From vertices to vortices in magnetic nanoislands

We report recent studies in magnetic nanoarrays show that a variety of complex magnetic states and textures emerge as a function of a single magnetic nanoisland's aspect ratio. We propose a model that, in addition to fitting experiments, predicts magnetic states with continuous symmetry at particular aspect ratios and reveals a duality between vortex and vertex states. Our model opens new means of engineering novel types of artificial spin systems, and their application to complex magnetic textures in devices and computing.

QCOR; A Language Extension Specification for the Heterogeneous Quantum-Classical Model of Computation

Quantum computing (QC) is an emerging computational paradigm that leverages the laws of quantum mechanics to perform elementary logic operations. Existing programming models for QC were designed with fault-tolerant hardware in mind, envisioning stand-alone applications. However, the susceptibility of near-term quantum computers to noise limits their stand-alone utility. To better leverage limited computational strengths of noisy quantum devices, hybrid algorithms have been suggested whereby quantum computers are used in tandem with their classical counterparts in a heterogeneous fashion. This modus operandi calls out for a programming model and a high-level programming language that natively and seamlessly supports heterogeneous quantum-classical hardware architectures in a single-source-code paradigm. Motivated by the lack of such a model, we introduce a language extension specification, called QCOR, which enables single-source quantum-classical programming. Programs written using the QCOR library–based language extensions can be compiled to produce functional hybrid binary executables. After defining QCOR’s programming model, memory model, and execution model, we discuss how QCOR enables variational, iterative, and feed-forward QC. Additionally, QCOR approaches quantum-classical computation in a hardware-agnostic heterogeneous fashion and strives to build on best practices of high-performance computing. The high level of abstraction in the language extension is intended to accelerate the adoption of QC by researchers familiar with classical high-performance computing.

Bayesian inference of Stochastic reaction networks using Multifidelity Sequential Tempered Markov Chain Monte Carlo

Stochastic reaction network models are often used to explain and predict the dynamics of gene regulation in single cells. These models usually involve several parameters, such as the kinetic rates of chemical reactions, that are not directly measurable and must be inferred from experimental data. Bayesian inference provides a rigorous probabilistic frame-work for identifying these parameters by finding a posterior parameter distribution that captures their uncertainty.Traditional computational methods for solving inference problems such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods based on classical Metropolis-Hastings algorithm involve numerous serial evaluations of the likelihood function, which in turn requires expensive forward solutions of the chemical master equation (CME). We propose an alternate approach based on a multifidelity extension of the Sequential Tempered Markov Chain Monte Carlo (ST-MCMC) sampler. This algorithm is built upon Sequential Monte Carlo and solves the Bayesian inference problem by decomposing it into a sequence of efficiently solved subproblems that gradually increase both model fidelity and the influence of the observed data. We reformulate the finite state projection (FSP) algorithm, a well-known method for solving the CME, to produce a hierarchy of surrogate master equations to be used in this multifidelity scheme. To determine the appropriate fidelity, we introduce a novel information-theoretic criteria that seeks to extract the most information about the ultimate Bayesian posterior from each model in the hierarchy without inducing significant bias. This novel sampling scheme is tested with high performance computing resources using biologically relevant problems.

Parameterized Neural Ordinary Differential Equations: Applications to Computational Physics Problems

This work proposes an extension of neural ordinary differential equations (NODEs) by introducing an additional set of ODE input parameters to NODEs. This extension allows NODEs to learn multiple dynamics specified by the input parameter instances. Our extension is inspired by the concept of parameterized ordinary differential equations, which are widely investigated in computational science and engineering contexts, where characteristics of the governing equations vary over the input parameters. We apply the proposed parameterized NODEs (PNODEs) for learning latent dynamics of complex dynamical processes that arise in computational physics, which is an essential component for enabling rapid numerical simulations for time-critical physics applications. For this, we propose an encoder-decoder-type framework, which models latent dynamics as PNODEs. We demonstrate the effectiveness of PNODEs with important benchmark problems from computational physics.

TEAM project review, year 1

This note summarizes our research activities within the TEAM project between October 2019 and November 2020, funded by the ASCR Advanced Research in Quantum Computing program. Three research efforts have begun during the review period. The first effort, resulting in the JuQBox software, implemented a novel algorithm for optimal control in closed quantum systems based on symplectic time integration and exact calculations of the gradient of the discretized objective function. In our second effort, resulting in a code called Quandary, we consider the optimal control problem for open quantum systems. Here the evolution of the quantum system is modeled by the Lindblad master equation. In this code, we are considering both the realization of quantum gates as well as the optimal reset problem in which a general mixed quantum state is driven towards its ground state. In our third research effort we have begun the development of computational software for what we call Lindblad learning, i.e. the process of characterizing the equations governing our quantum computing hardware.

Represent precipitation-induced geological hazards in Earth system models using artificial intelligence

Precipitation-induced geological hazards, such as debris flow, landslides, mudflow and rockfalls (hereafter referred to as landslides), pose serious threats to public safety in many areas through the world. As residential properties and infrastructure in the US have increasingly expanded into landslide-prone areas and the drivers of landslides (e.g., wildfires and hurricanes) are predicted to intensify under climate warming, losses and fatalities from landslides are likely to increase in the future. Although our understanding of geoenvironmental factors and mechanisms contributing to landslides has greatly improved, only moderate progress has been made in predicting landslides out of well-studied watersheds. Furthermore, explicitly representing various landslide-related processes in Earth system models (ESMs), from the buckling of local bearing elements in granular materials, to frictional sliding between grains, formation of microcracks in the soil matrix, rupture of capillary bridges, or breakage of plant roots3 is still very unlikely within the next decade, even with the help of exascale computers.

RSE-Ops

If DevOps is the intersection of "Developer" and "Operations," then how does this concept map to high performance computing? The answer is RSE-ops, or the intersection of Research Software Engineering and Operations. Research Software Engineers (RSEs) are the individuals writing code for scientific software, and supporting researchers to use codes on high performance computing systems. RSE-ops, then, generally refers to best practices for development and operations of scientific software, which typically happens in a high performance computing environment. A comparison can be made to Cloud Native Devops, which is a similar term that has emerged around Cloud Native Computing. It refers to the application of DevOps practices to the cloud.

NEAMS Milestone Report: M2MS–20OR030102 FW–CADIS PWR Ex-Core Analysis with Shift Through VERA

This report presents the work completed for the NEAMS milestone M2MS–20OR030102 titled "FW–CADIS PWR Ex-Core Analysis with Shift through VERA." The work completed for this milestone includes the implementation, integration, and optimization of memory and performance improvement methods in Shift for fully coupled ex-core calculations through Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA). Fully coupled in this context means the transfer of moderator boron concentration, pin-wise fission source, depleted compositions, temperatures, and moderator densities from MPACT (with COBRA-TF (CTF)) to Shift. The ability to run ex-core calculations with VERA has been enabled and used for several years by Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL) partners. However, this implementation was limited and potentially computationally burdensome. This work has enabled the ability to run higher-fidelity ex-core calculations on moderate computing clusters by focusing on multithreading, domain decomposition, and Forward-Weighted CADIS (FW-CADIS) variance reduction. Tests performed on small cores, a small modular reactor (SMR), and CASL progression problems show very promising memory reduction and computational performance. Recommendations for settings when running fully coupled high-fidelity ex-core calculations with VERA are documented. Without these optimization methods, many processors on a compute node would be left unused for the entire ex-core calculation. Therefore, these methods enable the user to better use the resources available and reduce computation time.

Algebraic Bethe Circuits

The Algebraic Bethe Ansatz (ABA) is a highly successful analytical method used to exactly solve several physical models in both statistical mechanics and condensed-matter physics. Here we bring the ABA into unitary form, for its direct implementation on a quantum computer. This is achieved by distilling the non-unitary R matrices that make up the ABA into unitaries using the QR decomposition. Our algorithm is deterministic and works for both real and complex roots of the Bethe equations. We illustrate our method on the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XX and XXZ models. We show that using this approach one can efficiently prepare eigenstates of the XX model on a quantum computer with quantum resources that match previous state-of-the-art approaches. We run small-scale error mitigated implementations on the IBM quantum computers, including the preparation of the ground state for the XX and XXZ models on 4 sites. Finally, we derive a new form of the Yang-Baxter equation using unitary matrices, and also verify it on a quantum computer.
