Michelson interferometer with separated inputs and outputs, double pass, and compensation

A novel configuration is proposed for a Michelson interferometer spectrometer, which will be insensitive to tilts or displacements, and which employs separated inputs and outputs and double passing for higher resolution. The great advantage of such a compensated design is a relaxation of mechanical tolerances, which is especially beneficial for instruments in hostile environments. The Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy project, which must work reliably after being subjected to the vibrations of a Space Shuttle launch, would benefit from the use of such an instrument.

Double passing the Kitt Peak 1-m Fourier transform spectrometer

Attention is given to a simple technique for performing the conversion of the Kitt Peak 1-m Fourier transform spectrometer's dual input/output optical configuration to a double pass configuration that improves spectral resolution by a factor of 2. The modification is made by placing a flat mirror in the output beam from each cat's eye, retroreflecting the beams back through the cat's eyes to the first beam splitter. A single detector is placed at the second input port, which then becomes the instrument's output.

Energetics of a double flare on November 8, 1980

In the energy balance analysis of a double impulsive hard X-ray flare presently completed, it is deduced on the basis of spatial observations that both flares probably occur in the same loop, within the resolution limits of the data. Total energy losses are noted to be a factor of two lower than the calculated fast electron energy; this is interpreted as an indication that the first flare occurred in a small loop, with fast electrons heating the chromosphere and resulting in a chromospheric evaporation that increased the density in the loop. For the second flare, most of the heating occurred at the electron acceleration site. The estimated altitude of the acceleration site is 5500 km above the photosphere.

Dissociative and double photoionization cross sections of NO from threshold to 120 A

The partial photoionization cross sections for producing the NO(+) parent ion and the O(+), N(+), and NO(2+) fragmentations from neutral NO are presented from 120 to 614 A. The results indicate predissociation of the 3 pi (21.72 eV) and B-prime 1Sigma(+) (22.73 eV) electronic states of NO(+). The photoionization threshold for double ionization was found to be 39.4 + or - 0.12 eV.

Noise transmission of double wall composite shells

This paper describes analytical studies of noise transmission of double wall laminated composite cylindrical shells of finite extent. The main objective is to estimate structureborne noise generated by the concentrated random forces. The theoretical solutions of the governing acoustic-structural equations are obtained utilizing modal decomposition. Results indicate that from the viewpoint of noise attenuation the composite shell does not seem to offer advantage over an aluminum shell. However, the orientation of the fibers and the material characteristics of the soft viscoelastic core can be tailored to meet the specific needs of noise attenuation.

On the behavior of double degenerate binaries associated with Type I supernovae

An analytical investigation is performed of the evolution of double degenerate dwarf binary systems into Type I supernovae. The discussion is limited to systems consisting of carbon-oxygen and oxygen-neon-magnesium dwarfs and those composed of two carbon-oxygen dwarfs. The companions spiral together and the secondary, with a mass more than about 0.6 solar mass, fills its Roche lobe. The radius of the secondary increases faster than the Roche lobe due to mass overflow, which becomes unstable. The instability can lead to a Type I explosion and may or may not cause the formation of a neutron star. If a neutron star forms, the secondary, reduced to below 0.6 solar mass, will spiral inward to the primary and eventually be absorbed by the neutron star. If a white dwarf remnant remains after the supernova explosion of the overflow radius, then a second supernova explosion can occur.

Growing II/VI Semiconductors With Double Decantation

Concept for growing single crystals combines sheet solidification with controlled cooling. Proposed method for II/VI semiconductor compounds cools newly solidified crystal gradually and nearly isothermally so few defects formed. Method obtains maximum amount of crystal from minimum amount of melt. Double decantation causes sheet crystal to cool first in liquid, then in gas. Vessel tilted to pour off molten semiconductor material. Second tilt, in opposite direction, pours off encapsulant.

Factors influencing elastic stresses in double cantilever beam specimens

An elastic stress analysis was conducted for a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen using finite-element methods. The purpose of this study was to identify the important parameters that influence stresses ahead of the delamination front. The study focused on an aluminum DCB specimen, typical of adhesively-bonded joints, and on a graphite/epoxy specimen representing a cocured composite. Opening mode sigma sub y stresses ahead of the crack tip were calculated and compared with those for a monolithic reference specimen. Beyond the singularity-dominated region very near the crack tip, the sigma sub y distribution was elevated compared to the monolithic case. Both the adhesive thickness and the adherend transverse (thickness-direction) stiffness were found to influence the elevation of sigma sub y. In contrast, adherend thickness and longitudinal stiffness has very little effect on this stress distribution. Estimates for adhesive yielding beyond the aluminum DCB crack tip showed that both the area and height of the plastic zone increased to a peak value for increasing adhesive thicknesses. Results from this study would provide insight for comparing data from different DCB specimens and for designing new DCB specimens.

Double window viewing chamber assembly

A viewing chamber which permits observation of a sample retained therein includes a pair of double window assemblies mounted in opposed openings in the walls thereof so that a light beam can directly enter and exit from the chamber. A flexible mounting arrangement for the outer windows of the window assemblies enables the windows to be brought into proper alignment. An electrical heating arrangement prevents fogging of the outer windows whereas desiccated air in the volume between the outer and inner windows prevents fogging of the latter.

Double reference pulsed phase locked loop

A double reference pulse phase locked loop is described which measures the phase shift between tone burst signals initially derived from the same periodic signal source (voltage controlled oscillator) and delayed by different amounts because of two different paths. A first path is from the transducer to the surface of a sample and back. A second path is from the transducer to the opposite surface and back. A first pulse phase locked loop including a phase detector and a phase shifter forces the tone burst signal delayed by the second path in phase quadrature with the periodic signal source. A second pulse phase locked loop including a second phase detector forces the tone burst signals delayed by the first path into phase quadrature with the phase shifted periodic signal source.

Particle simulation of auroral double layers

Work on the simulation of auroral double layers (DLs) with realistic particle-in-cell models is presented. An early model simulated weak DLs formed in a self-consistent circuit but under conditions subject to the ion-acoustic instability. Recent work has focused on strong DLs formed when currentless jets are injected into a dipole magnetic field.

Some aspects of double layer formation in a plasma constrained by a magnetic mirror

The shift from wave-generated anomalous resistivity toward the more large-scale effects of magnetic confinement of current carrying plasmas was inspired by the more extensive data on auroral particle distribution functions that were made available, data that may often seem consistent with a dissipation-free acceleration of auroral electrons over an extended altitude range. Efforts to interpret these data have brought new vigor to the concept that a smooth and static electric field can be self-consistently generated by suitable pitch angle anisotropies among the high altitude particle populations, different for electrons and ions, and that such an electric field is both necessary and sufficient to maintain the plasma in a quasi-neutral steady state. Certain aspects of this concept are reviewed and criticized, both from a general theoretical standpoint and from the standpoint of what is known about the magnetospheric environment. It is argued that this concept has flaws and that the actual physical problem is considerably more complicated, requiring a more complex electric field, possibly including double layer structures.

Design and performance of controlled-diffusion stator compared with original double-circular-arc stator

The capabilities of two stators, one with controlled-diffusion (CD) blade sections and one with double-circular-arc (DCA) blade sections, were compared. A CD stator was designed and tested that had the same chord length but half the blades of the DCA stator. The same fan rotor (tip speed, 429 m/sec; pressure ratio, 1.65) was used with each stator row. The design and analysis system is briefly described. The overall stage and rotor performances with each stator are compared, as are selected blade element data. The minimum overall efficiency decrement across the stator was approximately 1 percentage point greater with the CD balde sections than with the DCA blade sections.

Incompressible Navier-Stokes solutions for a sharp-edged double-delta wing

An implicit finite-difference scheme is used to compute the incompressible laminar vortical flow around a double-delta wing with an aspect ratio of 2.06. By adding a time derivative of the pressure to the continuity equation, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations can be integrated like a conventional parabolic time-dependent system of equations. The flux-difference split scheme combines approximate factorization in crossflow planes with a symmetric planar Gauss-Seidel relaxation in the remaining spatial direction. The trajectory of the vortical core is well predicted in comparison with experimental data.

Stability analysis of double-peaked proton distribution functions in the solar wind

Twelve proton velocity distribution functions as measured for different solar wind speeds by the plasma analyzer at the Helios spacecraft are modeled analytically by a superposition of two bi-Maxwellians. The stability of these distributions is investigated by solving the linear dispersion equation for parallel propagation of both left- and right-hand polarized modes. Due to the temperature anisotropy of the main proton component the presence of the resonant left-hand ion cyclotron instability is found to be typical for high-speed streams and is independent of an ion beam. The results indicate that the ratio of the beam density to total particle density and the beam drift velocity are generally close to the threshold values necessary to drive a highly unstable nonresonant right-hand mode. This instability is found for one proton distribution and is a consequence of the beam particles. It is concluded that both the ion cyclotron instability and the ion beam instability act as a regulating mechanism on the shape of solar wind double humped proton distribution functions.

Spectrum and chemical analysis of the double-ring planetary nebula IC 1297

The double-ring planetary nebula IC 1297 resembles NGC 7662 in appearance, although it is of much lower surface brightness. What is remarkable is the great strength of the dielectronic recombination O V line. Although this line is seen as a P Cygni feature in a number of planetary nebulae, it is in those instances accompanied by a strong continuum and other easily recognized features of stellar origin. No star is visible on CCD images of IC 1297. Optical region measurements are supplemented by IUE observations. The following logarithmic abundance values are found: log N(He) = 11.065; log N(forbidden C) = 8.6; log N(N) = 8.1; log N(O) = 8.74; log N(Ne) = 8.16; log N(S) = 7.0; log N(Cl) = 5.4; log N(Ar) = 6.2. The nebula shows no dramatic pattern of nucleogenesis events.

Shear deformation plate continua of large double layered space structures

A simple method is presented to model large rigid-jointed lattice structures as continuous elastic media with couple stresses using energy equivalence. In the analysis, the transition from the discrete system to the continuous media is achieved by expanding the displacements and the rotations of the nodal points in a Taylor series about a suitable chosen origin. The strain energy of the continuous media with couple stresses is then specialized to obtain shear deformation plate continua. Equivalent continua for single layered grids, double layered grids, and three-dimensional lattices are then obtained.
