The Abundances of Methane and Ortho/Para Hydrogen in Uranus and Neptune: Implications of New Laboratory 4-0 H(sub 2) Quadrapole Line Parameters

The tropospheric methane molar fraction (f(sub ch4,t)) and the ortho/para hydrogen ratio are derived for Uranus and Neptune based on new determinations of spectroscopic parameters for key hydrogen features as reported by Ferguson et al. (1993, J. Mol. Spec 160, 315-325). For each planet, the relatively weak laboratory linestrengths (approximately 30% and 15% less than the theoretical 4-0 S(0) and S(1) linestrengths, respectively) results, when compared to analyses adopting theoretical values, in a ~30% decrease in the tropospheric methane ratio and a comparable increase in the pressure level of the optically-thick cloudtop marking the bottom of the visible atmosphere (P(sub cld)).

A Chandrasekhar Mass Progenitor for the Type Ia Supernova Remnant 3C 397 from the Enhanced Abundances of Nickel and Manganese

Despite decades of intense efforts, many fundamental aspects of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) remain elusive. One of the major open questions is whether the mass of an exploding white dwarf (WD) is close to the Chandrasekhar limit. Here, we report the detection of strong K-shell emission from stable Fe-peak elements in the Suzaku X-ray spectrum of the Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) 3C 397. The high Ni/Fe and Mn/Fe mass ratios - (0.11-0.24 and 0.018-0.033, respectively) in the hot plasma component that dominates the K-shell emission lines indicate a degree of neutronization in the supernova ejecta that can only be achieved by electron capture in the dense cores of exploding WDs with a near-Chandrasekhar mass. This suggests a single-degenerate origin for 3C 397, since Chandrasekhar mass progenitors are expected naturally if the WD accretes mass slowly from a companion. Together with other results supporting the double-degenerate scenario, our work adds to the mounting evidence that both progenitor channels make a significant contribution to the SN Ia rate in star-forming galaxies.

Multinuclear 1 H/ 13 C/ 15 N chemical shift assignment of therapeutic octreotide acetate performed at natural abundance

Abstract Octreotide acetate, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in the long‐acting release (LAR) drug product Sandostatin®, is a cyclic octapeptide that mimics the naturally occurring somatostatin peptide hormone. Modern NMR can be a robust analytical method to identify and quantify octreotide molecules. Previous 1 H chemical shift assignments were mostly performed in organic solvents, and no assignments for heteronuclear 13 C, 15 N, and aromatic 1 H nuclei are available. Here, using state‐of‐the‐art 1D and 2D homo‐ and heteronuclear NMR experiments, octreotide was fully assigned, including water exchangeable amide protons, in aqueous buffer except for 13 CO and 15 NH of F1, 15 NH of C2, and 15 NζHζof K5 that were not observed because of water exchange or conformational exchange. The solution NMR spectra were then directly compared with 1D 1 H/ 13 C/ 15 N solid‐state NMR (SSNMR) spectra showing the potential applicability of 13 C/ 15 N SSNMR for octreotide drug product characterization.

Non-Abelian electric field correlator at NLO for dark matter relic abundance and quarkonium transport

We perform a complete next-to-leading order calculation of the non-Abelian electric field correlator in a SU(N c ) plasma, which encodes properties of the plasma relevant for heavy particle bound state formation and dissociation, and is different from the correlator for the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. The calculation is carried out in the real-time formalism of thermal field theory and includes both vacuum and finite temperature contributions. By working in the R ξ gauge, we explicitly show the results are gauge independent, infrared and collinear safe. The renormalization group equation of this electric field correlator is determined by that of the strong coupling constant. Our next-to-leading order calculation can be directly applied to any dipole singlet-adjoint transition of heavy particle pairs. For example, it can be used to describe dissociation and (re)generation of heavy quarkonia inside the quark-gluon plasma well below the melting temperature, as well as heavy dark matter pairs (or charged co-annihilating partners) in the early universe.

Using pile-up collisions as an abundant source of low-energy hadronic physics processes in ATLAS and an extraction of the jet energy resolution

During the 2015–2018 data-taking period, the Large Hadron Collider delivered proton-proton bunch crossings at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV to the ATLAS experiment at a rate of roughly 30 MHz, where each bunch crossing contained an average of 34 independent inelastic proton-proton collisions. The ATLAS trigger system selected roughly 1 kHz of these bunch crossings to be recorded to disk. Offline algorithms then identify one of the recorded collisions as the collision of interest for subsequent data analysis, and the remaining collisions are referred to as pile-up. Pile-up collisions represent a trigger-unbiased dataset, which is evaluated to have an integrated luminosity of 1.33 pb -1 in 2015–2018. This is small compared with the normal trigger-based ATLAS dataset, but when combined with vertex-by-vertex jet reconstruction it provides up to 50 times more dijet events than the conventional single-jet-trigger-based approach, and does so without adding any additional cost or requirements on the trigger system, readout, or storage. The pile-up dataset is validated through comparisons with a special trigger-unbiased dataset recorded by ATLAS, and its utility is demonstrated by means of a measurement of the jet energy resolution in dijet events, where the statistical uncertainty is significantly reduced for jet transverse momenta below 65 GeV.

Neutron Irradiation Induced Changes in Isotopic Abundance of 6Li and 3D Nanoscale Distribution of Tritium in LiAlO2 Pellets Analyzed by Atom Probe Tomography

Tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen is produced by neutron irradiation of 6Li enriched LiAlO2 pellets in Tritium producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs). Three-dimensional nanoscale mapping of Tritium in irradiated pellets is critical to understand its spatial variation and its association with various microstructural features in the pellets. Spatially resolved analysis of 6Li isotopic enrichment in such ceramic pellets before and after irradiation can provide insights to heterogeneities in Li isotopic distribution. However, Li being a light isotope, its spatially resolved compositional or isotopic analysis is a challenging task to most analytical methods. Here we used atom probe tomography, to evaluate the Li isotopic enrichment in both the LiAlO¬2 matrix and the Li deficient secondary phase LiAl5O8 before irradiation. These results were then compared with 6Li isotopic ratio measured by APT analysis of neutron irradiated pellets to clearly demonstrate the unique capability of APT to quantitatively analyze the isotopic enrichment of 6Li as well as for other light elements present in these materials. Evidence for heterogenous nanoscale distribution of 3H and O3H within irradiated pellet microstructure is also provided, which is attributed to 3H trapping in irradiation induced vacancy clusters or voids within the LiAlO2 matrix. The characterization results given here, now prove the feasibility for using APT for analyzing nanoscale spatially resolved isotopic enrichment of Li as well as other light elements such as Tritium in TPBARs. This work also paves way to adopt APT for analyzing light elements such as Li and tritium in materials used for nuclear fusion reactor applications, geochemistry, astrophysics as well as for energy storage applications.
