Comparing the structures and photophysical properties of two charge transfer co-crystals

Organic co-crystals have emerged as a promising class of semiconductors for next-generation optoelectronic devices due to their unique photophysical properties. This paper presents a joint experimental-theoretical study comparing the crystal structure, spectroscopy, and electronic structure of two charge transfer co-crystals. Reported herein is a novel co-crystal Npe:TCNQ, formed from 4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine (Npe) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) via molecular self-assembly. This work also presents a revised study of the co-crystal composed of Npe and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) molecules, Npe:TCNB, herein reported with a higher-symmetry (monoclinic) crystal structure than previously published. Npe:TCNB and Npe:TCNQ dimer clusters are used as theoretical model systems for the co-crystals; the geometries of the dimers are compared to geometries of the extended solids, which are computed with periodic boundary conditions density functional theory. UV-Vis absorption spectra of the dimers are computed with time-dependent density functional theory and compared to experimental UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. Both Npe:TCNB and Npe:TCNQ are found to exhibit neutral character in the S 0 state and ionic character in the S 1 state. In conclusion, the high degree of charge transfer in the S 1 state of both Npe:TCNB and Npe:TCNQ is rationalized by analyzing the changes in orbital localization associated with the S 1 transitions.

Structural and physical properties of Ni 1- x V x alloys around and away from quantum critical point

We investigate the room temperature structure (global and local), temperature dependent magnetic and transport behaviour of Ni 1-x V x (0$⩽$x$ ⩽$ $0.13$) alloys. Our Energy Dispersive Analysis of x-rays results show that the prepared compositions are stoichiometric. With increase in V doping, the compounds exhibit a quantum phase transition around x c = 0.12, where the ferromagnetic phase is suppressed. Further, our results show that all the compounds stabilize in face centred cubic structure at RT and the lattice parameter shows unusual behaviour close to x c . The magnetic and heat capacity studies show signature of Griffiths phase on either side of x c . From 25 K to the lowest collected temperature, we observe a linear T dependence of resistivity at x = 0.1 and around x c , which is separated by a Fermi-liquid region around x = 0.106. This suggests that the origin of the transport behaviour is different around the quantum critical point and away from it. Our Ni K-edge x-ray Absorption Spectroscopy results show that there is a significant reduction in the first coordination number around Ni central atom on doping. Further, with doping, there is distortion in the first coordination shell around Ni. This suggests, with V doping, the local structure around Ni is different from the global structure as obtained from the x-ray Diffraction results. Interestingly, with doping, we observe a direct connection between the extent of distortion at RT and the magnetic disorder obtained at 2 K. We believe our results will motivate the scientific community to further study the interplay between the structural disorder and quantum fluctuations with temperature at the local level.

Mixed-Valent Copper Chalcogenides: Tuning Structures and Electronic Properties Using Multiple Anions

A series of mixed-anion copper chalcogenides have been prepared using solid-state methods including ACu 4.2 TeS 2 (A = K, Rb, Cs), which adopt the KCu 4 S 3 structure type. The mixedanion motif has an expanded sublattice, relative to KCu 4 S 3 , that can accommodate additional Cu atoms at its interstitial sites that are unoccupied in the parent structure. The variable temperature transport shows that the materials are p-type metals with carrier densities on the order of 10 21 cm -3 and room-temperature electrical conductivity as high as 4000 S cm -1 . Band structures calculated using density functional theory corroborate the experimental data and indicate that the interstitial Cu atoms lower the carrier concentration and increase the Fermi level of the materials. The layered structure has Te and S atoms occupying unique sites within the ACu 4.2 TeS 2 structure, where relatively hard S 2- anions prefer Wyckoff positions where they can form energetically favorable acid-base interactions with hard alkali cations. The phenomenon is observed in the related K 3 Cu 8 Te 2 S 4 system, which also has a fully ordered layered structure. Here, we believe that the report provides new chemical guidelines for targeting ordered multianion structures, as well as a unique method for tuning the electronic properties of metallic chalcogenides.

Building Atomic and Plasmonic Devices via Electron Beams: from Desired Structures to Desired Properties

The evolution of the aberration correction in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) has enabled multiple advances including high-resolution structural imaging, pm-level position detection of atomic columns, and ~3-5 mV resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy of the chemical and physical functionalities. These developments have further enabled the precise manipulation of the atomic structure of materials, including removal and formation of atomic planes in 3D materials, controlled atomic motion, and even direct atomic assembly of homo- and heteroatomic artificial molecules. Here, we will discuss several recent advances in STEM-EELS automated experiments as applied to quantum and nanoplasmonic systems.

Effects of Co doping on the structure and physicochemical properties of hausmannite (Mn 3 O 4 ) and its transformation during aging

Hausmannite is a common low-valence manganese oxide mineral with a distorted spinel structure in surficial sediments. Although natural Mn oxides often contain various transition metal (TM) impurities, few studies have addressed the substitution mechanisms of TMs, such as cobalt (Co), with hausmannite and induced changes in the mineral physicochemical properties. In this study, Co-doped hausmannites with final Co/Mn molar ratios of 0.05 and 0.11 were synthesized and characterized by wet chemical analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectra (FTIR), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS). Co-doped samples have larger crystallite sizes and smaller specific surface areas than those of the hausmannite without Co. The Co cations exist in a mixed-valence of +3 and + 2. Powder XRD and acid dissolution experiments indicate that Co incorporates into the mineral structures, and increases the mineral structural stability. Co K-edge extended X-ray adsorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis demonstrates that Co likely substitutes for lattice Mn(III). After aging at room temperature for three years, 14.1 ± 1.9% of pure hausmannite is transformed to manganite while only 2.6 ± 0.7% of manganite appears in the aged Co-doped sample with an initial Co/Mn molar ratio of 0.10. Finally, these results provide new insights into the incorporation mechanisms of TMs into low valence Mn oxides, and the stability of these minerals in natural environments.

Iron telluride ladder compounds: Predicting the structural and magnetic properties of BaFe 2 Te 3

Since the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the two-leg ladder system BaFe 2 X 3 (X=S, Se), with the 3d iron electronic density n=6, quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders have attracted considerable attention. In this work, we use density-functional theory to predict that the novel n=6 iron ladder BaFe 2 Se 3 could be stable with a similar crystal structure as BaFe 2 Se 3 . Furthermore, our results also indicate that BaFe2Te3 will display a complex 2×2 block-type magnetic order. Due to the magnetic striction effects of this block order, BaFe2Te3 should be a magnetic noncollinear ferrielectric system with a net polarization 0.31μC/cm2. In summary, the similar electronic density and magnetic ground state of Te- and Se-based ladders indicates both should display similar properties. In particular, the physical and structural similarity with BaFe 2 Se 3 suggests that BaFe 2 Se 3 could become superconducting under high pressure.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl)lanthanides

Six new solvent-free, homoleptic paramagnetic tris(alkyl)lanthanides Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1Ln) and Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2Ln) (Ln = Gd, Dy, and Er) were synthesized to investigate the magnetic properties of 4f organometallic compounds stabilized by secondary Ln←H–Si and benzylic interactions. The unit cell of 1Gd contains one independent molecule (Z = 2), while 1Dy and 1Er crystallize with four independent isostructural molecules per unit cell (Z = 16). In all molecules, as in other 1Ln compounds, the three tris(dimethylsilyl)methyl ligands form a trigonal planar LnC 3 core, and six secondary interactions involving Ln←H–Si bonding in Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 form above and below the equatorial plane. Two and five crystallographically independent molecules of each 2Ln (2Gd, Z = 8; 2Dy, Z = 20) form with three π-coordinated phenyl groups in addition to either one or two secondary Ln←H–Si interactions per molecule. The packing of these midseries organolanthanide compounds contrasts the single crystallographically unique molecules in previously reported La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1La, Z = 2, Z' = 1) and La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2La, Z = 2, Z' = 1/3). 2La doped with 2Dy can adopt the crystallographic structure of 2La, which promotes magnetic properties, namely a higher χ m T value at low temperatures as well as stronger magnetic anisotropy. The ac susceptibility data for 10% 2Dy doped into 2La suggests slow relaxation at low temperatures with a relaxation barrier of ~45 K. The computed saturated magnetization of 1Er (M ≈ 4.5 μ B ) and 1Dy (M ≈ 6 μ B ) matches the experimental values, while the computed value for 2Dy better matches the value measured for 2Dy diluted in 2La (M ≈ 5 μ B ). Gas-phase calculations predict that the ground-state and first excited-state multiplet separations are larger for 1Er than 2Er, while the ordering for dysprosium is 1Dy > 2Dy.

Ab-initio predictions of phase stability, electronic structure, and optical properties of (0001)-MAX surfaces in M 2 AC (M = Cr, Zr, Hf; A = Al, Ga)

In this work, we report MAX phases' surface properties, which are essential for thin-film technology due to their excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation, corrosion, and wear. The surface stability, electronic, and optical properties of 0001-surfaces in M 2 AC (M = Zr, Hf, Cr; A = Al, Ga) are investigated and compared with their bulk counterparts. The interplay between chemical bonding and charge distribution is discussed from electronic structure, including the Fermi surfaces. Four possible (0001)-terminated surfaces are considered by breaking M - C and M-A bonds in which cleavage energy of M - C is higher than M-A. The Cr–Al bond in Cr 2 AlC is stronger than other M-A bonds. The charge density of valance A-p electrons redistributes in the surface area, distinct from that of the bulk. The A- and M(C)-terminated (0001)-surfaces are the most stable and energetically favorable terminations due to lower surface energies. The optical properties of the most stable (0001)-surfaces were also investigated to understand the dielectric and photoconductive behavior in the (0001)-terminated surfaces of M 2 AC.

Evolution of structure and spectroscopic properties of a new 1,3-diacetylpyrene polymorph with temperature and pressure

A new polymorph of 1,3-diacetylpyrene has been obtained from its melt and thoroughly characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, steady-state UV–Vis spectroscopy and periodic density functional theory calculations. Experimental studies covered the temperature range from 90 to 390 K and the pressure range from atmospheric to 4.08 GPa. Optimal sample placement in a diamond anvil cell according to our previously presented methodology ensured over 80% data coverage up to 0.8 Å for a monoclinic sample. Unrestrained Hirshfeld atom refinement of the high-pressure crystal structures was successful and anharmonic behavior of carbonyl oxygen atoms was observed. Unlike the previously characterized polymorph, the structure of 2°AP-β is based on infinite π-stacks of antiparallel 2°AP molecules. 2°AP-β displays piezochromism and piezofluorochromism which are directly related to the variation in interplanar distances within the π-stacking. The importance of weak intermolecular interactions is reflected in the substantial negative thermal expansion coefficient of -55.8 (57) MK -1 in the direction of C—H∙∙∙O interactions.

Structure and electronic properties of CaAl 12₋x Fe x O19 hibonites

Dilution of iron in the AM 12 O 19 has shown promising coupling of magnetic and electric properties in the hexaferrites. In this study, we have prepared samples of low iron content in the isostructural hibonite, CaAl 12 -x Fe x O 19 , to investigate the structural effects of larger iron substitution into the aluminum sites and the resultant properties. We found a solid solution exists for CaAl 12 -x Fe x O 19 where x ≤ 5 . 5. Iron distributes into all sites with the tetrahedral M3 and octahedral M5 sites displaying nominally larger preference at higher Fe content. Paramagnetic behavior was observed for x = 1-3, while x = 4-5.5 displayed a broad ferromagnetic-like transition with increasing Curie temperature. Differences in field-cooled and zero-field-cooled magnetic susceptibility measurements and low magnetic moment indicate the presence of a frustrated antiferromagnetic structure as the source of the ferromagnetic-like behavior. Increasing Fe content also increases the dielectric constant up to 21 at room temperature with high dielectric loss.

A Dataset of 3D Structural and Simulated Transport Properties of Complex Porous Media

Physical processes that occur within porous materials have wide-ranging applications including - but not limited to - carbon sequestration, battery technology, membranes, oil and gas, geothermal energy, nuclear waste disposal, water resource management. The equations that describe these physical processes have been studied extensively; however, approximating them numerically requires immense computational resources due to the complex behavior that arises from the geometrically-intricate solid boundary conditions in porous materials. Here, we introduce a new dataset of unprecedented scale and breadth, DRP-372: a catalog of 3D geometries, simulation results, and structural properties of samples hosted on the Digital Rocks Portal. The dataset includes 1736 flow and electrical simulation results on 217 samples, which required more than 500 core years of computation. This data can be used for many purposes, such as constructing empirical models, validating new simulation codes, and developing machine learning algorithms that closely match the extensive purely-physical simulation. This article offers a detailed description of the contents of the dataset including the data collection, simulation schemes, and data validation.

Structural and vibrational properties of methane up to 71 GPa

Single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first principles calculations have been used to identify the structure of the high-pressure (HP) phase of molecular methane above 20 GPa up to 71 GPa at room temperature. The structure of the HP phase is trigonal R3, which can be represented as a distortion of the cubic phase B, previously documented at 7–15 GPa and confirmed here. The positions of hydrogen atoms in the HP phase have been obtained from first principles calculations, which also demonstrated the stability of this structure above 260 K at 25 GPa. The molecules occupy four different crystallographic sites in phase B and 11 sites in the HP phase, which result in splitting of molecular stretching modes detected in Raman spectroscopy and assigned here based on a good agreement with the Raman spectra calculated from the first principles. Furthermore, our study points out to a single HP phase unlike up to three HP phases proposed previously based on the Raman spectroscopy results only.

Structural and Catalytic Properties of Isolated Pt 2+ Sites in Platinum Phosphide (PtP 2 )

This article describes the synthesis and catalytic properties of supported, 2-3 nm platinum phosphide (PtP 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs). Depending on the P loading, two PtP 2 structures are formed, that is, a PtP 2 surface on a (metallic) Pt core (Pt@PtP 2 ) and single-phase PtP 2 NPs. The structures were determined using extended X-ray absorption fine structure , in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. In PtP 2 NPs, Pt 2+ ions are geometrically isolated by P 2 2- ions, at a Pt-Pt distance of 4.02 Å, which is much longer than 2.78 Å in (metallic) Pt NPs. The oxidation state of Pt in PtP 2 NPs was determined by in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and was found to be consistent with Pt 2+ ions even after treatment in H 2 at 550 °C. Unlike Pt NPs, which are highly active for propylene hydrogenation at room temperature, PtP 2 NPs are not active below about 150 °C, suggesting the absence of metallic surface Pt. In contrast to metallic Pt, which is poorly selective for acetylene hydrogenation, PtP 2 NPs display high selectivity toward ethylene. PtP 2 , also has high olefin selectivity for propane dehydrogenation, although the rate per g Pt is about 7 times lower than that of metallic Pt NPs of the same size. In situ resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy shows that the energy of the filled Pt 5d valence orbitals is 1.5 eV lower than that of metallic Pt, which leads to weaker adsorbate binding consistent with its catalytic properties. Here, a H 2 -stable Pt 2+ site suggests different catalytic applications for these catalysts as compared to Pt NPs.

Ammonothermal Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Vibrational Properties of the Doubly Deprotonated Calcium Guanidinate, CaC(NH) 3

We report the synthesis of the doubly deprotonated calcium guanidinate, CaC(NH) 3 , from liquid ammonia and its crystal structure as determined from powder X‐ray and neutron diffraction, and confirmed using CNH elemental analysis and infrared (IR) spectroscopy data. CaC(NH) 3 crystallizes in the hexagonal system with space group P 6 3 / m (no. 176) with Z = 2 and a = 5.2666(13) Å, c = 6.5881(6) Å and V = 158.25(4) Å 3 . We also compare the structural similarities and differences of this phase with the isotypical strontium and ytterbium compounds.

Electronic structure and optical properties of quantum crystals from first principles calculations in the Born–Oppenheimer approximation

In this work, we develop a formalism to accurately account for the renormalization of the electronic structure due to quantum and thermal nuclear motions within the Born–Oppenheimer approximation. We focus on the fundamental energy gap obtained from electronic addition and removal energies from quantum Monte Carlo calculations in either the canonical or grand-canonical ensembles. The formalism applies as well to effective single electron theories such as those based on density functional theory. We show that the electronic (Bloch) crystal momentum can be restored by marginalizing the total electron–ion wave function with respect to the nuclear equilibrium distribution, and we describe an explicit procedure to establish the band structure of electronic excitations for quantum crystals within the Born–Oppenheimer approximation. Based on the Kubo–Greenwood equation, we discuss the effects of nuclear motion on optical conductivity. Our methodology applies to the low temperature regime where nuclear motion is quantized and, in general, differs from the semi-classical approximation. We apply our method to study the electronic structure of C2/c-24 crystalline hydrogen at 200 K and 250 GPa and discuss the optical absorption profile of hydrogen crystals at 200 K and carbon diamond at 297 K.

Understanding the Beneficial Role of Transition-Metal Layer Na + Substitution on the Structure and Electrochemical Properties of the P2-Layered Cathode Na 2+ x Ni 2– x /2 TeO 6

Layered Na x MO 2 sodium oxide positive electrode materials have experienced renewed interest owing to the current commercial attention on sodium-ion batteries. Although there are many attractive qualities of these materials, they suffer from serious shortcomings owing to Na + ordering and transition-metal layer gliding that cause a plethora of voltage plateaus during cycling. The P2-layered Na 2+x Ni 2–x/2 TeO 6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) system provides a framework for investigating the effect of dual Na + substitution into the sodium layer and the transition-metal layer of the structure and its effects on the electrochemical properties of the materials. A careful investigation into the synthesis and properties of these materials reveals that the sodium content used during material preparation has a drastic effect on the composition and electrochemical profile of these materials. The sodium substitution disrupts ordering within the transition-metal layer, thereby disrupting Na + ordering in the adjacent sodium layers. Beyond a critical sodium concentration, the layer stacking shifts, and all voltage plateaus of the P2-Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 material are no longer observed at 4.4 V versus Na + /Na. These results also question the common belief that additional sodium precursor is required when preparing layered sodium oxide cathodes, providing new guidelines for material synthesis and characterization.
