Bi-directional four quadrant (BDQ4) power converter development

The feasibility for implementation of a concept for direct ac/dc multikilowatt power conversion with bidirectional transfer of energy was investigated. A 10 kHz current carrier was derived directly from a common 60 Hz three phase power system. This carrier was modulated to remove the 360 Hz ripple, inherent in the three phase power supply and then demodulated and processed by a high frequency filter. The resulting dc power was then supplied to a load. The process was implemented without the use of low frequency transformers and filters. This power conversion processes was reversible and can operate in the four quadrants as viewed from any of the two of the converter's ports. Areas of application include: power systems on air and spacecraft; terrestrial traction; integration of solar and wind powered systems with utility networks; HVDC; asynchronous coupling of polyphase networks; heat treatment; industrial machine drives; and power supplies for any use including instrumentation.

Magnetic bulk photovoltaic effect: Strong and weak field

Shift current and ballistic current have been proposed to explain the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE), and there have been experiments designed to separate the two mechanisms. These experiments are based on the assumption that under magnetic field, ballistic current can have a Hall effect while the shift current cannot, which is from some energy-scale arguments and has never been proven. A recent work [D. Hornung and R. von Baltz, Phys. Rev. B 103, 195203 (2021)] using quantum transport formalism achieves a conclusion that shift current indeed has a Hall current, seemingly contradicting the previous assumption and making the situation more confusing. Moreover, the behavior of BPVE under strong magnetic field is still unexplored. In this Letter, using a minimal two-dimensional tight-binding model, we carry out a systematic numerical study of the BPVE under weak and strong magnetic field by treating the field in a nonperturbative way. Further, our model clearly shows the appearance of the magnetically induced ballistic current along the transverse direction, which agrees with the previous predictions, and interestingly a sizable longitudinal response of the shift current is also observed, a phenomenon that is not captured by any existing theories where the magnetic field is treated perturbatively. More surprisingly, drastically different shift current is found in the strong-field regime, and the evolution from weak to strong field resembles a phase transition. We hope that our work could resolve the debate over the behavior of BPVE under magnetic field, and the strong-field behavior of shift current is expected to inspire more studies on the relation between nonlinear optics and quantum geometry.

A High-Accuracy Power Loss Model of SiC MOSFETs in Current Source Inverter Considering Current Commutation and Parasitic Parameters

Power loss estimation of power electronic devices is important to the efficiency optimization of motor drives used in many applications. However, most existing simplified power loss models of silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs are not sufficiently accurate due to their neglect of parasitic parameters in the current commutation loop. In addition, the loss model of the voltage source inverter (VSI) cannot be directly applied to the current source inverter (CSI) because of differences between their commutation loops. First, the commutation processes for VSIs and CSIs are compared. The voltage and current trajectories of SiC MOSFETs in the switching transition of a CSI-based motor drive system are analyzed in detail. Based on these results, the conduction and switching losses of SiC MOSFETs in CSIs are modeled considering the current commutation details. In addition, the proposed analytical model includes parasitic inductances and capacitances in the current commutation loop. Experimental results have verified that the proposed power loss model delivers higher accuracy loss predictions than the conventional loss model.

The wire segment in question travels in a straight line from position a to b and carries current I in the direction towards b . The magnetic field of this segment alone will not be Maxwellian because the current does not satisfy the continuity equation. However, the field sum of a loop of such wires will be.

Aerosol Retrievals Using Channel 1 and 2 AVHRR Data

The effect of tropospheric aerosols on global climate via the direct and indirect radiative forcings is one of the largest remaining uncertainties in climate change studies. Current assessments of the direct aerosol radiative effect mainly focus on sulfate aerosols. It has become clear, however, that other aerosol types like soil dust and smoke from biomass burning are also likely to be important climate forcing factors. The magnitude and even the sign of the climate forcing caused by these aerosol types is still unknown. General circulation models (GCMs) can be used to estimate the climatic effect of the direct radiative forcing by tropospheric and stratospheric aerosols. Aerosol optical properties are already parameterized in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies GCM. Once the global distribution of aerosol properties (optical thickness, size distribution, and chemical composition) is available, the calculation of the direct aerosol forcing is rather straighfforward. However, estimates of the indirect aerosol effect require additional knowledge of the physics and chemistry of aerosol-cloud interactions which are still poorly understood. One of the main objectives of the Global Aerosol Climatology Project, established in 1998 as a joint initiative of NASA's Radiation Science Program and GEWEX, is to infer the global distribution of aerosols, their properties, and their seasonal and interannual variations for the full period of available satellite data. This will be accomplished primarily through a systematic application of multichannel aerosol retrieval algorithms to existing satellite data and advanced 3-dimensional aerosol chemistry/transport models. In this paper we outline the methodology of analyzing channel 1 and 2 AVHRR radiance data over the oceans and describe preliminary retrieval results.

Reconfigurable modular computer networks for spacecraft on-board processing

The core electronics subsystems on unmanned spacecraft, which have been sent over the last 20 years to investigate the moon, Mars, Venus, and Mercury, have progressed through an evolution from simple fixed controllers and analog computers in the 1960's to general-purpose digital computers in current designs. This evolution is now moving in the direction of distributed computer networks. Current Voyager spacecraft already use three on-board computers. One is used to store commands and provide overall spacecraft management. Another is used for instrument control and telemetry collection, and the third computer is used for attitude control and scientific instrument pointing. An examination of the control logic in the instruments shows that, for many, it is cost-effective to replace the sequencing logic with a microcomputer. The Unified Data System architecture considered consists of a set of standard microcomputers connected by several redundant buses. A typical self-checking computer module will contain 23 RAMs, two microprocessors, one memory interface, three bus interfaces, and one core building block.

Ring current impoundment of the Io plasma torus

A newly discovered feature in the Io plasma formation that may be described as a ramp separating a high-density plasma ledge on its Jupiterward side from the lower-density radially distended Io plasma disc on its anti-Jupiterward side is observed to coincide with a marked inward decrease in the ring current population. The spatial congruency of the counter-directed maximal gradients in both plasma bodies reveals a profound coupling between them. The existence of the ramp requires a local order-of-magnitude reduction in the diffusion coefficient that governs radial mass transport. It is demonstrated that the diminished diffusive efficiency there is caused by strong pressure gradient inhibition of the interchange instability that underlies mass transport. The Io plasma torus, which is defined as the region of strong ultraviolet emissions, is identified as the plasma ledge. The plasma density in the ledge is high and, incidentally therefore, able to emit strongly because it is impounded against rapid, centrifugal expulsion by the inwardly directed pressure of the ring current at its inner edge.

Neutral beams in two-ribbon flares and in the geomagnetic tail

The current sheet created in the wake of an erupting filament during a two-ribbon flare is studied. A comparison with the geomagnetic tail shows that the physics of these systems is very similar, and therefore the existence of super Dreicer fields and the generation of netural beams traveling down the postflare loops with small pitch angles may be expected. The observational evidence for neutral beams in flares is reviewed and found to be generally supportive, while contracting the widely held hypothesis of electron beams. A dimensional analysis further demonstrates that the results for self-consistent numerical simulations of the current sheet in the geomagnetic tail can directly be scaled to the coronal current sheet, and the scaling parameters are derived.

Jupiter, Tether, and Lenz's Law

Jupiter has a large, complex, and intense magnetic field that is thought to arise from electrical currents in the rapidly spinning metallic hydrogen interior. The strong magnetic field can induce currents when the conductive tether is directed toward or away from Jupiter. The currents can be stored and used for both propulsion and power generation. Therefore, our spacecraft might be able to visit several Jovian moons or maintain in the orbit around Jupiter. In our future space traveling, we also can use this technical skill to travel to other planets without any fuel. First-year physics textbooks describe Lenz's Law in which current is induced in a conductor moving through a stationary magnetic field. A demonstration of induced current in a stationary conductor and moving magnetic field is described, which may have space-tether application.

Evidence for opposed currents in active region loops

EUV and X-ray images of the sun are used as tracers of the magnetic-field structure in the solar atmosphere in order to study the existence of currents in active regions. Criteria are suggested for comparing the data with theoretical extrapolations of magnetic-field lines above the level of magnetograph observations. Analysis of the data presented in conjunction with force-free field calculations suggests the existence of currents flowing in opposite directions in nearby sets of loops in the active regions considered. Some simple qualitative implications of opposed current structures are suggested.

Welding-Current Indicator

Light flashes on to indicate high current. Simple, inexpensive display circuit indicates when 3,000-A welding current flows in welding gun. Onset of welding current induces voltage and current in 1,000-turn, 28-gauge copper-wire coil. Single-transistor amplifier amplifies induced current, energizing light-emitting diode (LED) connected to collector of transistor. Light from LED gives simple, direct indication of welding current.

Formation of Electrostatic Potential Drops in the Auroral Zone

In order to examine the self-consistent formation of large-scale quasi-static parallel electric fields in the auroral zone on a micro/meso scale, a particle in cell simulation has been developed. The code resolves electron Debye length scales so that electron micro-processes are included and a variable grid scheme is used such that the overall length scale of the simulation is of the order of an Earth radii along the magnetic field. The simulation is electrostatic and includes the magnetic mirror force, as well as two types of plasmas, a cold dense ionospheric plasma and a warm tenuous magnetospheric plasma. In order to study the formation of parallel electric fields in the auroral zone, different magnetospheric ion and electron inflow boundary conditions are used to drive the system. It has been found that for conditions in the primary (upward) current region an upward directed quasi-static electric field can form across the system due to magnetic mirroring of the magnetospheric ions and electrons at different altitudes. For conditions in the return (downward) current region it is shown that a quasi-static parallel electric field in the opposite sense of that in the primary current region is formed, i.e., the parallel electric field is directed earthward. The conditions for how these different electric fields can be formed are discussed using satellite observations and numerical simulations.

Comment on the transmission-line model for computing radiation from lightning

The 'transmission-line' model is an approximation that is frequently used to relate the electric and magnetic fields radiated during lightning discharges to the currents that produce those fields. A principal prediction of this model is that the distant (radiation) fields are directly proportional to the current propagating along the lightning channel, multiplied by the velocity of propagation. This paper examines the derivation of this relationship and its implications in some detail. It is shown that the formulas commonly used to describe the transmission-line model cannot be correctly applied to many lightning processes. A correction factor is required that is significant when the channel is not oriented perpendicular to the line of sight to the observer, unless the propagation velocity is only a small fraction of the speed of light. An important implication of this more general version of the model is that the current and velocity decouple so that they could be separately determined by suitable, multistation measurements.

Advanced electric propulsion research - 1990

An experimental study of impingement current collection on the accelerator grid of an ion thruster is presented. The equipment, instruments, and procedures being used to conduct the study are discussed. The contribution to this current due to charge-exchange ions produced close to the grid is determined using a volume-integration procedure and measured ion beam current design, computed neutral atom density and measured beam plasma potential data. This current, which is expected to be almost equal to that measured directly, is found to be an order of magnitude less. The impingement current determined by integrating the current density of ambient ions in the beam plasma close to the grid is found to agree with the directly measured impingement current. Possible reasons for the disagreement between the directly measured and volume integrated impingement currents are discussed.

Coronal loops - Current-based heating processes

Based on new observations, a theoretical model of magnetic-field related heating processes in the solar corona is given. In this model, field-aligned currents are induced along coronal loops in thin current sheaths. Excitation of instabilities involving magnetic reconnection converts the energy associated with the current-related magnetic field directly into particle energy, where the heating process proceeds via short bursts corresponding to an intermittent disruption of the current sheath configuration. Because of the relatively low transverse thermal conduction, only a small fraction of the loop volume is heated to a much higher temperature than the average value. This is consistent with experimental observations of low filling factors of hot plasmas in coronal loops. Thus the model involves a repeated sequence of dynamic events taking into account the observed loop topology, the differential emission measure distribution in the 10 exp 6 - 10 exp 7 K range, the energy balance requirements in the loop, and the probable duty cycles involved in the heating processes.

Attract-repel path planner system for collision avoidance

A system for determining a travel direction that avoids objects when a vehicle travels from a current location to a target location is provided. The system determines a travel direction based on an attract-repel model. The system assigns a repel value to the object locations and an attract value. A repel represents a magnitude of a directional repulsive force, and the attract value represents the magnitude of a directional repulsive force. The system calculates an attract-repel field having an attract-repel magnitude and attract-repel direction for the current location based on the repel values and their directions and the attract value and its direction. The system then determines the travel direction for a vehicle to be the direction of the attract-repel field at the current location.
