Strategies for Tailoring Reliability Test Standards

The paper suggests a simple strategy for the tailoring of the ground testing of unmanned spacecraft including considerations of project costs and risks. It is simply stated in five steps: (1) access the specific project's requirements and constraints, (2) use the existing comprehensive quality assurance programs as a guide, (3) prioritize the risks, (4) prioritize the tests, and (5) tailor the test program as appropriate. This approach addresses the specific project needs without unduly compromising the wealth of accumulated flight experience. Tailoring falls into three categories: tailoring of test levels, tailoring of test configurations, and tailoring of test techniques. Three examples are included to illustrate these types of tailoring activities. This paper on stratagies for tailoring spacecraft standards both advocates for and cautions against tailoring depending on the situation. Applied sensibly and carefully, tailoring can improve the test effectiveness and relax constraints on certain project resources. On the other hand, tailoring a product assurance program usually incurres some element of risk and may increase project costs.

Implementation of the ASTER Science Standard Data Product Requirements in the EOSDIS System

The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emmission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is designed to provide a high-resolution map of the Earth in both visible, near-infrared, and thermal spectral regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The ASTER Science Team has developed standard data product algorithms to permit the estimation of surface radiances and reflectance values, to calculate surface temperatures both over water and land, to provide a color enhanced product with a high degree of surface discriminability, in addition to other functions. The ASTER Product Generation System (PGS) Team is implementing these requirements within the constraints of the EOSDIS system, using a rapid development methodology that emphasizes open lines of communication in a team approach using concurrent engineering techniques. This paper describes the critical elements in the development and integration of the ASTER PGS system.

GCAS Visualization Codebase Augmentation Migration to Modern Standards and Feature Enhancements

The Glenn Research Center Communication Analysis Suite (GCAS) includes many analysis tools that can be used to support a wide range of scenarios. It includes a visualization tool that implements the three.js graphics library to display a three-dimensional (3D) representation of its results. This software will enable researchers, engineers, and mission planners to interact intuitively with and understand the results of their analyses, which might not be apparent from raw data. With NASA’s efforts to return humans to the Moon as a part of the Artemis missions, the GCAS has been used extensively for lunar terrain and landing system development analysis, which is vital to ensuring mission achievability and safety. This has created the need to add several significant features to the visualization tool, such as the ability to display the terrain of the lunar surface accurately and to provide information demonstrating how a given region might impact mission objectives. Many of the changes made to the visualization tool can be separated into one of three general advancements: code restructuring to adhere to modern coding standards and practices, new user camera controls for first-person and third-person perspective views, and a terrain generation feature to enable rendering highly accurate terrains based on any celestial body’s digital elevation model (DEM) in GeoTIFF format. These improvements notably elevate the visualization tool's functionality, accuracy, and user interaction while providing a robust foundation for future development.
