Chiral pumping from optical electric fields oscillating at terahertz frequencies is observed in the Weyl material TaAs with electric and magnetic fields aligned along both the $\textit{a}$ and $\textit{c}$ axes. In this work, free-carrier spectral weight enhancement is measured directly, confirming theoretical expectations of chiral pumping. A departure from linear field dependence of the Drude weight is observed at the highest fields in the quantum limit, providing evidence of field-dependent Fermi velocity of the chiral Landau level. Implications for the chiral magnetic effect in Weyl semimetals from the optical $\textit{f}$-sum rule are discussed.

We show that the entire continuous model of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) (and not just the two active bands) with particle-hole symmetry is anomalous and hence incompatible with lattice models. Previous works [e.g., Z. Song, Z. Wang, W. Shi, G. Li, C. Fang, and B. A. Bernevig, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036401 (2019); J. Ahn, S. Park, and B.-J. Yang, Phys. Rev. X 9, 021013 (2019); H. C. Po, L. Zou, T. Senthil, and A. Vishwanath, Phys. Rev. B 99, 195455 (2019); J. Kang and O. Vafek, Phys. Rev. X 8, 031088 (2018); M. Koshino, N. F. Q. Yuan, T. Koretsune, M. Ochi, K. Kuroki, and L. Fu, Phys. Rev. X 8, 031087 (2018); J. Liu, J. Liu, and X. Dai, Phys. Rev. B 99, 155415 (2019); L. Zou, H. C. Po, A. Vishwanath, and T. Senthil, Phys. Rev. B 98, 085435 (2018)] found that the two flatbands in TBG possess a fragile topology protected by the C 2z T symmetry. Song et al. [Z. Song, Z. Wang, W. Shi, G. Li, C. Fang, and B. A. Bernevig, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 036401 (2019)] also pointed out an approximate particle-hole symmetry (P) in the continuous model of TBG. In this paper, we numerically confirm that P is indeed a good approximation for TBG and show that the fragile topology of the two flatbands is enhanced to a P-protected stable topology. This stable topology implies 4l + 2 (l ϵ N) Dirac points between the middle two bands. The P-protected stable topology is robust against arbitrary gap closings between the middle two bands and the other bands. We also show that, remarkably, this P-protected stable topology, as well as the corresponding 4l + 2 Dirac points, cannot be realized in lattice models that preserve both C 2z T and P symmetries. In other words, the continuous model of TBG is anomalous and cannot be realized on lattices. Two other topology related topics, with consequences for the interacting TBG problem, i.e., the choice of Chern band basis in the two flatbands and the perfect metal phase of TBG in the so-called second chiral limit, are also discussed.
The body-centered-tetragonal antiferromagnet EuGa 4 was recently identified as a Weyl nodal-line semimetal that exhibits the topological Hall effect below its reported antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature T N = 15 – 16.5 K which we find to be T N = 16.4 ( 2 ) K. The Eu +2 ions are located at the corners and body centers of the unit cells. EuGa 4 exhibits A-type antiferromagnetic order below T N , where the Eu 2+ spin-7/2 moments are ferromagnetically aligned in the ab plane with the Eu moments in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis aligned antiferromagnetically. Low-field magnetization versus field M(H ab ) data at T = 2 K with the field aligned in the ab plane are reported that exhibit anomalous positive curvature up to a critical field H c1 at which a second-order transition occurs with H c1 ≈ 0.85 kOe for H∥ [1,1,0] and ≈ 4.8 kOe for H∥[1,0,0]. For larger fields, the linear behavior M ab = χ(T N ) H a b is followed until the critical field H c is reached at which all moments become aligned with the applied field. A theory is formulated for T = 0 K that fits the observed M(H ab ) behavior at T = 2 K well, where domains of A -type AFM order with fourfold rotational symmetry occur in the AFM state in zero field. The moments in the four domains reorient to become almost perpendicular to H ab at H c1 , followed by increasing canting of all moments toward the field with increasing field up to H c which is reported to be 71 kOe. A first-order transition in M(H ab ) at H ab = H c1 is predicted by the theory for T = 0 K when H ab is at a small angle from the [1,0,0] direction.
Here, we discuss the modified quantum electrodynamics from a time-reversal-breaking Weyl semimetal coupled with a U(1) gauge (electromagnetic) field. A key role is played by the soft dispersion of the photons in a particular direction, say $\hat{z}$, due to the Hall conductivity of the Weyl semimetal. Due to the soft photon, the fermion velocity in $\hat{z}$ is logarithmically reduced under renormalization group flow, together with the fine-structure constant. Meanwhile, fermions acquire a finite lifetime from spontaneous emission of the soft photon, namely, the Cherenkov radiation. At low-energy E, the inverse of the fermion lifetime scales as τ -1 ~E/PolyLog(E). Therefore, even though fermion quasiparticles are eventually well-defined at very low energy, over a wide intermediate energy window the Weyl semimetal behaves like a marginal Fermi liquid. Phenomenologically, our results are more relevant for emergent Weyl semimetals, where the fermions and photons all emerge from strongly correlated lattice systems. Possible experimental implications are discussed.
The parallel stripe phase is remarkable both in its own right, and in relation to the other phases with which it coexists. Its inhomogeneous nature makes such states susceptible to random fields from quenched magnetic vacancies. Here we argue this is the case by introducing low concentrations of nonmagnetic Zn impurities (0%–10%) into La 1.6–x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 (Nd-LSCO) with x=0.125 in single-crystal form, well below the percolation threshold of ~41% for a two-dimensional square lattice. Elastic neutron scattering measurements on these crystals show clear magnetic quasi-Bragg peaks at all Zn dopings. While all the Zn-doped crystals display order parameters that merge into each other and the background at ~68 K, the temperature dependence of the order parameter as a function of Zn concentration is drastically different. This result is consistent with meandering charge stripes within the parallel stripe phase, which are pinned in the presence of quenched magnetic vacancies. In turn it implies vacancies that preferentially occupy sites within the charge stripes, and hence that can be very effective at disrupting superconductivity in Nd-LSCO (x=0.125), and, by extension, in all systems exhibiting parallel stripes.

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 (CoSnS) crystals using macroscopic characterization and observations of the domain structure (DS) in a wide range of easy- and hard-axis fields (𝐻) and temperatures (𝑇). From macroscopic measurements, we derive temperature dependences of the basic magnetic parameters of the material [saturation magnetization 𝑀 𝑠 (𝑇), uniaxial anisotropy constant 𝐾(𝑇), and exchange stiffness 𝐴(𝑇)] and, based on them, calculate the thermodynamic magnetization 𝑀(𝐻,𝑇) curves and DS parameters for pinning-free samples. We find important qualitative and quantitative differences between the theory and experiment defined by the efficient pinning of domain walls (DWs) in our samples. It turns out that, already at temperatures close to the ferromagnetic transition 𝑇 𝑐 , the DW dynamics falls into the heavy creep regime, resulting in a strong deferral of the DS adjustment into the equilibrium state. Here, we suggest that specific magnetic defects, responsible for pinning and causing field-tuned reproducible domain nucleation patterns observed in our high-quality samples, are pointlike. Recently found magnetic polarons formed around vacancies and impurities, which carry strong diamagnetic moments of spin-orbit nature and are intrinsic for CoSnS and expected in other Weyl semimetals, are a possible source of pinning yielding peculiar 𝑀(𝐻,𝑇) response of CoSnS.
Observations of anomalous angular correlations in electron-positron pairs produced from excited states of 4 He, 8 Be, and 12 C nuclei have been suggested as being due to the creation and subsequent decay of a new light particle of mass ~17MeV. In this work, we investigate the possibility that the source of the observed signals is a set of new excitation channels created by the 12-quark hidden-color Fock state within the 4 He nuclear wave function dubbed the “hexadiquark.” We calculate the invariant e + e - mass spectrum for the electromagnetic transition from a new excitation of 4 He, estimating its differential and total decay width. We find that we can fit the shape of the anomalous signal with the QCD Fock state at excitation energy E* = 17.9 ± 1MeV and a Gaussian form factor for the electromagnetic decay. We address the physical issues with the fit parameters using properties of the hexadiquark state, in particular the three weakly repulsive 6 C interactions of SU(3) C between diquark pairs. Experimental tests of our model are described in detail. In light of this work, we emphasize the need for independent experimental confirmation or refutation of the ATOMKI results as well as dedicated experiments to search for the proposed new excitations of 4 He and other a-cluster nuclei.
