Zero-field magnetic ground state of EuMg 2 Bi 2

Layered trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to be a topological semimetal that hosts multiple Dirac points that may be gapped or split by the onset of magnetic order. In this study, we report zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements versus temperature χ ( T ) of EuMg 2 Bi 2 that show the intraplane ordering is ferromagnetic ( Eu 2 + , S = 7 / 2 ) with the moments aligned in the a b plane while adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically (i.e., A-type antiferromagnetism) below the Néel temperature.

Geometrical control of topological charge transfer in Shakti-Cairo colloidal ice

Lattice transformations that preserve the system topology, but not its geometry, are common in condensed matter systems. However, how geometric constrains influence the topological properties of the lattices is still unclear. Here we show that a geometric transformation between two mixed coordination lattices, from Shakti to Cairo in an artificial colloidal ice, leads to a breakdown of the ice rule in all but one specific geometry. We observe a transfer of topological charge among sublattices which can be controlled in sign and intensity, vanishing at the ice-rule point. These unusual topological effects are absent in magnetic spin ices and they are due to collective, non-local geometric frustration in the particle ice. By merging numerical simulations, theory and experiments, we demonstrate how the charge transfer occurs in the Cairo geometry. The broader implication of our results is that we demonstrate how geometric constraints can control the topological properties of a mesoscopic colloidal system.

Pressure-induced suppression of ferromagnetism in the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrSb 3

We have performed an extensive pressure-dependent structural, spectroscopic, and electrical transport study of LaCrSb 3 . The ferromagnetic phase (TC=120 K at p = 0 GPa) is fully suppressed by p = 26.5 GPa and the Cr moment decreases steadily with increasing pressure. The unit-cell volume decreases smoothly up to p = 55 GPa. We find that the bulk modulus and suppression of the magnetism are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, but the Cr moment decreases smoothly with pressure, in contrast to steplike drops predicted by theory. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature appears to be driven by the Cr moment.

Competing magnetic orders in quantum critical Sr 3 Ru 2 O 7

We investigated Sr 3 RuO 7 , a quantum critical metal that shows a metamagnetic quantum phase transition and electronic nematicity, through density functional calculations. These predict a ferromagnetic ground state in contrast to the experimentally observed paramagnetism, raising the question of competing magnetic states and associated fluctuations that may suppress magnetic order. We did a search to identify such low-energy antiferromagnetically ordered metastable states. We find that the lowest-energy antiferromagnetic state has a striped order. This corresponds to the E-type order that has been shown to be induced by Mn alloying. We also note significant transport anisotropy in this E-type ordered state. Furthermore, these results are discussed in relation to experimental observations.

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu 6 [Si 6 O 18 ] .6 H 2 O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to 21 T and magnetization measurements up to 30 T. In zero field, the Cu 2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the c axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the c axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at B*=12.2 T at 1.5 K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic X X Z spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around B*. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Linking NH$^+_4$ motion to magnetism in molecular multiferroic (NH 4 ) 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)]: A neutron vibrational spectroscopy study

Here, we present a neutron vibrational spectroscopy study to investigate the influence of NH$^+_4$ motion on the magnetism in [(NH 4 ) 1–x K x ] 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)]. The parent compounds, (NH 4 ) 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)] (x = 0) and K 2 ⁡[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)]⁢(x = 1) are isostructural at room temperature, yet displaying drastically different magnetic and multiferroic behavior. K 2 ⁡[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)] is nonmultiferroic with type-A collinear antiferromagnetic structure below T N ≈ 14.06 K, whereas (NH 4 ) 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)] is a type-II multiferroic with incommensurate cycloidal spin structure below T FE ≈ 6.8 K. A recent study of the dielectric, structure, and magnetic properties in the mixed [(NH 4 ) 1–x ⁢K x ] 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)] shows that a small amount of potassium substitution to replace NH$^+_4$ transforms the spin structure from incommensurate cycloidal (x ≤ 0.06) into commensurate collinear antiferromagnetic (x ≥ 0.15), indicating NH$^+_4$ is essential to the emergent phenomena observed in this molecular multiferroic compound. Our vibrational spectroscopy study reveals that NH$^+_4$ libration and torsion motion exhibit substantial temperature dependence at low temperatures. The intensity of NH$^+_4$ libration and torsion modes increases slightly at 5 K in comparison with data at 25 K behaving like a magnon, indicating that they are coupled to the magnetism in (NH 4 ) 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)]. Comparing data of x=0, 0.06, 0.09, and 0.15 samples further illustrates that the strength of the increased signal in NH$^+_4$ libration mode is very sensitive to potassium concentration. The signal diminishes quickly with increasing potassium concentration and vanishes in the x = 0.15 sample corresponding to the magnetic structure change for x ≥ 0.15. The results directly link the anomalous behavior in NH$^+_4$ libration motion to the magnetism in [(NH 4 ) 1–x ⁢K x ] 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)], providing new insights into the crucial role NH$^+_4$ plays in the coupled phenomena in (NH 4 ) 2 ⁢[FeCl 5 ⁢(H 2 ⁢O)]. The unique information opens a new door to go through in searching for new multifunctional materials by incorporation of NH 4 via a material-by-design approach.

High-magnetic-field phases in U 1-x Th x Te 2

At temperatures T much lower than its superconducting critical temperature T c = 2.1 K, the heavy fermion superconductor UTe 2 has a unique phase diagram of magnetic field H vs. φ and θ, angles H is tilted from the b-axis toward the a- and c-axes, respectively, of its orthorhombic unit cell. The phase diagram contains three distinct superconducting phases: SC1 in which φ and θ extend from 0 to 90° and H ≤ ~15 T; SC 2 for φ ≤ ~7°, θ ≤ ~4° and ~15 T ≤ H ≤ H m = ~35 T, the onset of the magnetic field polarized (FP) phase, and SC FP which resides entirely within the FP phase in a pocket of superconductivity extending from θ ≈ 20° to 40° and from ~40 T to above 60 T. We studied the evolution of the H vs. θ phase diagram for Th concentrations 0.005 ≤ x ≤ 0.047 in the U 1-x Th x Te 2 system at ~0.6 K. Within this range of x values, SC 1 extends over 0 ≤ θ ≤ 90° and H ≤ ~10 T for x = 0.047, while SC 2 is suppressed. The SC FP and FP phases are unaffected to x = 0.02 but are completely suppressed in the region x = 0.025 to 0.047 where the residual resistance ratio RRR ~3 indicates a significant amount of disorder. In conclusion, these results complement recent studies of nonsuperconducting disordered UTe 2 single crystals in which the SC 1 and SC 2 phases are absent, but the FP and so-called “orphan” SC FP phases are retained.

Incommensurate spin density wave and magnetocaloric effect in the metallic triangular lattice HoAl 2 Ge 2

Here, we report the magnetic structure and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of the ternary compound HoAl 2 Ge 2 with a trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 -type crystal structure. A neutron powder diffraction experiment reveals that HoAl 2 Ge 2 exhibits an incommensurate spin density wave (SDW) with a propagation vector k=(0.23,0,0.06). The special arrangement of magnetic moments in HoAl 2 Ge 2 induces interesting physical phenomena and large magnetocaloric effects. The rise in resistivity at low temperatures indicates the effect of the SDW state in the electronic transport. The maximum magnetic-entropy change is –16.1J/kg K under a magnetic field change of 0–70 kOe for an isotropic HoAl 2 Ge 2 powder and it increases to –17.9J/kg K for a single crystal when the magnetic field (H) is applied parallel to the ab plane. A large rotating magnetic-entropy change of –5.1J/kg K for H=20 kOe in a HoAl 2 Ge 2 single crystal is obtained, which is closely associated to the magnetic anisotropy of the SDW order and its response to the external magnetic field. We discuss the large MCE in terms of the field-induced metamagnetic transition from the incommensurate SDW order to the ferromagnetic order. Our study establishes the triangular lattice R Al 2 Ge 2 (R=rare-earth elements) as a unique family of compounds to explore the existence of the incommensurate spin density waves and the correlated physical properties.

Challenges of measuring spin Seebeck noise

Just as electronic shot noise in driven conductors results from the granularity of charge and the statistical variation in the arrival times of charge carriers, there are predictions for fundamental noise in magnon currents due to angular momentum being carried by discrete excitations. The inverse spin Hall effect as a transduction mechanism to convert spin current into charge current raises the prospect of experimental investigations of such magnon shot noise. Spin Seebeck effect measurements have demonstrated the electrical detection of thermally driven magnon currents and have been suggested as an avenue for accessing spin current fluctuations. Using spin Seebeck structures made from yttrium iron garnet on gadolinium gallium garnet, we demonstrate the technical challenges inherent in such noise measurements. While there is a small increase in voltage noise in the inverse spin Hall detector at low temperatures associated with adding a magnetic field, the dependence on field orientation implies that this is not due to magnon shot noise. We describe theoretical predictions for the expected magnitude of magnon shot noise, highlighting ambiguities that exist. Further, we show that magnon shot noise detection through the standard inverse spin Hall approach is likely impossible due to geometric factors. Implications for future attempts to measure magnon shot noise are discussed.

Spin dynamics and exchange interaction in orthoferrite TbFeO 3 with non-Kramers rare-earth ion

The low-temperature spin dynamics of the orthorhombic TbFeO 3 perovskite has been studied. It has been found that the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectrum of the investigated compound contains two modes corresponding to different sublattices. It is shown that the iron subsystem orders antiferromagnetically at T N =632 K and exhibits the high-energy magnon dispersion. The magnetic dynamics of this subsystem has been described within the linear spin wave theory and the in-plane and out-of-plane exchange anisotropy has been demonstrated. The approach proposed previously to describe the magnon dispersion in the TmFeO 3 compound has been used. Three levels of the nondispersive crystal electric field corresponding to Tb 3+ ions have been found in the energy region below 40 meV at about 17, 26, and 35 meV. The behavior of the magnetic correlation length of the terbium subsystem has been determined by studying the diffuse scattering at different temperatures. The evolution of this subsystem has been numerically described within the point charge model. In conclusion, it is shown that the numerical data agree satisfactorily with the experiment and with the general concept of the single-ion approximation applied to the rare-earth subsystem of orthorhombic perovskites.

Spin and orbital excitations through the metal-to-insulator transition in Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 probed with high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements (ΔE=46meV) have been performed on Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 through the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). A magnetic excitation at 125 meV evolves continuously through the MIT, in agreement with recent Raman-scattering results, and provides further confirmation for an all-in all-out magnetic ground state. Asymmetry of this feature is likely a result of coupling between the electronic and the magnetic degrees of freedom. We also observe a broad continuum of interband excitations centered at 0.3 eV energy loss. This is indicative of significant hybridization between Os 5d and O 2p states and the concurrent itinerant nature of the system. In turn, this suggests a possible breakdown of the free-ion model for Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 .

Dynamical ground state in the XY pyrochlore Yb2GaSbO7

Abstract The magnetic ground state of the pyrochlore Yb 2 GaSbO 7 has not been established. The persistent spin fluctuations observed by muon spin-relaxation measurements at low temperatures have not been adequately explained for this material using existing theories for quantum magnetism. Here we report on the synthesis and characterisation of Yb 2 GaSbO 7 to revisit the nature of the magnetic ground state. Through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering experiments, we observe evidence for a dynamical ground state that makes Yb 2 GaSbO 7 a promising candidate for disorder-induced spin-liquid or spin-singlet behaviour. This state is quite fragile, being tuned to a splayed ferromagnet in a modest magnetic field μ 0 H c ~ 1.5 T.

Structure and magnetism of the triangular lattice material YbBO 3

Abstract YbBO 3 is a member of the orthoborate family of materials which contains a triangular arrangement of Yb 3+ ions. Here we study the physical properties of YbBO 3 with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and ac susceptibility measurements. The neutron diffraction measurements confirm that our samples of YbBO 3 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C 2 / c (#15) which contains two crystallographically distinct Yb 3+ sites decorating a slightly distorted triangular lattice. Heat capacity and ac susceptibility measurements indicate a potential transition to magnetic order at 0.4 K. In agreement with these observations, neutron diffraction measurements at 0.044 K observe magnetic Bragg peaks which can be indexed by a propagation vector of (0 0 1). Although determining a unique spin configuration corresponding to the observed magnetic Bragg peaks is not possible, model refinements indicate that the ordered moments are likely in the range of 0.4–0.9 μ B and, notably, require moments on both Yb sites. In addition to the magnetic Bragg peaks, diffuse scattering at low Q is observed indicating that the transition does not correspond to complete long range magnetic order. The two-site picture for YbBO 3 is further evidenced by the number of crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Together these results show that YbBO 3 is a two-site triangular lattice material with signatures of long-range order as well as shorter ranged spin correlations.

Induced superconductivity in the two-dimensional topological insulator phase of cadmium arsenide

Hybrid structures between conventional, s-wave superconductors, and two-dimensional topological insulators (2D TIs) are a promising route to topological superconductivity. Here, we investigate planar Josephson junctions fabricated from hybrid structures that use thin films of cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2) as the 2D TI material. Measurements of superconducting interference patterns in a perpendicular magnetic field are used to extract information about the spatial distribution of the supercurrent. We show that the interference patterns are distinctly different in junctions with and without mesa-isolation. In mesa-defined junctions, the bulk of the 2D TI appears to be almost completely shunted by supercurrent flowing along the edges, whereas the supercurrent is much more uniform across the junction when the Cd3As2 film extends beyond the device. We discuss the possible origins of the observed behaviors.

Survival of itinerant excitations and quantum spin state transitions in YbMgGaO 4 with chemical disorder

A recent focus of quantum spin liquid (QSL) studies is how disorder/randomness in a QSL candidate affects its true magnetic ground state. The ultimate question is whether the QSL survives disorder or the disorder leads to a “spin-liquid-like” state, such as the proposed random-singlet (RS) state. Since disorder is a standard feature of most QSL candidates, this question represents a major challenge for QSL candidates. YbMgGaO 4 , a triangular lattice antiferromagnet with effective spin-1/2 Yb 3+ ions, is an ideal system to address this question, since it shows no long-range magnetic ordering with Mg/Ga site disorder. Despite the intensive study, it remains unresolved as to whether YbMgGaO 4 is a QSL or in the RS state. Here, through ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity and magnetic torque measurements, plus specific heat and DC magnetization data, we observed a residual κ 0 /T term and series of quantum spin state transitions in the zero temperature limit for YbMgGaO 4 . These observations strongly suggest that a QSL state with itinerant excitations and quantum spin fluctuations survives disorder in YbMgGaO 4 .

Giant Magnetostriction in Ferrimagnetic SmFe 5 As 3

Magnetostrictive materials are of interest not only from a fundamental perspective but also for their potential applications, spanning spintronics to energy harvesting. A new magnetostrictive material—SmFe 5 As 3 —reveals a complex interplay between magnetostriction, magnetic properties, and the crystal structure behavior. The ground state of SmFe 5 As 3 is ferrimagnetic, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility data, band-structure calculations, and XANES measurements. At T m1 = 28 ± 4 K, part of the Fe sublattice reorients, transitioning into a ferromagnetic state. This is followed by an entrance into the paramagnetic state at T m2 = 76 ± 4 K. The effects observed in the magnetic measurements are accompanied by structural phase transitions. All three phases—below T m1 , between T m1 and T m2 , and above T m2 —are described by the same structural motif of the UCr 5 P 3 type (monoclinic space group P2 1 /m), differing only in the degree of deformation of the Fe–As framework. The new material exhibits giant magnetostriction of 2500 x 10 -6 . Dilatometry measurements on a SmFe 5 As 3 single crystal indicate strongly diverse behavior, exhibiting not only negative, but also zero, as well as positive thermo-elastic effects.

Magnetic Field Optimization of an In-Vacuum Undulator at NSLS-II Transactions on Applied Superconductivity

A 3.0 m long In-Vacuum Undulator (IVU) is employed at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) for the Hard X-ray Nanoprobe (HXN) beamline providing structural and X-ray fluorescence imaging with world-leading spatial resolution. On July 1 st 2018 a gearbox shaft in the gap drive train assembly sheared due to corrosion fatigue caused by stress due to mechanical misalignment. Furthermore, the device was extracted from the storage ring and measured. The magnetic field measurements detected a degradation of the magnetic performance as well as a localized demagnetization of the magnetic modules of the first 3 upstream periods. We describe here the mechanical repairs and the magnetic phase shimming optimization implemented to restore the spectral performance of the device.
