with a comparably extensive experimental study published by Zerull in 1976 reveal remarkable qualitative similarities, even though Zerull used greatly different shapes from ours. This augurs well for the eventual development of a general theory of nonspherical scattering, although such a theory must account for concavity in addition to the amount of deviation from a sphere; and it cannot be entirely deterministic, as the third paper in this series will argue.

Three-dimensional mean flow experimental study of 'vortex unwinding'

A seven-hole flow-angularity pressure probe was used to assess the effectiveness of vortex unwinding in a turbulent boundary layer. The vortex center moved in the spanwise and vertical direction with increasing longitudinal distance. Initially, the vortex moved rapidly; it achieved 60 percent of its total 41 mm spanwise travel before it had completed half of its travel in the longitudinal direction. The flow was studied behind the single vortex combined with the most successful unwinder. The unwinder was found to be very effective in reducing the amount of secondary flow in the boundary layer.

Sole means navigation through hybrid Loran-C and GPS

A minimum of four GPS range measurements or two Loran-C time differences are normally required for a position solution for en route navigation, area navigation, and nonprecision approaches. This paper describes a new technique that hybridizes GPS and Loran-C used in the pseudorange mode to process efficiently all available navigation information. Emphasis is placed on combined GPS and Loran-C timing, both for the ground/space facilities and the user. The hybrid system has the potential to solve the GPS and Loran-C integrity problems; more range measurements are available than are required for the navigation solution.

Choosing a software design method for real-time Ada applications: JSD process inversion as a means to tailor a design specification to the performance requirements and target machine

The validity of real-time software is determined by its ability to execute on a computer within the time constraints of the physical system it is modeling. In many applications the time constraints are so critical that the details of process scheduling are elevated to the requirements analysis phase of the software development cycle. It is not uncommon to find specifications for a real-time cyclic executive program included to assumed in such requirements. It was found that prelininary designs structured around this implementation abscure the data flow of the real world system that is modeled and that it is consequently difficult and costly to maintain, update and reuse the resulting software. A cyclic executive is a software component that schedules and implicitly synchronizes the real-time software through periodic and repetitive subroutine calls. Therefore a design method is sought that allows the deferral of process scheduling to the later stages of design. The appropriate scheduling paradigm must be chosen given the performance constraints, the largest environment and the software's lifecycle. The concept of process inversion is explored with respect to the cyclic executive.

Simulation of the low earth orbital atomic oxygen interaction with materials by means of an oxygen ion beam

Atomic oxygen is the predominant species in low-Earth orbit between the altitudes of 180 and 650 km. These highly reactive atoms are a result of photodissociation of diatomic oxygen molecules from solar photons having a wavelength less than or equal to 2430A. Spacecraft in low-Earth orbit collide with atomic oxygen in the 3P ground state at impact energies of approximately 4.2 to 4.5 eV. As a consequence, organic materials previously used for high altitude geosynchronous spacecraft are severely oxidized in the low-Earth orbital environment. The evaluation of materials durability to atomic oxygen requires ground simulation of this environment to cost effectively screen materials for durability. Directed broad beam oxygen sources are necessary to evaluate potential spacecraft materials performance before and after exposure to the simulated low-Earth orbital environment. This paper presents a description of a low energy, broad oxygen ion beam source used to simulate the low-Earth orbital atomic oxygen environment. The results of materials interaction with this beam and comparison with actual in-space tests of the same meterials will be discussed. Resulting surface morphologies appear to closely replicate those observed in space tests.
