Oxidation Resistance of Ti-Al-Cr-Nb-Based High-Entropy Alloys in Air at 1073 K

The effects of prolonged exposure to air at 1073 K on Al20Cr25Nb20Ti20Zr15 and Al20Cr25Nb19Ti20Zr15Y1 (at.%) high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were investigated in this work. Combined scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) analysis revealed that scales containing all major elements in the systems are formed during the oxidation process. Thermogravimetric analysis carried out under the above-mentioned corrosive conditions indicates an initial parabolic kinetics course in the case of the sample with 1 at.% Y addition. However, after a certain period of time, the correlation between mass gain per unit surface area and time becomes linear. In the other case, oxidation proceeds according to the parabolic rate law for the entire process duration. The addition of 1 at.% Y decreases the parabolic rate constants by 1 order of magnitude, thereby improving the chemical stability of the studied Al-Cr-Nb-Ti-Zr system. This is confirmed by visual evaluation, as well as SEM–EDS cross-sectional analysis. Additionally, x-ray diffraction studies indicate that a multiphase oxide scale is formed on the metallic core of both samples. This means that selective oxidation does not occur and all constituent elements took part in the reaction. Taking all of the above into account, it can be concluded that more research is required to fully understand and improve the corrosion resistance of Ti-Al-Cr-Nb-based HEAs.

Sesame: A 2-dimensional solar cell modeling tool

This work introduces a new software package “Sesame” for the numerical computation of classical semiconductor equations. It supports 1 and 2-dimensional systems and provides tools to easily implement extended defects such as grain boundaries or sample surfaces. Sesame is designed to facilitate fast exploration of the system parameter space and to visualize local charge transport properties. Sesame has been benchmarked against other software packages, and results for single crystal and polycrystalline CdS-CdTe heterojunctions are presented. Sesame is distributed as a Python package or as a standalone GUI application, and is available at https://pages.nist.gov/sesame/.

Substation Secondary Asset Health Monitoring and Management System (SSHM)

Electric Power Group, LLC (EPG) was awarded DOE OE0000850 to design, develop, and demonstrate a real-time software application for substation secondary equipment health monitoring and management at host utility American Electric Power (AEP), a cost share partner. This project addresses the need for monitoring substation equipment health and providing operators with tools to identify and take pre-emptive action to avoid catastrophic equipment failure. By monitoring synchrophasor data in real time, data anomalies that indicate potential asset failure can be detected and alerts can be sent to operators in time to take corrective actions. EPG developed two data driven algorithms to identify abnormal equipment signature patterns as well as a method using substation linear state estimation (SLSE). The software has been deployed on hardened PC’s and tested and validated for cost share partner AEP’s substations - 138kV and 765 kV. The SSHM software has been accepted by AEP and final demonstration of DOE - OE0000850 for AEP and DOE was successfully completed on March 17th, 2020. EPG developed the Substation Secondary Asset Health Monitoring (SSHM) Platform to analyze equipment failure signatures in PMU data and alert substation personnel when pre-emptive inspection, repairs and other actions are warranted to prevent potential catastrophic failures. This is the first system that automatically monitors the health of substation secondary assets and alerts users to emerging failures using synchrophasor measurements. SSHM uses high resolution PMU data from PTs, CTs, and CCVTs to analyze equipment signatures and identify anomalies that are precursor indicators of potential equipment failure. When an anomaly is detected, there is a likelihood of potential failure of monitored equipment, the system alerts the user with visual alarms including alarm trend charts and indicator lights on a oneline diagram of the substation.

Ranking and Classifying AI Benchmarks

We created a set of standards to efficiently evaluate AI benchmarks through objective means. Although prevalent, especially in recent times, AI benchmarks have no single way to measure their effectiveness. The MLCommons team provided a set of criteria for evaluating benchmarks, although the criteria lacks a clearly defined set of evaluation rules. We created a rubric with preset factors to efficiently and objectively evaluate a benchmark s quality. We created a software framework for processing lists of benchmarks for visualization. The framework and rating system allows researchers to quickly check if their benchmarks are effective.

A Modeling-Based Flammable Risk Treatment of Refrigerant Leakage from a Commercial R-290 Refrigeration Machine

Because of serious concerns about global warming, manufacturers have started phasing out high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants in commercial refrigeration equipment (e.g., R-134a). As a potential replacement, propane (R-290) is an environmentally friendly refrigerant for commercial refrigeration equipment because its GWP is only three. However, propane is flammable and is therefore classified as a Class A3 refrigerant per ASHRAE Standards, so safety is a very important consideration when propane-based equipment is designed and deployed in buildings. In the event of a refrigerant leak, flammability of the refrigerant depends on the refrigerant’s local concentration, which is highly affected by the indoor air environment, including temperature and air flow. In this study, a ventilation system attached to a commercial R-290 refrigeration device was designed to eliminate the flammability risk. Moreover, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to investigate the refrigerant leak, thereby evaluating effects of the ventilation system. The CFD model can visualize the flammable zones owing to the leak.

Strong Lens Discoveries in DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys DR10 with Two Deep Learning Architectures

Abstract We have conducted a search for strong gravitational lensing systems in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys Data Release 10 (DR10). This paper is the fourth in a series of searches. This is the first catalog of lens candidates covering nearly the entirety of the extragalactic sky south of declination δ ≈ +32 ∘ , all observed by DECam, covering ∼14,000 deg 2 . We impose a z -band magnitude cut of <20 in AB magnitude. We deploy a residual neural network and EfficientNet as an ensemble trained on a compilation of known lensing systems and high-grade candidates as well as nonlenses in the same footprint. The predictions from these two base models are aggregated using a meta-learner. After applying our ensemble to the survey data, we exclude known candidates and systems, and use our own visual inspection portal to rank images in the top 0.01 percentile of all neural network recommendations. We have found 811 lens candidates, five of which are confirmed through Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1). These include 484 new candidates in the Legacy Surveys DR9 footprint, all parts of which have been searched for strong lenses at least once before, either by our group or others. Combining the discoveries from this work with those from the first three papers in this series (335, 1210, and 1512), we have discovered a total of 3868 new candidates in the DESI Legacy Surveys.

Utilizing the dust streak-dryline intersection phenomenon in severe local storm forecasting

Several characteristics of a major dust storm on 20 February 1976 are presented. Four primary areas of discussion are considered: dust storm characteristics; comparisons between the cell detection capabilities of the geosynchronous satellite and radar; the use of the NASA Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (an interactive image processing system) for interactive display of visual and IR digital data to obtain qualitative and quantitative results on specific dust cloud and cloud top characteristics; and evidence that the intersection downwind of dust clouds (streaks) with the dryline can be used to forecast the initial storm development on the dryline and that the dust clouds detected on 20 February 1976 are a reflection of upper tropospheric speed maxima, which according to McNulty (1978) and others, are associated with rapid severe convective local storm development.

Experimental evaluation of exhaust mixers for an Energy Efficient Engine

Static scale model tests were conducted to evaluate exhaust system mixers for a high bypass ratio engine as part of the NASA sponsored Energy Efficient program. Gross thrust coefficients were measured for a series of mixer configurations which included variations in the number of mixer lobes, tailpipe length, mixer penetration, and length. All of these parameters have a significant impact on exhaust system performance. In addition, flow visualization pictures and pressure/temperature traverses were obtained for selected configurations. Parametric performance trends are discussed and the results considered relative to the Energy Efficient Engine program goals.

On the role of convective motion during dendrite growth: Experiments under variable gravity, revised

Experiments show the effect of self induced convection on individual dendrite growth in uniformly supercooled samples and solidification of the resulting mush under conditions of high and low g. Convection is visualized by a Schlieren optical system or a Mach Zender interferometer. For ice crystals growing from the vapor in air, a slight reduction in linear growth rate occur under low g. For ice crystals growing from NaCl solution, dendrite tip velocities are unchanged, but subsequent mush solidification is enhanced through drainage channels under higher g. By contrast, sodium sulfate decahydrate dendrites growing from solution produce convective plumes which lead to higher tip growth rate only as the crystal growth direction approaches that of gravity. Convective plumes are laminar for small crystals under conditions of these experiments; the rise velocity of such plumes is greater than individual vortex rings under identical conditions. Convection effects are only present in solution under a critical supercooling less than about 5 C for sodium sulfate and 2 C for ice in NaCl since at higher supercooling the crystallization velocity, proportional to the square of the supercooling, exceeds the convective velocity, proportional to the square root of the supercooling. The role of convective velocity in bulk solidification is to give a large scale flow which under extreme cases may lead to extensive secondary crystal production, which alters the resulting crystal texture of the completely solidified melt.

Sensitivity of F-106B Leading-Edge-Vortex Images to Flight and Vapor-Screen Parameters

A flight test was undertaken at NASA Langley Research Center with vapor-screen and image-enhancement techniques to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about near-field vortex flows above the wings of fighter aircraft. In particular, the effects of Reynolds and Mach numbers on the vortex system over an angle-of-attack range were sought. The relevance of these flows stems from their present and future use at many points in the flight envelope, especially during transonic maneuvers. The aircraft used in this flight program was the F-106B because it was available and had sufficient wing sweep (60 deg) to generate a significant leading-edge vortex system. The sensitivity of the visual results to vapor screen hardware and to onset flow changes is discussed.

Two-mirrored galvanometer laser light sheet generator

Light sheets generated with either laser or noncoherent sources have found widespread application to flow visualization. Previous light sheet generating systems were usually dedicated to a specific viewing geometry. The technique with the most flexibility is the galvanometer mirror based laser light sheet system. A two-mirrored system was designed and developed to provide flexibility and adaptability to a wide range of applications. The design includes the capability to control the size and location of the laser light sheet in real time, to generate horizontal or vertical sheets, to sweep the sheet repeatedly through a volume, to generate multiple sheets with controllable separation and to rotate single or multiple laser light sheets. The system is capable of producing up to 12 sheets of laser light at an angular divergence of + or - 20 degrees. Maximum scan rate of any one line is 500 Hertz. This system has proven to be uniquely versatile and a patent has been applied for.

Volumetric visualization of 3D data

In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in the ability to obtain detailed data on large complex structures in three dimensions. This development occurred first in the medical field, with CAT (computer aided tomography) scans and now magnetic resonance imaging, and in seismological exploration. With the advances in supercomputing and computational fluid dynamics, and in experimental techniques in fluid dynamics, there is now the ability to produce similar large data fields representing 3D structures and phenomena in these disciplines. These developments have produced a situation in which currently there is access to data which is too complex to be understood using the tools available for data reduction and presentation. Researchers in these areas are becoming limited by their ability to visualize and comprehend the 3D systems they are measuring and simulating.

The optical counterpart of the X-ray source H0253+193 - A distant, high-luminosity RS Canum Venaticorum system

Optical and near-infrared photometry in the VRIJHK and CO (2.35 microns) bands and optical spectroscopy and polarimetry reveal that the optical counterpart of the X-ray source H0253+193 is most likely a RS CVn binary system. The results show a visual extinction of 11.3 mag to the star, with an IR excess possibly due a cooler binary companion or circumstellar material. It is suggested that the I-band polarization of 8.1 + or - 1.8 may be induced in the starlight by passage through the molecular cloud. The lack of strong H-alpha emission in the optical spectrum argues against the possibility of a classical T Tauri star, and the IR excess argues against a naked T Tauri star. The wide energy spectrum found in the dereddened optical and near-infrared photometry supports the binary star model.

Simulation of brush insert for leading-edge-passage convective heat transfer

Current and proposed high speed aircraft have high leading edge heat transfer (to 160 MW/sq m, 100 Btu/sq in/sec) and surface temperatures to 1370 K (2000 F). Without cooling, these surfaces could not survive. In one proposal the coolant hydrogen is circulated to the leading edge through a passage and returned to be consumed by the propulsion system. Simulated flow studies and visualizations have shown flow separation within the passage with a stagnation locus that isolates a zone of recirculation at the most critical portion of the passage, namely the leading edge itself. A novel method is described for mitigating the flow separation and the isolated recirculation zones by using a brush insert in the flow passage near the leading edge zone, thus providing a significant increase in heat transfer.
