Data from Stewart et al. 2026 "Organic Colloid Composition in Variable-Redox Porewaters within a Mountainous Floodplain"

Redox gradients, often driven by changes in sediment moisture levels in porous, heterogeneous groundwater systems, create dynamic conditions that may promote the production and transport of colloids within natural waters. While much research has focused on the inorganic composition of colloids, the organic composition remains less well understood. Organic matter (OM) in colloids may associate with minerals, complex metal ions, and serve as an electron donor for microbial respiration; therefore, its composition is of high interest. We examined the composition of porewater OM along a redox gradient in a riparian soil located along the Slate River in Crested Butte, Colorado, USA as a function of depth (90, 130, 200, and 350 cm below ground surface). All depths were oxic to suboxic, except 200 cm, where the products of iron and sulfate reduction were observed concomitant with an increase in dissolved and/or colloidal OM, pH, alkalinity, and conductivity. We investigated the composition of porewater using correlated scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. We observed a change in the OM chemistry from carboxylate-rich at the 200 cm depth (where it was also enmeshed with non-crystalline iron) to phenol- and substituted-aromatic-rich at other depths. Radiocarbon dating revealed carbon in porewater at 200 cm was younger than depths above and below. Soil porewater can flow down into the underlaying gravel bed during baseflow conditions, thus we speculate whether riparian porewater could transport iron- and carboxylate-rich organic colloids into surrounding surface waters through the gravel bed conduit. This data package includes geochemical data (.csv) as a function of depth from porewaters in OBJ1. Measurements included are pH, conductivity, TOC, Fe concentration, sulfate concentration, dissolved oxygen. Additionally radiocarbon dating age of carbon in samples is provided. Additionally, this dataset contains metadata files (.csv) describing the methods, file contents, and column headers.

Accelerator Real-time Edge AI for Distributed Systems (READS) (Proposal)

Over the last decade, Machine Learning (ML) technologies have slowly made their way into the accelerator community. Rapid advances in recent years in deep learning, particularly reinforcement learning for control system applications and the accessibility of deep learning in embedded hardware, have generated renewed interest and spawned a number of applications. The Fermilab Accelerator Complex, shown in Fig. 1, has provided High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments with proton beams for nearly fifty years. The current focus of the laboratory is its world-class experimental program at the intensity frontier. While increasing beam intensity certainly presents its own challenges, preserving beam size while minimizing beam losses – particles lost through interactions with the beam vacuum pipe – turns out to be, in many ways, the main challenge. The accelerator is controlled via a complex system of hundreds of thousands of devices. Enabling fine tuning and real-time optimization of their parameters using ML methods and stepping beyond experience-based reasoning of human operators are key to the success of future intensity upgrades. Our objective will be to integrate ML into accelerator operations and furthermore, provide an accessible framework, which can also be used by a broad range of other accelerator systems with dynamic tuning needs.

Stabilized Hyperfoam Modeling of the General Plastics EF4003 (3 PCF) Flexible Foam

Constitutive model parameterizations for the General Plastics EF4003 low density 3 pound per cubic foot are needed for design and qualification purposes in normal and abnormal mechanical simulations. The material is expected to be deformed in two ways: first during preloading, and second under impact conditions of the system (transient dynamic). All analyses are to be performed at room temperature. The goal is to provide the analysis community a robust constitutive model parameterization to represent the compression behavior of the EF4003 foam from small deformations up to massive compressive deformations when the foam is densifying. It is worth noting the EF4003 exhibits anisotropy in its stress-strain behavior between the rise and transverse directions (See figure 2.8c-d) as well as plateau behavior that is very likely to cause material stability issues, due to the buckling transition, (and has historically done so) when using Sandia’s current workhorse models for flexible foams, Hyperfoam and Flex Foam. A Stability-informed Hyperfoam parameterization procedure is developed and executed to calibrate a hyperfoam model for the EF4003 room temperature, transversely loaded data. A rise orientation parameterization was not attempted due to localization in the experiments.

Climate Forcing & Feedbacks by Fires, Forests, Fossil Energy & Food Production: Observations are Key to Predictions [Slides]

Human emitted GHGs (long lived, cumulative) that trap more heat (IR) and aerosols (short lived, steady) that reflect sunlight (Vis) have altered Earth’s radiation budget and warmed our climate measurably and predictably. Our complex dynamic climate system has trapped 400 ZettaJ (10 21 ) and has many positive feedbacks. Regions are changing at unprecedented rates and crossing thresholds as BAU will lock us into 8.5 W m -2 in 2100.

High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Research Survey and Overview: Preliminary Data Platform Construction for the Nuclear Energy University Program

Since the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy initiated the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) in 2009, there are 29 NEUP projects focusing on high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) research up to July 2022. The resultant research product, either experimental or computational, were published as final NEUP reports, journal articles and conference proceedings. However, these federally funded products have been scattered and sometimes cannot be easily accessed. To improve access to this valuable HTGR validation data and optimize the return on the significant investment made by the Department of Energy, the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Gas-Cooled Reactor (GCR) program started a survey of completed and ongoing HTGR NEUP projects to develop a public-access database specific for HTGRs applications that can be used to retrieve computational fluid dynamics and system code validation data. This effort will help guide future NEUP-funded research, define new state of the ART Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT), and promote the usage of this data in the codes validation matrices. This report provides an overview of the NEUP-funded HTGR-related research projects from Fiscal Year (FY) 2009–2021 and identifies validation knowledge gaps still existing in HTGR thermal-fluid research. A preliminary data platform has been developed for the 29 NEUP projects investigating HTGR thermal hydraulics, including their final reports as well as the available scientific publications. As an ultimate goal for this work, the ART-GCR program will create a central database at Idaho National Laboratory to identify, organize, and store these datasets generated by experimental investigations or computational models, experimental facility descriptions, and publicly-available academic products from the HTGR-related NEUP projects and provide future guidance for the storage and transmission of important project documentations for later NEUP projects as well.

EVs@Scale Lab Consortium Bi-Annual Stakeholder Meeting, 17 August 2022, Golden, Colorado [Slides]

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Electric Vehicles at Scale Lab Consortium (EVs@Scale Lab Consortium) is accelerating research to support the establishment of a secure and scalable national network of charging infrastructure. This network will be critical to support tens of millions of light-, medium-, and heavy-duty EVs on American roads by 2030. The EVs@Scale Lab Consortium brings together national laboratories and key stakeholders to conduct infrastructure research and development (R&D) that advances innovations in, and sets unified standards for, high-power and wireless charging. The effort will also develop technologies to integrate vehicle charging with the power grid, and develop cybersecurity measures to protect drivers, vehicles, equipment, and the grid. The first hybrid EVs@Scale Lab Consortium Biannual Stakeholder Meeting was held at NREL on August 17, 2022, to identify research, development, and deployment needs to accelerate technology development for electric vehicles at scale and explore opportunities for collaboration across government, academia, and industry.
