MAGSAT and aeromagnetic data in the North American continent

Problems were encountered in deriving a proper reference field to be subtracted from the aeromagnetic data obtained from Project MAGNET. Field models tried thus far do not seem to eliminate properly the main field. The MAGSAT data in the North American continent for the period November 1 to December 22, 1979 are being compiled and compared with MAGNET data. Efforts are being made to eliminate the orbital bias errors. A computer program was developed and successfully tested which computes a topographic profile of the Curie depth isotherm which fits best to the observed vector or scalar field magnetic data.

Solar pond power plant feasibility study for Davis, California

The feasibility of constructing a solar pond power plant at Davis, California was studied. Site visits, weather data compilation, soil and water analyses, conceptual system design and analyses, a material and equipment market survey, conceptual site layout, and a preliminary cost estimate were studied. It was concluded that a solar pond power plant is technically feasible, but economically unattractive. The relatively small scale of the proposed plant and the high cost of importing salt resulted in a disproportionately high capital investment with respect to the annual energy production capacity of the plant. Cycle optimization and increased plant size would increase the economical attractiveness of the proposed concept.

Investigation of MAGSAT and TRIAD magnetometer data to provide corrective information on high-latitude external fields

The compilation of a catalog of the MAGSAT-observed high altitude disturbances is discussed and an example of contents and format is given. The graphs allow the investigation of Birkeland current signatures which are superimposed upon the main geomagnetic field. An example of a display of the MAGSAT orbital tracks in a polar geomagnetic coordinate system with the locations, flow directions, and intensities of field aligned currents shown in color is also given. The display was generated using an interactive color graphics terminal.

Determination of eigenvalues of dynamical systems by symbolic computation

A symbolic computation technique for determining the eigenvalues of dynamical systems is described wherein algebraic operations, symbolic differentiation, matrix formulation and inversion, etc., can be performed on a digital computer equipped with a formula-manipulation compiler. An example is included that demonstrates the facility with which the system dynamics matrix and the control distribution matrix from the state space formulation of the equations of motion can be processed to obtain eigenvalue loci as a function of a system parameter. The example chosen to demonstrate the technique is a fourth-order system representing the longitudinal response of a DC 8 aircraft to elevator inputs. This simplified system has two dominant modes, one of which is lightly damped and the other well damped. The loci may be used to determine the value of the controlling parameter that satisfied design requirements. The results were obtained using the MACSYMA symbolic manipulation system.

Investigation of Antarctic crust and upper mantle using MAGSAT and other geophysical data

Plans to create an improved version of the MAGSAT magnetic anomaly map by more carefully scrutinizing the accepted data for field-aligned current effects are discussed. Data are continued to a 300 km surface for the compilation of a final map. Based on this set of data, vector anomaly maps over Antarctica are planned. A high-pass anomaly map with a cut-off wavelength of approximately 1500 km is also envisioned. It is suspected that longer-wavelength features have their origin outside the crust.

The AFGL molecular line Atlases

There are two compilations: the main Atlas and the Trace Gas Atlas. The main Atlas includes the major absorbers in the Earth's atmosphere. The main Atlas includes about 150,000 lines (the Trace Gas Atlas is 30-40,000 at the moment). The information on each Atlas is essentially a card image per line, which includes the frequency (in vacuum wavenumbers) of the transition, the line strength at a standard temperature of 296 Kelvin, and the half width of the line.

Plan of research for integrated soil moisture studies. Recommendations of the Soil Moisture Working Group

Soil moisture information is a potentially powerful tool for applications in agriculture, water resources, and climate. At present, it is difficult for users of this information to clearly define their needs in terms of accuracy, resolution and frequency because of the current sparsity of data. A plan is described for defining and conducting an integrated and coordinated research effort to develop and refine remote sensing techniques which will determine spatial and temporal variations of soil moisture and to utilize soil moisture information in support of agricultural, water resources, and climate applications. The soil moisture requirements of these three different application areas were reviewed in relation to each other so that one plan covering the three areas could be formulated. Four subgroups were established to write and compile the plan, namely models, ground-based studies, aircraft experiments, and spacecraft missions.

Current Studies of CH4 from 2.5 to 7 microns

The 3.5 micron region of methane was analyzed. The positions and strengths of approximately 9000 absorption lines in the region from 2400 to 3200 cm were measured. Spectra were obtained at a resolution of 0.1 cm using the Fourier transform spectrometer and at 0.02 cm resolution using the four passed grating spectrometer. The analysis of the 3.5 micron region required the use of spectra of CH4 in other regions, therefore the methane spectrum from 1200 to 4700 cm is indicated. The method used for the compilation of line lists is demonstrated.

Advanced stratified charge rotary aircraft engine design study

A technology base of new developments which offered potential benefits to a general aviation engine was compiled and ranked. Using design approaches selected from the ranked list, conceptual design studies were performed of an advanced and a highly advanced engine sized to provide 186/250 shaft Kw/HP under cruise conditions at 7620/25,000 m/ft altitude. These are turbocharged, direct-injected stratified charge engines intended for commercial introduction in the early 1990's. The engine descriptive data includes tables, curves, and drawings depicting configuration, performance, weights and sizes, heat rejection, ignition and fuel injection system descriptions, maintenance requirements, and scaling data for varying power. An engine-airframe integration study of the resulting engines in advanced airframes was performed on a comparative basis with current production type engines. The results show airplane performance, costs, noise & installation factors. The rotary-engined airplanes display substantial improvements over the baseline, including 30 to 35% lower fuel usage.

Map accuracy requirements: The cartographic potential of satellite image data

Cartographic products fall into a variety of classes: topographic maps that are concerned with planimetric information and elevations or heights; thematic maps, which might be used for geology, vegetation, water, or to display these subjects; digital elevation maps that would be produced from digital terrain data; and finally image maps. In terms of satellite applications, thematic maps and image maps are emphasized. The objectives are to consider, first, if resolution will be adequate for the identification of control and for the compilation of map products. Then, second, to define map accuracy standards and to determine the potential for meeting these standards with image data from the film camera, scanner and linear array systems of the 1980s.
